PSP Kanji Screen

Sammy Fatnassi has emailed us with a new release today, PSP Kanji. This is the first release of PSP Kanji, a Japanese Kanji learning tool for the PSP. For those of you that don't know what Kanji is, it's a form of Japanese character writing, originally derived from Chinese. So if you fancy learning a bit of Japanese writing, or you just want to brush up on an old skill, feel free to try this out!

This version is quite good as it splits different forms of Kanji into different Japanese grades associated with them. Although this is pretty basic, Sammy Fatnassi plans to add many new features for future releases, including quizzes and other learning tools to make Kanji learning even more fun - as if it isn't already! Also, Sammy plans to release the source code when he is satisfied with it, allowing all you budding Kanji masters to write your own version of this one or modify it.

Features:
  • Prototype version, got some nicely animated windows, displaying Kanjis information.
  • Ground work mostly completed
To do list:
  • Add different quiz mode
  • Add ability let user create their own kanji list for quiz
  • Add support for french
  • Work on GUI
  • Add shadow to fonts
Sammy would also like to thank James Green for his Kanjis compilation Kanjidic, which inspired Sammy in writing PSP kanji.

I've been struggling to remember new Kanji words lately, hopefully this will help!

I also like how you can customize it as well!

By the way, a while back there was a Japanese dictionary app which let you search up japanese words by entering kana and being shown the kanji+ english meanings etc.

But it wasn't very detailed, especially the english...

Any chance of someone doing something similar?

It was emailed in to us. Ask the developer if you wish.

I sent this software to both Ps2Dev and PspUpdates. On the Ps2Dev forum, I added a link to the download page of PspUpdate, to get the program. There was no news theft or something.

Small correction, I was thanking 'Jim Breen' for the public Kanjidic compilation.

I intend to ass full skin support later on, and actually make it usefull to learn Kanjis by adding Quizzes.

Hey, this is a great program for studying some kanji on the go! The ability to add your own quiz/wordlists would be great! ^_^ .

Another feature that would be cool to have is the ability to use the built in japanese input method so the user can try to write the quiz kanji in hiragana and then convert it into the displayed kanji for verification.

Small nitpick; I noticed there is a little spelling error in the screenshot - it should read 'pronunciation' I guess ;)

Thanks Sammy!

Too similar to the french word for me notice the spelling :) :) :)

The ability to create your own list is planned. Plus pre-made list based of lots of learnings manuals.

Very nice program! It's already showing so much promise! I wish I had this before I took the KanKen level 10 though :)

What I would love to see is a side by side rough translation for the english meaning/spoken japanese part. For example, on "One" (Ichi) it says Ichi to the side, but in Katakana for some reason... But still, this is a first release, and it's very simple and effective! :)

PLEASE Keep up the amazing work.

Could you separate the pronounciation between on and kun readings?

It would be wonderfull if you could add some romanji in there as well.Especially in your pronounciation collumn. I'm still learning hiragana and katakana.

I made this for firmware 1.5. It uses kernel access. To work with eLoader I would have to see about removing kernel access.

I am looking forward to seeing the quizzes maybe multiple choice is that how it will work? I had always been using a free website for ESL students manythings.org and with that i learned thousands of words in japanese in several months it has flash matching quizzes lots of really long ones like 79 dozen / test i dunno if u could make something sorta just like that probably need some sorta mouse/cursor but that would rule.

# Thanks for the programGuest 2006-07-25 12:39
This sounds great especially since It's organized (I have a Kanji dictionary but it just seems to have them thrown in randomly) and I don't have to carry it around.

Note: The On and Kun readings are seperated On is in katakana and Kun is in hiragana.

Note2: The ability to play mp3s while whilst studying Kanji would make the program even sweeter

I went to look at the website, thanks, I'll take some idea from there for future releases. That's the kind of thing I had in mind.

Now, if some people happen to make a theme for the windows, please send me the result, I'll be happy to include it in future release, I do not have as much time as I'd like to polish the visuals, you know, with full time work and significant other ;)

-Copy the 2 folders the zipe file include (xxxxPspKanji & xxxxPspKanji%) on your memory stick in : (MemStickDrive) :\PSP\GAME\

-Start your Psp and go into the psp startscreen

-Pick 'Game->Memory Stick'

-Pick 'Psp Kanji' in the list.

If the game doesn't start it's becuase this unfortunatly only work with the psp firmware 1.5
