Le gasp! I'm floored! AhMan has revealed this new version of iR Shell, which has an advanced multi-tasking feature. How multi can multi get? How advanced is it? See this demo!

Woot for JellyCar cameo!

Now AhMan notes that a public release for this new version will take a while. Don't go harassing him, ok? Also, he says that it's currently in its alpha build and can only be used on the Slim.

Dude!

This guy is effing brilliant! Why hasn't somebody offered him a job doing this yet? IRShell is one of the best bits of homebrew around anyway, and if you add this in... well, lets just say he does PSP better than Sony does.

Simply Awesome

.....and yes, someone should hire this guy. I use my irshell everyday My PSP would not be the same without it. This new update looks AMAZING. ps....If you can, could you please take a look at the PHOTO viewer in irshell? I'm not sure if this is a bug, but when viewing photos at their original size, it seems impossible to scroll the photo so as to read the whole thing.

People can post a bazillion comments saying how awesome this feature is, and it wouldn't be enough. That, is unbelievable. Wow. If I can just go on to say that ever since I got the PSP I've wished for a true multi-tasking feature, (I thought I fully understood the PSP's power, but not anymore apparently). I don't mean listening to music while playing a game, although if everyone remembers how huge that was when it first came out. No, no, but this.. This, is amazing. Way to *****ing go Ahman. THIS, is multi-tasking.

Sorry to double post, but I didn't even finish watching the whole damn video before I posted last time. Web browser and homebrew? ... Get, the ****, out of here.

OMG!

now i wish i was a slim owner :(
by Metal Jody - 2009-02-26 16:10:50
Wow AhMan.

just Wow. this just punched Sony straight up the nose. Switching from browser to game. you can look up cheat codes while playing a game. xD sweet. i wish i was a slim owner too :( but i'm saving up cash to build a gaming pc.
by silwon - 2009-02-26 16:54:30
WOW! Kudos AhMan!

I for the first time wish i had a slim, my phat has done everything i've wanted it to, until now. (except no one has made a driver or plug-in for hooking up a XBOX 1 / Playstation controller thru the USB in-game for some reason, I WISH someone would do that! The psp controls hurt my hands and the tiny analog is a joke!) anyway dream big right? good job ahman..
by Serosis - 2009-02-26 17:28:37
meh..

I guess I'll be the first to say something negative: It looks cool and everything, but there is this device out there called a 'computer' it does this, plus more. I ain't gonna lie that the software (being the sony proprietary) on the psp is quite ugly and offers no expansion and irShell does but, come on. Multitasking? Are we that desperate for new features? If it were possible I'd have to ask Ahman to forgo the application itself and develop a custom firmware that completely replaces the XMB with irShell or some other non sony replacement that doesn't scream in pain when you try to multitask.

...

Thank God Ah Man doesn't think as narrow-minded as you, otherwise we wouldn't have his awesome app. Anyone that thinks this is negative or doesn't like people that support this are just haters for whatever reason. This has no negative effect, don't like it, don't use it. Also, I can't fit my laptop in my pocket. Sheesh.

by DarkXCloud - 2009-02-26 20:24:40
That was just an idea.

But multi tasking?!?!? Freakin sweet! I love you!
by Owneddmuch - 2009-02-26 23:03:30
Walkthrough

You could already do that, you just needed to convert the txt walkthrough to images. I WANT A SLIM NOW. :(
by Game4set - 2009-02-26 23:49:39
Closest thing to...

I really think that this is the closest possible thing to a multi-tasking in-game XMB menu that we'll have for the PSP. This makes the PS3's in-games XMB shrivel away in tears.
by Serosis - 2009-02-27 00:04:40
meh part 2

Only ever used the app twice, and that was just to fool around with the IR port. So yeah, ungrateful because it is useless to me. I hold my thanks to Dark Alex for making it possible to run such useless things on the PSP. Wasn't trying to troll, I was just setting my opinion out on the internet.
by azn_drifter204 - 2009-02-27 01:04:59
htank you AhMan

OHH MY GOD.. FINALLY I'VE BEEN W8ING FOR SOME THING LIKE THIS. I NO LONGER HAVE TO USE MY PC TO READ WALK Troughs. I CAN DO IT ALL ON THE PSP... AHHHHH I CAN'T W8. AHMAN UR THE BEST. I CAN'T W8.. YEAY ^_^ I HOPE IT CAN BE USED ON PSP PHAT WHEN RELEASED. AGAIN THANK U FROM EVERY ONE WE WILL BE W8ING PATIENTLY
by Serosis - 2009-02-27 01:42:26
woah

capslock is your enemy, at first I thought Billy Mays was replying. lol
by yoshi314 - 2009-02-27 02:11:56
neat

"(...) come on. Multitasking? Are we that desperate for new features?" i didn't even believe that would be technically possible. games on psp usually make good use of limited resources (esp.ram), so having two or more of them running at the same time is pretty impressive. things like that always amaze me. even if they don't seem too useful from my point of view. btw. did sony ever made use of the infrared port in fat psp? just curious.
by mr.x256 - 2009-02-27 03:46:34
-

Sony are adding this feature in the next PS3 firmware, but I doubt they'll add it to PSP.
by mr.x256 - 2009-02-27 03:51:23
-

Or view it as a text file with the MT viewer in IRshell.

Could you please refrain from spelling with numbers?
by Serosis - 2009-02-27 05:24:44
IR Port

I believe it was used only for the transfer of files between 2 PSPs and it was only limited to transferring pictures. Other than that I believe Sony doesn't use it at all, it ain't on the slims and brites so obviously Sony finds it a useless feature.
by Luigi Panache - 2009-02-27 05:52:59
Phats? I doubt it...

I don't think this release will EVER work on phats. Most games use some part of the 32 mb of RAM the PSP Phat has. The Slim has double the RAM (64 mb) and so it *could* think in terms of two different games or applications. The Phat just wouldn't be able to keep track of two games, sadly.
by TalesXIII - 2009-02-27 08:43:27
multitasking....

so the newest feature for irshell is: - press the note button + L button to switch between 2 applications that runs at the same time, be it from game to any homebrew app. etc.
by FORCE4121 - 2009-02-27 13:34:22
.......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats nice!!!!!!! irshell with this >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>................
by Qowface - 2009-02-27 13:45:59
Nice (if I had a PSP Slim at least)

From what I saw in the video, this looks amazing, lol...being able to switch between the web browser and a game like that, or between a game and a homebrew app, sounds really useful... However, since I have a Fat PSP, this doesn't really help me at all...I just hope AhMan continues to release new versions for the Fat PSP as well even if this specific feature is only for Slim...
by SolidSnake117 - 2009-02-27 16:54:57
i guesss....

i guess its only for slim cause of the better ram??? am i right??? or am i right???
by DJKMan - 2009-03-01 23:41:42
Actually

The IR port was never used for anything on the official firmware. When you were sending pictures, you were actually using the wifi. Why else would the wifi light blink when sending pics? :P It was totally useless to Sony but very useful on the homebrew side.
by DJKMan - 2009-03-01 23:44:26
Wow!

I was just thinking about that a few days ago. :D Impressive! I have a strong feeling that this would be only available to slims. :/ It doesn't seem so impossible on the phat (lots of coding and clever techniques) but it will be difficult. Either way, I'm impressed. :D
by squintin - 2009-03-02 00:08:24
believe me when I say...

best app ever. now I need to get a slim again cause my fat won't cut it!
by b_syron - 2009-03-07 16:02:12
Awesome

Im so glad I just got a slim This looks amazing. Im gonna start using ir shell when this comes out
by PSPZorZ - 2009-03-13 16:05:19
All Hail Ahman

I'm very grateful for your continuing support for this app, definitely the #1 homebrew app in my eyes. I never thought I'd see the day of MP4 support in IRShell... much less while simultaeneously having a game open.
