Here's giving the PSP ad campaign of "Your whole world in your hands" a different definition. PSP homebrew developer mifki has released 3D Virtual Earth v0.5. Since it's an early release, mifki explains that there aren't much features yet. The bare bones function is there though: you can explore the whole surface of the globe in 3D! For a 6MB file, that goes quite a long way!

Here are some notes from miki:

Controls
  • Arrows - move, L/R - zoom
  • cross/triangle - tilt, square/circle - rotate
  • start - menu
Known problems
  • Not sure how it will work on PSP-1000 (fat) because of less memory available, it may crash. I think next versions will be Slim-only, sorry, I'll have to drop support for older PSPs in order to implement great features I'm planning.

it crashed one time, but it's okay. it's an amazing app. similar to google earth. actually i'm thinking it's better than google earth (except it's missing a search bar). takes a little while to load up details, but that's wifi :/

works on phat

didn't crash when I tried it, but after quitting I saw that it had cached up 1.8 gigs of data so I'm ditching it in favor of pspmaps (http://royale.zerezo.com/psp/) -for now at least- which isn't a 3d globe, but it has options to not cache anything (and take up valuable ms space) I'll be keeping an eye on this app though it sure has the potential for greatness
