PSP GBA v1.2: Gameboy Advanced Emulator for PSP

Ó

gbaOver at the QJ Forum, Slasher started the thread "Poll for Requested Homebrew" to determine which homebrew application or games he should work on. The GBA emulator emerged as the most requested app (why am I not surprised?). As a result, Slasher released PSP GBA v1.2, the most recent build of the GBA emulator for the PSP originally created by psp298 and Miemt11. (Thanks to rob for the heads up.)

The new build features all the basics plus some enhancements.
  • Slightly faster emulation
  • Fixed up the menu a bit
  • State saves/loads
  • Vsync, Frame skip, sound on/off, screen size(smoothing)
  • ZIP support
At present, the GBA emulator is not working on PSP running on firmware 2.0. Also, the source code has been included for those who want to tackle the project. Slasher has done a great job on this one and we're hoping he continues on...

by kope - 2006-06-26 17:41
» heck

Just tested it out and noticed that it IS indeed SLIGHTLY faster than the previous emu (by ZX-81). Even the smallest progress IS progress, so that's very good work Slasher.

Man it's hard to wait for the next updates, I'm so damn excited

doesnt work on 2.60!!mine just freeze and shut off.

If this were ever to come out for 2.XX firmware, wouldn't some features be stripped out? Even if another version is made for just 1.50 firmware, the time for the next release will be pushed off for months.

PLEASE do not quit on us! Keep up the good work.

» Great work- collaboration?

Hey, great work on getting this EMU going again.

Just a suggestion, but maybe you should consider collaborating with ZX on this one. I would think that it would be far smoother of a development if there were two people working on it.

But still, please stick with it. We all appreciate your effort.

And indeed, it is a bit faster. Maybe only a frame or two faster per second, but it's great to see things progressing.

» Speed

So how fast does it play on a 1.50? I dont wanna download it if it's not going to make gameplay enjoyable

by pspsycho - 2006-06-26 23:27
» next version

I hope that a user mode version(+2.01) will be released

by Gilgamesh - 2006-06-26 23:28
» Fast!

I have tested both emus with Advanced Wars and this one is faster but a litle more inconsistent, but this gets a good playable speed for this tipe of games.

The sound of both is terrible and better not to enable.

by pappagrande - 2006-06-27 02:39
» yeah

"i have got to say that this guy is updating it very quick and what a very good job he is doing.

I hope this gets updated to work on FW 2.xx

by Eddy - 2006-06-27 03:30
» Pretty Good

Its faster than the last emu I had and this one is coming along...but its still a bit slow...keep up the good work..also I cant change the screen size from 3:2...

by Cristalspeed - 2006-06-27 03:52
» faster

Is this one faster or the VBA???

by Sumo X - 2006-06-27 04:01
» Knock it off guys

Really, stop with the flaming about it not working on 2.X.

I say we let the developers do what they think is necessary to get the emulator to run full speed, then worry about compatibility with firmwares higher than 1.5.

by yoshinatsu - 2006-06-27 04:06
» Good

SUDDENLY everyone remembered that PSP can emulate GBA...

It was about time to make a "What do you want?" poll.

by Fr0sTy - 2006-06-27 04:57
» menu

the menu is more messed up now than in the original release. zip support is good though... and it is running a little smoother... pspvba was a huge improvement, now pspgba is back, and slightly smoother? the race is on.....

by Da 8ackwad2 Man - 2006-06-27 05:05

Maybe Slasher and ZX will become the next Psmonkey and Strmnrmn...

by FearLES - 2006-06-27 05:44
» Keep up the good work on the GBA emulators!

everyone with 2.01+ it is your own fault for being so impatient to get Sony`s security updates. Stop whinning 1.5 all the way!

by bah - 2006-06-27 05:50
» bah

I wanted sound support, the speed it runs at now is adequate. You know, just wanted to experience the game with it's sound.

by smd - 2006-06-27 06:23
» nds?

will we see a NDS emulator?

by asda - 2006-06-27 06:31

WTF is the NDS EMULATOR? there is no such thing!

by bryan - 2006-06-27 06:49
» what happened to this site..

its nothing but a bunch of nerds itching to try to tell each other off and try to look smarter than the others.

Seriously. the topic is GBA not what you think of someones opinion of GBA. Lets stay on the topic.

» Pokemon

Has anyone tried any of the Pokemon games?

by Sumo X - 2006-06-27 07:21
» Just a few tests

Well, in case anybody cares, the real fps for this emulator (using Mario Kart as a test) is about 7.5fps. That's if there's no frameskip, no sound.

With the default frameskip of 2 (probably the maximum you'd want for an emulator), the game played like it was running at 14.5fps.

This was all based off using a stopwatch and comparing it to the time in a given track.

by an super guy - 2006-06-27 07:41
» cool

i hope that they make a better for my psp so i can play at full speed

by Bob00100 - 2006-06-27 09:12
» 2.6

You people with 2.6 stop complaining. I bet some of you had a 1.5 and upgraded. As long as it works for the rest of us i don't care.

by THEBIGYELLOWSUN - 2006-06-27 10:36
» NICE

Its cool to see this actually being worked on, can't wait for the next release. Keep up the good work, and ignore the whiners.

@ 58

Yea I have, pokemon ruby, sapphire and emerald. Emerald doesn't load at all (well it does but it stucks to the white screen, it does the same thing with all the GBA emus for PSP [side-note: this specific rom DOES however work when played on PC]). Ruby and Sapphire do load but they run slow as hell. There's not really any difference at all between all the GBa emus when it comes to these two games. Lookin forward to catch pkmons with ALMOSt full speed, if not FULL :)

by doctajoyce - 2006-06-27 12:47
» mother 3!!!!

i am giddy in ancitpation of this because ill be able to play mother 3, after BUYING a n64 waiting for this bloody sequel and being dissapointed again and again I cannot wait for this to come out and with the mother 3 patch (www.mother3.org) HOORAY

by Wii60_Lover - 2006-06-27 14:36
» works ok but VBPSP slightly faster

nice menu/option screens. Otherwise, really can't wait for the next version with hopefully speed increase and better sound support.

Thanks - keep up the great work!!!!!!

» Kernel mode on 2.5/2.6

I wonder if access to kernel mode on 2.5/2.6 will increase the speed of the emu, seeing as how the firmwares have been cracked.

» 2.6

i hope this becomes a daily update, i mean i am really rooting for the next virons of this gba emulator. its really facinating. and why fight it. i mean if you have 2.6 you rock man.i mean why talk garbage on the internet. you know what it reminds me of a little moral, '' fighting on the internet is just like running in the specal olympics, no matter who wins your still retarted. so kiss and make up every one and stop fighing 2.6 and 1.5 who cares just take the hack and enjoy. plz no commets about my messages i would thank you if you wouldnt leave bad feed back for every 2.6 messager out there its just getting out of hand. plz lets just get along. and ty for the new update. even tho it doesnt work on 2.6 i would like to hope like a month from now all bugs will be fixed and i can play my favorate roms. good luck :)
