DickyDick1969
has done it again and has given us a new version of PiMPStreamer! DickyDick1969 seems to be very happy about this release, and it is no secret why! This version is a major improvement from the previous versions because it now streams your "PiMP" videos from your PC to your PSP at original frame rate, making it full speed! This has been the most demanded request for this streaming program, and it is now reality! If you have any questions on how to run PiMPStreamer, check out DickyDick's website. DickyDick1969 would also like to thank those that gave him donations, and he greatly appreciated them. For those wondering, he still needs more money for his 2.x PSP (that's a hint!).

Just a thought. Good work again. Oh one more question when you push square to fill the buffers whats the maximum buffer available? Assuming a 54g connection with optimal bandwidth would pausing a video for 10 seconds completely fill the video buffer?

This SHOULD work on versions 2.xx. The bottom line is that TVPSP (video streamer that works with capture card) works on ALL versions except 2.7. the bottom line is that this app is based off of PMPmod which runs Kernal Mode

so until kernal mode can be accesed in 2.xx, your s.hit out of luck of running this on anything higher than 1.5

in the very first release it was said that it can "possibly" be able to stream from anywhere in the world via port forwarding....but the app has to become better for it to work....although i havn't tried it lately but it didn't work on earlier verisons

to DigitalFx.....YES its laggy cuz of you WEP....why dont you wanna take it out? you live in a apartment building or something? oh well thats your choice

by NxJ NightHawk - 2006-05-15 13:46
» You can use this to stream online

#43, just disable WEP and tell your router to disable broadcasting the SSID. Then set your router up to only allow access from the MAC addresses of your devices (PC, PSP-etc). That way any would-be hacker will see your network, but no SSID for it so they can't connect up and even if they did, their MAC address wouldn't be valid so they'd get bounced off the network.

#44 You can use this app to stream videos online. In the .ini file on your PSP>GAME>PiMPSTREAMER folder, put your WAN IP instead of a LAN IP.

Then go to your router, set up the virtual server/firewall to route traffic on port 3333 to the IP of the computer you're running PiMPstreamer on.

What should happen is your PSP will attempt to connect to the WAN IP listed and your firewall'll route traffic from it to the IP of the PC running pimpstreamer.

Note: to control the bitrate on the go, download Pocket VNC viewer for PSP. You can remote desktop to your comp and change the bitrate on PiMPstreamer's main window.

BTW, the dl.qj.net version of this is corrupted, every time i download it it never opens. Eboot.pbp's corrupted. The one on D1ckyd1ck's homepage works tho.

by '(^_^)' - 2006-05-15 14:07
» Security

#49 It takes seconds to spoof a MAC address and gain access to a restricted network. SSID can be found in seconds also. WEP takes a couple of minutes to break. Only way I have found to secure access to a wireless network is with a Radius server but its a pain and only stop's unauthorised clients connecting, the traffic can still be sniffed. WEP is also a massive overhead on the network reducing throughput by upto 50%.

Bottom line - no such thing as secure wireless so just forget about trying to secure it.

Good suggestion about Pocket VNC though, gotta love that program.

» It works well

Using 500kbps for video and 64kbps for audio, I was able to get a good stream without audio hissing/cracking. Though, the movie crashed about 20 mins in.

by Mike - 2006-05-15 14:16
» you don't need kernel for everything

#42, at one time even PSPRadio required kernel access, now it does not. The whole point of my last post (#41) is that TVPSP, the video streamer which uses your TV capture card to stream video DOES NOT REQUIRE KERNEL ACCESS to work. It works on all versions, including 2.01, 2.5 and 2.6 which cannot access kernel memory. What i am trying to get at is that it is possible to stream video to a PSP with NO KERNEL ACCESS.

by InflamedSpirit - 2006-05-15 14:41
» NICE! Awesome!

Haha! No flickering or spluttering! Great improvement! Thanks for making this!

As it wasn't working for me origionally, I took NxJ NightHawk's advice to disable wep and use MAC address filtering.

The only issue I have is the error handeling. Usually when something goes wrong, the whole thing freezes and a manual 10 second restart is required.

The challenging part now will be finding decent wifi on the go.

» PIMP Testing

I am getting it to work smoothly at default 500 video and 128 audio without comprimizing my wireless security, but I do get the purple screen of death if I try to change directories (so browse to video source to start). Videos that are already closer to the PMP MOd spec in terms of bitrate and resolution have less issues with skipping and popping than higher res videos and bit rates.

» Dealing with PiMPstreamer freezing

#50 Haha, yeah i know WEP's awful for security. But there are people out there who still don't know how to crack it. My freeloading wifi stealing neighbors for one

The method i suggested should keep 40-50% of freeloaders out but you're right. A dedicated hacker or even script kiddie will be able to crack WEP.

#53 & #55 I run PiMPstreamer thru iRshell 1.5 (http://ahman.co.nr)

That way if the app crashes on me, i just L+select back to iRshell and L+R to reboot the app. Saves a bit of loading time and you don't need to pull the battery or anything.

#57 To be honest, i haven't tested it from an open AP yet. My college has a wifi network so i'll go down and test it today. Using this method at home connects to the PiMPstreamer server though so i see no reason why it wouldn't work outdoors.

#60 Make sure you've got port 3333 mapped to the IP of the PC you're running PiMPstreamer on (See my post at #49)

Also, if you've got a hardware router, disable the Windows Firewall for your internet connection. You don't really need it anyway. If you wanna leave it on though allow connections on port 3333 from your computer to the net and vice versa. That should solve your problem.

by NxJ NightHawk - 2006-05-15 18:46
» #60, having the same prob as you

#60, i'm having the same problem as you y'kno. Has anyone else experienced it? I'm guessing it's cos the server's not sending the new folder contents to the PSP but i'm not a coder so i can't be sure.

» Maybe it's the ports

Ref: #57, #63 & #67

Taemo, maybe the reason it doesn't work is because you need port 3333 open on the firewall of the connection at your workplace? I seem to recall needing to open port 3389 for me to Remote Desktop home from my workplace a while back.

Has anyone tried running PiMPstreamer on a port that's usually open (8080, 21, 80) and seeing if they can connect to the PiMPstreamer server running on their home PC from a public wireless hotspot or unsecured wifi network?

» pimpstreamer over internet

You have to forward port 3333 from your external IP to the internal IP adress., then you can stream your videos over the internet. This is alot slower then over the LAN.

Needs to be done on your router.

To check your external ip

Check out my pimpstream on http://lionel007.mine.nu:3333

» Bugs found so far

1: Error - Unable to browse to any folder. If files aren't in the root directory, i can't browse to them to play. Details - Blank purple screen appears, PSP then freezes and needs a manual reset

2: Error - PiMPstreamer server doesn't reset if PSP crashes while playing movie.

Details - Unless PiMPstreamer app is restarted on PC, PSP will freeze every time the user tries to connect to the server. PSP needs to be manually reset.

3: Error - PSP battery drains even if USB charger is plugged in.

Details - PSP charges when running iRshell but the second PiMPstreamer is running, the PSP stops charging. Tested running PiMPstreamer directly from memstick as well. Same result.

@ #69, how big is your memory stick? After i just finished watching my ep of Scrubs, the area around my memstick was pretty hot. Maybe the app can't cache enough of the file to play it? Just a guess. I'm using a 1GB chip here but i did have the same prob you're having when i was using PiMPstreamer v0.4.

Feature request - If the author's reading this, could you possibly add these features to the next version of PiMPstreamer? Before i get flamed about how i'm a n00b for requesting stuff and i should do it myself. I'm not a coder but i reckon these features'd make the app even better than it already is!

> add an option to kill the app by pressing the "Home" Button.

> option to select when to connect (be it instantly or once the user chooses to). If there isn't a valid connection, the app freezes up.

> option to customise the .ini file from inside the app using the virtual keyboard or something and add shortcuts that can be selected in-app to allow connection to different streamers (comp at work, comp at home-etc).

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Awesome app and i'll be sure to donate once 0.6 comes out if the errors for browsing get solved.

» @ 73.

Same as u mate, 1GB stick, I originally had 134MB free on it, thought that should be plenty as its not really caching much to a buffer on the stick, deleted a TV epispode from the stick which left me 500MB free, still same problems. I get the same on the wireless network @ work (Belkin 54G router originally, now we have a BT1800 Router and I ahve full access to all of its settings), was getting the same on my Sitecom access point @ home and now a newly installed BT1800HG 54G router @ home, still the same problems, doesnt matter if I sit the PSP on top of the router, or am downstairs, exactly the same problems. its not a port issue as it works, not a firewall issue as the windows one is off, and just to make sure it wasnt the router I forwarded 3333 to my FX55cpu PC. I'm just wondering if its one of those 'Reset PSP to default settings' issues.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CONTACT THE AUTHOR FOR Bug Reporting? Tried emailing him twice, still no answer.

by Dave - 2006-05-16 02:28
» @ 73.

nope, not a memory thing, got 500MB free, have tried this on many wifi connections, originally on the belkin 54g at work, now a BT1800 at work and also my BT1800HG router and the sitecom access point I was using previously. I'm wondering if I need to reset the PSP to default settings and then go from there. Seems to be the only thing left to try. I know its not the PC per say as its more than capable of coping with the recoding/streaming.

pimpstreamer v0.40 PMP.ini:

[stream]

con = 0;

» Tried overclocking the CPU?

#75, worth a shot but have you tried overclocking your PSP CPU to 333MHz? You shouldn't have to do that to run it but if it does work thenat least you can watch streaming content, even if your battery life decreases by an hour or so.

Run iRshell, overclock the CPU then run PMP mod inside of iRshell and see what happens.

i hope this app is open source, if not, may be in the near future. it would be great if this will have a linux version so those NAS devices (mostly linux-based) can stand on its own serving videos for the psp.

» to people haveing problems

i noticed no one is mentioning that you should make a folder called "video" in your psp directory and then make a text file in that folder and change the extention to .pmp for example dummy.pmp. do this and change the con value to 1 instead of 0 and it should work. so to reiterate "ms0:\PSP\VIDEO\ dummy.pmp" and change the con value in the ini file and disable wep and you have smooth playback although it has crashed on me, great homebrew.

advice: launch it with irshell->cpu333

Hmmmn, I had made the psp/video folder, due to seeing it in an error message after the 3rd-4th time of trying to run pimpstreamer, but I havent seen any other reference to that folder or making the file u mentioned in the readme files, I will certainly give it a go in a bit :)

» Don't forget: Map other Drives and see movies,mp3 etc from one folder

Have you MP3, AVI folders on different drives?

Want to have all your media in one folder accessable to the pimpstreamer even when scattered across your PC?

Just wanted to remember that those with XP (2K) can use the computer management (mmc.exe) with the Disk Management to map you HDD and DVD drives into your pimpshared folder.

Example: map your DVD drive into your "pimped" folder

1 - create an empty folder in your shared folder you use for the pimpserver, we need this emtpy folder later

2 - map your DVD drive

Open mmc.exe

Select the Disk Management (expand "Storage" if you can't find it)

Just select your drive, rightclick, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths", now use Add (DO NOT select remove or change) and browse to the empty folder we've created above, now klick OK to finish addign the drive. Check the folder in windows explorer, drive icon should appear.

3 - pop in your media DVD and open it from pimpstreamer on the psp

This works also with other drives , only network shares won't work this way.

have fun!

» nice find!

Haha, nice idea #93. Only prob is with this release i can't browse into folders. If i try to leave the root folder that's assigned on my server, the PiMPstreamer client on my PSP gives me the "Purple screen of death".

I'll have to remember this for the 0.6 release though. Nice job!

» still error issue

what do we do on the Windows side?

just double-clicking PimpStreamer.exe will do right??

and after that, we just start the PimpStreamer on the PSP and it should connect automatically???

i think that i did miss something to do on the windows side

i've change the IP and folder and create VIDEO folder and still nothing

someone have screenshots of how this homebrew programs work properly can share them???

» Stream and Net?

I am trying to install this. The usage file says to change both the Stream and Net IP addresses in the INI file. I only see the

[stream] setting! Where is the Net setting?? Am I missing something?

by Dave - 2006-05-16 09:56
» nope dummy.pmp didnt help and con=

I tried it with a dummy.pmp file, and it shows up in my list of files once the app starts on the PSP, so it seems like it does something, but doesnt appear to help with the streaming.

Also the Net setting is con= in the pmp.ini file for the PSP, and u set it to whatever connection number that u want to use, so if u use con1 for home, con2 for ur mates house 3 for work etc. so you set con=3 if ur at work etc. you get the picture.......

by ed - 2006-05-16 10:01
» hey

this thing is getting more and more interesting

for the first time I can watch movies flawlessly, unbelievable...... even with WEP !!!!!

Unfortunately ...

- Why do I have to read these comments here to get the infos I need to get this working ?? (con=1, dummy.pmp) Please add this to the readme...

- We need MPG2, PMP and WMV support !!!!

- The aspect ratio value does not work anyhow, it´s useless and all videos look stretched wrong.... Please add some aspect ratio change option in the player itself..

But if he goes on like that, this player will beat location free very very soon... just little step....

» congrats

Have been followin this app since it's first release and our man has done really well. The RSS/XML VODcast feeds work really well and have opened up a whole new world to this app - who needs an Ipod??

Drag a few MP3's into your movies folder and you can stream them too, great work, donation on the way.

» Here's a pic to help you set the app up

OKAY, HERE'S A PIC WITH ALL THE INFO YOU NEED TO SET THE APP UP. If you don't have even a rudimentary idea of how to get this working after looking at the pic, i'm sure there's a n00b section on the forums you should be reading.

» explanation of con= (net setting)

if u have multiple wifi connections set on ur PSP, for example, u use connection1 for home, 2 for your mates house, 3 for work, depending on ur location for instance at work you would set con=3. apart stuttering though, everything else works fine.

dummy.pmp didnt help me with stuttering, but it did show up in my file list when I Started the app. on teh PSP.

I have no video folder and I use WEP and pimp streamer works perfect! try using your internal IP. Say if your router is 192.168.1.1 then use 192.168.1.101 depending on how many pc's you have on you network. Also someone said that if you open port 3333 and use you external IP you can access your pc anywhere with wi-fi, but i tried it and it didn't work. Anyone have some more facts on this method.

by LK DaMyth - 2006-05-16 10:41
» #101, Thank God

If it wasn't for the comment of 101, or should I say Dave, I would have never guessed it. I've been playing with the settings for hours, and as soon as I changed my con = to 2 it worked. I have three different connection for my PSP, but only one works for my home router. I have to say, this bad boy is uncanny. I have a dedicated NAS that I use to keep all my movies and shows on and I set it up for XP to use as a networked HDD, so I can watch all my movies. This is a fantastic Program. Who would of thought I would be watching Pulp Fiction from my NAS on my PSP.

by taemo - 2006-05-16 11:27
» #102

its possible sinX, you just have to make sure that on the Wi-fi you are at, port 3333 is open aswell

by red - 2006-05-16 11:29
» nice

I just got back from a trip outside, using a neighbor's internet to watch some Samurai Jack on PSP.

And for those having problems, make damn sure the Windows firewall is off, and that your router maps port 3333 on TCP only. Not UDP, and not both as I couldn't get it working like that.

by Dave - 2006-05-16 12:15
» Some more info for everyone

For those that didnt know up/down on the dpad will adjust ur volume accordingly, only do 1 press at a time and wait for the volume to change then press again (this info was lifted from teh mph forums, I'm sure Timboman won't mind)

jsut wish I could stop teh stuttering vid/aud :(

» I wonder...

I wonder if it would be possible to create an app that converts to MP4 or AVC on the fly much like this app converts to pmp on the fly. Then it may be possible for people with 2.xx firmware to stream video.

So to clarify this matter. If it's not working smoothly, it's not the program, it's something wrong with your settings. Check them out.

» Finally it works for me.

Tried every version since v2 and had problems with horrendous lag. Even with a 32kb/sec video and audio and /2 frame rate. Now THIS comes along and works perfectly.

I'm running at 900 video and 128 audio with only slight hitches every few minutes if i'm at the other end of the house. Fantastic work.

Now if only i could map 2 drives i'd be sorted.

If you tried some of the earlier versions and had performance problems this is the version you've been waiting for. No more audio stutter, good framerate, great progress!

This was mentioned on comment #31, I cant seem to connect. My psp freezes when it says 2 of 4 when I first start the app. I've set up the ini file and put in my comp ip and everything. The other versions work fine for me but this new one doesnt seem to work...

» MAC

@66

Not hard to get get a MAC address, they are sent with every packet/frame, sniff it in seconds if the NIC is active.

Simple stuff.

Look into packet sniffing to get you started then move onto something more interesting such as ARP poisoning and raw packet injection. You will be surprised what is transmitted in plain text over your wifi connection.
