Boot Protector

Need to keep your parents away from your PSP? Want your pesky sibling to stop hogging your Sony handheld? Hoping that your roommate won't find out about those photos that you took while he was asleep which you stored in your PSP? Then lock it down with a password, and unless your parents or your sibling happens to be a LUA coder, your  secrets should be safe enough.

There's now a small and useful LUA application made by azy_xbox123 called the Boot Protector. With this, anyone who wishes to use your PSP will be asked to provide a five-digit password upon start-up. This should possibly deter any nosy person who may want to start snooping on what you've been up to with your PSP.

In the meantime, azy_xbox123 includes the following notes about his creation:

D-PAD = Navigate/Change Password Number
SELECT = Screenshot

To install:

1.50 w/ Harleyg's Custom Firmware: ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/DEVBOOT.PBP
ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/Applications/
ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/System/
5x ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/*****.prx

This is activated by leaving you WLAN switch down, this hasn't been tested!

2.71SE: ms0:/PSP/GAME/BOOT/EBOOT.PBP
ms0:/PSP/GAME/BOOT/Applications/
ms0:/PSP/GAME/BOOT/System/
5x ms0:/PSP/GAME/*****.prx

This is activated via the configuration menu, although I have gotten this to work on 2.71SE, it crashes when exiting to XMB once the correct password is input!

Although this gets the job done, it doesn't disable the use of the HOME button. I am waiting on a custom build to be built.

So, as we said, unless your parents, little brother, or roommate are all developers themselves, this app should do a pretty good job of keeping them out of your hair. Otherwise, we advice you to start hiding the USB cables in your house, but be warned that this doesn't prevent other members of the household from hiding the PSP unit itself.

I tried this to keep my pesky brother from accessessing my psp. I set my passord wrong (i think) and I cant do anything with my 2.7SE now. Is there anyway to undo this? Or else I bricked it.

If you have a memory card reader which supports the Pro Duo (thats what I use) you can just pop that in it and erase the files of the boot protector, if you don't you could do a little problem solving and guess + test all combos and write them down while you pass each one (that'll be easier if you have some idea of what the pass is).

# oh, too bad they can just remove the memory stick before turning it on..RaiderX 2006-11-12 16:35
and then it wont boot the password app, and then they can do whatever they want on the PSP. cool idea, but flawed. unless the person is a total noob, which they probably would be. I guess its worth a shot =/

removing it or just placing the mem stick in a reader on the PC and see what kind of junk was on it

the only way to get true protection on ur psp is to integrate something like this into the elf of the custom firmware that is stored on the flash so there is absolutely no way to bypass it... i think this would be kinda dangerous tho without the right precautions because if u forget ur password ur screwed

just take out your MS and boot ur psp, then u can go into USB mode and delete the file so ur not locked out anymore :)

the maker of this app had this to say for cases like yours (as taken from the forums):

"If you forget your password, connect your PSP to your computer while Boot Protector is running to access your memory stick."

Hope that helps. :)

after that make it a prx and flash it to SE firmwarez.

some of you are making complaints like this is suppose to be perfect. it's not. maybe next, it will be a prx installed onto the psp. it's a great idea that probably is easy to build off of

# how to install?Guest 2006-11-12 20:06
guys i've tried installing by following the instructions above on my 1.5 but nothing happened when i start my psp...can some1 really tell me how to install this?

# i agreeGuest 2006-11-12 20:39
it could have a fail safe where the only way to remove it would be to re-flash the psp through the recovery mode or through some special program that would come with the password installer package this would make it so only people who know about the password protection software could remove it and not just any idiot who can remove a memory stick.

They most probably will be. If I gave it to any of my friends and asked them to get to the XMB, they wouldn't be able to get in. Even the ones with PSPs wouldn't think about taking the memory stick out because for all they know, it's on the PSP itself.

I'd also have to explain what the XMB is.

You need a custom firmware. Official 1.5 won't run it at startup. Best just to hide the PSP or take it with you!

# Not very good...Guest 2006-11-13 05:03
If you can easily disable or bypass the security. Might be good for the noobs trying to touch your PSP, but anyone who knows anything will get right past this. In regular 1.50 w/Harley, just keep the WLAN switch up and it's disabled (bypasses the program). And in 2.71SE, the thing doesn't even work properly...

Back to the old drawing board... huh?

2.00 - 2.82 has Secuity to disable Homebrew, while 1.00-2.00 (and 2.71SE") are homebrew enabled.

okay does it work on se-b ??? anyone. Oh and one problem to solve anyone from taking out the memory stick would be to glue the thing shut!!!. i know not a smart idea but just reminded me a while back when i was trying to mod my psp and superglued my memory stick slot shut. OOOOh man what a day that was, but i got it open and luckily the memory stick wasnt to glued into place and i got it out without braking it. I know im an idiot. still if someone can tell me if it works on se-b i already know u need to enable autoboot and all that just want to know if it freeze's at the xmb cause if it does i dont want it. oh and is it just numbers cause if it used letters i would know a 5 letter word that works. not telling u can guess. thanks for any help and thanks for the lua program.
