New PSP Controller Program Unveiled |
Listed in: Homebrew Applications, Wi-Fi Tags: Custom Firmware, David Rudie, joysticks, Mikko Monone, PPJoy, psp homebrews, WiFi Controller
Ó

Inspired by the work of Mikko Monone, who wrote the original controller program, David Rudie decided to give this program his own mark. The WiFi Controller program basically turns your PSP into a controller for your PC. A few of the things he noticed that's a little amiss with the original was that the start button exited the program and select didn't work plus he wanted some more details on the display.
He borrowed a tiny bit of the original codes as a starting point and the rest was all his. Also, we have to give it up for PPJoy for helping out. Rudie writes a detailed how-to in the Read Me file included in the downloaded, which I'm going to put here for everyone's convenience.
- Open the PSP directory and edit the proper wifi.cfg for your PSP version and set the IP of the computer you are going to use this on.
- Copy the correct director(y|ies) to your PSP depending on whether you have a 1.0 or 1.5 PSP. If you use a custom firmware mod that allows the use of single EBOOT.PBP files on a 1.5 PSP then you can use the 1.0 directory.
- Download and install PPJoy. http://www.geocities.com/deonvdw/Docs/PPJoyMain.htm
- After it is installed open up your Control Panel and run Parallel Port Joysticks.
- When the window comes up click Add... at the bottom and then Add on the next screen.
- It will want to install some drivers so either have it scan automatically or point it to the directory you install PPJoy to.
- After it is done installing, click the PPJoy Virtual joystick 1 in the menu and click Mapping...
- Choose "Set a custom mapping for this controller" and click Next.
- Axes = 2 (X Axis and Y Axis)
Buttons = 8
POV hats = 1
- X Axis = Analog 0
Y Axis = Analog 1
- These buttons are up to you to set. I left them all default but changed Button 7 and Button 8 to be correct because they ARE WRONG default.
Button 1 = Digital 0
Button 2 = Digital 1
Button 3 = Digital 2
Button 4 = Digital 3
Button 5 = Digital 4
Button 6 = Digital 5
Button 7 = Digital 11
Button 8 = Digital 10
- Directional button POV
North = Digital 6
East = Digital 7
West = Digital 9
South = Digital 8
- Run the SocketText.exe program. It will open a Command Prompt window. Just minimize it and forget about it. If it just opens and closes, something went wrong. Good luck.
- Now start the program no your PSP and it should connect to your computer and basically be working. You'll find out in the next step.
- Go back to your control panel and go to Game Controllers. Click on the PPJoy Virtual joystick 1 and choose Properties. On the screen that comes up you should be able to press buttons on the PSP and have them show as working on the screen. I recommend calibrating the Analog Stick too.
- Enjoy!

Here, let me help you a bit. 'Code' is already plural. 'Line of code' is the singular. There is no 'codes' in a single project.
If you don't want to look like a dork to anyone that actually knows what they are talking about, either learn the real lingo or don't use it at all.

He's been advertising this feature for a long time in the to do list and now that it's out I get the feeling that it's more of a POS than any kind of upgrade. I'll just stick with .45 untill the 2.80 emulation comes out just like everyone else on here that has the sense to do so. (and that's most from what I read)
as far as I'm concerned He's been wasting his time even working on this, and SHOULD have been doing something about the memory issues the web browser has. (not enough memory)
otherwise I percieve this as a totally useless release, and if its giving corrupted settings loops then ONLY the POC mods can help you.
and that's just no good

@19) That's your choice.
@20) I'm not really interesting in making a USB version since that would require a lot more work and I already have a USB joystick. I wanted WiFi. :) Sorry.
@21) I have many linux boxes as well as osx and freebsd. I personally dislike Ubuntu. I prefer Gentoo or LFS. Anyway, I might work on a linux version some time. The server source code is there so it can be ported to Linux.

I would really have would like to see a USB version as well, but it would be hard after seeing the problems they had with keyboard emulation and everything (no driver support). Maybe if someone wrote an interface that would read from changes in a txt file for button presses. Dunno.

Linux is for hack kiddies that think they can hack and/or dont wanna pay for a REAL OS. Just give it up and acknowledge that windows is the only OS to support 99.99% of the programs on the market.

@33) Maybe you mapped it wrong? Triangle works here.
@37) Try reading some of the earlier comments. I missed something when writing the steps. It might help you.
@38) You should leave the port setting untouched unless you changed the server port (which I don't think you did). As for the IP address. It should be the IP address of the computer that you want to use the controller on (and the one that will be running the SocketTest).
@39) Not sure why it wouldn't get past 2. It's basically the same connect code everyone uses. I've started it before without the server running and it goes through all the states just fine.
@41) Trolling sucks and so do you. :)

follow as normal till you get to the buttons, skip the first button map, set it to nothing, then set the others like he has it but one more slot down.

I did everything the Readme says and "something went wrong."

@59) Wrong area?
@60) Ignore the src directory unless you're going to change the code and make it how you want. You should only need to modify the wifi.cfg in the directory for your PSP version. All you need to do is put in the IP of the computer you want to use this on. You don't need to change the port.
@61) What firmware version are you trying this from? I only tested it on a modified 1.5 firmware.
@62) I wish I could but I can't. I guess maybe try what other people here have said about getting things to work.
I'll be cleaning up the readme some and directions some with the next release so people might be able to get it working better. It's not the easiest to explain all these steps in terms that everyone can understand. :)

If you had read ANYTHING, you would see that I did not write the server. I simply wrote the client on the PSP. You would also notice that I never referred to the Lua Gamepad put out. But hey, not everyone can be smart, right? Maybe you shouldn't answer that.
Now granted, not everyone has the same setup. Not everyone is running the same version of windows. Not everyone has the same PSP version or mods and so on. I can't predict all the possibilities out there. I have two 1.50 PSP's that I test with. It works for me. If it's not working for you, I did include the source code so you could try to fix it yourself. Other people here are saying they got it to work and that it worked great for them. Others can't figure it out. Those that can get it to work... that's cool. Congratulations to you. Those that can't, I'm sorry. :)

Btw, is there any reason why the PSP spams packets even if no keys are being pressed? In my LUA version (which is just as responsive as this application) it only sends keyup and keydown notifications if they are pressed. I think this may preserve the battery a bit more.
Anyway, nice application

@77) I don't know. I don't have a 2.60 PSP to test it with. It doesn't write to flash or anything so why don't you just give it a try instead of asking?
@80) It's basically sending a packet on every vblank, which is 60Hz. You can figure it out. I had originally coded mine in the same method as yours in that it only sends a packet when a key is pressed or released. The problem with that is that you couldn't do something similar with the analog stick really. I was going to try to re-implement that code again but instead compare the previous analog position to the new analog position and only send a packet if that changes. I will still sync it to vblank though so that it doesn't just spam away when the analog stick is in the position where it is constantly changing numbers. I don't know how much extra sending the packets that often would hurt the battery time. I played a game for at least 2 hours using the PSP the entire time and the battery still showed 3 bars. Feel free to contact me any time.
@87) Weird. How many connections do you have set up? I only have one item in my network config so that's the only one I test with. I'll look into this problem some more.
Thanks for all the feedback.

If you want to do it the easy way then run Search-> SocketTest OR go to the file you originally downloaded which has the psp's eboot. There should be a folder called PC and src. Go to the PC one.
anyways, does anyone know how to fix the socket error? Mine just opens and closes. I did everything right but i don't know why it doesnt work.
If i try doing it manually with the cmd, it would say
CreateFile failed with error code 2 trying to open \\.\PPJoyIOCTL1 Device
Maybe i entered the wrong values? i doubt it though. The psp can connect, even though nothing happens.

Determined to find out more about this problem I tried out other wifi related programs and some of them worked ok, and others didn't.. usually the ones that don't give you the choice of selecting the wifi connection failed to connect at all. The interesting thing is that when I tried pspradio, at the select connection screen I noticed that the first two options were garbled text ( which coincides with the connections I had deleted before)..
I tried deleting another wifi connection in the infrastructure option ( the first one again) and went back to psp radio options. I noticed that there were now three entries with garbled text ( the three ones I deleted) . So , my theory is that somehow when I was deleting the connection in the infrastructure options it wasnt really and completely deleting it. I dont know why it was happening since it hasnt happened in the past..maybe another homebrew ( probably Devhook) messed up with the registry .
I ended up reseting my psp to default state and recreating the connection. That seemed to fixed the problem with this program. but the question still remains there.. what really happened with the psp that it did not fully deleted the connections?..Moreover, it would be good if you can implement a option at start to select your wifi connection.

It may be that you had LPT1 controller insted of Virtual Controller. When clicking on Parrallel Port Joysticks in the Control Panel, select Virtual Keyboard when adding a controller insted of that other one.
Hopefully everyone who had this problem has it no more.

My only problem is that the connection works for about 2 - 5 minutes, and then the PSP stops responding. SocketTest is working, and the PSP still tries to send the signals to the pc, but nothing happens. Tried with both a static and non-static connections, both had the same results.
Anyone with the same issue / knows how to fix this.
Thanks in advance, and again, amazing 'brew.

"And making a completely useless program that doesn't work for most of the people in here." I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that I cared that it worked for everyone out there. I'm especially not caring in your case.
And in reply to this... "Also, you're not too smart for thinking that I said it was YOU who referred to the Lua Gamepad. Read this article. Read peoples' comments."
Let me follow it up with the original thing you said... "I don't understand why you guys are saying the Start button closes and the Select button doesn't work in the other PSPGamepad. They both work completely fine for me."
Read THIS article and comments. There is no one mentioning start button or select button problems here. You are the one that was thinking of the wrong program and maybe you should read these comments because obviously the things you talk about don't exist here. Moron.

@117) Haven't heard that one yet. For the PSP it to work 2-5 minutes and stop responding is kind of weird. Maybe your access point is dropping you? I'll work on implementing a way to let you know if a connection was dropped so it could reconnect if that happens. I don't know what would be causing it to drop in the first place though.
@118) I have no delayed action with the stick.
@119) Ok, let me get this straight. You say X doesn't work in game... but... at the same time you say you didn't assign it to anything in GTA:SA? I guess, uh, maybe try assigning it to something and see what happens? :)
@120) Adios.
@126&127) Neat. I didn't think it would work on 2.6 but since it does that's pretty awesome.
@128) Great idea! You write it!
@129) You play BF2 with it?! I'm a keyboard/mouse person when it comes to first-person shooters. But that's pretty cool. I might give that a shot when I'm flying or something.
@131) Great, keep using it then. In my opinion, VNC is meant for a different use. While this is designed for this very one thing. :) But hey, I'm not forcing anyone to use any of this. If you like using VNC for it, that's cool. Enjoy.
@132) I _could_ map the volume buttons so they can be used for something, but you can only map those buttons in kernel mode. Maybe in the next version I'll release two separate versions. One in kernel mode for 1.0&1.5 users with volume buttons implemented and one for 2.x users with the volume buttons not implemented. I'll think about it. Thanks for the idea. :)
@133) Check out some of the earlier comments. People have posted their own settings to get the buttons to work. The setup I included in the readme file is exactly what I use and all the buttons work. But not everyone is having the same luck. Try giving their setups a shot and see if it works. Good luck.
