Daedalus

Update! A new version of this emulator has been released enabling it to be run in User Mode so it is compatible with 2.0 Firmware, as well as 1.0 and 1.50 Firmware. The R2 update also fixes some of the minor issues that were being reported, such as hardcoded firectories and missing files. The download has been updated as of 5:00pm EST.

Yep we have a N64 Emulator! StrmnNrmn has released the first public build of his N64 Emulator, Daedalus. And it's working pretty good. Although it's a port, it still shows that given the right amount of perseverance, anything can be achieved.

Here's what's not working for now :
  • There is no savegame support.
  • There is no audio support.
  • Not all the N64 controls can be used.
  • Large ROMs (i.e. over 8MB) cannot be loaded.
  • Many roms won't boot.
  • Many roms have serious graphical glitches.
  • Many roms have random lockups and crashes.
  • Most roms run at a low framerate.
It will be solved in further updates.

Without further ado, here's some screenshots.

DaedalusDaedalus

DaedalusDaedalus

Daedalus

It isn't running at full speed, but heck, it's better than nothing - there are atleast  few running games. Plus, the application is open source. So anybody can check it out and improve it. Make sure to check out the readme. It's filled with a lot of important info.

Edit: Technically, it was PSMonkey who released the first N64 Emulator, even though it only ran Homebrew ROMs. Our apologies to PSMonkey.

And thanks for the heads-up Wutale

I dont know why you mention donkey. He has not even given anything creditable to believe his is real.

Also technicaly i was first since i did release an early build that ran homebrew n64 roms. (but i really dont care)

Anyways the emu is great and off to a great start but after checking the source, he definantly needs to cut down on the overhead. There is a little tooo much. Either way the guy did a bang up job. I look forward to communicating with him to improve both our emulators.

» I have high hopes!

I believe with a combined effort of both PSMonkey and StrmnNrmn we will have a nicely working N64 emulator soon.

However, it seems we have minor ego problems here, as the author mentioned on another site that the only reason he released it was because he was tired of seeing PSMonkey this and that. And of course we have PSMonkey's ego getting hurt because of his, " technically i was first since i did release an early build that ran homebrew n64 roms".

Can these two put aside their differences and create an amazing N64 emulator, something some people never thought could happen? Or is their too much "bragging rights" at stake?

Only time will tell! Let's hope for the best!

» um... HAX!

How did this come out from under a rock like that :'-) That's amazing... I remember just posting about this emulator yesterday talking like it would be months before we got this far. If PSMonkey is correct on the overhead, I can only imagine what might come out next week or after that. I don't think the two guys are having too difficult of a time, their both great programmers and their statements both make complete sense.

PSMonkey did come out with the major breakthroughs first and all of our hope was placed with him, and then we have StrmnNrmn sitting back with an emulator of his own that has since ousted out the performance of Monkey64 and doesn't get the respect his work deserves because no one really knows about it. Their own egos never really clashed as far as I see, it was more of the homebrew communities comments that were affected the authors due to their lack of knowledge of the things going on behind the scenes and lack of research.

Now that they can work together, I think they won't have a problem putting back the ego a bit as N64 emulation is what is actually important to it. The best thing for the scene AND for their egos is to work on it together. I see it as a win win situation. :) Keep up the great work guys.

PS. I hope StrmnNrmn has a donation box ready.

To by I Like,

Actualy there are no egos between us. Me & the author have already started contacting each other to see if we can help each other out. :) Hopefuly it will help me to get a build of monkey64 out quicker (I mostly needs to fix texture issues before i post a build).

Its cool. I just felt like mentioning it but I would have not cared much if you didnt' change it.

This is the creator of the original for PC thats why its so slow. Now that he's released this, only good things can come from this. PSmonkeys emulator is actually MORE compatible with roms, and is faster in some situations. Only thing he needs to do now is get the textures/graphics working like this emu and people with 2.6 should be very happy. =]

[ADMIN EDIT: This one always gets me. 7 times out of 10, news of a program release is posted here first, but other sites don\'t ever source us - nor should they have to unless the program was released on our forums only. But those other 3 times when another site has the news of a release first, we\'re expected to source them for it? Rubbish, jealousy, and sour grapes. -Jake D.]

I got supermario64 to work on my 2.6 psp just by changing the name of the rom to "rom.v64" and it works fine, a bit slow but still. I have oinly tried it on 222mhz which is the default mode on the eloader bock alternate. It might work faster if I try it on 333mhz on the eloader but i'm not sure if it will freeze up or something like that, so I'll try that later.

Very interesting..

Just out of nowhere this guy (StrmnNrmn, author of well known Daedalus n64 emu) drops by the PSP scene and releases his original n64 emulator ported to PSP. Also, releasing the source is very much appreciated.

I think I can speak for most of us when I say, I am truly impressed.

Hats off to you sir!

Now obviously, StrmnNrmn and Monkey should have a chat sometime.

» @151

StrmnNrmn is a very talented emulator programmer. He wrote Daedalus from scratch and has kept it open source. Not only for this port, he is the original programmer of Daedalus. I used to use it on the PC.

Donkey was just some lamer who put a video fo Mario Kart 64 on his PSP. This emulator is the real deal. With StrmnNrmn and PSMonkey working on this project hopefully we will see a more improved N64 emulator in the coming days.

This emulator is nothing more than a port, so it will not get much further from here.

I think PSmonkey will have an emulator at almost full speed instead of this one. PSmonkey is making his emulator form scratch meaning that it was PSP specific, meaning he could take advantage of the PSP HW capabilities better

They're making dreams come true.

We should start a Make-A-Wish Foundation for PSP homebrew where kids with life-threatening illnesses wish for the one thing they want on their PSP more than anything else. Then, with the collected tax-deductible charity funds, we could help developers make those wishes come true.

Maybe that wasn't the greatest idea in the world,

a kid dying in a hospital bed, unable to get up to turn on his N64/etc., who only wishes he could play Zelda once more before his untimely death.

Me (PSmonkey), am working on a n64 emulator called Monkey64. It's writen from scrach but heavly based on PJ64 & Mupen64. I also get alot of n64 suport from zilmar the author of PJ64. You can visit my site at nemo.dcemu.co.uk

Daedalus (this emu) is by StrmnNrmn, StrmnNrmn is the original author of Daedalus for PC (I belive xbox also). This emulator is a direct port of his PC emulator with additional work made to make it work on psp.

Donkey64/(cant remember name) is an emulator by PSDonkey. There is alot of controversy over this emulator as nothing creditable has been given to back up the emulators claim (of almost near perfect emulation). The only suposet person to have a build is a 10 year old kid (suposetly) by the name of PSUser10 at psp-hack.com. Nobody of creditable means has seen the emulator in person. It is ultimately believe to be fake.

All three authors are different people and nobody is someone else under a different name. Anybody stating otherwise is just really ignorant.

This is great news besides a GBA emulator that runs a decent speed this was the last great system that even had a chance of working on the psp. Sincesony is working on a PS1 emulator I don't count that one. And the other systems just won't happen the psp just isn't powerfull enough.

Also to all the people who keep saying that psmonkey sucks or got owned of whatever crap they spew. Everyone was praising him for his work earlier and now you turn on him, why? Don't you know that compitition is a good thing it makes for a better end product? What if there was only one kind of soda or game system or what not? Then there would be no need for the makers to improve on it. Once psmonkey releases his and it works better or just as good as this one then everyone will be back to loving him again.

» There is ONE and ONLY, albeit not foolproof solution.

Anonymous, even unregistered posting must be eliminated. Donlkey this, Donkey that, you're all fueling the fire with every post. You don't feed a troll, you let them spew random crap until they get bored and go do something else, and every time people interact with him as if he's a person. Pft, trolls aren't people, more like immaturity and boredom incarnate.

Anyway, point is, you can't stop it like this. Telling him he's wrong feeds the fire, telling people to ignore him never works and is fundamentally flawed because it involves paying a great deal of attention to him.

Eliminate unregistered posting, and force Donkey, the sad little basement-dweller, to make accounts if he wants to spam. You'll have to IP ban him several times, I'm sure, just like on dcemu, but it'll eliminate the rapid spamming he does here.

You admins are intelligent people, and you must realize how bad of an image users like Donkey give PSPUpdates. I've lost a great deal of respect for the site myself, but that's not really fair--there are plenty of respectful and intelligent users here. I urge you, disable unregistered posting. Users who have something important to say will register if need be, big deal, but this NEEDS to stop.

If you get a blank grey "Daedalus" screen, which crashes when you press "x", then rename your ROM's so they have a .v64 extension, instead of .z64 or .rom. You don't need to convert them, just renaming them should work. If that fails, try zipping the ROM up.

Also, when I run it @ 333 mHz via iRShell, it runs no better than when I run it regularly (at least for the 1.50 firmware release).

wow, outta nowhere... it appears that psmonkeys emulator has the speed advantage, and this new katt gots the texture advantage. PSMonkeys emulator can go about 30 times faster than this one. But this ones textures are much much better. How about mixing the two? I heard that the top framerate achieved is like 2fps. Not good. I saw PSMonkeys go about 30 at one point on a screenshot.Yeah, mix the two, that should make a much better one. It seems this one is too damn slow, and the other one by PSMonkey is to ugly, lol! That evens it out!

I don't really get why the emulator has such a hard time rendering textures and emulate games at full speed, if the DS can do a port of n64 games (e.g. super mario 64) at full speed, then the psp shouldn't have much issues at all.

If my memory serves me correctly, way back when there was a small Austrailian PSP dev site who claimed they were working on a DS emulator for the PSP. Well it was then found out that they were using that to draw attention to the fact that they were working on a N64 emu, which was shortly scrapped after their main coder gave up, but they did report it playing SM64 at .1 FPS.

Yep we have a N64 Emulator! StrmnNrmn has released the first public build of his N64 Emulator, Daedalus. And it's working pretty good. Although it's a port, it still shows that given the right amount of perseverance, anything can be achieved.

Here's what's not working for now :

There is no savegame support.

There is no audio support.

Not all the N64 controls can be used.

Large ROMs (i.e. over 8MB) cannot be loaded.

Many roms won't boot.

Many roms have serious graphical glitches.

Many roms have random lockups and crashes.

Most roms run at a low framerate.

It will be solved in further updates.

SECONDLY, it already runs at 333mhtz, that should be a STANDARD in the devs eyes to get maximal performance, infact read the first "stats flash" then run irshell set it to 222, then go back before loading a rom to see the speed, exactly it has changed.

BTW it takes irshell out of memory so no returning or mp3's sob...

Nice work but i feel this Port has a very limited lifespan and will be difficult to optimise , Perhaps 20FPS is the highest speed that it will reach ingame,

I can't understand why everyone is extremely excited, the best game is mario with the first level with messed up texture's that takes ages to figure out where to go.

I Believe that PSmonkey's EMU will achieve much more than this because

a) Coded from Scratch Especially for PSP ( Easy to Optimise)

b) Mario Kart 64 already running Ingame

c) speed Reaching around 13-14 FPS WITHOUT a dynamic recompiler (rynarec) which is expected to give the Emulater a massive boost in speed

d) Very Dedicated Programmer that i believe won't abandon the project ( Even with all u PSPupdates F*CKHEADS)

Now I am excited about this N64 emulator release but it's potential is very limited and as said before this is due to it being a port.

Some people who have really no idea what they are talking about have said this emulator is already light years ahead of PsMonkeys.

That statement immediately shows their complete lack of any understanding between porting an emulator or indeed any application and coding one from the ground up completely from scratch.

This N64 port that has just been released can only get so much better and has limited scope for optimisation.

Although PsMonkeys Emulator may appear to be more behind, it is in fact the one that is light years ahead of this one that has just been released.

PsMonkeys N64 Emulator is the one that will be the fastest and most playable in the end. It is the difference between quality and quantity.

I would not pay attention to those who disrespected PsMonkey since it is obvious they are just random trouble makers.

I hope these two dev's work together because it will be great. Keep up the good work and please pay no attention to all of the noobs, trouble makers and people who have no clue as to what they are talking about.

A Port of an emulator compared to one coded from scratch is like comparing a newly built building to an existing building that has been renovated.

OK WAIT A SECOND. If you can make an N64 emu run on a PSP,.......Why wouldn't they just make PSP games look that good? Cause right now PSP games look like *****. Absolute *****!

» too slow

why release a half assed release and not release a full working version. this is basically running an n64 emu on a what p1 233mhz .. lol . runs like shyt. but hey it is a start . yet it sucks that I cant really play jack at 8fps :

» # 310: Think someone mention it in one of the comments

Its calling PROGRESS. Which mean it has (well not really) to be released to the public, so we can decide how it works and how well the development goes.

Right now, after just two releases, it works better than great.

But I think the EMU should have some kind of number, like 0.2alpha or something. Maybe it has but havent seen it.

» For those having problems with ROMS

For those of you guys having problems, trying to run your roms (got the black screen after pressing a button), please try renaming the extension of your ROM file to .v64 it worked to me.

And if you allow me, I'd like to suggest a mapping for controls to the developers:

PSP N64

------------------------------------

Dpad Dpad

Analog Stick Analog Stick

Start Start

Square B

Cross A

Triangle L

Circle R

R Z

L+Square C right

L+Cross C down

L+Triangle C up

L+Circle C right

Thank you for this great EMU... Way to go developers...

Hope the team up PSPMonkey + Daedalus bring us some amazing progress!!!

SOME OF YOU WHO SAID.. " IT DOESNT WORK ON 2.01+ FIRMWARE" ARE TOTALLY WRONG... I GOT IT TO WORK WITH THE FANJITA'S ELOADER LAST NIGHT ON MY PSP 2.50.

THE REASON PSMokeys emu gets 10 fps is because half the textures, colours, and animations arent emulated !!!

ONCE EMULATION IS AT LEAST 70% COMPLETELY IT WILL GO TO 4-5 fps!

Nothing else to add really. Thank you so, so much. PSMonkey was getting along great, but this just blows mah MIND! Sorry for the disgusting name, but this is just so great! I bet TeamOverload and other 2.7'ers are kicing themselves right now for updating.

Well done PSMonkey, and I want to marry you Pranav T.

by Llanowyn - 2006-05-02 05:28
» Interesting.

Future tweaks to this look promising, and with some source code analysis, I'm sure Monkey will get some ideas to fix his texture problem.

Thank you both, without developers, us 1.5fw users would be left in the past and sony would be much happier.

by poorwhitetrash - 2006-05-02 05:37
» hrmmmm....

I will say this.... I think that theses gentlemen, strmnnrmn and psmonkey are both more talentd than 99% of people that are crying and flamming here. Why? Because they have actually coded emulators that work to variing degrees. Which is more than can be said for anyone else.

I also dont get why you kids are crying and *****ing so much. They are doing this for FREE. Since they are coding great stuff for YOU for FREE, you no longer have the right to *****. Limit yourselves to giving constructive feedback, be it positive or negative. But flaming is going to do nothing but drive these guys to not want to do this for YOU.

And as for all you people that are crying over your 2.6 not running homebrew and whatnot.... tough titty. You should never have upgraded. Only you are to blame for not having the 1.5. And if you bought with that 2.x on it, that is also your own damned fault when places like HK have PSPs that can be up-downgraded to 1.5.

So, in summary, quit your *****ing about your crappy fw 2.x and quit attacking the coders. Also, quit making something out of nothing. I have never read psmonkey or strmn nrmn attack one another or say anything bad to one another. They seem to want to collaborate on this for the greater good of us all. So quit typing words on how they must feel for this or that reason.

Thats my 2 cents on this.

» this is really donkey's emualtor

ok this has been floating around for along time now that this is really donkey's emulator. everyone on all websites is saying that donkey changed his name to this new guy so that people wouldn't flame the name donkey anymore. this is actually donkey's first build he made over a month ago and plans to release his latest build some time soon that runs really good with all n64 roms. i for one am glad that donkey change his name to this strmnnrmn name because donkey was getting alot of flaming with his donkey name. I am just glad that donkey finally relased to us his first version and I hope that he gives us the latest version he has soon. We all appriciate your hard work donkey!

» dipshts

so many dipshts in these comments that don't understand the difference between a port and building something from the ground up and just turn on PSmonkey cause this has texture support. even if StrmnNrmn's emulator is the winner in the end why the hell would u want to bash PSmonkey. the more coders we have working on emulators and homebrew the better.

» dipshts2

it's always fanjita is god this or mph pwns that, or Dark_alex is the best all others suck. why do these people have to pick one developer and hate the rest? like i said before the more people working on things the better. they're not going to want to do it anymore if everyone turns on them when theres an alternate project.

i cant get the damn roms to run. i mean my roms are rar files like for example supermario64 is 6.26mb rared.....i drag that in the rom folder and nothing happens i just get a black screen after its saying loading rom. so i then extract the rar file and now its like 143mb..so i know it cant run like that/..how the F*CK you guys get the roms running? what do you do when your rom is a rar file. i renamed it to that "rom.v64" and that didnt work either...it was asked like 6 or 7 times, but nobody replies, cause everyones on this ps donkey monkey daedalus sh*t about whos version will be better.!!! how about helping us people that cant get the roms running!!! help please!!

» button layout

cross=A

square=B

L+R=L+R

we can live without a d pad for most games

» @ 332

Try zipping it in .zip. It works with that. And there's a problem if the .rar file unzips from 6.26 MB to 143 MB . . .

I've only gotten SM64 working so far . . . Mario Kart 64, Fighter's Destiny 2, Kirby, Goldeneye, and all the other great games are above 8 MB.

And everyone, please stop the flaming! It's not doing anything constructive. And Daedalus isn't a coder.

» this too

by allan_apple - 2006-05-02 08:55
» Buttons layout... (my suggestion)

As forementioned, I personally think that the best lay out would be:

PSP - N64

Dpad - Dpad

Analog - Analog

Start - Start

Square - B

Cross - A

Triangle - L

Circle - R

R - Z

L+Square - C left

L+Cross - C down

L+Triangle - C up

L+ Circle - C right

But fully customizable controls would be way much better (so everyone can have it, their own manner)...

thanks for your reply. thought i was just going to get ignored,lol....well my rar file for mario64 is indeed 6.26mb but when i right click and pick extract here, like i said before it makes alot of little files of like 30mb each totaling 143mb...but when i chose to open with zip it just makes that same one file which is the rar file of 6.26mb. i tried it once with mischief makers. i extracted the rar file which at first was like 5mb, then made it into 45mb...then i made all those files to a zip file, and the n64 emulator recognized it.so i tried it and it loaded only till it said treasure. so why cant i get mario64 running? i just dont get it!! should i get n64 roms in zip files? instead of rar?

by wattywatts - 2006-05-02 09:31
» 332

Dude how can you NOT get the roms to work? You can't load a .rar file, and you cannot rename it to *.v64. Its still a .rar file with a different extention. Thats just moronic. You have to extract the .rar file. You can run .zip files, and .v64 files. Mario is the only game that really works that great, and its slow as hell, but you dont need to zip it. just put mario.v64 in your rom folder and thats it. but dont take a .rar file and name it .v64. extract the f*cking .rar so it actually is a .v64 file you moron.

» You have to try these two games!!

BomberMan Hero and BomberMan64. For whatever reason, texture wise they are near perfect and as for speed they run around 5-7fps and sometimes much more!!

The only issue is you might as well go away and make a cup of coffee while it loads up haha. If this N64 emulation is really perfected, it will revolutionise the Psp completely. In my opinion the Snes TYL emulator has increased the Psp's value ten fold but N64 emulator will be the icing on the cake. I say keep it going guys, you have my 100% support and appreciation. Oh I am sure in time many will donate too, I certainly will be donating.

» To PSmonkey

Look psmonkey, this emulator being a port and all, is real good, I have a suggestion that will make users shut up concerning the buttons, just like the PC has the ability to change button config, maybe you can, contact the authors of PJ64, you could also try to include a 333mhz enhacer for the emu; I will be glad to help anyway possible, I have over 71 N64 ROMs already including Resident Evil 2 and Conker`s BFD- adn not too many people notice but, this game have a lot of graphics even PJ64 has a hard time with it. Some people protest about your emu taking so much time, but seriously building an emulator from scratch is better than a port, you have 100% of my support! Keep it up!
