N64 Emulator Released - Daedalus! *UPDATE* |

Ó

Update! A new version of this emulator has been released enabling it to be run in User Mode so it is compatible with 2.0 Firmware, as well as 1.0 and 1.50 Firmware. The R2 update also fixes some of the minor issues that were being reported, such as hardcoded firectories and missing files. The download has been updated as of 5:00pm EST.
Yep we have a N64 Emulator! StrmnNrmn has released the first public build of his N64 Emulator, Daedalus. And it's working pretty good. Although it's a port, it still shows that given the right amount of perseverance, anything can be achieved.
Here's what's not working for now :
- There is no savegame support.
- There is no audio support.
- Not all the N64 controls can be used.
- Large ROMs (i.e. over 8MB) cannot be loaded.
- Many roms won't boot.
- Many roms have serious graphical glitches.
- Many roms have random lockups and crashes.
- Most roms run at a low framerate.
Without further ado, here's some screenshots.

It isn't running at full speed, but heck, it's better than nothing - there are atleast few running games. Plus, the application is open source. So anybody can check it out and improve it. Make sure to check out the readme. It's filled with a lot of important info.
Edit: Technically, it was PSMonkey who released the first N64 Emulator, even though it only ran Homebrew ROMs. Our apologies to PSMonkey.
And thanks for the heads-up Wutale

Also technicaly i was first since i did release an early build that ran homebrew n64 roms.
Anyways the emu is great and off to a great start but after checking the source, he definantly needs to cut down on the overhead. There is a little tooo much. Either way the guy did a bang up job. I look forward to communicating with him to improve both our emulators.

However, it seems we have minor ego problems here, as the author mentioned on another site that the only reason he released it was because he was tired of seeing PSMonkey this and that. And of course we have PSMonkey's ego getting hurt because of his, " technically i was first since i did release an early build that ran homebrew n64 roms".
Can these two put aside their differences and create an amazing N64 emulator, something some people never thought could happen? Or is their too much "bragging rights" at stake?
Only time will tell! Let's hope for the best!

PSMonkey did come out with the major breakthroughs first and all of our hope was placed with him, and then we have StrmnNrmn sitting back with an emulator of his own that has since ousted out the performance of Monkey64 and doesn't get the respect his work deserves because no one really knows about it. Their own egos never really clashed as far as I see, it was more of the homebrew communities comments that were affected the authors due to their lack of knowledge of the things going on behind the scenes and lack of research.
Now that they can work together, I think they won't have a problem putting back the ego a bit as N64 emulation is what is actually important to it. The best thing for the scene AND for their egos is to work on it together. I see it as a win win situation. :) Keep up the great work guys.
PS. I hope StrmnNrmn has a donation box ready.

Please keep your flames to yourself. Spammers/Flamers will be dealt with severely.

Actualy there are no egos between us. Me & the author have already started contacting each other to see if we can help each other out. :) Hopefuly it will help me to get a build of monkey64 out quicker (I mostly needs to fix texture issues before i post a build).
Pranav T,
Its cool. I just felt like mentioning it but I would have not cared much if you didnt' change it.

Wii is incredible, like me Wii Wii. It is the most innovative thing in the universe. It's all good, because Nintendo invented everything in the Universe in seven days and seven nights.
If you don't believe me, you can ask any sheep, and they will tell you the same thing. This is a fact. It's true, because Nintendo played with many Wii-Wiis.

But those other 3 times when another site has the news of a release first, we\'re expected to source them for it? Rubbish, jealousy, and sour grapes. -Jake D.]

Just out of nowhere this guy (StrmnNrmn, author of well known Daedalus n64 emu) drops by the PSP scene and releases his original n64 emulator ported to PSP. Also, releasing the source is very much appreciated.

Hats off to you sir!

This emulator is nothing more than a port, so it will not get much further from here.
I think PSmonkey will have an emulator at almost full speed instead of this one. PSmonkey is making his emulator form scratch meaning that it was PSP specific, meaning he could take advantage of the PSP HW capabilities better

We should start a Make-A-Wish Foundation for PSP homebrew where kids with life-threatening illnesses wish for the one thing they want on their PSP more than anything else. Then, with the collected tax-deductible charity funds, we could help developers make those wishes come true.
Maybe that wasn't the greatest idea in the world,
but I'm sure SOMEWHERE in this big world, there's
a kid dying in a hospital bed, unable to get up to turn on his N64/etc., who only wishes he could play Zelda once more before his untimely death.
Yeah. Well take your time, both of you, and don't listen to these lame flamers. Release stuff when you want to, where you want to, and how you want to. You're making this masterpiece. You're in control.

#178, PSmonkey just doesnt have all the stuff put in. Also his emulator is coded from scratch.

I hope that they both work together and bring the best N64 emulator ever out. As someone has said before that they both know the N64 hardware and PSP hardware reasonably well so why should we complain if we soon could be playing zelda at full speed with sound ?
This makes the reason of buying an extra PSP battery valid

Holy *****, if this ever runs on eloader with Goldeneye.
Good luck with that its hard enough to run a N64 emulator on 1.5.
This feels great to be on the right side of the firmware wars. To all the people whoever doubted 1.5/2.0. Enjoy this release.

Me (PSmonkey), am working on a n64 emulator called Monkey64. It's writen from scrach but heavly based on PJ64 & Mupen64. I also get alot of n64 suport from zilmar the author of PJ64. You can visit my site at nemo.dcemu.co.uk
Daedalus (this emu) is by StrmnNrmn, StrmnNrmn is the original author of Daedalus for PC (I belive xbox also). This emulator is a direct port of his PC emulator with additional work made to make it work on psp.
Donkey64/(cant remember name) is an emulator by PSDonkey. There is alot of controversy over this emulator as nothing creditable has been given to back up the emulators claim (of almost near perfect emulation). The only suposet person to have a build is a 10 year old kid (suposetly) by the name of PSUser10 at psp-hack.com. Nobody of creditable means has seen the emulator in person. It is ultimately believe to be fake.
All three authors are different people and nobody is someone else under a different name. Anybody stating otherwise is just really ignorant.

If he really worked for SCE, he would never even post the new code in public.
And BTW, none of the roms work, Super mario 64 freezes at peaches' letter at beginning, and mario kart freezes at start screen.

Also to all the people who keep saying that psmonkey sucks or got owned of whatever crap they spew. Everyone was praising him for his work earlier and now you turn on him, why? Don't you know that compitition is a good thing it makes for a better end product? What if there was only one kind of soda or game system or what not? Then there would be no need for the makers to improve on it. Once psmonkey releases his and it works better or just as good as this one then everyone will be back to loving him again.

EACH TIME one of you mentions Donkey this, Donkey that, Donkey sucks, he's a fake, this, that... bla bla...... --YOU-- are contributing to Donkey's play, and you are in fact the one who's keeping this Donkey "myth" (maybe not a good word) alive.
PLEASE, dear lord.. FOR F*CK SAKE.... ----STOP---- mentioning Donkey!!!!!
I also aim this post to PSMonkey himself.
PSMonkey, you keep mentioning Donkey often in your posts (albeit only to discredit him) but still this keeps the Donkey word alive. JUST DROP IT PLEASE
IF WE --ALL-- forget about Donkey's little prank and NEVER mention it again... we can finally show some respect to the --REAL-- emulator programmers.
I know I must look like an idiot right now with all the random CAPS and childish sentences, but IM SO F*CKIN SICK of this whole Donkey thing. I'm really goin f*ckin crazy here.
Some last words....
StrmnNrmn and PSMonkey, keep up the dev'ing!
Ignore the kiddies, ignore the whiners, ignore the impatient "end users".
Focus on programming and lets keep this REAL, like how the old emulation scene used to be.
Im out.

Anyway, point is, you can't stop it like this. Telling him he's wrong feeds the fire, telling people to ignore him never works and is fundamentally flawed because it involves paying a great deal of attention to him.
Eliminate unregistered posting, and force Donkey, the sad little basement-dweller, to make accounts if he wants to spam. You'll have to IP ban him several times, I'm sure, just like on dcemu, but it'll eliminate the rapid spamming he does here.
You admins are intelligent people, and you must realize how bad of an image users like Donkey give PSPUpdates. I've lost a great deal of respect for the site myself, but that's not really fair--there are plenty of respectful and intelligent users here. I urge you, disable unregistered posting. Users who have something important to say will register if need be, big deal, but this NEEDS to stop.

Yep we have a N64 Emulator! StrmnNrmn has released the first public build of his N64 Emulator, Daedalus. And it's working pretty good. Although it's a port, it still shows that given the right amount of perseverance, anything can be achieved.
Here's what's not working for now :
There is no savegame support.
There is no audio support.
Not all the N64 controls can be used.
Large ROMs (i.e. over 8MB) cannot be loaded.
Many roms won't boot.
Many roms have serious graphical glitches.
Many roms have random lockups and crashes.
Most roms run at a low framerate.
It will be solved in further updates.
Without further ado, here's some screenshots.Update!

152. » This works on my 2.6 psp!!!
I got supermario64 to work on my 2.6 psp just by changing the name of the rom to "rom.v64" and it works fine, a bit slow but still. I have oinly tried it on 222mhz which is the default mode on the eloader bock alternate. It might work faster if I try it on 333mhz on the eloader but i'm not sure if it will freeze up or something like that, so I'll try that later.

It wont work on 2.60
SECONDLY, it already runs at 333mhtz, that should be a STANDARD in the devs eyes to get maximal performance, infact read the first "stats flash" then run irshell set it to 222, then go back before loading a rom to see the speed, exactly it has changed.
BTW it takes irshell out of memory so no returning or mp3's sob...
Now, has ANYONE found any games that run perfectly? i really want to try some games, but theres too many to wade through.
Zelda Ocarina of Time, will NEVER work, the rom itself is slightly larger than 55mb.
Super Mario 64 works a treat, but lag lag lag.
I want to try more, and atm, Goldeneye 64 dosnt seem to fit in the 8mb limit... *sob*

I can't understand why everyone is extremely excited, the best game is mario with the first level with messed up texture's that takes ages to figure out where to go.
I Believe that PSmonkey's EMU will achieve much more than this because
a) Coded from Scratch Especially for PSP ( Easy to Optimise)
b) Mario Kart 64 already running Ingame
c) speed Reaching around 13-14 FPS WITHOUT a dynamic recompiler (rynarec) which is expected to give the Emulater a massive boost in speed
d) Very Dedicated Programmer that i believe won't abandon the project ( Even with all u PSPupdates F*CKHEADS)

i can confirm that Quest64 and Mario Kart64 is running on 2.6 EU Firmware very well. I used the lastest eLoader vom Fanjita, with eMenue 0.1 final. Great work! Hope, we discover a *bug* in future firmware releases because Sony su**s with his security flames... but this is the commercial way of life ;)
Keep going on!!

To all those that keep saying "Why is everyone excited about this?" - Sorry to state the obvious but.... this is called PROGRESS.
Keep up the great work creators - put your heads together and create something amazing :)

Now I am excited about this N64 emulator release but it's potential is very limited and as said before this is due to it being a port.
Some people who have really no idea what they are talking about have said this emulator is already light years ahead of PsMonkeys.
That statement immediately shows their complete lack of any understanding between porting an emulator or indeed any application and coding one from the ground up completely from scratch.
This N64 port that has just been released can only get so much better and has limited scope for optimisation.
Although PsMonkeys Emulator may appear to be more behind, it is in fact the one that is light years ahead of this one that has just been released.
PsMonkeys N64 Emulator is the one that will be the fastest and most playable in the end. It is the difference between quality and quantity.
I would not pay attention to those who disrespected PsMonkey since it is obvious they are just random trouble makers.
I hope these two dev's work together because it will be great. Keep up the good work and please pay no attention to all of the noobs, trouble makers and people who have no clue as to what they are talking about.
A Port of an emulator compared to one coded from scratch is like comparing a newly built building to an existing building that has been renovated.

PS.: (off topic, but still inside) PSOne emulator where are you??? C'mon PacManFan tell us you did not give up... Oh what a dream it'd be to play my PSOne games and N64 in my PSP... And I don't want that thing that would make me upgrade from SONY, I don't want to pay for my PSOne games over again, to play some adaptions from SONY... I want to choose the games I want myself...

Right now, after just two releases, it works better than great.
But I think the EMU should have some kind of number, like 0.2alpha or something. Maybe it has but havent seen it.

And if you allow me, I'd like to suggest a mapping for controls to the developers:
PSP N64
------------------------------------
Dpad Dpad
Analog Stick Analog Stick
Start Start
Square B
Cross A
Triangle L
Circle R
R Z
L+Square C right
L+Cross C down
L+Triangle C up
L+Circle C right
Thank you for this great EMU... Way to go developers...
Hope the team up PSPMonkey + Daedalus bring us some amazing progress!!!

Well done PSMonkey, and I want to marry you Pranav T.

Thank you both, without developers, us 1.5fw users would be left in the past and sony would be much happier.

I also dont get why you kids are crying and *****ing so much. They are doing this for FREE. Since they are coding great stuff for YOU for FREE, you no longer have the right to *****. Limit yourselves to giving constructive feedback, be it positive or negative. But flaming is going to do nothing but drive these guys to not want to do this for YOU.
And as for all you people that are crying over your 2.6 not running homebrew and whatnot.... tough titty. You should never have upgraded. Only you are to blame for not having the 1.5. And if you bought with that 2.x on it, that is also your own damned fault when places like HK have PSPs that can be up-downgraded to 1.5.
So, in summary, quit your *****ing about your crappy fw 2.x and quit attacking the coders. Also, quit making something out of nothing. I have never read psmonkey or strmn nrmn attack one another or say anything bad to one another. They seem to want to collaborate on this for the greater good of us all. So quit typing words on how they must feel for this or that reason.
Thats my 2 cents on this.

square=B
L+R=L+R
circle or triange=Z
analog stick=analog stick
D pad=C buttons
we can live without a d pad for most games

I've only gotten SM64 working so far . . . Mario Kart 64, Fighter's Destiny 2, Kirby, Goldeneye, and all the other great games are above 8 MB.
And everyone, please stop the flaming! It's not doing anything constructive. And Daedalus isn't a coder.

PSP - N64
Dpad - Dpad
Analog - Analog
Start - Start
Square - B
Cross - A
Triangle - L
Circle - R
R - Z
L+Square - C left
L+Cross - C down
L+Triangle - C up
L+ Circle - C right
But fully customizable controls would be way much better (so everyone can have it, their own manner)...

The only issue is you might as well go away and make a cup of coffee while it loads up haha. If this N64 emulation is really perfected, it will revolutionise the Psp completely. In my opinion the Snes TYL emulator has increased the Psp's value ten fold but N64 emulator will be the icing on the cake. I say keep it going guys, you have my 100% support and appreciation. Oh I am sure in time many will donate too, I certainly will be donating.
