Map This. - Image 1

Deniska's released a new version of the handy Map This! application. For those who haven't heard of it, this app turns your PSP into a map viewer, allowing for the downloading of maps and use with certain GPS receivers, including the PSP's very own PSP-290 device. Here are the most recent changes to and features of the application:

Features:

The PSP-290 version has some optimizations which may prevent it from hanging in 3.10 FW..

Faster reverse geodata lookup function...

Hopefully better rendering in GPS mode...

  • GPSlim version features most of the things rolled out for PSP-290 version:
  • SAT INFO screen (although display is slightly different from PSP-290 due to difference in GPS feeds)
  • Better trip stats logic - you can now jump in to map mode w/o loosing the trip stats.
  • Map rotation in map mode
  • Faster reverse geodata lookup
  • alpha sort in map/attraction menues..
  • Note: NMEA recording is currently disabled, untill I workout a better logic and interface to support it..

Since GPS-mode rendering logic was changed in both versions you may need to adjust SPEEDFACTOR value in config.txt to allow smother scrolling...

Just remember that this thing doesn't have a readme file, so you may need to ask Deniska for help, if you happen to need it. That being said, you can install it by overwriting the Eboot.PBP with the new one from appropriate folder. After that, just copy the new graphics to system folder. Enjoy!

Thanks to Alomo for the tip.

I'm using MapThis! 0.47 beta with GPSlim 240 ($80+tax&s/h) and a special cable ($25shipped), total of about $110 well spent. Got a nice little setup going with the PSP, a car mount, and the GPS receiver. Now driving in Los Angeles traffic is much more enjoyable than before.

@FRED, notice that I said I bought a special cable for $25, it's a mini-B USB cable that plugs into the GPS receiver, yes, the GPSlim 240 HAS a USB port, in addition to the bluetooth. The other end of the cable plugs into the audio/serial port (like the remote for the headphones), depending on the cable, audio doesn't work, but with some know-how, i'm sure you can make it work. The GPSlim 240 can also connect to the USB port on your computer, that's why there's USB port on the receiver. MapThis uses images from google, msn live, or any other map website that uses what's called "google projection". This means that it can work ANYWHERE in the world as long as you have a map for it. The GPS itself works ANYWHERE in the world, that's the definition of the term GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM, it's GLOBAL. Take this, I have maps of Thailand, let see any other system do that. Granted, MapThis is more of a Map program than a Navigation program, but that's why it's BETA.

@dudeomg, google "Holux GPSlim 240" or check out play-asia.com for the official PSP GPS module. With the GPSlim 240, you'll have to make your own USB cable, or buy one from a guy based in NY, prices for either are about the same, I bought mine for $25 (that includes shipping), took 3 days.

@j, I'm running it on 3.03OE-C

0.48 Beta is only for the PSP-290 people only. There're two variations of MapThis!, one for users who have a "generic" GPS receiver, ie. Holux GPSlim 240, and another for users who have the Sony PSP GPS-290 receiver. Unless i'm mistaken, the current release for the "generic" variation is 0.47 beta.
