For those of us who like to use our Sony PlayStation Portable as a convenient MP3 player, heads up: PSP homebrew developer Sakya has just released a new version of LightMP3, a work-in-progress MP3 player that's a bit more energy-efficient than the handheld's own MP3 player function.
What's new with this version is that users can now customize the way they want LightMP3 to look on their PSPs. Yes, that's right. it's now entirely skinnable, and yes, you can pretty much play around with the values of everything you see on screen - from their position, typeface, typeface color, and so on.
But with LightMP3 still in its ALPHA stages, there's still quite some work to be done. As Sakya admits in the release post, the Media Library function is still missing (although the track data is saved in an SQLite database). When it gets implemented in future versions, users will be able to use the Media Library feature to browse tracks by Artist, Album, Genre, Year, or Rating. Yes, you'll be able to search, too.
What about the battery life-saving feature? It's still the same as the previous version, that is, if you activate Economy Mode while listening to a track. This is done by a press of the START button. Easy, right? Rating your music is easy, too - just hold down X and then tap UP or DOWN on the D-Pad to rate your tracks.
Here's a list of the known bugs in version 2.0.0 of LightMP3:
- FLAC playback is broken (the app crash)
- Suspend doesn't work (the app crash)
- libMAD playback is almost useless (for now) because isn't streamed/buffered and the free memory is only 10Mb)
- USB connection doesn't work
- Help screens are missing

I heard that the application crashed on my friends PSP Slim. I have no idea what the symptoms are, but I think I am going to wait for the full release.
Readers, please be wary of possible crashes. Please.
We'll try to find out what could be the root of the problem, but I hope Sakya would have a clearer picture.
I think i'll stick to the previous version for a bit. Works fine for me. love the flac/ogg support. (download some for free at http://takepillsdie.blogspot.com).
Only thing that's givng problems is creating new playlists. I can't store them.
to solve this:
so i make the playlist, quit the app, got to filer and copy and rename the playlist in the temp folder to the playlists folder and there i have my new playlist. a bit of a hassle, but it works that way.
