IR Shell Special edition coming soon |
Ó
Parts of the homebrew scene went in mourning after the world-famous iR Shell developer Ahman released the final version of his multi-tasking Infrared capable shell which combined well...just about everything you can do on a PSP into one package. Now you guys can come out of your 'shell' as Ahman says that a new release is coming soon! The dev has continued to release beta versions of iR Shell exclusively to beta testers, and over time, these beta releases have built up a tally of decent features that the homebrew public would love to see, and it is for this reason that Ahman has decided to release another version of iR Shell.
Here's a few of the features you can expect in the next version of iR Shell courtesy of Sinx from xmb-psp:
- Allows the use of the 4th brightness setting (maximum) on the LCD. Normally, you can only set the 4th brightness when connected to a power adapter. This new version allows you to activate the 4th brightness anytime by pressing "Left Trigger + Brightness". The setting will also carry over to DevHook firmware emulation when iR Shell is active. To return to normal brightness, press the "Brightness" button.
- The iR Shell Restart key (L+R) under devhook will reset your PSP back to iR Shell under fw 1.5, provided you've installed the iR Shell custom firmware mod.
- Allow redirection of PSP keypad to PC Keyboard or PC Joystick via USB. Devhook 2.71 fw emulation is also supported which means you can use a PC Joystick for SOCOM or Syphon Filter.
- Updated the launch XMB function, so you can leave the game disc in the UMD drive when launching XMB. It will now detect your disc type. If you've a UMD Video disc, it will launch the movie automatically. If it's a UMD Game disc, it will skip the auto-launch and just goes to XMB.
- This version allows you to choose a bitmap image or pmf movie as splash screen. The included sample is Xbox 360. You can try to make your own splash movie. However, it seems pretty complicated.
- Use iR Configurator to choose startup splash type.

I am a beta tester for iR Shell, and I can tell you, the conrtoll redirection will be a little tricky so if you are having problems, join our community.
The article forgot to mention that there is macro support for controll remaping.
I'm so glad you guys will get to use all of these features!

I'm fine with just my harleyq's custom, DH 0.46, SNES Tyl, PSP game torrents, and my beautiful girlfriend Alyssa.
One of the only appealing features, to me at least, of iR Shell is it's ability to play your own music during a game. Imagine blasting Iron Maiden to Killzone: Liberation, or some nice Edith Piaf or Luciano Pavarotti while playing Medal of Honor: Heroes.
I'm just wondering if this feature will be implemented: playing music via USB or WiFi on your PSP during a game (not limited to.) Having the ISOs on the memory stick ends up taking all the music space. =(
Playing ISOs via WiFi on PSP is pretty choppy, so playing music via WiFi sounds just friggin' cool. Maybe that's been done already, I don't know. Just make sure you implement the freedom to play audio files via USB or WiFi on the PSP.

This app has the largest feature set of any homebrew app out there.
Maybe you just haven't ever used it yet. Or you simply don't have a need for any of these:
* custom in-game music
* file browser with copy/paste/rename etc
* Universal Infrared Remote control with support for thousands of devices
* Screenshot function that works anywhere, anytime
* adhoc wifi file transfer between two PSPs (for any file, not just savegames like the Sony XMB)
* Full USBhostFS and NetHostFS support (access MP3s, homebrew, PMP, AVC and MP4 movies and other files on your PC via USB or WiFi)
* Plugins (TXT/PDF/PMP/AVC ...)
* Image viewer with scaling
* ...
There's so much more stuff I can't think of right now :)

A good, solid image viewer to pattern iRShell's after would be the Japanese-dev'd JView. I've tried many image viewers, and at least for Jpegs, that one's performed the best. A plugin would work as well, though obviously a better image viewer within iRShell itself would be most efficient. I'm not complaining; don't get me wrong--iRShell is an excellent piece of work, and I don't have any problem with manually loading up JView to read comics. Just giving suggestions, should you ever want them.
