iR Shell Says Farewell at v2.2 |
Ó
Ahman's iR Shell is arguably one of the best applications ever made for the PSP. However, all good things must come to an end, so with a heavy-heart he announced that this is going to be the final release for the iR Shell.
Being the phenomenal application that it is today, you'd never imagine that it was created through Ahman's failed search for a PSP homebrew that can serve as a wireless controller to his Pentax camera. He's been hard at work on the project since January and he's transformed the then unnamed and potential Pentax camera controller application into the multi-tasking, can't-do-without iR Shell that it is now.
The Pentax camera may have triggered everything in motion, but the legions of dedicated supporters have kept it moving. There's AnonymousTipster, who's responsible for the ZIP and RAR plugins plus in charge of redesigning the iR Shell website. The devoted beta testers, most especially to StoneCut, who helps moderate the forum and help out newbies in the ins and outs of the application. His impressive and well written test reports are essential to the project's development.
Torpie13 for his generous donation for the domain and free T3 hosting service. And if you're still in awe of the UI graphics' transformation, you have these talented graphics artists to thank - Triable, Skydew, Terdinglage, Numeror, PSPHax0r9 and other skin makers. He also extends his sincerest thanks to the different plugin makers and their original authors that makes full use of the iR Shell plugin system.
Changelog:
- The Homebrew directory can be customized under iR Configurator. You can change it from original /PSP/GAME to anything you like. Pls note if you relocate the homebrew directory, XMB won't be able to launch them.
- You can now organize your homebrews into various sub-folders, such as:
- Games
- General Utilities
- WiFi Applications
- This will help to organize your homebrews and make it easier to locate a specific one easier. It also helps to speed up the APP view. The sub-folder must be in the syntax of "$name$". The 2 dollar signs are used to signify this is a folder which contains various homebrews.
- The File Manipulation has been updated for the APP view, so that you can create, rename, delete directories as usual. Pls note when you create directory under APP view, you don't need to put dollar signs and the system will add them automatically.
- A new PMP Mod AVC plugin by Magelo. In order to avoid conflicts with the original PMP Mod 2.02. This new AVC plugin will use extension name "AVC" which means you'll have to rename your pmp avc files to name.avc. The original PMP movie files will still be name.pmp.
- A new beautiful skin "Vista Clarity" by PSPHax0r9.
- Fix a bug which cause the inability to launch a 1.5 UMD game from iR Shell.
- There was a bug in the previous public release which caused "hide splash screen" under iR Configurator not working. It's now fixed.
- A log file "debug.txt" in the root directory has been accidentally left in the previous public release. You can manually remove it.
As a testament to the application's reputation, Ahman is not going to be leaving us hanging in mid-air. In the coming statements, he goes further into the iR Shell's history and functionality, there's even a mention of a possible comeback:
"From the way I look at it, iR Shell is a pretty stable & mature software under fw 1.5. Although it may not meet everybody's expectation, it certainly took me a lot of time & effort in development and I personally enjoy using it very much. Besides full support for fw 1.5, iR Shell also provides some basic support for 2.x firmware emulation under devhook with ability to multi-task with 2.x UMD game and play your favorite mp3s. This support has been introduced since 2.0 official release, but I didn't mention it in the official release note due to many of other iR Shell functions haven't been fully working under devhook environment. Since this is a final release, I've attached a copy of instructions "devhook.txt" which I had posted in my forum for those who wants to enjoy playing your favorite mp3s under devhook. Pls be warned iR Shell isn't too stable under devhook and it may crash your PSP if you choose an unsupported function. In order to make iR Shell running perfectly under Devhook, a lot of hackings still need to be done in higher firmware, such as support on kernel mode homebrew. When 2.x firmware is fully hacked, I may return back with a few more iR Shell updates to make it more complete."
There is no denying the iR Shell's contribution for the whole PSP community, without it, the whole gaming experience wouldn't be the same. The QJ crew is in consensus that this application is a rare breed. Needless to say, aspiring iR Shell-esque applications have darn big shoes to fill.

pls tell me ur kidding....
I haven't used IR Shell until recently and now I realize what all the fuss was about. We will never forget your hard work. Thank you for all of your contributions to the homebrew community.
I'm finally first to a news post!!!!!!! AHH!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!
See you next time, warrior.
You will be missed IRShell and Ahman.
yeah yeah Ir shell is dead but so is file assistant and file assistrant is the best shell ever (and it is a shell retards) ir shell is just popular but it suks. still a homebrew is a homebrew so rip ir shell.
And I was waiting for the iR learning feature.
Now that I thought the fun was beginning it reaches an end!
I will miss (a lot) Ir Shell developments and Ahman´s knowgledge! Today PSP community loses the development of one of the biggest icones ever on this realm... Devhook, Daxziso (and all programs that contributed for them) and IrShell (with all the homebrew associated) are what makes my day with PSP. Now one of the biggest stops...
I hope you take some vacations and after that you pick Irshell up again with fresh ideas and make us a surprise!
Thanks Ahman (and all the people who constantly contributes with homebrew).
ahman amen
r.i.p you brought me hours of enjoyment in school. soo many tvs!!
but im sure that there will always be updates with plugins right?????
i cant believe it, my favorite homebrews, snestyl and irshell, come to an end....its sad, but i know that there is hardley any new features to add in, and if there is, others shall make them, with a the abilities for plugins, the possabilities are endless, thankyou ahman for making my psp alot more open sorce.
come on man you can't give up! =(
...I just recently got a mem stick big enough to be able to have more than 1 game and iR shell at the same time :( Love your work man and thanks a lot.
CATCH YOU ON THE BRICKED SIDE!
we will miss you....i love this program!!!!!
me too i'll miss the good times i had in school with irshell and and tv, vcr, dvd, and at the same time listening to music
AhMam i'll miss u
it would be awesome if u have updates for the ir codes :)
yes they fixed the splash screen bug...its a shame its the final version. best psp shell ever
Thanks a whole bunch ahman. You have dedicated your time to this system and the community and it has paid off. Thank you for all your hard work and of course...IRSHELL! You'll be missed. :)
IR Shell is a great application...it's sad to hear that you are discontinuing the project. Though, it is an awesome app, and I just wanna say thanks.
PS: I hope one day you'll return to improve IR Shell!
sorry to be a bring down, but these last two releases for me at least, the configurator freezes the psp somewhere in the middle of the list. just after app suffix names. i wanted to know if anyone else had this problem. but either way. what a kick ass program. its so well coded youd think it was made by
son........no they wouldnt have the decency.
I have had IRshell since the begginning and it has ALWAYS been my favourite app.
Well done and it will be missed.
oh well ill miss ir shell bye
Your shell is my most used homebrew app, but it's so sad to see you stop developing for it. I (and probably the rest of the community) wish you luck in whatever it is that you plan to do. Good luck and thanks for the great program!
boooo!! :*(
ah well, many thanks for the amazing app u left us with ahman! And plos dont leave the scene, im sure im not the only one who would love to see more apps from you!
I HAVE BEEN SIDE TO SIDE SINCE THE BEGING WITH THIS APP AND I JUST HOPE THEY CHANGE THERE MIND I love THIS APP RIP.
Good app, too bad it is discontinued :'(. The last version seems to be huge though
Maybe he'll release the source code that way someone can pick up where he left off. Or at least someone may learn something from it. I don't think the homebrew community can stand for long if devs get stingy with their code.
Those were the happy days :(
Well, Ahman, really, iRShell is over all expectations and you did a great job all the way around, for that I congratulate you. I use iRshell to replace my XMB (Thanks to Dark_Alex's custom firmware and some configuration of mine) and it makes my PSP so much better (would be even better with a new faceplate since mine is completly cracked... who knows why I always took care of my PSP, whatever.)
In any case, I am sad to see you go but I am sure you will do well in your future endeavour. Good luck, friend.
thanks ahman!!!! i love you dude, for real, irshell is the greatest shell id ever seen, and not only the best shell, its one of my top 3 favorites homebrews(maybe #1),so ahman,i appreciate all youd done for us(psp users),i cried when i saw the post saying that this will be the final release...but its ok,by being the final release,it means its completed and perfect and dont need anymore changes! dude thanks again! ill miss you...i wait you keep making good apps like that 'man.
sincerly;
xulap

Your the best out there Ahman! We love you!
Thanks for the hard work and dedication to IRShell. You have made it the best shell there is, was, and ever will be.
I love IRSHELL, I have it boot up with the firmware mod. Easilly one of the greatest homebrews for psp ever made
What exactly can I do with this thing and which of the five downloads should I get?
thanks for everything ahman!
can someone please tell me how to install it cuz the readme isnt easy to understand.
Thank you in advance.
a Great app like this 1

I used iR Shell once and I just remember gray text, not nearly as sexy as the default PSP xmb. It's probably changed a lot since then, but I don't see the point in running a program just so I can more easily run other programs..
I've spent time to create customated icons/pbp's for all my homebrew complete with back pics, audio, and some animations. I'd hate to lose all that by using a shell.
The only benefit I saw in using any shell was full res backgrounds, as opposed to 1.5's max res of 320x252 or similar.
On the same note, I haven't bothered with custom firmware's yet either, because my PSP does everything I want it to by default (turn on, look good, launch homebrew or Devhook via icon). Am I missing something, what more do you need?
I love iR Shell so much, that i set it up so my PSP autoboot's it no matter what. It's that much better than the XMB. Infact it may be the best app for PSP ever.
My utmost thanks to ahman and all those who contributed to iR Shell. good work.
I think it is highly overratted but I do appreciate all of the time and effort the dev put into this app.
you haven't seen its true potential - playing files over usb or wifi?
playing music over a game?
all the other regular file manipulation features other shells have, as well as ease of launching homebrews (it takes about 2 seconds rather than the 10 it takes the xmb).
the ability to label file extensions as needing certain programs to run them.
the plugins
the ir remote function (where it started, i remember having some fun with that)
you can have your custom icons
these new folder options are a good idea
getting back to irshell with the home button (it's annoying otherwise)
skin support
alarm clock
endlessly configurable
ir shell shows how it should be done, it's slick and very functional. any further changes would simply be cosmetic, so in a way i'm glad ahman has finished it, as now we can all use the 100% working, true version of IRSHELL... still, without further updates it's hard to get excited.
thanks ahman, this app is the most used app i have and i appreciate the hard work.
this was one of the best apps/shell for the pspit will truly be missed
ps, can someone tell me how to autoboot ir shell???
Your program helped in a countless amount of ways. It's sad to see it go. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. Your work will be missed.
Peace
Very good job. You did it. One of the psp legends. SAd to see you go, i thought you did a excellent job.
It Seems Little By Little Every Programer Is Leaving The PSP Scene, Just What SONY Wants...
Good Things Always Come To An END..
FAREWELL... P S P :(

I use IRSHELL for about everything. I can play my .Dax games while listening to my mp3's. I just found out a way that I can play my .CSO's in devhook while listening to my mp3's. This app is great I hardly ever go to the psp xmb because irshell has everything I need. It's really useful when playng Gpsp games so if something crashes I can just switch back and restart much faster than cold booting. The only three things that I have a problem with is 1 Stella atari has no sound options so I cant listen to music while playing, 2 SNES there is a conflict while playing mp3's making the music choppy dont know if that is the SNES prob. or Irshell. Anybody have a solution let me know and 3 Gpsp has no audio options either. I know that these are not Irshell problems but emulator problems except for possibly the SNES one. Ahman you rock man and I will always welcome you back anytime to this great PSP scene. Thanks for all your hard work and for everything you gave us I say Ahmen.
I got lots of questions and it would help if a person experienced in this could show me the ropes. Could you add me to your msn or aim.
AIM is Animeniac113
MSN is Animeniac113
,which is also my email. Thanks.
how exactly did you get mp3's to play while playing cso. well im assuming its the mp3 plugin but i dont have my toolchain setup so i can compile or did you do it another way to get it to work
no more of this shell. the day of victory is getting closer when all homebrew will stop for psp
R.I.P. irShell, IMO the greatest PSP homebrew.
Where does the mp3 plug-in go??
thats f 'ed up man..
i hoped, you were gonna make be the first to make it connect to an ipod.
so i could use it as an hard drive/memory stick
wishful thinking i guess.
Prob thee best one to come along... def gonna miss this!! good work! got a ques if any one can help, how can i use and where can i go to use and get codes for tv channel changin etc...?
If you like the XMB, then you'll love IRShell. Guess what? ICONS. iRSHELL supports showing the icon and backgrounds (including your custom ones) in the app view. It also has an actual icon based GUI for you to chose functions from. Get yourself a good skin and you'll fall in love all over again.
Also, PSP connecting as a host to anything isn't possible, including iPod (unless you hacked the iPod to run USBhost in linux or something). This program really is as close to being complete as possible for the brief but current moment. No one who tries it should be able to complain.
Also, that is just the source to the mp3 plugin already built in to IRShell. You do not install need to install it, its mainly for developers to use in their apps.
Thanks Ahman. Screw Neoflash. Your the first programmer to cram everything I could ask for into an app before leaving. Really, not anything more you could do. I appreciate as always your fast and steady coding and hope others will use you as their rolemodel.
You all remember X-Flash: He said that V9f was the last version for X-flash. And now? We hav Kerrang Build "idontknow" Maybe AhMan will do the same and release more Versions. A Version 3 with IR learning would be awesome!
A Biiiiiiig Thank u for showing us the way PSP apps should be, simple, usefull, and full of features.
Farewell.

//
i wasnt complaing.
i was just saying,
wouldnt that be nice.
Id like an ir shell that cold load isos or cso files
You can already fire up DevHook from within iR Shell, so loading an iso or cso isn't such a big deal...
Anyway, I really like using this program, especially using it as a remote control for the tv in our living room... It's really funny to keep switching it off while my parents are watching it without them knowing it's me with my psp...
Respect for the programmers of this fantastic program!!
iRshell is one of the two homevbrew applications i use almost everytime I boot my PSP, the other being DGEN. Sad to see this be the end, but we're left with a fantastic piece of work non theless.
Respect.
why? it had to come, but i never wanted it to :(
How do i set this up to use as a remote, and do i need to get some sort of codes. some one let me know something
Thank you very much for all your work on IR Shell. I hope your furture projects are as sucessful as this one.
ahman, from what i read in the article, never said that he himself was leaving. who said that?
anyways, I'm not sad that its "discontinued". Its more like "Finished". iR Shell is awesome and its looks look like something Microsoft will pick up on for Vista (or was it the other way around? no matter, point is: looks and IS awesome). Thank you Ahman. Peace!
Thanks for the great app.
yeah me too, can't anyone else do this? It would be great if ir shell could learn codes. A while ago someone released a homebrew that would pick up what's coming through the ir port and dump it as text. Can it be modified in any way?
As for the irshell itself, its great. Excellent work from ahman, he is truly gifted. Thanks a lot for it.
I never could get it to work for any remotes, while Universal-Remote program has worked on anything I ever tried to control.
I also never could get the WiFi stuff to work either.
Maybe someone better with programming will improve on it.
Oh yeah, source is not available. Nevermind.
The remotes work, they just use a different scheme than Universal Remote. Universal Remote loads LIRC codes while iR Shell loads Philips Pronto Codes. The quality of those codes dffer from device to device.
AhMan You will be remembered by me FOREVER! you are among one of the BEST programmers out there, people who say IR shell sucks... well i dont think so, its got TOO many GOOD functions! finally got internet bak and this happens.... WE LOVE YOU AHMAN!!!
Someone should make a a Tiff IR Shell. So many people would love that. Also that sucks that there isnt going to be any more versions. I never got to use it since I have PSP V2.8. But i hear it was really good.
please dont say good bye what about you do it for us whith ver .2.60 via the new kernel loader
