iR Shell 1.6 Unwrapped for PSP |
Ó

Ahman's iR Shell application has definitely become a household name to most PSP owners because of the usefullness and preacticality of its features. The previous version already packs a punch, with the loads of updates great Ahman has equipped version 1.6 with, it's a certified knockout.
This time, aside from allowing us to listen to MP3s while playing games, iR Shell 1.6 enables our PSPs to stream any files via WiFi or USB to any of our fave homebrews. Straight from Ahaman himself:
"Imagine having your whole mp3, movie & photo database on your PC and stream them real time to your PSP via WiFi or USB for unlimited storage and enjoyment. You don't like to convert your movies to PMP format? How about streaming your MP4 movies to Sony's XMB movie player? Having too much fun and can't stop playing your PSP? Well, you can setup an alarm to remind you stop playing. Your favorite shell now gives you all these features at your fingertip, plus a lot more."
Now I'm sure every single PSPanatic out there is barely able to understand/read all the text (heck, I won't be surprised if you miss reading this line) out of sheer anticipation of what these new features really are, so here they are:
- You can now browse your PC harddisk, DVDROM or any other PC storage devices from your PSP via infrastructure WiFi or USB connection and stream files to your homebrew applications. You can even install PSP homebrews on your PC harddisk and launch them on your PSP, just like a huge virtual Memory Stick. 200GB memory stick is now a reality!
- You can open files directly with a single click via iR Shell file browser, such as PMP movies, PMF movies, Atrac3s, mp3s, photos, text files, PDF files, ZIPs, RARs, etc. These files can reside on your Memory Stick or even on your PC storage device.
- Launching XMB within iR Shell which allows you to use all features of XMB, plus taking snapshot of it or UMD Video.
- Alarm clock to remind you important appointments.
- Low battery voice warning to remind you to recharge your battery before it drys up.
As great as a developer Ahman is, he also recognizes that he can't achieve this feat alone, so he wishes to thank the following: Tyranid for making usbhostfs for PSPLINK; Dark Alex for making nethostfs; AnonymousTipster for developing the ZIP & RAR Unarchiver Plugin for iR Shell; StoneCut for being my favorite beta tester; Skydew for providing the new Help image files; Triable for making various nice graphics for iR Shell; Rangedunits for supplying a free hosting service; all original plugin authors; and of course, all iR Shell beta testers for providing valuable suggestions & counterless hours of testing.

Now, as a testament of QJ.Net having one of the best PSP community around, SG57 and Macca from our forums, have released tutorials on how to set up your WiFi Nethost and USBhost for file streaming via iR Shell.
Anticipating the flood of questions, SG57 provided this step by step process for a WiFi NetHost Setup:
1. Download IrShell v1.6
2. Download the Network Host File System Server for Windows.
3. Extract and Install IrShell onto your v1.0/v1.5 PSP
4. Extract the Network Host File System Server file to anywhere on your pc that you want to view, my suggestions is the root, this allows complete access.
5. Launch IrShell
6. Press R+Start and start the Configurator
7. Scroll down to NetHost IP Address option.
8. Click 'X'
9. Now, leave it there for a second while you obtain your IP Address on the local machine.
10. To do this, start the Command Prompt.
Way 1: Start->Run->'cmd'
Way 2: Start->All programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
Way 3: Go into any text editing software, and type in:
"command.com" without the quotes and save it as a .bat file.
11. Now, you may need Admin privleges so, react appropriatley
12. Type in the command prompt: "ipconfig" without the quotes
13. Where it says: IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.PORT#here. PORT#he re (Remember that number or just keep it open)
14. Go to your configurator on your PSP again
15. You should be editing the defualt Ip address provided
16. Replace it with what you get on that line in the command prompt... in my case, I had recieved: IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
17. Now press Start
18. Now go down 1 option and youll see the XMB Network Config Entry for Nethost: with a defualt of 1...
19. Set this to whatever number'd connection your using... Meaning if the connection you want to use is ,in the XMB, 3rd on the list, set this number to 3.
20. Press start.
21. Enable or Disable the Redirection of APP view to host for ms0:/ mounting (for launching folder specific homebrew)
22. Press 'O' to save settings
23. Now go to where you had extracted the Network Host File System Server file, and run the nethostfs.exe file
24. Now, a command prompt should pop up and stay up.. this is opening a port on your computer for the PSP to access, so fire wall'd or not, allow it.
25. Now, just go to your IrShell and if set correctly, press: L+Analog-DOWN and it should initialize your connection and in that command prompt, print some multi-threading issues and what not...
26. NOW! If running homebrew via PC, press: L+Analog-RIGHT This redirects AKA mounts your nethost0:/ drive as ms0:/
27. If you want to stream music and such, just go to the filebrowser, click the '..' AKA cd out of the current directory. Keep doing this until you reach the root of your memory stick... If you click it again, your into the drive selection menu. Here you can view files (if connected) on your HDD via nethost0:/, USb if connected and intialized via usbhost0:/ and UMD via disc0:/... then the reuglar ms0:/ for memory stick
After doing all this (correctly that is), you should be able to enjoy file streaming flawlessly. A few reminders from SG57 though, he says "any time you NEED to Wifi - ically connect, just go to the drive selection in the file browser and click 'nethost0:/' and it will automatically connect."

Now we go to Macca's USBHost tutorial.
1. Download irshell 1.6 and the usb host file drivers (all of which are included in this post)
2. Unzip them to an easy location, I unzipped mine on the root of my d:
3. Start the usbhoststfs.exe
4. Install irshell the usual way
5. Press l+ analog up to start the usb hostfs
6. Windows will now tell you that new hardware has been found, choose to specify a place for the drivers, then choose the directory where you unzipped the usbhostfs file, eg d: in my case. Choose the drivers folder then click next. It should say completed.
7. Hit l+ analog up again and you should be connected!

Pretty simple huh? You should be now enjoying the full features of this awesome app. If, despite all these instructions, you're still having problems with it, don't hesitate to ask questions, I'm sure everyone's as nice as SG57 and Macca and will give you a helping hand.

This makes me wish for a 1.5 psp... Looks great!
Wow...nice, too bad this does'nt work for 2.7. Man i'm missing out on a lot =( 1st Post =P!
What, no more feedback ?!?! Come on people !!! This is one of the best homebrew applications there is !!!
Man this is so awsome, streaming from uSb like OWOWOWOW
THIS PROGRAMME MAKE ME BUY A WIRELESS ROUTER:P
The best shell ever for the PSP, virtual memory stick rocks!
This programm make me buy a giant USB cable, hahahahahah!! say good bye to WI FI it rhymes!
man this ***** IS MAD AHMAN AND OTHERS WELL DONE PSP 1.5 RULES AND WILL LIVE ON NOW JUST GETTING ISO IMAGES TO RUN VIA WIFI WOULD BE MAD THATS MY SUGGESTION
This program is most important one that makes me want a 1,5 fw
200GB memory stick is awesome... but then its no longer portable...
Does anybody know the password to access IR shell?
Normally ive got something very nice and detailed to say about this... but im going totally noob talk now... OMGEEZ!!! NO WAI!!! FRIKEN SWHEAT!!! :D... okay im done, Awesome update!!!
Someone tried Daxziso or devhook with wifi from hdd of a pc ? this would be really nice :)
yea man this is really really really good homebrew. thanks alot to the developer for delivering quality work .things like this make the value of my 1.5 go up :)
Great work, its working flawlessly (yet) ... I think its opening a new perspective for we users of 1.50 THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND FOR MAKING THE ONLY USEFUL SHELL ON THE PSP
doesn't it work on 2.0?? :s
if you want play iso files from your hd watch the last episode from psphacking101...
what about 2.01+? -.- damnit
I know this is cool and all , and i really appreciate it, this kind of stuff is really makin the psp a much greater machine than what sony had planned. I have a minor *****le here thats preventing me from putting it at the top of my xmb ...namely the hidden corrupted files ....on all the folders where they are hidden , those programs dont show up in irshell..which is a shame cos id like to use it as my default shell. if anyoen know how to fix that i offer a 2 million dollar reward . aside from that im gonna be cheking the functionality on this program over the coming weeks.
screw 2.01+!! hahaha
This is definetly the BEST shell out there. My thanks go to Ahman, and I love this shell.
Ah sooooo glad I downgraded last year :P This makes up for the sllloooowwww rate of news comming in.
Can i use external Harddisk???
I'd like to try this "awesome" peice of homebrew, so lemme know when it comes out for 2.6 :P Seriously, I'd really like to try this out !!! The streaming files in real time part is what interests me :D ESPECIALLY movies using USB. I have an excuse for upgrading, I bought Daxter :P...lol.
#19: iR Shell currently doesn't support homebrew which has been renamed with the "SCE__..." scheme. As a workaround you can launch AnonymousTipster's Unpacker plugin from /IRSHELL/EXTAPP/4/EBOOT.PBP via DIR view and use the "Extras" option there. You can then rename these folders to standard naming convention and they will show up in the homebrew menu (APP view). To hide corrupted icons when using iR Shell please use SeiPSPtool or similar instead.
OH MY GOD! i dont have a wifi router, but judging from the usb virtual memory stick, it looks like everyone involved (the guys behing the actual experiments and the irshell coder itself), its a very polished work! we NEED adhoc connection for the wifi virtual drive !!!!! :) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! check out the OFICIAL AHMAN FORUM -> AHMAN.CO.NR
WIFI HDD GREAT THANKS
This is THE BEST homebrew i have come across to date. AMAZING work. Thanks a lot. You guys are wicked. Makes me glad i've stayed on 1.5 After this, the n64 emulator and devhook are the best. I've been with irshell since it came out. It used to be ircommander i think. Anyways, i think you CAN have portable storage streamed through wifi or usb. For usb, use a portable hard disk or something with usb host. But then, where would we install the streamer app? As for wifi, do you think those palm lifedrives could be used? hmmmmm WOOOOOPEEEEE!!!!!
This application has realy grown on me, but now I'm convinced that it's the best shell to date, and the only one I need.
but mp3s dont stream smoothly from wifi :(
Have had this program from day 1, knew it was going to be spectacular, you are too cool.
a Game or a umd isnt a reason for upgrade ... i can play daxter iso on my psp1.5 lol :O
where do you download the Network Host File System Server for Windows?
iR Shell has certainly surpassed my expectations. It's always been a polished useful app but these new features are most impressive. My thanks to everyone involved.
the usb mass storage thing is not working. it's a great idea and i already use irshell, but it's still too early i guess. wifi or usb mass storage arent working (yes i have launched the apropriate hosts on my pc). if someone managed to do it....
@ #33. Look at the list of downloads at the bottom of the main article and you'll see the link: "Download: [Network Host File System Server (Windows Version)]". @ #36. Be sure you follow the steps outlined by the forum members. There's a few things outlined such as having admin rights on the PC which may cause problems...
hey NeiIR thanks for the quick response. so the usb is working right now. i managed to open a jpg and an mp3, everythings cool!! but what about videos? i launched xmb, but there's no way of browsing back the usb folder to open my .mp4 did i miss something?
i dont understand number 19 in the turtorial. can someone just explain. i know that the xmb is the main screen of the psp but if i leaave it at one then would it make my hdd the ms in the xmb when i quit or no??
i know you guys arent the dev of this nice software, but two months ago, i already posted on the guys site about the program not opening pdf that has japanese characters. and also, about the photo viewer, if you could drop in some controls like moving the picture around. these are suggestions for your future release of the greatest psp homebrew ever!
Wow, nice program, Good Job Ahman! Now i can get my PSP Files off my computer when my brother is using it :D.
But But But...what about us mac users!!!! damn it.
Do i need those usb windows file, and what does it do? i got da 1.6 already someone let me know, ty
This is simply stunning.... they've basically taken the functionality of PimPStreamer and PSPRadio... and dumped them into the greatest shell ever for the PSP. This is a day to be remembered and I cannot wait to pack my briefcase and ditch the office so I can run home and throw this sh1t on my 1.5'er! And even though I am thourghly agnostic.... a prayer: Thank you for the PSP I am about to enjoy.... Ahman. ...too corny to resist. ;)
doesn't it work on 2.0?? 16 what the hell is the matter with u? if u have a 2.0 downgrade already and use dev hook then you have the best of both worlds. More homebrew along with a higher firmware then u have
I'M NUMBER 42 YAY, MY FAV NUMBER. WOW I JUST ABOUT FELL OFFA MY CHAIR READING THIS. GREAT JOB AGAIN THERE FOLKS
Wow, this is really brilliant stuff, but when I'm streaming music, I get a lag for a millisecond ever second or so that I'm listening. It's minor but annoying. I hope that's a problem on my end, or I hope that it's fixed soon. Overall, amazingly good job, guys.
im the one who told them about this considering they get news so slowly, its been out for a day already! well they didnt thank me:( but i expect that from them:) so im okay with it at least they finally have something worth posting and not the garbage they have been putting up lately:)
Maybe i wont fire that missile after all. But, you better keep updating it.....or else.
Curse you 2.6 *shakes fist* I want to watch PMP movies that won't fit on my memcard!
K nice stuff, but has anyone got the usb stuff work for Windows XP X64 ?? haven't tryied the wifi yet
Can i use usb external hard-disk?
Finally! Someone makes linux versions of their programs!
Yeah, me too. I have Windows XP 64 Bit and im wondering if the WiFi USB Driver works with it? Thanks
Downgradin seems loooooong. I jus hope shells, includin this one continue to develop and finally get working on at least 2.00. I'm staying at 2.00 for now anyways..
Ranmax09 I can fully confirm that the USB driver included does not work with xp64, But on the other hand, I think that the inf file does just need to be modified a little for it to work, I'm busy at the moment, But I will try to fix it before 2morrow, If anyone else hasn't done it before
This is a very nice piece and it is great to be able to stream music and movies from my hard drive through wifi, but I cannot seem to get it to connect through the usb. I always get "Error: Can't connect to USB Host" yes, usbhostfs.exe is running on my computer and yes I have installed the drivers, but I still get that message on my psp. That problem aside this is great.
To #55 Man just find a tutorial on the 2.0 downgrader and read up a little about Devhook. You have no idea what yer missing mate.
Thanks for you quick reply Arlac :) If it doesn't work i'll just use my sisters computer because she has 32 bit :P

Thanx for the tips. I deleted all the sce's and used a utility to send all my corrupt files at the bottom. i noticed that there are some ways u can name a file e.g UMDE1~1% and UMDE 1 , that hides the corrupt file and also the file can be seen in irshell.
dammit my psp crashes whenever i try to save config settings. So i can't change skin or config anything. A little help?
make sure u r pressing circle instead of x, otherwise u should reinstall all of the files. cause u might be missing something.
I am able to stream daxiso loader through my computer but is there a way for it to read off of the ISO folder on my computer?
AMAZING ! I really like that shortcuts way of going around instead of point and click. nice additions would be the possibility to pan with the stick when viewing pictures and a way to read .txt files.
i tried both usb and wifi but it doesn't work. i think the problem of my wifi is that the port for it is probably blocked. anybody know what port nethost uses?
i read tutorials, have a router, can connect to the internet with psp via router, but irshel wont connect to wifi. also have wifi on laptop. how do i config windoze?
so i got the usb host working and managed to launch a mp3 from my computer's hard drive, only problem is it stops playing after about 20 seconds and then wont start up any more mp3s untill a restart... anyone else having the same problem?
Oh my god! My prayers have been answered!! I was just playing some ISOs through DAXZISO the other day through USB... it has the future promise about wifi included also... so then I was just wondering it it would be able to run any sort of file from the XMB and all that. Like that would be the ultimate adition to a PSP. NOW NO MORE SPACE LIMITATIONS!!!! Now it not only supports USB but wifi as well this has got to be heaven man! And all you need to keep your portability is an internet connection without any type of firewall!!! This is just awesomeeeeee... at least I hope it supports internet access, since theoreticaly its completely possible. Anyway I can never thanx enough the great Ahman for the amazing work over the past months on this incredible shell... if it was already the best shell available... now it has gone through the roof and away! Again congratulations Ahman!!!! AMAZING WORK!!! I dont know if theres anything left to do with this shell... but keep it up!!!! AVMexican... Proud Mexican and a 1.5 proud user!!! Prouder everyday!!!!
I had the same dilemma, I had everything in the proper drawers and everything was set up and it wouldnt connect... HERES WHAT YOU DO: 1. open the nethostfs.exe, and leave it open. Or minimize it if you really feel the need. 2. Run irshell and enter the configurator. Set your IP address to whatever your comp says your IP is when you go to Start/RUN, type "command" (without quotes) and then in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com window where it says C:\DOCUME`1\OWNER> type in "ipconfig /all" (again without quotes). here it will tell you what IP to put into the configurator. save settings and return to iRshell. 3. NOW, and this is where I got stuck, and probably you too. Enter, iRshell, and hold down LEFT TRIGGER+ ANALOG DOWN. this activates the network connection. Then hold down LEFT TRIGGER+ANALOG RIGHT. this makes your drive MS0. it should work if you set it up correctly. I made a little duplicate of my MS structure in some drawer with MP_ROOT and it works for me now that I know to use the proper button inputs to get it running once its set up... Hope this helps because this app rocks
Now THIS is some homebrew! Everyone involved in this should be beaming with pure pride.
first n65, then devhook now unlimited memory *****....
how do i open the configurator?
is there going to be a mac ver. of this?
can someone tell me how to get the usb to work, all I get is Error: can't connect to usb host
Hey im just wondering.....when using the mp3 playback feature how do you make it play all the songs in the folder. It only plays one song and then stops it, I have to go and change it to the next song The option might be somewhere but this is my first time using irshell :)
hentai rulez!
u can press circle on the songs that u like and then press r+x then it will play ur playlist, but they all have to be in the same folder
i got nethost and everyting else to work fine but how do you access the cd or dvd drives.cant figure it out
can someone please explain how do i stream isos cause i have some backed up but my friend and i want to play 2 player and he only has the 32mb card so can someone just exolain i get this to work and everything so i dont need help there i get the loader to open but it still reads from the ms. please help
this is so damn frustrating i dont get it i feel like a noob and i want to kill myself
First i play my backedup games through usb and dump them via wifi with dax, and now the most asome homebrew i have ever known now let's me play my homebrew through wifi and usb, dude i just...im just speachless what did we mortals do to deserve this much goodness. If there is anything we can do to return the favor just let us know and i'll be first in line man cuz you rock man!
It's nice to read comments from people that are helping each other out, keep it up! :)
This as to be the best shell ever!! I lile ArtilleryShell but this is WAY better!!! Good job on this on AhMan and the whole team who worked on this great piece of Homebrew!!!
this is the program i have been waiting for, theoretically you could use an externally powered hd with usb, this program would be ace if you could stream from anywhere in the world via wifi possibly by having another program that looks for and connects to your computer, spectacular work!
I get everything to work, wifi connection to computer and so on. But when it comes to starting the iso files from the computer it doesnt seem to work. What shall I do?
the readme doesnt clearly explain the functions and installation of this, seriously I cant get my isos to run with devhook either (using usbhost, redirect to ms0). it keeps looking for UMDEMULATOR/ISO, which makes completely no sense
Awesome program, great work, and thanks for such an astronomical contribution to the psp scene. However, I was unable to get the usb host or wifi nethost to work. I followed all instructions and I can access all the files, but running ISOs over wifi or usb doesn't work, and neither does using the xmb to play videos, music, games, or photos. I did manage to get my psp settings reset once, also. This was the reason I downloaded this program, so I won't be using it until I can get that to work, since I don't use shells (if I could get them to start at boot it would be a possibility). Thanks for everything, but get the remote file systems working and I'll start using it.
I'm having quite a few problems with IRSHELL....everything is setup its jus that when i launch the XMB it does not detect the .MP4 and MP3s...it picks up the photos though o_0? and my Mp3s stop playing after 20 seconds jus like #68 said....Does any 1 know a fix around this???
Ok, can anybody find a way to run iso's with this? I've tried everything and could not get them to run at all. If anyone has done this or has found a way to, please let me know.
i cant get isos working, and i havnt tried mp4's but pmp movie files work and it doesnt lag unless ur doingg something on ur pc while watching something then it will lag a little. but i would really like to learn how to get isos working through either wifi or usb cause it keeps trying to find them on my ms
I can get homebrew running off my PC by creating all the /psp/game folders etc where I install the USBhosts file. But when I run DAXZISO it still only reads the ISO folder off my memory stick and not the one off my PC even though I have an ISO folder there!!!!! Has anybody got irShell to run ISO's off the PC with USB?
we can all use daxiso to run isos through usb. i would really like to get it to work through wifi so i can play it anywhere in my house.
How did you get daxiso to work with USB in irshell then?
is it possible to connect to your computer from another router or location?
Hello Mac fans! usbhostfs and nethostfs enabled for MacOSX!!!!! You can download nethostfs and usbhostfs for MacOSX from: usbhostfs - http://wattks.uw.hu/Mac/programok/usbhostfs_MAC.zip nethostfs - http://wattks.uw.hu/Mac/programok/nethostfs_MAC.zip Enjoy it!
any of u have a prob when you put the nethostfx.exe in a root drive, lets say C: or D: and it connects but on your psp you dont see any folders? i have to put that file in every folder i have in my root drive to see the contents of the folder, which i dont want because im going ot have a million nethost windows! someone help me out! thanks
Well , great program , i got the usb working , but i couldnt get the wi fi working which i realy want working, even after following the direction to the exact.Im using a toshiba laptop with built in wifi connecting to a belkin router , do i need to do anything special for this to work or it just wont.
I installed IRShell on my PSP 1.5, and made sure the "SKINS" directory was placed under PSP\GAME\IRSHELL I ran IRShell, then ran the Configurator (R+Start), and selected the Skin Browser... it's empty Am I missing something? Or do I have to switch the skins manually by copying their files into the main IRSHELL directory?
sorry, missed the part of the README that mentioned the IRSHELL directory in the zip file was supposed to go into the memory stick's root directory... which is confusing...
does anybody else find it impossilbe to stream mp3s over wifi, theres just so much lag. with pimpstream it works perfectly but with this the lag is too much, any tips
ok after pissing about for ages i think ive found out how to stop the lag, if you put the nethostfs file in a folder with loads of mp3s(1000 or so) then it lags a lot, but if you put it in a folder with much less mp3s, then the stream is perfect. hopefully in the next version they will sort this out as pimpstream is flawless with 1000mp3s or more, this one cant handle so many!
I saw a device that lets u connect two usb devices with out a computer. U could use this with some kind of computer external hardrive or usb stick to make a sort of portable hard drive for your psp. Imagine the possibilities > u could sit down, plug your psp into the external hardrive with that device i mentioned and u could be watching movies from ur 200GB HARDRIVE!!!!!
