PSP: secret video repository - Image 1For those who like to keep their top secret video files with them at all times, well, you can now carry them around in your PSP without worrying about your content being viewed by unauthorized eyes. And no, we're not referring to the downloaded porn videos that you don't want your little brother to see. It could be that music video that you've been prepping up for its international debut on YouTube, or it can be a video which shows your super top secret homebrew app that would put veteran coders to shame. Now, if you don't want anyone stealing your ideas, then take pj1115's advice and start using this little app called HideMov Beta.

As the name implies, it's an app that means to keep your video clips safe from prying eyes. This means that even if you passed your PSP around the whole office (because everyone just wants to have a go at Loco Roco...), they wouldn't be able to snoop on your vids... unless, of course, they know the key combination that you set which unlocks your whole stash.

According to the app's maker, HideMov is meant to work with Dark_AleX's OE firmwares. When launched with the XMB, it basically stops the PSP's video menu from detecting any files until the correct combination of keys is pressed. Until then, it will simply keep displaying the message "There are no videos". On top of that, you can even re-disable the videos with a second button combination.

Weighing in at a featherweight 3.58KB, you might want to give this app a try.

Now, just remember folks: as with any piece of homebrew, ALWAYS READ THE README FILE BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING. Once you've gone through pj1115's notes, then go ahead and have fun.

Cool...

This actually looks like a pretty good add on. Thanks!
by - 2007-02-23 14:54:37
first post

yooo hooo first post !!!!! great app
by zacharya1990 - 2007-02-23 14:55:12
HUMM...

Wow thats cool. I wonder if this could be used with other things like, Pictures, Music, and games. It would make me feel alot safer if this could be set with specific eboots, mainly any FLASHER, or UPDATE, to prevent snoopy people from bricking or updating my psp.
by - 2007-02-23 14:58:17
shall I point it out?

hold R at boot, disable plugin, watch pron....
by - 2007-02-23 15:02:35
tried it?

guys have anyone tried the app yet?
by - 2007-02-23 15:28:30
@Dave Obvious

Most people(unless serious homebrew people) don't really know about the Recovery menu, even some people on pspupdates probably don't know about it.
by - 2007-02-23 15:29:43
Excellent

Sounds great, this app has many possibilities especially if it was able to write to flash then it would be pointless to steal a PSP with this on it! Still I am going to wait untill its not a beta and also it has more functions to it.
by - 2007-02-23 15:35:12
doesn't work

hey this thing is not working for me, wen i turn on my psp its all black(a brick?) but wen i disable it the psp works again help? ps im useing 3.03OE-C
by - 2007-02-23 15:35:32
doesn't work

I dunno, but for me it doesn't work. Enabled the plugin and all. Maybe it's only for the MP_ROOT folder, because all my videos are in VIDEO
by - 2007-02-23 15:37:58
HideMov v2

HideMov v2 on its way, folks. It's turning into a complete media privatization facility! It will soon be able to hide music, photos, video, bookmarks and even certain folders in GAME. Keep sharp.
by - 2007-02-23 15:40:04
New Folders

It doesn't hide the videos from the folder VIDEO in the Root of the memory stick. It only hides the videos in MP_ROOT.
by - 2007-02-23 15:40:34
thanks

thank you pj, you rock.
by - 2007-02-23 15:40:41
sssssss

IF you want to hide you "videos" just just use fileassistant or something or pspfiler and name the extension something different so say it was.... blahblah.mp4 just add blahblah.mp41 and it wont show on the video section done
by - 2007-02-23 15:44:32
ummm

uuhhhhhh duh. quite obvious isn't it? what does that have to do with this plugin? doing what you just told me will completely ignore all the videos... So you want me to 1st startup FileAssistant, rename the videos, go back to the XMB, watch it, and when I'm dong watching, go back to FileAssistant, and rename the videos?
by - 2007-02-23 15:44:40
dunno

if i could hide games it would be interesting. i don't know about the rest of you but i don't have room on my ms to have videos or pics. only games. i'll leave vids and pics on my phone where i know it's better protected.
by - 2007-02-23 15:47:13
ummm

ya what would be the point of renaming the file everytime you want to watch it? or hide it? in that case i don't even need fileassistant or anything i can use windows to do that. but then they might as well go on the computer. cause i need my computer to watch them...
by - 2007-02-23 15:58:18
Hmm...

Well, I've had an idea. Right now, my module is only capable of hiding the files in MP_ROOT, and it does so by messing with some filenames. What I'm thinking is (the more secure way), that instead of messing with the memory stick, a single file in the flash has a '1' added onto the end, so as to make it completely secure. Yes, it's more secure, but it writes to the flash, which I'm not sure will go down well. (I have experience with flash writing, so don't worry). What do you guys think?
by - 2007-02-23 16:05:55
bleh

It's just that I'm not entirely comfortable with coding something that would write to the flash so freely and frequently. And also it may get baaad reactions.
by - 2007-02-23 16:07:45
cool but

A MUCH easier way of doing this is opening an app that can change folder names and just take the last letter or number off the folder that contains the videos. The PSP won't read them til it's properly spelled. So like you can have 100MNV01 with music videos and 100MNV02 with porn... just rename it to 100MNV0 and it will only show the music videos until you add the 2 again. :) So you don't have to disable all the videos.
by - 2007-02-23 16:21:30
Umm

Not sure how effective that would be. Iw would mean the user re-organising their videos completely, and it's just too much effort. Besides, I'm not aiming this app toward hiding porn, that's just immorale and childish. What does everyone think about the flash idea? If not, I'll just expand the renaming to the VIDEO, PHOTO, MUSIC, GAME, bookmarks etc. The only problem is after the key-combi is pressed, it would take 3 or 4 seconds before everything is written.
by - 2007-02-23 16:32:36
whoa

need a a hide game. or browser
by - 2007-02-23 16:34:36
ehh

The porn thing was just a figure of speech. I meant whatever you want to be hidden. You could have the key combo rename the directories or something.
by - 2007-02-23 16:34:56
.

Well technically it wouldn't be "HideMov" then. If it hide all that stuff I think it needs a new name.
by PSProdigy - 2007-02-23 17:31:54
Hmm...

I wonder how many of these "pj1115"s are actually posted by pj1115...
by - 2007-02-23 17:35:10
I agree

I did not really post any of this, it was all people attempting to imitate me... Or was it? (Makes you think)
by - 2007-02-23 17:56:29
...

seriously though, if your the author of this app, make an account so people dont impersonate you, and only post under that username. I just dont register because im lazy.
by - 2007-02-23 18:12:58
Black screen?

Anyone else get a black screen when you load up this plugin?
by - 2007-02-23 18:17:06
hmm

good little tweak, although the guy with the black screen, it happened because you copied & pasted the "module.prx", probably. Or, boot up psp without the memcard in it, than put it in. the plugin will already be enabled.
by - 2007-02-23 18:23:27
??

this is not working for me it makes me sad....take a look at this http://cgi.ebay.com/Abraham-Lincoln-Potato-Chip-MINT-CONDITION-collectors_W0QQitemZ300084507055QQihZ020QQcategoryZ33774QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
by - 2007-02-23 18:25:46
yeah...

same here.everything the same. 3.03 OE-C. (im not a noob so i know its not my fault) u think its only meant for 3.10 OE? its either that or he is new to the prx coding and didnt test it before he released it. hence the name "beta"
by - 2007-02-23 18:35:47
pssshhh

yeah right, "it was all people attempting to imitate me" like a dev would say that. (i know its a fake) but he is talking for real. i have experience with coding, just not as well as the real devs are but im getting there. anyway he is for real. it will slow down b/c of accessing the mem in different location while writing.
by - 2007-02-23 18:43:15
..

try this one: rename the folder they are in..
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-23 18:46:56
Nice job.

The author did a nice job. I wish it would hide videos in the "Video" folder of the root though.
by - 2007-02-23 19:25:33
yeah

All the person has to do is get your psp and connect it via usb to a computer to view any of your files. This little plug-in/app is only beneficial if people aren't connecting your PSP to a computer.
by - 2007-02-23 19:49:26
Nice App...

Yeah, this thing is really nice, all you gotta do is make it able to hide everything you put on your PSP...then this would be an EXTREMELY useful app, such as hiding flash agent, cintro stuff, and others as such...and as well, there are a few bugs i have noticed...first of all, i cant go into recovery while in XMB anymore with this on, second of all, the PSP doesnt boot properly from startup, and ive never been able to go to XMB from recovery...just some ideas for you...
by - 2007-02-23 20:46:01
fdsaf

yea shut up retard
by - 2007-02-23 21:00:32
isnt it obvisouly...

..for pr0n?
by - 2007-02-23 21:31:56
what

the Heck does that have to do with anything?
by - 2007-02-23 21:33:24
cant get it 2 work

im having the same problem as some of the others i read up above...... i enable the plugin then my psp wont even bring anything up.....i thought it was bricked for a few till i just disabled the plugin and everything works fine again...??? how do i get this working??? i added the line in vsh.txt and everything??
by - 2007-02-23 21:37:41
Could cintro's effect the boot up?

it doesn't work for me..maybe it's because I have a cintro?
by - 2007-02-23 21:48:20
...

you could just make the folders hidden, im sure the typical user doesnt know how to go to folder options, view, show hidden files or you could pass protect them although im not surfe if the psp could read it then or not hmm
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-23 21:50:48
Doesn't seem to work at all.

At first I said that it didnt work for the "video" folder in the root. Well it doesnt seem to work at all. i'm confused. is this a fake?
by - 2007-02-23 21:52:14
uhh

also could you make it hide the dcim folder because i have some well lets just say my dad would kill me if he found them yea that would be great
by - 2007-02-23 21:54:28
cant be a fake...

If it's on the front page. I'm sure the QJ staff tried it themselves.
by - 2007-02-23 22:46:28
good

this is a great idea. now my gf can play my psp with seeing something she's not supposed to see (ie. extremely hardcore fisting).
by scythe - 2007-02-23 23:13:22
lol

lol, what a retard.
by - 2007-02-23 23:46:34
prx's are flawed

idk about most of you, but prx's dont always load on startup. its nothing im doing wrong, i know that, its just that sometimes they dont load and that would mean, all videos show up now wouldnt it? id rather save em in a hidden location far from the root folder, to somewhere else and use irshell and a plugin to watch my vids, that way i need not convert them.
by - 2007-02-24 01:12:13
kljio

Darn...dont work on 3.03 OE-C...tested on 3.10 OE-A' and works fine...
by - 2007-02-24 02:38:21
same thing happened

but then i tried it again and it worked... great app *locks away porno*
by - 2007-02-24 03:36:19
wrong

once video directory locked, you can not watch your porn on your psp even if you disable it. unlock first and watch
by pj1115 - 2007-02-24 04:19:47
Hmm

It would appear that it requires 3.10 OE-A or later to work. I'll look into it. Oh, and all of pj1115's comments except that idiot who talked about people imitating me are me. Sorry for the confusion. It's not a fake. I've got people saying it works, and I can make a video later if required. As I said, in the next release it'll hide video, music, photo, and certain games (if not all). Still no feedback on the flash idea...
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-24 05:51:10
Huh

Did you actually get videos to be hidden? I loaded it, have it enabled, etc but when i get to XMB the video are all shown.
by - 2007-02-24 07:34:27
nah

Man, do NOT write to flash like every time you start your PSP. Patch the path it looks for the videos in memory, that's MUCH safer. Like ms0 to ms1 or something :P
by - 2007-02-24 07:38:15
Hmmm

@Cobra: Try pressing [Home]+[R]. Remember that the PSP cache's the videos, so if you've viewed them once, you need to clear the cache before you view them again. Go to another memory stick area such as photo or game and try video again. I've also noticed a bug where the PSP creates a folder called MP_ROOT, and it makes it impossible to rename the original. Will be sorted.
by - 2007-02-24 09:56:32
thing

nothing it is just strange
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-24 10:51:11
Nope

still doesn't work. I have re-installed it countless times. I'm using the latest OE version (3.10 A2) and have had .prx's running in the past. I have re-enable and disabled it in recovery countless times, it still doesnt work. What folder does this exactly hide?
by - 2007-02-24 11:03:42
EW

Dirty boy, I hope your girlfriend somehow finds it, mwahahahahahah
by - 2007-02-24 11:05:12
MP_ROOT

It renames MP_ROOT...
by - 2007-02-24 11:35:06
re

id love to try it, but i use pmp mod instead...
by PSPZorZ - 2007-02-24 12:40:23
f

It's called "Hidemov" because, to make the PSP not see videos, it "moves" videos to an MP_R00T folder (with zeros instead of o's). It doesn't stand for movie...
by - 2007-02-24 12:53:21
y not

I wish somebody would make one of these for homebrew app., because I don't feel safe handing my PSP over to an eight year old just so he can flash a million things and f it all up.
by PSPZorZ - 2007-02-24 12:53:39
f

One cool thing you can do is go to the video folder so it shows your videos, then hide the videos (Home + R) while in there, now the videos show up, but if you try to play them it won't let you (at least until you clear the psp's cache). I don't have much use for this, as it isn't compatible with the mp3 plugins (having both enabled won't let psp boot) but I may start using this if you extend it for all media (music/photo), let the VIDEO folder work with it, and allow only certain folders to not show up... so I could have a folder of movies and a folder a photos and a folder of music all designated to not show up when activated... also, make it so you can customize the buttons you press.
by - 2007-02-24 13:29:47
Right

Well, here's what I'm adding: - Video, photo, music, game, savedata, bookmark hiding. - Changing key combos - incompatbile with another plugin. - Try to increase firmware compatibility (no promises). - Perhaps patch the memory instead. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that, so if anyone is willing to help, please give me a buzz: piers.jones@gmail.com.
by - 2007-02-24 16:27:04
small problem

So I gave it a try on 3.03 OE-C and it worked. However there is a bit of a glitch. I'm not sure what exactly I did to trigger it but these are the events that took place before I became aware of the glitch. I hid the videos (worked). Went to sleep mode. Came out of sleep mode. Added a video to the VIDEO folder. Noticed that this video was not hidden (then came here and found out it doesn't work with that folder) I unlocked the videos (emptied cache), nothing happened Tried several more times, no effect. So I turned off the psp and disabled the plug in and the videos were still gone. Eventually I looked through the ms and noticed there was a folder name MP_R00T (notice the zeros and not O's) Thats were my vids went, and I just moved them and everything went good from there. So if the dev is watching this comment space then there's a small heads up.
by - 2007-02-24 16:45:00
oh nvm

Oh it seems you were aware of that bug already. woops.
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-24 18:11:03
I don't see how you guys got this to work....

I don't know what is up, but I have a PSP i got on release (not TA082 or anything) and it does not work! The only "mods" i have is a custom 1-12.bmp image file and I also have 1.00 bogus sounds...thats it.
by CoBrA2168 - 2007-02-24 18:24:29
Well i finally got it to work

I can get this to work as long as it is not in the SEplugins folder. If i put this anywhere else, it will work. Nice work btw.
by - 2007-02-24 20:49:10
asd

3.03oe-c

just tested it in 3.03 oe-c and it works fine.
by - 2007-02-25 06:12:25
damnit

can somebody please help me? I did all of the steps it tells you to but when i go into that file recovery thingy with the blue screen, and I go to plugins nothing is in the folder. Help cause I'm a little bit of a noob, by about 50%
by - 2007-02-25 13:51:36
this was cool at first

this was a cool app but when i enable it my apps dont work such as irshell and emulators in the GAME folder (they just turn off the psp) and my changed Network update fnc to Recovery Menu doesnt work when this plugin is enabled once its disabled everything works fine again please fix these probs so i dont have to turn it on and off
by - 2007-02-25 14:29:37
Grr

This is frustrating me: I've never had any problems with this. Never a black screen, never a locking-up PSP, never a failed game launch, nothing. So what the heck is different on all of your PSP's? Sigh... No-one has helped me with memory patching, so v2 still has folder renaming... Sit tight.
