Harleyg from our forums has updated his Custom Firmware Patch to v0.2 today. Harleyg's Custom Firmware Patch was initially released yesterday among a whole host of other custom firmwares, but Harleyg didn't stop there. Version 0.2 of this great custom firmware adds many more features, and you wouldn't believe what Harleyg has done all in just one day! Here's a list of the features:

Configuration and recovery mode
  • New style and menu/sub menus
  • Clockspeed configuration
  • USB mode
  • Update vshmain.prx and recovery.elf
  • Remove patch
  • Launch update eboot
  • Replace index.dat
Other
  • No kxploit (Can run 1.0 formatted eboots)
  • No annoying corrupt icons
  • No intro
Controls (while booting):
  • WLAN switch down: Loads DevHook
  • WLAN switch up: Loads XMB
  • HOLD on: Loads configuration and recovery mode
  • X: Launches autoboot eboot
As you can see, the feature list is amazing. You have the best of every firmware: you can pretty much 'dual boot' into 2.7 by loading up DevHook with the WLAN switch, hide 1.5 corrupt icons and load 1.0 eboots! It's as if firmwares 2.71, 1.5 and 1.0 have all been put in a melting pot to make a magical firmware! Recovery.elf file and vshmain.prx are included in the download.

Credit also goes to Dark_Alex for this, as Harleyg's Custom firmware is a modification of Dark_Alex's original Custom Firmware Proof of Concept for the PSP. Thanks for the tip cooldocy795!

Cool.

Nice. harleyg's older patch was kind of like Undiluted Platinum. This new one though, is very original except that it was tried before.

to hell with comments

Seriously, why does pspupdates allow comments? Maybe 1/20 posts are actually contributing something, and the others are just spam/garbage posts. Please just disable comments!

TA-082?

Sorry if I'm out of place but is there any chance of sticking this on a TA-082? So that I don't keep asking random TA-082 questions is there an updated FAQ of what works and what doesn't on TA-082s?
by - 2006-07-17 21:06:22
Ayh,

In the description, it refers to a "New style and menu/sub menus". Does this mean it adds new menu's (ie: replacing Sony's GUI?) or does that apply to something else?
by - 2006-07-17 21:06:27
Boot without memory stick

what will happen if i boot without my memory stick being in my psp, im too afraid to try this myself in fear of bricking my psp, i would just like to know what will happen

Does that mean once you turn it on, press hold... or continue holding the power button up ?

by - 2006-07-17 21:40:27
works

just tested on my psp, works like a charm. devhook mode doesnt actually load devhook menu but bumps u into the last emulated firmware, which is cool. to 29, u power on and immediately put it in hold to access the menu, which is redesigned, not the xmb. very useful and took about 2 seconds to install, it doesnt hurt, i promise.....
by CarXCrashXHearts - 2006-07-17 21:45:01
Hey uh...

I don't see anything that warns people about this being able to brick their PSPs...
by - 2006-07-17 21:48:02
works

also, it is easily reversible, just boot into the recovery mode and it can be removed. good times.

Doesn't work...

This doesn't work for me. I have 1.0, and have the files in the GAME and SYSTEM folders. When I go to start the eboot, it just says that it cannot be started. :(
by - 2006-07-17 23:15:20
well...

I kinda liked the "hold L Hold R button... next release should include that, also we should "hold Triangle to boot eboot", cuz i wont remember to switch my wlan switch one day and ... bam... i accidently boot into 2.7, Please use the hold button style, really dont like to switch wlan too much, they werent designed to be switched as much as the buttons, so please consider wisely, also the modchip professionals chose the "hold L button" option also, they might even have their reasons, it used to be cool cuz i used to pretend i had the modchip ... now i cant.. thanks if you switch it back also #10 yeah your right.. i think it was an option that someone worked on psix used.... some guy that tried to boot psix instead of the psp xmb by turning on the wlan.... i really thought that kinda stupid... wlan is for wlan, use the shoulder buttons look more professional
by - 2006-07-17 23:16:36
So

How do you replace sony's gui??
by - 2006-07-17 23:17:04
use ur head

@44-u have to have 1.5 in order to get the custom FW. it won't work on 1.0. Because there is a 1.5->1.0 downgrader out, I would suggest just upgrading for now @45-no, it didn't. u can only brick a single psp one time. there is no way to brick it a second time. and besides, u probably haven't even tried the custom FW yet. i can't get the "press x" thing to work. i edited the config.txt file to open what i would want, and the eboot didn't start up like it said.
by TracerTong - 2006-07-17 23:17:10
keep 'em coming....

Well done Harleyg.... Works a treat!
by - 2006-07-17 23:18:23
FW

It dose not work on 1.0 only 1.5 How did it brick your psp 2 times if it was bricked one time?
by - 2006-07-17 23:27:33
Switch WLan?

Well I like the shoulder buttons better but if any could you switch it so that when you have the WLan down it boots 1.5 and when it is up it boots 2.71 that way I wouldnt always have to switch it up when I boot to load homebrew.
by - 2006-07-17 23:33:04
Okay.

I thought the whole point of downgrading to 1.0 was to use custom firmware... >.< But thanks, i'll get right on that upgrade.
by senjutsu - 2006-07-17 23:39:13
deja vu!

stupid use of the lan switch... and anyway this is old stuff, I mean, I already have the last version so I already have : Configuration and recovery mode ( suppose I have it ) New style and menu/sub menus ( suppose I have it ) Clockspeed configuration ( already have it ) USB mode Update vshmain.prx and recovery.elf ( already have it ) No kxploit (Can run 1.0 formatted eboots) ( already have it ) No annoying corrupt icons ( already have it ) No intro ( already have it ) what's new? only the lan switch options ( and I don't like it, holding R is better I think ) ps: to the ones who said this brick psps: if you bricked your psp with this app you must really be stupid, only idiots could brick a psp with an easy program like that, you don't even have to do something!! AND THIS IS PERFECT, NO BRIKING!!!
by - 2006-07-17 23:39:59

Double Brick your PSP with Undiluted Platinum!

Anyway... I still haven't got an answer to this (I may have to try it myself): Can you load a custom firmware using DevHook to eliminate the need to flash your PSP? (Even if just for testing purposes) If it is possible, is there any detriment to developers when testing a custom firmware in DevHook?

Is it possible with 2.7???

Just an Idea, if devhook can secretly run on 2.7 then might be able to run 1.5 on 2.7 right? cuz the installation might be able to do without having to run homebrew on 2.7, right? Still i got 1.5

ok, i got the first version of this but only downloaded the devhook mod, not the recovery.elf, i didnt realy know what to do or how to install this, so i ran slashers remover, and now i dont have anything, so now, can i install this as a new user? and after, do i need to boot up recovery mode to install the vshmain.prx and recovery.elf because they are not in system in the new mod or the dev hook one i had at first, its all very confusing, can someone tell me what to do?

can someone make a tutorial (and perhaps a movie , i want to see how this firmware looks like), thx
by - 2006-07-18 06:33:26
'

on further more devoted examination i discovered the recovery.elf and other files in the eboot folder, sorry to cause alarm, i will look more into future problems before posting. the firmware is a brilliant combination of creativity and innovation, but i believe most of the credit should go to dark alex and not the modders, and as this is only a POC, i will no longer install any updates untill dark alex releases his first true version of the custom firmware which im sure will have all these features plus more, and i urdge people no to flash every thime there is an update as this may cause a problem with the flash, wait for dark alex to release the first version, and remember these are all just POC's, no matter how usefull they are. #89.

I dont appriciate your comment. I've been running 1.50 since in could downgrade from 2.0. I have completely custom coldboot sound (the "chum" and playstation from the PS1 commertials), POP gameboot, customized Eboots, devhook running 1.5-2.71 just to name a few. I have not been keeping up with the custom firmware scene, and i would just like a straight answer. Thanks, and have a nice day.

You can probably use custom firmware with devhook but...

thats basically pointless. You wont run homebrew through devhook, and recovery mode becomes pointless so your not taking advantage of anything custom fw offers. Just man up and install the bloody thing. It wont brick and if your lucky your testacles might descend. I said might

* ** *** **** ***** Not sure if anyone KNOWS this at all (didnt read any of the posts because you all practically repeat urselves...) but I went to change my MS ok? On my 1G I have all the roms and things I like to play yadda yadda, but on my 512MB I have some other things like WAB and stuff. I went to open WAB, when I realized that when I turned on my PSP.... it was normal.... Out of a surprise I put my 1G back in, restarted the PSP and it was fine! So meaning that if you wanted to play with version 1.0 eboot's... you need to copy the CF:COP to every MS since the MS holds the flashed data, or so it seems. ***** **** *** ** *

Problem

I can't get this to work. I install it, it says everything is fine, but when I reboot and I try to go directly to DevHook, it stays forever with black screen. I have to turn wlan switch on and it goes back to 1.5 saying that it fail to start. I uninstalled it using the recovery meny and everything goes well. But I try to install it again and always get the same result. Any ideas?

F$#$%*ing sweet!!!!!

This is just amazing work. I was worried about flashing but it should be fine. Worked out well for me. Just follow the instructions and everything will be ok. I love how I'm now able to quickly boot to anything. thanks Harleyq.

Blank screen as well - doesn't work on my 1.5 system

To #75: "how long does this thing take to finish. this has been going for 5 mins now and its just reading form my MS ( I am using devhook to customise my ms FW)" I had the same problem as you. I gave up waiting, then after trying to turn the system on, I got nothing but a blank screen. I thought the thing had been bricked, but I manged to boot it after removing and putting the battery back in. I was then able to get into the recovery mode to uninstall this garbage.

Do not use!

I made this work and had it for two weeks working perfectly but today i woke up, turned it on and blue screen saying "Setting Information is corrupted. Press the O button to repair and restore default settings". I press O and i just return to the same damn screen. Forget about trying to enter recovery mode because it just doesnt work when this happens. My advice is not to use this crap. Now i gotta go buy a new psp... thanks a lot harleyg...

My bad

Just been googling around to find out if there was a way to find out how to fix this apparent brick problem. If you find your PSP with a blank screen and constant flashing memory stick flashing you can actually recover it. By switching the WLAN switch up and before your psp starts up put it in hold. Follow thread here http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:5o916oD5KQIJ:forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/372819+Harleyg+custom+firmware+fix&hl=en&gl=uk&ct=clnk&cd=5&client=firefox-a

harleyg

When's the next version coming out, Harleyg? Hopefully, you can add the straight to DevHook XMB option. That would be awesome and all that I need!
