GuitarBox v1.52: Process music on the PSP

Joel Van's tutorial for an audio connector. You'll need one to get the most out of the app. - Image 1For the musically inclined members of the QJ community, here's something new for you to try out. Rocamatics created a guitar effects processor for the PSP. Called GuitarBox v1.52, it will process electronic sounds in real time and add specific effects to them as desired by the user.

According to Rocamatics' readme, GuitarBox v1.52 carries the following effects with it:
  • Noise Suppresor
  • Phaser
  • Distortion (overdrive type)
  • Delay
  • Equalizer (3-band)
Now, there's one important limitation to this app that you'll have to skirt past if you really want to use it. You'll need an electric instrument and an appropriate audio connector. Now, since you can't normally get those in retail (if you're using electric guitars, for example), you'll have to build one, which is done in some detail by Joel Van on this thread here. Otherwise, you could always use electronic microphones to do the deed.

In any case, why not try it out with a microphone first and see how well it does, then let us know what you think. Enjoy!

Hi Everybody!!!

I´m Rocamatics the developer of GuitarBox. The app´s MAIN purpose is to process an electric guitar signal (however, you can use a standard mic to test it!!!). Please, I need your feedback to improve the app!!

BTW, Im participating in the PSP-HACKS Homebrew Contest 2007.

Regards!.

This is great !! I've waited for this for long long time..

Gotta to try it tomorrow

Is this a port of some existing algorithm or you wrote it from scratch ?

Could you give more details about sampling frequency? How about the input/output latency ? Did you measured it exactly in ms ? Is it noticeable ?

Is there a way to implement backing tracks playback and process guitar input sound at the same time ?

Thanks

# really cool to see you pushing the hardwareGuest 2007-05-12 08:00
I also have been waiting ages for this sort of app.

I was wondering if you could work in a "tap tempo" feature for the delay. Maybe just double tap one of the shoulder triggers twice to the beat to set the delay time, that would make this way usable as a live effect.

Thanks for all the hard work.

# Rocamatics you will certain get my vote!Guest 2007-05-12 08:08
I like the idea of it! Even thought I have don't think I will use it for any serious recording since I got GR2 setup for recording as well as a Zoom9002 as a portable device . I still think this is a great idea! The part that you have to make your own cable is a bit of a hassle but it is do-able. However I just don't have the proper parts right now so I dont' know how it sounds like.... ;)

Keep up the good work!

So just ran your app and dude.... it's tight, nice GUI, does what it needs to do.

Latency is noticable, but still fully usable.

Well done Sir, you 'll have my vote.

# Is it worth my time?Guest 2007-05-12 09:21
I think it is kind of neat to have a fx box battery powered by the psp - very small and you can go anywhere you can fit your ax but I have one question...

Is it worth my time to try and make that connector to try this? Or is it still too early with the app and I should wait until there are later versions, etc.

I have all the pieces of hardware I think - so it wouldn't cost me anything.

Hi,

Thanks Guys!!

Some details in the CODING:

I use the PSPSDK, GNU Compiler and VS2005 as the IDE.

I've made some research and I found many algorithms for the effects, I analyzed them, and adapted for the PSP.

The sampling frequency is 44khz, the latency depends of how many effects are you sing at the same time... im still in the stage of optimizing the code. I cannot tell you the latency in MS.

It is possible to include a backing track.. however I need to optimize the effects first.

The next version will contain AT LEAST Chorus and a decent Tuner.

Regards.

# Cable without solderingrocamatics 2007-05-15 09:36
If you dont want to use soldering stuff you can still build the cable, just build a cable like the one in this photo http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8635/cnxxx4.jpg

you need eLoader (run guitarbox in eLoader) before running guitarbox on 6.xx fws
