Here's one homebrew application that could literally be music to your ears. theHobbit has just released Game Music Emu v0.1, a port of Shay Green's Game Music Emu library for the PSP (Shay Green, by the way, is also known as Blargg). Utilizing the Game_Music_Emu sound engine, the app supports the following formats:
  • Nintendo Game Boy (GBS)
  • Sega Master System/Genesis/MEga Drive/Mark III/BBC Micro (VGM/VGZ)
  • Sega Genesis (GYM)
  • Super Nintendo (SPC)
  • NES with VRC6, N106, and FME-7 sound (NSF)
As an added treat, theHobbit has added support for PSX (psf playback) using sexypsf port by yaneurao.

Game music-loving PSP owners who are raring to test the emulator should proceed with caution, as some soundtracks can make the program crash when zipped. This particularly applies to psf (portable sound format).  Another known bug is the 'Boost Volume' causing a distortion in older formats. And if you just hate random crashes, we suggest you skip the program, or wait for a more stable version. But I have to admit, this emulator looks promising.

Controls:

d-pad: Browse files
circle: Play file
square: Pause Playback
select: Return to browser
start : Cancel waveform
L R: Change song in  same folder/zip
up down: Volume Boost

Um no need to compare. I dont see how you can say this is better than devhook! This is great also, would be a better way to express your appreciation. This should be neat considering I have an app that lets me change all my music into gameboy, nes and snes files. Now I'll be able to have all my music in one tiny compressed package.

Great Job Mate!!!

This is awesome. I've been waiting for this a long time. I haven't put it in my PSP, by I know it'll be good. Do you think you could supply the makefiles etc. to make it easier to compile? I want to improve it.

this is definatly got to be one of the best homebrew programs yet, i've been wating to play snes music files for quite a while on the road, a lot less memory taken up and way better music than one could imagine :)

So, this program is visualizer for game music?, can i use it with mp3s?

It's not a visualiser... it plays video game music formats, like SPC and NSF. It does not work with MP3.

# Minipsf?Guest 2006-07-15 02:21
This piece of homebrew is great, i look foreward to it growing better in the coming releases... I have a lot of "minipsf" files, essentially playstation music, and i was wondering if they are supported by this current release? I have yet to try it, however if it does not work, i would really like to see it work in future releases.

# Psf2Guest 2006-07-15 02:33
Also, in addition to "minipsf", i'm sure "psf2" (Playstation 2 music) would also be a welcomed addition to the hopefully upcoming releases of thie videogame music homebrew...

So: MINIPSF & PSF2 & i guess SID would really be nice in the next releases.

*.usf sound format N64 music compatibility would be awesome in the next release. go to halleys comet software to download some and read specifications on the format. It's a bit like the PSF format. GSF (game boy advance music format) would be great too.

Dude, your awesome, finally don't have to use sens_9x TYL's buggy spc player.

And for anyone wondering, you can get these music files at

All it needs is the ability to play things in a row, and maybe playlists and a couple more formats and its pretty much done !

not only does this make me happy it makes me anticipate other releases on this with more support for other game music such as sid, cym, hes, gsf, usf, and psf/psf2 improvements.

hope most of the problems are worked out in later versions.
