Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1

You have to hand it to Fanjita and Noobz, they just keep coming up with stuff that make us all go nuts. While the Sony PlayStation Portable mainstream crowd is waiting for more announcements from official channels about the upcoming Skype features, Fanjita and Noobz went on ahead with the development of the homebrew alternative.

In the latest post from the Noobz home page, the homebrew devs pointed out the flaws of Sony's Skype-driven system to come. They listed quite a number of disadvantages, and said they decided to make their own phone-calling software for everyone to enjoy.

The new Fanjita and Noobz software is called "Furikup." They say it's derived from "geeky" jargon, so don't worry if it sounds dirty when you first hear or read it. In any case, these are the main features:
 • It's free software - in both the beer, and speech senses.
 • You can use it anywhere in the world, subject to signing-up to a suitable local SIP-based voice-over-IP provider and being near a usable wifi access point.  In many countries, you can find those for free or nearly-free - e.g. with SIPGate, in the UK, you can call to your PSP from any standard phone (landline or cellphone) for just the standard local call cost, and from PSP to another SIP phone (another PSP or a PC) for free.
 • It runs on both slim and fat PSPs.
 • It uses open standards, for maximum compatibility with other phone systems.
 • You can use a Go!Cam (Chotto Shot), Talkman microphone, or SOCOM-style headset for audio input.  (And even if you don't have any of those, you can still send audio from a WAV file in a pinch).
"It's still pretty much beta software - the audio quality needs some work (but it is usable), the UI isn't very pretty, and video calls aren't working (yet!)," notes the authors.

There's a lot more information in the readme file included in the archive, so don't forget to go through it. Enjoy!

Thanks to bobtentpeg for the tip!

what the

*****...how's this even possible?? They didn't even have anything to reverse engineer... So basically they made a Skype alternative from scratch. WHAT THE H.ELL. This is way insane.

SIP !+ skype

SIP is open and there are existing open source SIP VoIP clients available. For example, Ekiga Softphone available at http://ekiga.org/. This cannot be used to call Skype users unless they have a real phone number associated with their Skype account.

Great News

So much for Sony trying to get us PSP100x owners to upgrade to a 2000 series PSP. It's good to know someone still cares about us. Thank you very much Noobz/Fanjita. As always, you all are doing great things for the PSP scene. .A.J.

Works with landlines!

Hey All found a GREAT free SIP provider ... that allows FREE calls from your PC / PSP to land lines!! Wahoo!! In reading the "fine print" it will give you 300 minutes: _________ * Max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address. Unused free minutes cannot be taken to the following week(s). If limit is exceeded the normal rates apply. With your FREE DAYS you can call for free to all the destinations listed as free! when you have no FREE DAYS left the normal rates apply. You can get extra Freedays by buying credit _______ site is http://www.voipcheap.com sipcfg.ini files layout is like this: server=sip.VoipCheap.com username=xxxxxx password=xxxxxx stunserver=stun.voipbuster.com stunport=3478 input=file contacts file is like this: House,sip:1"area code""phonenumber"@sip.VoipCheap.com,mr,man no quotes and no spaces in the phone number it should be something like this 18885551212 at least for calls in the US not sure about outside of the US PSP is Custom FW 3.71 M33-2 Kernel set to 3.71 App placed in GAME folder WILL ALSO WORK if: Kernel set to 1.50 App placed in GAME371 folder I hope this helps you all! So far it's the only one I found that gives true free calls to landlines!! And I've been looking since this was released last night! :-) Oh yeah ... also if your press your "select" button on your PSP you will get "detailed" info when you place a call
by Bncplix - 2008-01-07 15:14:49
PC?

Using your way Dartan, how do you set up the contacts file to be able to call the pc?
by weapon33 - 2008-01-07 15:27:33
im using

sipphone.com, works in us psp - psp, psp -pc free, landline calls work fine, cost 1.9 cents/min in US, 2 cents in UK, audio quality on the landline end wasnt great, but it was usable. using chotto shot japanese.
by Dartan - 2008-01-07 16:07:39
to call a PC or PSP

to call a PC or psp you just need the information of the person you are calling... you would fill out the contact file like this: Echo Test,sip:17474743246@proxy01.sipphone.com,Echo,Test the numbers are the person you're trying to reach SIP account .... example is an account with sipphone
by Bncplix - 2008-01-07 17:07:57
Echo?

What if I was using voipcheap? I dont have a number, I have a username. I put my username so its name@sip.voipcheap~ and i was able to call my pc, but the psp continuously made wierd noises, i can accept on my pc but not hear anything on either end :/
by Dartan - 2008-01-07 18:39:35
try this

Bncplix - I think there is some issue with using your PC to call the PSP. but it seems like to call a PSP from a PSP you need to have the following in your contact file Dartan-pc,sip:dartan30@sip.VoipCheap.com,mr,man feel free to give it a call ... I'll be on for a while...

TO: Dartan

"Max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address. Unused free minutes cannot be taken to the following week(s). You can get extra Freedays by buying credit" I went to the site and find it confusing the "no FREE DAYs left". Does that mean their sevice is a "trial"? since it say to buy credit or else I'll pay 0.015 cent if I make call in USA after freeday end. Or is it really "forever free" if I obey the 300 minute perweek. Please reply thank you. -Victor
by Dartan - 2008-01-09 17:57:57
working for me

Victor - The free is still working for me. I have not set-up an account with a credit card ... so to the best of my knowledge the free offer still stands
by victor_raymond - 2008-01-09 23:26:47
Thanks for replying

Through many googling/surfing.. I find that www.voipbuster.com along with many similar/exact site like voipcheap.com. Have the same plan. I registered on voiceipbuster. They say something 60 minute total max free for FREE-account. I haven't used up yet..but I wonder if Voipcheap "really" let you have 300 minutes. Not to mention i dont' think they tell you how many freeday you have since...you didn't use creditcard to buy anything. Oh btw, I read alot of bad (customer support or not even at all) review on all these "similar" freecall....such as voipbuster, voipstunt, voipcheap etc.. So word of advice do not pay them anything. I would probably just going to make like many accounts and get them free minutes. Also, if you ever can use 300 minutes without paying from voipcheap, reply :) so I can join :p Take care. -Victor
