Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1We're happy to announce that homebrew developer Dark AleX has released the latest custom firmware for the PlayStation Portable with CFW 3.90 M33. This new build fixes yet another bug connected to the March33 NO UMD.

Here's the specifics on the update taken from the Readme:
  • March33 NO UMD: fixed (yet another) bug related with exiting with home. (infinite semaphore wait)
The developer also noted the changes in the auto-updater function that was included in the previous version of CFW 3.80. He's noted some instability with the latest version of the updater. Should this happen, Dark AleX mentions that you should restart the installer and try again.

In any case, here's the list of changes to the updater:
  • The degeneration check and correction of IDS keys happens too in 3.71 now.
  • Added code to download 3.90 PBP from net via wifi. Note that his code is not yet 100% stable, it may crash when selecting AP. In that case, reinit the installer.
  • L+triangle has been restored as method to bypass battery. If you already have 390.PBP keep those buttons pressed until you see "Veryfing 390.PBP". If the 390.PBP is being downloaded bia wifi, press those buttons at the end of download until you see the previous sentence.
We strongly advise you to take a look at the Readme.txt file for more details on how to install the latest custom firmware on your PSP handheld. Please note that this requires your PSP to have CFW 3.52 M33-3 or higher already installed before updating.

Thanks to EXETER, Ari Bornstein, TheDragon, and all the other tipsters for the heads up!

*Update* This just in: Dark AleX updated his site with the release of the 1.50 kernel addon for the PlayStation Portable Fat. For those of you who aren't familiar with this program, the 1.50 kernel addon allows users to launch homebrew which have not been updated.

Please be advised that this new update only works for the newly released CFW 3.90 M33. In any case, here are the instructions on how to install the addon to your PSP running on CFW 3.90 M33:
  • Copy 150k_addon to /PSP/GAME
  • Get sony 1.50 update and copy it to the root with name “150.PBP”
  • Run the program and done.

**UPDATE 2**
Dark AleX has updated his site again, releasing version 2 of the 1.50 kernel addon for the Sony PlayStation Portable Fat. This update currently works with your PSPs with CFW 3.90 M33. Here's the changelog for Dark AleX' 1.50 kernel addon version 2:
  • TA086: when being in 4th brightness level and recovering from sleep mode, the display was black. Fixed.
  • Added support in the 1.50 kernel for memory sticks greater than 4 GB. (I finally got my 8GB card! :D) Before, only the first 4 GB portion was recognized by the 1.5 kernel. Now, the theroetical limit is 4GB*512 = 2 Terabytes. ("only" 1 TB, if sony were using signed variables).
To install this update, just copy to /PSP/GAME and then run. Enjoy!

Thanks to Ari Bornstein for the tip!

80020001?

Every time I try to install this, I get "The game could not be started. (80020001) Can anybody help me? I had to downgrade via Pandora's Battery. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'm at 1.50 right now.

Poploader?

Does it still work with this version?
by Defektedtoy - 2008-01-31 15:51:21
wtf

is the readme supposed to say "- Get the 3.80 sony update from somewhere, and put it in same folder, with name "390.PBP"." and not "get the 3.90 sony update..." instead of 3.8?
by Jonathanx7 - 2008-01-31 15:54:06
WTF?

why would it tell you to get the 3.80 update? you do realize this is 3.90m33 right?
by Jonathanx7 - 2008-01-31 15:55:06
umm...

idk much about themes but will 3.80m33 themes work on 3.90m33? cause i got this really awesome theme and if its not gonna work idk if im gonna update, yet.
by kevin1003 - 2008-01-31 15:56:05

by J0539h - 2008-01-31 15:57:10
You are the man DA!

I knew that Sony's OFW v3.90 was out, but boy, I was surprised to see that DA updated his CFW 'AND' even the Add-on so quickly. You deserve a great big thank you from alot of people, here's mine... THANK YOU!!
by dodswm - 2008-01-31 16:00:05
:)

Its definitely a type - it is the 3.90 eboot, not 3.80. Download from dark-alex.org and u will see an updated readme. 3.80 custom themes work fine on 3.90m33 :D
by dodswm - 2008-01-31 16:02:31
:P

a "typo", not a "type"..... :p
by A2theC - 2008-01-31 16:05:52
anyone?

after about 93% of the install it said "firmware update failed, contact customer service" I had to pandora it and now I"M on 3.71 again.....anyone else have this problem.....I put the 3.90 eboot on the memstick, instead of wifi downloading it. I'm gonna retry it and use the update feature this time cuz the installer I downloaded corrupted my firmware.
by Binary - 2008-01-31 16:06:23
for fat...

PlayStation 1 titles updated boring. too bad no skype hack or Go! Messenger. make us first people that grab the psp *****ed over.
by dreizbone - 2008-01-31 16:12:29
IS this version 100%

Can someone give an advice on this version if it is successfully installed at his PSP, does 3.80 eboot is really required according to the read me or the 3.90 eboot from sony? thanks
by J0539h - 2008-01-31 16:14:15

:(

nope
by PSPMAN90 - 2008-01-31 16:54:21
OMG! Guys what's is so new about this CFW for the PSP Phat Users...

I mean everybody notice that the main Function of this new FW is the Skype Comunication Tool for the PSP-2000 aka PSP SLIM, so what's the big Idea on updating your PSP phat?! Yeah it comes: 1. More troubles running PSone games, and some new games too 2. Plugins that work perfect on CFW 3.71m33-4 doesn't work now! 3. Actually have everything that the CFW 3.71M33 have, and if u want Free Radio Just use the PSP RADIO that have more AM/FM Chanels than that Free Radio for PSP, c'mon the same sh@$#t! 4.when someone gave me a really good chanelog of what this New CFW have and do that the CFW 3.71M33-4 do, Ill update to CFW3.90M33! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now SONY will have to release his new OFW 4.00, remember that odd rumor that this OFW 4.00 is going to have absolute Security for NO-CFW PSP... Yes I'm sure u remember! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Out this I hope Darkalian Man Dark Alex make the skype funcion for the Phat, port it in anyway, well more reliable way is make an homebrew or an plugin... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well anyways DA congrats for this new and fast release of the CFW 3.90m33, is oviously that it was easier to make it, since is really look's like the 3.80 so it wasn't a big bother as you show us, THANKS U DARKALIAN MAN! Thanks! CHeers UP! PSPMAN90
by FreePlay - 2008-01-31 17:09:07
Dear idiot

FreeRadio is CUSTOMIZABLE. The readme TELLS YOU HOW TO CUSTOMIZE IT. Don't like the channel selection? ADD YOUR OWN.
by Metal Jody - 2008-01-31 17:11:05
god***mn it.

Go!Messenger is out only for PSP-2000 TOO!! rrrrgh!
by Jonathanx7 - 2008-01-31 17:14:42
Dont update

if you have a fat, dont update. all it will do is take away your irshell, probably your theme, and i dont think you get anything new. if you have a slim get it IF!!! you dont have a cellphone and! have a lot of access to wireless internet. otherwise dont get this. for me(at least for now) its 3.90 M33=no irshell=no 3.90 M33 for me
by billylee8 - 2008-01-31 17:23:10
Ha ha

HA HA HA LOLOLOL :p LMAO ...lol
by A2theC - 2008-01-31 17:32:17
I agree

This firmware isn"t really for PHAT users....I have had no luck installing it either by using the files downloaded here, on DA's site or using the update feature, it crashes and turns off when i try to download the 3.90 firmware file after i get the update app via update feature and when I put my own 3.90 file in the folder I get t 92% and the flashing stops for no reason and gives me an error (FEEEEEE) or something of the sort telling me to contact service department.....I have had to save my psp via pandora 3 times today which i"ve never had to do. But its nice to know my pandora works! :P
by dreizbone - 2008-01-31 17:38:57
3.90 m33

not stable,
by J0539h - 2008-01-31 17:40:49
You hit the nail on the head.

I agree, of course I appreciate the hard work of DA, but what did SONY really add, (that I can't get with homebrew) on my PHAT? Plus it breaks IR Shell which I love for the USBHOSTFS + NETHOSTFS, and that application is not going to be updated. Sony updates for two reasons, 1) new features, which are rare, and 2) to stop homebrew. So you need to make a decision, is it more important to run homebrew and all existing ISOs up to today OR run new UMBs and features only available in the newer SONY firmware? I prefer the former.
by Jonathanx7 - 2008-01-31 17:45:30
WOW

Dont update if you have a fat, dont update. all it will do is take away your irshell, probably your theme, and i dont think you get anything new. if you have a slim get it IF!!! you dont have a cellphone and! have a lot of access to wireless internet. otherwise dont get this. for me(at least for now) its 3.90 M33=no irshell=no 3.90 M33 for me ^ok an add to that that its probably gonna brick your psp. i have a pandoras battery so no problem for me but if you dont have a pandoras battery then DEFINITLY DONT UPGRADE IT.
by Wally12 - 2008-01-31 17:54:22
Well done!

All I have to say is that this is freaking sweet!

skype...

Ok douches who are complaining about skype on phat psps this is impossible why?, it takes up more ram that the phat psps slim has 64mb ram, enough to run skype, dark alex, unless he highly compresses it, will never make a skype for phats and why the ***** are u begging from him, hes done more than all of you have so STFU we should be glad that we have a contributor to PSP gaming, and if you think hes not doing enough, lets see how you react if the PSP scene is fully destroyed, dont complain about stuff that is impossible, accept his offer dont ask for the impossible, if you want it so bad, make it, this is why noobs shouldnt even ask these comments

by FiremanSam - 2008-02-01 05:22:15
psardumper for 3.90

I've hacked the psardumper from dark-alex.org to extract the 3.90 files. It uses the decrypt prx from the 3.80 compat psardumper (for the K4LE support). The original file required the entire eboot.pbp to be loaded into memory, the hacked version loads the file on the fly. If anyone is interested, I'll dump the binaries and source somewhere on the net. But it is late and sleep is required. (as can be noted from my incoherent comment).
by cenobyte - 2008-02-01 06:29:48
wow that was fast

Was looking forward to cf 3.90 but didn't expect it so fast. Cheers DAX ! Preciate it alot. Tough choice though updating to 3.90... I really wanna check out the skype feature. On the other hand i don't wanna lose IRShell too... Dammit. Please Ahman we need IRShell !! If you are really retired, we need a successor to continue updating IRShell.

Note

In the readme.txt it says download 3.80 from somewhere, this is wrong, it should be 3.90, i think it should be changed in order not to confuse people who are new with the updating stuff :D Hopefully, in the future, Msn messenger would come out for the PSP, that would be nice.

80020001 fix

I had this problem you need to Press the select button on the main menu to bring up the xmb menu(M33 VSH Menu). Scroll down to UMD ISO MODE and press the "right directional button" to change it from Normal to M33 DRIVER.

Update 2 not showing up on this page.

As the title implies this page has not been updated to show rev. 2 of the 1.50 kernel add-on. Only the psp main page has.
by Tydude4Christ - 2008-02-09 16:16:23
nvm

It's now there. You guys must have just updated it when I was typing.
by xLinkinwormx - 2008-02-09 17:00:39
sooo?

any chance of an updated pandora to use upto 4gb or more sticks? i dont see why not, you should update pandoras battery, as not everyone has a 2gb or less memstick and when the new 16gb sticks come affordable , no one will want to own a 2gb stick
by SCLakitu - 2008-02-09 21:46:50

"Now, the theroetical limit is 4GB*512 = 2 Terabytes." Oh wow. I'd love to have a memory stick with a 2 TB capacity. More than my two HDDs. :D Nice to see the update fixes the memory stick bug. And I wasn't even aware that TA-086s had brightness problems since I have a TA-079. Good job DAX.

New to PSP

I have a brand new PSP Slim (White), I recently updated it with Sony's V3.80. I've tried to install this firmware, among others and I always get an error, #80020148. What am I doing wrong? Please help, I want to play all my Sega Genesis games. Thanks in advance for your help.

I get the message "This program is only for 3.90 M33"

Greets Dudes... I tried to install the 1.5 v2 update only on my Phat and I get the error message "this program is only for 3.9 m33" then it closes and goes back to my memory stick icon. I'm confused cause I'm already at 3.9 m33 with the 1.5 Kernal installed. Im just tring to update the 1.5 to v2 which supports 8gb mem sticks Any idea's?? Is this update only for Slim?? or is this 3.9 a new version 2? : (
by SCLakitu - 2008-02-12 17:56:07
No.

It's just as stable as 3.80 M33.
