Homebrew developer Yoshihiro, one of the great PSP contributors back in the day has created a utility that installs 5.50 debug firmware on PSP-1000 and run the application without any limitation. The 5.50 firmware testing tool will allow you to test games in file format during development and let  you set hidden options of your PSP that could possibly unlock the full potential of the system.

For now, the 5.50 firmware testing tool is not yet distributed by Yoshi. Stay tuned for further updates.

I don't understand, 'unlock the full potential of the system'. Haven't we pretty much done all we can with the 1000 series?

what this homebrew does is that, it allows the fat psp to have some functions of the psp go?

if it is so, then kudos to yoshi

I might be wrong, but the ability to jump up to 64mb of available mem hasn't been possible on the 1000. Couple that with the ability to change clock settings, and I'll install this when it comes out! I really enjoy my phat psp, and with the dedication and time that certain individuals keep investing in the programming side of things, hopefully I'll be killing time with my PSP for a long while~

BTW~ anybody else notice that the psp that yoshi used... his psp's nickname was different after the tool was loaded...IDK if it's important, just something I noticed~!

But I wish people would stop calling them fat/phat PSPs. Just call them 1000s, 1x series, or originals. Not some retarded gangster slang.

if by that you mean play downloaded content...

If you mean 16gb of flash memory magically popping out of nowhere and all of a sudden getting bluetooth and a sliding screen. I can't wait till this gets released.

It isn't retarded gangster slang, you're just too much of an idiot to know console slang. All original fatter models of consoles are called phats.

"you're just too much of an idiot to know console slang"

It was retarded gangster slang before that. Just cause you're too much of an idiot to know that doesn't change things.

Stop calling it that.

Phat, Phat, Phat, Phat, Phat, Phat, Phat. Not to be confused with your mom, which is fat. With an "F." Just kidding about your mom. Don't get mad. I'm sure she is, or was (in case she tragically died) a very nice and very slim woman. :)

The PSP 1000 only has 32mb of RAM, so using 64mb isn't possible. Don't know why that setting is there, or why Yoshi selected 64mb..

More FW/HB developers around is always a good thing. Thanks Yoshihiro!

As for 'unlocking the full potential' of the PSP... I wonder what happened to Utopia? That had me foaming at the mouth; better emulators and potentially first-party-quality homebrew. Nothing became of it...?

Ok

1. it's FAT not *****ing phat

2. the word Phat IS a slang work meaning

"Pretty, Hot, and Tempting"

3. the PSP 1000 model number is fatter then the PSP 2000 model number

(Thus why the 1000 is called a FAT psp and the 2000 PSP is called the Slim)

4. the calling of the PSP 1000 as a Phat PSP was start by kids that some how think it was cool to call it that.

that phat PSP is more tempting and hot and pretty. It has the 1.50 kernel and I don't want my PSP to be all shell and bones. I want some meat to my PSP. Yum.

Did you expect it to be done overnight, when even the initial discussion of it suggested it could easily be _years_ from completion?

# It will not be released.FreePlay 2009-06-20 19:34
Because it cannot legally be released. The testtool firmware is a proprietary firmware for OFFICIALLY LICENSED PSP developers only.

...nobody thinks this is fake?

Why would he come back just like that?

If he really did then that sure is great news, but still?

Also on a side note the onboard memory chip only has 32MB, accessing memory above that will probably result in either an error or a crash.

... is that the program, as you can see from the video, is a UNIVERSAL update installer. It will let you install ANY update EBOOT, regardless of where it came from.

Great but you've stated we (Non Licensed People) won't be able to have it due to Sony and there legal policy, it's like your parents buying you a brand new console and saying you can't have it for 2 months.

Thats the part I don't get, if he releases it it's illegal for most people to use, so really this is a post saying look at this but you can't have it?

Your all idiots for threading this many comments on a simple naming of the original PSP, Phat or 1000 it doesn't *****ing matter jesus. You can all it the phat or 1000 the PSP unit it's going to go emo and break down and cry if you use the 'ganster' name phat.

Jesus get over it.

The Nickname of the PSP changed because Flash 0, 1, 2 and 3 we're formatted. Any data that was on the PSP (internally) would of been lost. Notice after the universal updater finished he had to enter settings such as time zone and language again as if it was a brand new PSP.

The nickname is stored internally and simply generated a new one such as P544 after the reboot.

but why is everyone saying he cant release this?

as long as he doesnt release any sony files, he cant get introuble. thats like saying dax cant release pandora because it uses service mode. same concept, no? i think this program just takes the "all ready there" files, and enables them for the hacked psp user.

Allow me to repeat myself:

"The testtool firmware is a proprietary firmware for OFFICIALLY LICENSED PSP developers only."

It is not legal to share the files used to install it. The Pandora files were all modifications of freely-available files.

and im only assuming that these files are only an eboot and possibly a prx and it takes to files from the update.pbp ?

its not a vaild conclusion as to it doesnt say what files are there that were used, if the psp wasnt a dev psp.

# @freeplaymikal_rokz 2009-06-21 18:43
so the files used for official firmware are NOT like these? the OFW files are free and anyone can use them? and this debug firmware is only for specified devs? so how did Yoshihiro get his hands on it? and isn't almost everthing on the internet illegal these days? Whats worse uploading an iso/cso or uploading a debug firmware?

You have to be a licensed developer to legally have a copy of the devkit update EBOOTs. They've been leaked in the past, however.

Devkit firmwares are not designed to run on retail systems. The newer versions have to be severely tweaked to work at all.

Devkit firmwares are available (legally) only from secure, password-protected distribution websites owned and run by Sony. Anyone not authorized to have/share a copy can be charged with copyright violation.

I can't believe this guy is having so much praise and attention again? Anyone remember YOSHIHIRO'S MAJESTIC AND OH-SO-AWESOME downgrader for 2.0 ? Guess what. It never happened. No downgrader, nor any of his promises or release dates, nothing. DA came along and did it without all the hype and scams. Oh yes, did I also remind you guys of how Yoshihiro asked for donations for his work and then failed to deliver?

Ah... The awesome old days...
