UPDATE #2: Wow! 0okm has already released a proof-of-concept application which mounts ISOs to the UMD Drive! Although the emulated games can't be loaded as yet, it's only a matter of time before this feat is accomplished. And no, we will not host the file on our own servers, sorry.As always, we are reporting this because it is big news, not just for pirates but for the normal public as well. This is one of the first few kernel-mode applications for firmware upwards of 1.5, and we could hope for a lot more 'legal' homebrew in the time to come...
UPDATE: I had a talk with 0okm. And yes, this does mean an ISO loader for 2.6, and for the unlucky TA-082 people who can't downgrade. He hasn't revealed the rest of the source code for mounting the ISO, but rest assured that he has it somewhere.
Alright folks, we do not condone the use of ISO loaders and everything and we do love great programming and hacking when we see it. And personally, 0okm is one of the must-watch people on my list. He keeps churning out those hardware hacks like there's no tomorrow.
Well, he also creates software...and how! The latest entry in his blog states that he has been able to emulate a UMD on firmware 2.60. Now until I get some more info out of him, I can't be sure exactly of what he meant. But think about Humma Kavula's UMD Emulator and you'll get a hint of what I'm talking about.

hey #2... UMDEmulator is used on 1.5. This is used on 2.6, meaning that we may soon have an ISO loader for anyone on firmware 2.6!

Fort people with ta-082 motherboard psp , who can't downgrade, this will be a blessing.
Just because it is 2.6 fw doesnt mean TA=082 compatibility. Correct me if i'm wrong, but last post about accessing kernel mode on TA-082 was with oomkn's personal hardware modification, OR with the unpatched GTA:LCS umd. If this is purely software then we have reason to be VERY excited, but until then I am thinking this is most likely a hardware acheivement.
Wow...i'm supprised...you guys used to NEVER show news about ISO Emulation (even tho it's probably more legal than NES emulators...being that no one PROBABLY has a LEGAL way to back up their own NES roms...but that's another story alltogether...I guess devhook changed you guy's mind about this subject being "news"...

Problem here is 0okm has his own modchip, so unless he finds a way to "install" this on 2.6 psp, ppl are going to need a modchip. But this is 0okm, he'll find a way hopefully

What you are thinking of is downgrading not kernel.
Um..no. Ta-082 has full read/write access. And, yes it CAN have kernel but somebody has to be willing to code - and know how to. It can be done by patching the ram, creating a custom prx, etc.

Obviously the point is you can use load ISO's and not have to downgrade .. I know you can do it in 1.5 with Devhook, but now you can use all the niceties (which granted, aren't that much) of 2.6

I love it. It really doesnt affect me much to me because i have been using devhook for months on my 1.5. BUT, I think it shows that even if sony can halt or even slow down booster and devhook, others will pick it right up and release a different loader.

If you can emulate isos on 2.6 then that must have kernal access witch means this is the start of a whole new episode in the psp scene

They think they could stop downgrades with their evil TA-82. I hope everyone with that cursed motherboard uses this software for major piracy. I have 1.5 fw so I am not personally angry and I won't pirate, but I feel for people who can't downgrade.
I am just being a bit silly I guess. What will really teach Sony a lesson is a customized 1.5 fw that will bypass the TA-82 problems. I'm sure it's somehow possible. H@xxors > Sony.

On another hand, i guess downgrading would become unnecessary for those who want to launch isos and not homebrews.
And about iso playing : about more than 98% of the people having a psp doesen't know about this stuff or doesen't understand how to make it work. So eventually if there is piracy, leave to sony, as they can make un-piratable stuff.
Just to remind : sony produces music, movies and games. AND they sell dvd burners AND the media to copy... pirates just do the work where sony didn't work enough on... ^^

Now me and my friend can play games together! he has a 2.6 and i got a 1.5 i got lotsa umd games that i play but he doesnt coz he cant afford it so now i can just dump teh umd files and put them on his psp to play!!!!

Wrong. This uses the GTA eLoader. How else would it be launched unless 0okm wrote a signed-binary?

Wrong. The GTA eLoader will now allow both (as homebrew was its first purpose!).
If anything, this increase the value of the rare GTA eLoader version even more so. As now, anyone can walk into any store and buy a PSP (even though most are TA-082) and have homebrew and ISO capability with no downgrading necessary. (at least until they start coming pre-packed with 2.71-2.80, if that hasn't happened already)

"we dont condone pircay" yet it makes the main page, ur a bunch of tossers really, if you let people discuss the news using the comments section on the MAIN PAGE then you should let them discuss it in the forums too, if this is going to be used for piracy purposes then wtf about Devhook ... lets not forget devhook is the evolved form of hookboot and that was a "games loader" so that is also an iso loader.

For those who live in France here's a Tip :
If you are too scared about damaging your psp after downgrading this could be a solution : the FNAC stores propose a garanty for 40 euros that permits to breack the machine and have it replaced. Works for dead pixels.
So if you encounter any firmware *****, just shoot the psp on the wall and bring it back. ^^
I hope this will allow french developpers to have more confidence in making nice programming!

Sony produces films, music and video games. So why do they sell dvd burners and medias to copy what they produce? They even made the program to do it!
Why isn't Sony, with it's army of coders and talented engineers unable to make their machines un-piratable?
Why Sony need royalties on every game sold? Do the compagnies making hardware for pc take any royalties from games and software? So how do they make money? Do you really believe that sony doesen't make any profit on a psp and on memory sticks?
If sony accepted to make emulators after a machine isn't sold anymore and permit the community to play a game freely after 5 years the game realeased, there wouldn't be so much fuss.
And if games where really cheaper (its possible) and the machine dev friendly, how would give a f-u-c-k about downgrading and playing isos? Are you happy making a few marketing and bosses become rich? (you know how much a marketing guy wins every month against a developper?) Of course playing isos is stealing the developpers work. But they can pressure sony to be wiser when they make hardware.
And just think : seeing how hard it is to pirate games, there isn't much a threat here. And just notice that people in the video game industry ARE the first people to downgrade and stuff like that. I know it well i've been working at ubisoft and another studio lately... ^^
Just be happy that the happy few who will be able to play isos will be the ones who will download all the games done on the plateform and save it on their hard drives. And in twenty years you'll be able to play those old games thanks to the ones how managed to make ripping possible and the ones who download and save the stuff. Wow, Ookm Nice work! you are talented! but hey, a tip from the anonymous stranger, why tell the public and let them pirate and let them ruin psp game development? When there's someone copying games, don't u think that that's a oppertuniny of work for another peson. Think of it this way hackers create job oppertunities for people. With that Sony can make more money and create better protection against hacking.

Sony produces films, music and video games. So why do they sell dvd burners and medias to copy what they produce? They even made the program to do it!
Why isn't Sony, with it's army of coders and talented engineers unable to make their machines un-piratable?
Why Sony need royalties on every game sold? Do the compagnies making hardware for pc take any royalties from games and software? So how do they make money? Do you really believe that sony doesen't make any profit on a psp and on memory sticks?
If sony accepted to make emulators after a machine isn't sold anymore and permit the community to play a game freely after 5 years the game realeased, there wouldn't be so much fuss.
And if games where really cheaper (its possible) and the machine dev friendly, how would give a f-u-c-k about downgrading and playing isos? Are you happy making a few marketing and bosses become rich? (you know how much a marketing guy wins every month against a developper?) Of course playing isos is stealing the developpers work. But they can pressure sony to be wiser when they make hardware.
And just think : seeing how hard it is to pirate games, there isn't much a threat here. And just notice that people in the video game industry ARE the first people to downgrade and stuff like that. I know it well i've been working at ubisoft and another studio lately... ^^
Just be happy that the happy few who will be able to play isos will be the ones who will download all the games done on the plateform and save it on their hard drives. And in twenty years you'll be able to play those old games thanks to the ones how managed to make ripping possible and the ones who download and save the stuff. Most homebrew will be played once this loader is finished, all you have to do is convert the homebrew to iso format.
The old motherboards were finally getting less common, and now pirates can exist on any PSP. This is gonna kill the PSP.

since ta-082 is a new board which means the percentage for them buying an old gta is very low.
the 2.6 downgrader has more sting to sony than ookm's new app.

If Ookm is right about this, what will this mean for the psp? Does it mean a hacked version of the firmware will be released which allows the psp to play mounted isos? How would it work, i'm curious.

Thank you 0okm, for this beautiful app, which will stimulate the scene even more for the 5% of PSP users who use homebrew, half of which support ISO usage. I love being able to play my games on the fly, with slower loading times and all of the crap cut out.
Also, for those of you who like yer rum and use yer brains, Blockbuster has a thing called a "Game pass" where you can rent as many games as you want, 1 at a time (or more depending on whether or not you add to the price), for like $15 for the first month. So you can rent a game, "play it", return it, rinse, lather, repeat, and burn through their whole game collection in a fortnight. ;)
Long live prideful/reasonable piracy, and long live ISO usage for those of us who dont really like to lug UMDs around or long loading times, or who like to change games on the fly.
Lets all pray that this will allow TA mobos to play homebrew via EBOOT.PBP->ISO conversion.
Also, an idea...Howsabout a shell for download in ISO format that will convert eboots to ISO, cache them, and read them from there, sort of a bigger better eLoader for use with our beloved existing eloader? (EDIT: Couldnt it be possible for a coder to make an ISO that would boot up and run a pre-chosen PBP as part of the "game?")

Because of piracy, PSP games haven't sold as much as it should be. Thieves can now download through torrents, limewire, ftp, web, IRC, any internet connection. With such easy access for thieves, hardworking game programmers don't get paid. Their family suffering from all the stealing. So please, stop with the stealing.

I've just got my PSP today and its a 2.6 with a TA-082 board - should i stick with it in hope that the 2.6 can run iso's shortly or sell it on ebay and get a 1.5 PSP so i can do what i want with it?

it's an iso loader for 2.6. not just umd games that need 2.6 but 2.6 itself. the system software 2.6.
and u ppl think 0okm is wasting his time, feel sorry for the ppl w/a ta082 mobo who can't downgrade. sony have made it so any firmware below 1.51 can't run on the latest psp hardware.( btw the up modchip might run 1.5 on ta082. hu knows?)
and u will need an older gtalcs. u can tell by how it need firmware 2.6 and not 2.0. 2.6 is the patched one. get it orf ebay or something.
one more thing, we could have h/brew and iso emulation on 2.7x/2.8 if the libtiff exploit is properly controllable!!
no we can't t probably won't load on tiff eloader because it supports much less homebrew than gta lcs.
