Yet another time the REAL breakthrough stuff comes from FRANCE!!"The PSP port of UcLinux doesn't actually do anything useful yet, as once it gets up to the 'kernel panic' stage, it hangs. Freedom Fry has also promised a release of the source code for all you hackers out there in a few days time.
It has been tested on firmware version 1.5, but will not work on 2.0+ because it requires kernel access. This does there is a chance of bricking your PSP if something goes wrong, although Freedom Fry himself has ran it many times without problems. The download is available for anybody that wants it, but I advise against it for anyone that doesn't have a good range of expertise when it comes to these sorts of things; and remember - there's still a slight chance of bricking. This is a proof of concept, and not a fully functional version of Linux.

You fell for a prank... it's just a program that scrolls text to appear like Linux kernel messages. There are telltale signs in the faked dmesg output that indicates that this is not real (although it's very well done!)

i tested it on my 3.0 psp. and it works

I do understand how it works. I disassembled the binary to verify my claims that this is fake. I suggest you do the same.

This is brill!!! Go to www.callie.net and then go to the link says "Downgrader for 2.6". This uses Super Bock Eloader GTA Expoilt for PSP.this excellent but when doing it you have a 0.5% chance of bricking your psp because you have to write to flash0. This only works for 2.6 and if you got 2.0+ Firmware. You have to upgrade 1st. Thank me later... Good luck.
Ok I have to admit im no expert when it comes to linux, in fact I dont knwo what it is at all. Could someone please post a quick explanation or brief description of what this is and what is can do for the psp scene?

This _VERY_ much violates the GPL. I unfortunately do not know who to report this to, but it is AGAINST THE LICENSE to not release the soruce WITH the binary. No matter what.
didnt they already get a distro of linux to run on psp the same way they did windows 95? cant we just built upon that version of linux that worked rather than from the ground up?... what ever happens i hope it has a nice GDE like KDE or gnome, possibly even windowmaker :)
It's a fake, OK? It was a joke. All it does is printf() a bunch of text. I even know who made it, but for his sake I'm not going to mention him. It was a JOKE. It doesn't violate the GPL, and it's FAKE.

France makes high quality cheese but that is not there expertise and Cheese is what american media try associate France with.
Another thing is that you tell that they surrender in wars? , okay they're pacific ( now ) and it's bets cause war only brings trouble and is the worst things that humans can think of. And they din't have such a coward history as you may say , Napoleon Bonaparte din't surrender on battles , he won all except the las 2 and you know why? Cause When he marched his 480,000 troop army to Russia the Czar of Russia hid and the Napoleon waited to declare victory against Russia but the harsh and cold winters came and they had no supplies or food and they had to return to France. At the end only 10,000 survived and in poor conditions and there Europe makes the 5th or 7th coallition ( forgot which ) to end Napoleon's conquest once and for all and the las battle was at sea. And at the battle in America where the spanish and french fought against England to get british forces out , even though France lost Canada to England and Spain lost Florida , still they din't surrenderred and fought. What about when the americans had the war for the independance of the 13 colonies , France helped them alot and did France said "England has too much control here , we shouldn't halp the americans" no , they did not and they helped and the 13 colonies got their independance. And at the times of the French revolution or the day it started ( Bastille day ) , civilians against the army but they did not surrender and at the end won and cut the heads of the french monarchs.
Another thing is that you cannot call french people monkeys cause they are very smart people , and respect people from other nationalities not for someone to mock them.
I live in P.R. which is the only colony left of the USA and here we suffer discrimination from the north americans that live here and I can tell you that it would really hurt you if someone discriminated against you.

As for this prog, it's fake. You can tell by the filesize and the fact they haven't included any external files. Better luck next time. Is it me, or are there not many decent coders with a PSP out there? If there were, this port would have been done ages ago. It's been done for nearly every other handheld. Not that I'm complaining, the guys we do have really know their stuff, it just seems the PSP isn't attractive to most coders :S
its not neccessarily fake.. the EBOOT is 1MB large.. thats way enough to store a compressed Uclinux kernel in an internal static Buffer. Theres no need at all to have an external file. Infact it would be rather cumbersom to have to read it off the memstick and load it to mem...

Sorry, Kyle M. you are retarded there is no way this can brick your PSP the is just another way to scare people away from Linux (Power to Linus) In order for this to brick your PSP Flash0 and Flash1 has to be unmounted and mounted for write access which is not need for simply loading Linux...

No, this does not violate the GPL. The GPL does not require source to be distributed with the binaries; it only requires source to be *available.* Posting a binary-only download and promising to package the source soon is not a violation unless he refuses when somebody emails him to ask for it. All GPL violations should be reported to the FSF, who would simply laugh at you if you reported this project.

I have been using Linux Operating systems for almost 15 yeara now and I assure you this is no fake. Linux is the key to downgrading 2.6 Psp's to 1.5.

Fake or not, its still nice to hear that an actual supported OS might possibly be running on a psp, look at the desire for all of you to actually have Linux on a psp. If this is fake, i give the fakers commendation for giving the people that might actually do it motivation. We need to look on the bright side of things, fake or not it surely has inserted the notion of "Linux on PSP" into all of our minds.

if it is fake (yeah.. the guy preferred to work on the logo but did not manage to get it fully booted...) then there is still bochs and maybe DSL or sthng MUCH smaller...
BUT: for bochs first we would need to have an OSK implemented....
