The Modchip is REAL! More Info and a Pic of Undiluted Platinum!

Ó

Well, I'm just finishing off the 'PSP Hacking History' article and I notice this! Guys, the modchip is for real! We've just received some great info from them. Call it a 'Press Release', if you will. Anyways, on with the details:

The U.P. (Undiluted Platinum) is a flash replacement system for the PSP™ which allows the use of previous flash updates or custom firmware builds, opening up the possibility to run unsigned homebrew code on even the latest PSP systems. The U.P. contains 32MB NAND flash which is programmable from the PC via a high speed USB connection, using our user friendly software. You may boot the PSP from either its onboard flash or the flash contained on the U.P; the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash). Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been "bricked". Every effort has been made to make our flash updater software, which will be freely available for download, both as easy to use and reliable as possible. The software also contains diagnostics which can be used by installers to determine if an installation has been successful or not.
 Undiliuted Platinum
The U.P. has been designed to minimize installation difficulty and effort. A FPC (flexible printed circuit) cable is included which routes the essential signals from the PSP motherboard to the U.P. main board and U.P. USB connector. Copper enamel wire is included, which will provide the connection between the FPC cable and the motherboard signal traces. The FPC cable also helps by reducing the mechanical stress placed on the solder points, making a U.P. modified PSP shock resistant which is important for handheld systems. Installation aids are included, and installation diagrams for all PSP hardware revisions will be available for download, together with flasher software application, from our reseller's websites. More about installation together with install pictures closer to release.

The FPC cable end to which the USB connector board attaches is routed into the battery compartment and sits above the battery. The battery cover can be replaced after flash updating and the cable remains safely in the compartment until the next update is required, whereupon the USB connector can be clipped in place within a few seconds. This means that the U.P. is completely contained within the PSP under normal usage and avoids any unsightly external modifications to your PSP. PSP is after all portable, letÂ’s keep it that way!

In order to maximise the benefits that U.P. can provide its users, we have decided to take an open source approach with U.P and will be releasing source code for any software we release as well as full documentation for the U.P. hardware interface - including information on how to control U.P. from within PSP programs. This will allow anybody to create software which can take advantage of what U.P. has to offer. We have also sent a few prototype units away to some of the scene's best software hackers in order to give them a headstart at working on custom flash replacements - cant wait to see what people will come up with!

Features Announced:
  • Ultra reliable and feature rich Actel ProASIC Plus FPGA
  • Full Speed USB 1.1 ASIC onboard
  • Branded 32MB NAND flash onboard (same flash as used in PSP)
  • Stable and reliable flashing software freely available for download
  • Installation verification using flashing software
  • Ultra compact four layer PCB
  • High quality Japanese connectors
  • USB cable included
  • FPC cable included, reducing installation effort and improving shock resistance
  • Copper enamel wire included
  • Open platform development system for software developers
  • Installation has been optimized to fit entirely inside PSP
  • All PSP hardware versions/regions supported
  • User updatable flash
  • Low power consumption
  • Flash select via button press
  • Ultra compact PCB has been designed to avoid signal bounce
Bundled Stuff:
  • U.P. MAIN MODULE x1
  • U.P. USB BOARD x1
  • USB CABLE x1
  • INSTALLATION AIDS 1 SET
  • COPPER ENAMEL WIRE 1 SPOOL
  • FPC CABLE x1
It will be priced at around 75 Euros, or $90. A bit high, if you ask me. But completely worth it. I guess this is enough to silence the skeptics. And making the PSP 'brick-proof'? Wow, that's something which will excite everyone. This would obviously lead to more hacks since the hackers can experiment without fearing bricking their PSP.

Anyways, we will keep you posted with the latest developments to this latest hot news!

The Xbox modchip I bought and installed was $20 shipped but at $90, this may bring out new value in my ol' PSP. Cheers folks, raise one 'cause Sony is out of the picture for real and it'll stay that way. Bring on v3.0 Sony, I'll happily upgrade (my local) firmware...

Kudos to the U.P. crew for doing it open source. That rules.

» Amazing!

I haven't been following any PSP news for many months now, but a friend linked me to this article. Now I'm not quite sure what "unbrickable" means, since I haven't been around the PSP scene for a while, but does this ACTUALLY mean I can safely drop a brick on my PSP without damaging it?

Someone please respond, I've been contemplating this action for some time now, and I had almost lost hope. If this device will allow me to test my brick dropping skills at my own free will, then I just might shell out the $90!

Hahahahahaha no this means you cannot break the psp's operating system. A bricked psp means you cannot fix it.

» best of both worlds

my question is if you can update your psp's real flash to the latest sony update to take advantage of the new sony firmware stuff and use the chips flash as teh homebrew firmware?

Last monday i won a 1.5 PSP on ebay and it arrives tuesday. Now i wish i hadnt won it. I think i will resell it or my 2.6 on ebay and then just get this mod chip.

by tyler - 2006-05-28 09:02
» didnt u read the post that said it takes like $10mil to make a game?

Look at the UMD movies.. no one bought them because they were "expensive" to all these little cheap kids

but these kids will pay 90 bux happily to pirate stuff.

whoever releases this chip to the public is only DOWNGRADING the quality of future games because sony is going to get less money.

One quick question...when I was modding my XBOX I ffried it right away and had to go buy another one - How easy is this going to be to install? Can someone with limited soldering skills do it?

The PSP is about 250$ each - I dont want to go through many of them just to play homebrew.

by aykay - 2006-05-28 09:03

absolutely crazy. I can't wait to see what happens.

I'll buy one when I see a custom firmware.

by Parranoya Parranoya - 2006-05-28 09:06
» Bricking

Yes many people are having problems with bricks falling on their PSP especially in the UK...where the building are pretty old. Those who like in North America do not have to worry for most of our buildings are very new ~50 years at the most.

This "unbricking" will fix any problems that the flash memory on the PSP might suffer from having bricks hit them. Easy eay to test it. HAve a friend throw a brick at you ----slowly so you dont get hurt -- then holding the PSP like a baseball bat try to hit the brick - keep trying unitl you really connect hard. This simulates the effect of a brick falling on the PSP with minumal risk to bodily injury. Then install the MOD CHIP and voila its back to new!

by carno*****o - 2006-05-28 09:06
» wrong

totally wrong people who is sticking with 1.5 is because they don't care about games, this will allow people to hace homebrew and the posibility to play original games that require newer firmware

this is gonna be awesome, how hard will it be to install it by ourselves?

by Mosquito - 2006-05-28 09:08

» Of course they will make games...

Bull**** with the "oh my god everyone will play the iso game !". I know that alot of ppl will buy the real games. And if you look at the xbox and the ps1/2, then you will see that even though they have mod chips, ppl buy the games.

» Excellent

This will probably make me buy more games. At the moment I don't buy any because I don't want to have to upgrade past 2.00. This means I can have the newest firmware to play A1 games that I've bought but I can also use homebrew utilities and play the odd game either to try it or because it's not good enough to buy. Also I prefer to play games off a moemory stick because I find they run better. Case in point X-Men Legends is much better on a mem stick as it doesn't suffer from pausing through loading times

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-05-28 09:27
» This will increase the Psp's life cycle

I know that if I use this Mod Chip I will still buy Psp UMD's. The main reason I have not purchased some UMD's was due to firmware restrictions. With this Mod Chip I will be able to purchase new games to support the Devs hard work and at the same time play emulators in kernel mode. This will not kill the Psp, it will effectively make it the true handheld emulator king. No doubt there will be websites that will have a Mod Chip fitting service and I really think this will increase the Psps life as opposed to kill it. Don't forget that there are many people who have still never heard of Psp homebrew and most stumbled upon it purely by accident. This is great news, for once news that is not proved fake.

Yeah, This will deffinatly alow me to buy more games. I won't have to worry every time I update (PSP was 2.5 at the begining, and I hate GTA) that some new hack or somethign will come out the next day and screw me over, ya know. So I will be able to buy the new games, use their firmware, and do all that stuff. Perfect.

(Though this also might drive down the price of 1.5 PSP or even later buy a modded one on ebay for cheap, and not ruin my Best Buy warrenty thing on the PSP I have now =p)

I might get this modchip just for the "unbrickable" part, and the "running homebrew on latest firmwares" part also looks really cool. I'd definitely get this if i could find good installation instructions on the internet, and found that it's acceptably easy to install. It sounds like it is

by zodionic - 2006-05-28 09:59
» HAHA

well, looks like sony lost, with the specs on this, sony cant do anything to stop homebrew, or unsigned code of any type, because your psp will no longer be sony, it will be up to you and the mod chip developers to decide what is allowed and not allowed to be ran on your psp.

and DEVS will be able to experament without bricking fear, that means custom firmware, for ALL is just around the corner, as once they have perfected this by bricking there psp about 1000 times and fixing what goes rong, they can make sure it will work for all!

WIth the modchip you should be able to shut off power to it and if the power is off it is invisible and no firmware will be able to see it.

» games declining

I dont think that this will cause the psp to die out because of ppl dloading the games. I mean it just gives best of both worlds right? You still cant load street supremacy, splinter cell or outrun c2c on a 1.5 psp. To play them you'll have to update. I think this will increase sales, as everyone will upgrade to play the new games, but still have the ability to play homebrew because of the chip.

by liquidtenmillion - 2006-05-28 10:34
» This is completely unblockable

As long as the mod chip is initialized BEFORE the actual flash held on the PSP, it can never be overwritten, so sony can't do anything about it, so you will ALWAYS be able to downgrade your PSP.

HOWEVER, they CAN detect the mod chip at runtime, and if you have a modchip, sony can block out updates, which means that once you install the mod chip you will never be able to upgrade again.

In other words, you could never run higher than 2.7 with this, unless you are able to put the update on the modchip itself. In that case, everything will work perfectly.

by UKbigman91@netscape.net - 2006-05-28 10:36
» Nice, but...

Is it solder-less? I was a little confused by the overview of the instullation. I don't have a soldering iron and have no soldering experience, so it would be good if you didn't have to solder.

by user - 2006-05-28 10:38
» why i would buy the chip, NOT to play games what i download

I dont need to use this chip to play hacked games. i just want to play my own software like the wifi scanner. msx emulater ( what rocks :) ) and some other home made stuff. i own plenty of games. but cant play them proper on my 1.5. with this chip i could bootup the 1.5 for my homebrew and original 3.0 for my original games.. so i dont see the point why this chip for me would increase piracy, stripped games what are stripped to fit on a 1 gb stick are soo boring to play without the music and movies. get real buy real and enjoy the work. get emu buy the chip and go retro

" the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash). Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been "bricked"."

How does it handle bringing the PSP back on from sleep mode if I sent it to sleep from the onboard (legal) firmware? Do I need to hold L again while turning it on in that situation?

I AM SO HAPPY. I was just about to buy a second PSP so I could play some of the newer games, but now that this will be available, I am not going to do so. After all, carrying around one PSP is much better than having two to take care of.

I see this stuff good for those pirates who own a 2.6 psp, but really: you cant even play online so what is the point of buying this for 1.5 users...maybe it will come handy to those dev who work on the homebrew scene, nothing more.

I replaced my asterix faceplate, took my PSP apart a few times, and have seen INSIDE the unit and guess what?

that pic above shows a level of depth inside the PSP that most users will not be able to reach.

its UNDER the boards that contain the contacts for the controls

UNDER the screen, and under the metal plate that holds the screen in.

which rests on top of another circut board, which seems to also have been removed.

so it's like faceplate off, screen pryed out, metal plate removed, circut board removed, and chip installed.

then you miraculously put it allll back together no problem huh?

get ready for the boards to be flooded with "I busted me PsP" threads....

What would happen? Sony would be sued by Nintendo for making a Gamecube modchip, and they'd also feel silly for releasing PS2 mods over the years, and HDloader.

Seems like an awful lot of years building up illegal groundwork to come up with a fake mod to trick a few kids into updating, when 1.5 can't even play the latest games.

This is great news!!! Personally I think everyone wins here, and methinks sony's gonna get a shock when they realise they start selling twice as many games when this is released. This modchip sound aawesome but someone above isn't wrong when he/she said that if no ones buy games they'll stop making it but there are people that doesn't want to risk open their psp. Just like xbox and ps2 there are modchips for it and even solderless modchip too but people still go out and buy a $50 new release just cuz they're rich and don't want to risk their ps2 or xbox. This chip can be great cuz it can help people with new fw like 2.6 flash their psp back to 1.5 or running homebrew on 2.6 and 2.7 i think. but it does'nt say it support ISO loading anywhere.

I own 2 1.5 FW P$P's and am intrigued by this. If it's real & easy to install then I may consider modding 1 of them when the cost decreases significantly. Otherwise I'll stick 2 my original plan & update 1 when I buy a P$3. ILLEGAL MACHINE is right. I can see the posts now. If the chip works I may actually start buying games. Till now, no new games or FW updates were worth losing even 1 of my 1.5's. to people thinking the chip will kill UMD sales and PSP game development, I answer : look at the PS1. its sales wouldn't have been so huge if there weren't the possibility to play pirated games. And a huge amount of sold units allows the production of higher quality games at a much lower price.

Modchipping my PS1 didn't provide me from buying games. In the opposite, I wouldn't have bought the PS1 (and the games) if there was no modchip.

» Dont get to happy yet!

ok guys this is a big break. But sony will not be defeated. Imagine the whole community of psp's all running iso's. NO new games would be made, and sony would stop making new firmwares. This modchip will also delay the psp2. Again guys there is a good and a bad to this. imagine 80 percent of the psp community on iso's. this would piss sony off into deadstocking psp's and cancelling the project so do not abuse this modchip. Im not gonna lie to you ill get a modchip but once in a blue moon ill go to the store and buy a $5 game just ti show my support but not all the time. I will have a few iso's which will again require you to purchase a bigger size mem stick(where i would not be surprised if sony raised the prices on them). If these custom firmware builts on the modchip can be rigged i gues s we'll be able to rig it to like a 2gb or something but i i dont know just a thought. So in summary of all this get a modchip but still support sony once in a while just not to piss them off too much......

everyone who is happy about this is a fool, it's only a matter of time ti'll a sony fan tells the news to sony and sony puts this company who develops the modhcips in jail. QJ should just delete this new and everyone to find these look it up on google , tell the company to change the metatag to a secert code instead of description ( like mod2112ch!p or something ) , put the code here for one day and delete it from QJ , there is a small chace that sony finds out about this that way , plz do that soon before sony takes legal actions upon this manufacturer and the modchip doesn't become true.

you're omitting the mass effect. It's obvious that the modchip will increase PSP sales. And (much) more PSP owners represent much higher sale opportunity. Even if tomorrow people buy half fewer games than today, this still represent bigger sales for the game industry. Sony is a facist companythey deserve thier losses and they are going to be finished by2010 the psp SUCKS as a game system there are less then 5 decent games on it. the ps3 is going to be a catastrophic failure and bc they are invesing so greatly into blu ray its another nail in thier coffin, how do you go against microsoft. UP might save the psp bc its sales kinda suck as a game system the ds is much much better. Most people use thier psp as portable pc as it is. I have a 1.5 and I havent bought a umd or game bc I dont support sony a company that limits thier own tech, installs spyware on peoples computers and expects parents to dissapoint thier kids when they cant afford a ps3 needs to be SHUT DOWN

Ok, Modchip will not KILL the psp. Modchip didn't kill the PS1 or PS2 or Xbox or the dozen other consoles that have been modded. But Look at the Xbox, Hell I don't even play it much anymore but I do use it almost daily as XBMC player. Thing of the custom firmwares people and groups will make. The possiblity to use USB HD's, if someone gets that working I'm super glueing a 80 2.5" HD to the back of my PSP. And people will be able to levage the full power of the PSP now .. looking forward to PSPMC or something like that.

From what I, and most of you, have probably gathered, the phrase "allows homebrew on 2.7+" is incorrect. Its more like you have 2 PSPs in 1: one with 1.5 and one with 2.7+. This modchip is pretty much just a switchboard between two separate firmwares, much like MPH's Firmware launcher, just a bit easier to use. It does have its obvious pluses tho: higher firmwares and all homebrew coexisting, more memory, reviving bricked psps, etc. I'd gladly shell out $90 for it.

Ok, you're no Sony rep, main reasons being Sony reps spell better than you do, as well as they know what SCEA stands for.. you just said "hey I work at Sony Computer Enterainment America America"

At any rate, this mod chip will make for a more even war with Sony, they've come very close to losing this war on many occations, and this is another battle won.. no more firmware limitations.

» Holy cow, I can't believe I just freakin' read all of those...

First things first...

Would everyone please take a training course in standard english. I swear, all of this 'engrish' is giving me a headache.

Secondly, people need to understand that installing this modchip isn't as easy as putting in a UMD (which I've seen some people have trouble with :p). This mod will require a steady hand, a base knowledge of working with sensitive electrical circuits, along with the know-how to take everything apart and put it back together properly. All these kids that are like, "Modchip ownz, but me no can solder, is it solderless?" are going to be seriously disappointed when they figure out how to take the case off of their psp and then find themselves stuck.

Thirdly, the makers of this chip should only release this chip in limited quantities until after there has been confirmation of this actually working, so as to spare all of us that know what we are doing from having to read all of the "the modchip broked my psp, help plz" threads that will undoubtably show up all over the net once this chip goes global.

Anyway, figure I'm done rambling now. Everyone can get back to being kids again.

by dbz11_2000 - 2006-05-28 16:28
» Agreed podpet

The english was horrid, but you can see much much worse in AOL chat rooms, those people arn't even worthy of AOL...

Soldering will be an issue with it yes, but as a few people have said, just a bit of practice and you're good to go, just get some soldering metals and an iron and draw on something with it, trace it out first, if you can do it without all that many mistakes then good.

Sensitive electronics aside, if the guide(s) are good enough and people pay attention to them and follow them to the letter, they shouldn't have problems.

The "help plz i brok mi psp" threads will be there sure, but from 8 year olds who tried to do it with clothes iron or something...

Does anyone remember this really nifty system called the Dreamcast? it was doing well, until someone startd hacking it and allowing downloaded/copied games on it.

Now, its a console with not even 250 games on it. Thanks Hackers!

Whats gonna happen to the PSP now? huh... goodbye PSP >.

» To Phenie

The Dreamcast failed because of the PS1, not because of hackers... in all reality the Dreamcast was a superior console, but the games wern't that high of quality and all of the major companies went with the PS1. If the Dreamcast had been launched sooner, it could of been a higher seller, and maybe would of doomed Sony as a console developer. Sega had a great console, but hardware isn't anything without good software to back it up.

Yeah, just like the PSX, PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox (along with GBA, GBC, and NDS) right 195? Just a coincidence that you chose the one example of a recent failed system and offered absolutely no evidence of it being related to piracy. Additionally, you chose the one that didn't need any hardware modification, while the PSP does, like all the examples I gave. Shut up now.

And yes, the english on this forum is horrible. Here's my favorite so far:

"hey i work at SCEA america and if u guys think they havent known this was coming for a while and havent been preparing for it.....your all sadly mistaken......."

Does SCEA prefer being called Sony Computer Entertainment America america now? Must be a new thing. Do they really hire people who communicate in AOL speak? Did your resume read, "u should really hire me."? And, "your gonna be sorry if u don't."

Here's a tip for the kids...

You're is a contraction. It represents two words. Those two words are "you" and "are". When you say you're, it is like saying you are. That was fun! Now you try.

Your is *not* a contraction. It represents merely one word! Its purpose is to show ownership. As you can not own an "all sadly mistaken", the word you were looking for was "you're".

Guess what? Modchips are legal, they void your warrenty sure but they at legal! Emulators are legal. THE THINGS THAT ARE NOT LEGAL ARE ROMS, ISO COPIES, AND PIRATED SOFTWARE. So all of you who are freaked that they will hunt you down for getting a mod chip, think again, they will get you for your roms and iso ripped games. By the way the Dreamcast died because of Microsofts planned release of the Xbox, they were hurting from the Satarun and when M$ screwed them, the killed it themselves. The sales for the system were good the games killer, but they just didnt have the funds. Deal with it.

And there is still one question...Will it be able to play 2.0+ ISOs?

Cause it has two flash systems: A Sony one and a custom one

On the Custom you can play ALL Homebrew.

The Sony one wont allow to play Homebrew.(at least its not 2.01-2.6)

So we will still have troubles Playing 2.7 or even 2.6 games on our PSP

Or MPH is working on a new game Loader

by Shrink - 2006-05-28 17:44
» The big deal?

In my opinion this isn't the big deal.

See:

- 1.5 users don't really take any advantage of this yet. What's the big difference for them? They can use the web-browser ok. But those could also upgrade to 2.0 (and later downgrade again).

- Installing a 1.5 besides the latest firmware on your PSP won't give you the ability to load latest ISOs. That's because latest firmwares are nearly impossible to decrypt. So you can't play future ISO-Games anyways.

- What do these people understand mentioning custom firmware? Do you know how hard it is to code a firmware . I mean firmware that brings you REAL ADVANTAGES?

- Good thing is returning bricked PSPs to life.

- Bad thing is: Software-Hacks might die. And these were THE REAL ADVANTAGES! Just think: Wouldn't you rather have a firmware hack in possible 3.0 firmware to play ISOs than to risk demaging your PSP with the installation of Chip (seems really hard to install for noobs in my opinion).

- Next bad thing: Downgrading or doing another software hack won't smash your warranty. You can easily upgrade and send your PSP to Sony. Nobody will even notice you did a software hack. With this chip you don't have any warranty left.

- The Chip will end the fabulous careers of some really great coders like fanjita or MPH.

- Possible incompabilities with later firmwares than 2.7 won't reanimate those coders I think.

- Later chips will be better in any case. The only improvement of this chip is: You can use 2 Firmwares seperately.

Think what you want, but I hate this chip. I don't see it as a real breakthrough but as the end of a great PSP era.

I know it's easy to cheer now. But have a second thought on all of this. Maybe you are with me than.

ok guys this is a big break.

» Cost vs Use

This seems like an amazing and wonderful thing to have. the ability to run the latest games, and yet still have all the classic homebrew? Awesome, is what most people say. Yet consider the cost of the PSP itself, $250, and then the price of this $90. It seems pretty steep, even for something so convenient as having multiple firmwares.

I myself scraped together the last dredges of my money to afford my PSP, and any subsequent games (GTA was worth it) and now I will have to spend $90 bucks to do homebrew? I think not. This PSP lover is willing to wait until the price drops or they have a sale or something like that.

Of course, there is the slightest hope that they purposely claimed the price is higher than it really is, so when they come out saying "It's now only $75!" people will buy it all the more. I will pray for the second.

Just a few things:

1) There is no conspiracy of Sony deliberately generating this story to get people to upgrade

2) Sony are not making this mod chip, and are not supporting it

3) Sony can come and shout at PSP Updates all they want, they have no reason to provide Sony with any information about the modchip

4) This will probably lead to an increase in UMD sales, because now people can actually play the latest games

5) The ISO fear is unfounded - as many people have said, there are very few people who own PSPs and know about homebrew, even less that know about ISOs

6) This isn't going to be mass-market, only people who actually know what they're doing will be able to install the chip correctly - saying you don't have a soldering iron or have never soldered before means you screwed

Everyone has to shout their *****ing mouths of dont they... now sony will go looking at this forum seeing all the info they need for this chip then BAM they'll create UMDs that have to run on 3.00 FW and they'll make psps have a block to not upgrade chipped psps to 3.00

You must not have read any of the information or posts about this then if you think there is no advantage for 1.5 firmware owners. There is a HUGE advantage for us 1.5 guys. Yes, we get to use the web browser now, as you mentioned, along with all the other things that firmware 2.7 offers (flash support, AVC video codec, better ATRAC-3 support, WMA support, WPA networking encryption, ability to play every official game released, etc.) Since this chip essentially allows you to dual-boot, you can keep your PSP firmware updated to the latest release to play all of the official games and use all the fancy new software and hardware included. In addition to that, you can keep your mod-chip firmware at 1.5 or some other custom firmware, if any are made, so you can continue to use all of the same homebrew, emulators, and ISO loaders that you used before you installed the chip. The whole idea is to give you the best of both worlds. If you think that playing the latest games and using the new features of the new firmwares is not worthwhile or desireable, then that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but I think most will disagree with you.

in your face to all the doubters from the previous artical (losers)

all mod chip users for any system make up a xtremly small minority of users so anyone makeing claims of umds not selling or psp being ruined by this are totaly retarded and need to go to sony.com. In reality now that sony cant persicute this very small comunity and keep them from buying new games because of nazi updates they will sell more games. chips didnt bring down the main consoles and we could actualy burn those disks.

Best of all this is great news for the PS3 now im certain we will see a chip for it and not be controled by "updates"

» 3.0

I think it would be in the best interest of Sony to allow upgrades to 3.0 and beyond firmware with this chip. If they don't then they are giving up the sales of the latest games to this crowd and basically saying "please steal our games".

The only reason I haven't purchased Katamari and Street fighter for PSP is because of the firmware requirments on them.

I would buy them now, thanks to this chip.

The best possible thing would be to allow unsigned code to run on 3.0 baring any ISO loading applcations.

no matter what, I wouldn not install this chip BEFORE 3.0 comes out. I'd sooner buy a second PSP.

» Could Be A Problem

Everyone is forgetting one thing. Once the Mod Chip is released, sony can easily come out with an update that won't make the chip work anymore by disabling it, or they can come out with a fw update that won't let you update if you have the chip installed. remember when mod chips first started coming out for PS2, and you couldn't play games online because your system had a mod chip in it? sony can find a way around the chip and make it either useless or make it to where you can't progress the fw of your psp any further.

» Pictures do not mean anything!!

There has been so many fake news reports in the Psp scene as well as pictures / videos of these fake developments. Just because it has been reported as real it does not mean that it even exists. I will not believe it until I see it either. If this Modchip is real then I will start to buy UMD games again, if not then I will just stay with homebrew, particularly emulation which is my main interest. If Sony want to continue forcing firmware updates with new UMD's then I simply won't buy any. I had no intention of purchasing a Psp for emulation but once I discovered it, I realised how great it was and this is why I will never lose it.

I think this Modchip should be considered fake until proven otherwise. If it is proved fake, just look at how much wasted energy, posts, news and discussion there would have been. Have we not learnt anything from the previous fakes in the Psp scene?

A modchip may be illegal in countries where patents are honored. But look at a country like China where patents are loosely enforced and you have the means for manufacturing them.

Even the sale of the modchips is feasible if done in a country where there aren't strict standards. You may live in a Western country like U.S., Canada, Britian, etc....but not every sale takes place in the Western World. Someone could easily sell this on the net in a foreign country and it could be looked at as just another piece of electronic equipment by customs.

Those who think the next psp firmware will contain the ability to run homebrew apps must really have had too many accidents involving thier head.

If they did do this then the point of developers having to buy the sdk thrown out the window. Considering the sdk is worth quite a bit of money, and that sony make cuts from software sales means that homebrew will never be considered for a firmware update.

On another point i'm quite happy about this mod (if it is real), I guess this would also open doors to firmware modding aswell as a platform for homebrew devs to focus on, rather then stuff for 1.5s and another for 2.0+ and whatever.

Damn people claiming fake... It's like claiming the sky is red. My guess is that they're just a bunch of attention whores.

» well bricking could be good

well if you brick your psp and back it up using ur second nand memory (mod chip) to re-wite the bricked portion of ur psp, then cant you just purposely brick ur 2.6 or 2.71 and then wipe the bricked memory and write a 1.5 flash? if so then a lot of ppl would have 1.5's and just put the 2.71< fw on the mod chip?

and the sales for anything psp would skyrocket if this isnt erraticated in the 3.0 fw

just a thought

» What?? Do your homework

People claiming sony will introduce some form of modchip detection should do their homework... Detection of a modchip requires the bootup of sony firmware and what happens instead? your modchip boots up, meaning it is impossible to perform such a scan, without sony having to change the hardware of the psp...

» Wo'nt ISO me

I know I won't be using ISOs as i dont have a big enough memory stick I want to have 1.5 fw so i can play smashgp :)

by Apoklepz - 2006-06-07 09:07
» Smashgp eh?

Sorry to burst your bubble there dude, but if you're thinking the Smashgp homebrew plays and looks like Smash Bros. Meele for the game cube, you are so very much in dreamland. The truth is, It really isn't all that great. In fact, it sucks after playing it for 10 minutes, and even with all those caracters available for it (I bet you're one of those people who went "OMGWTFBTWI'dliketosmackyou rmominthebootyR OFLMAOthisPWNSH XZOR!!!!!!") it really ain't all that and a bag of chips. Besides, it's been hurting for an update for almost a year now...and it's not even multiplayer yet. Sorry to spoil your dreams kid, but a 1.50 PSP is worth much more than just for playing Smashgp. :(

» You people are such idiots

Sony losing money is a good thing? I'm surprised as hell that Sony is still bothering with the PSP knowing that there are a bunch of people so determined to ***** them over with it. If this thing is widespread...consider the system COOKED only with any future games they have planned for the PSP. You're going to complain about the lack of games too aren't you?

» Great
