Stream your music from iTunes to your PSP (2.60)

Sony PSPIf you've ever wanted to enjoy your iTunes library on your PSP but have been stymied by the PSP's lack of storage space - and are opposed to modifying your PSP too much - here's a simple, quick solution for you that makes use of the PSP's built-in Wi-Fi connection.

For this you'll need a v2.60 PSP and a PC or laptop running XP and connected to a Wi-Fi router, which has iTunes v6.0.4 and has its songs placed in at least one playlist.

First set up your PC or laptop:

1. Download iTunes-PSP-server to the desktop of your PC or laptop.
2. Open port 8080 or disable all your firewalls.
3. Launch iTunes and then run the program you just downloaded.
4. In your browser open the page "http://localhost:8080?

You'll know you've done it correctly if your browser takes you to an "iTunes RSS Server" page (if it doesn't appear, double-check to see that port 8080 really is open and that all your firewalls really are disabled).

Next set up your PSP:

1. Get your PC/laptop's IP address (go to 'Start' and then 'Run', then type 'CMD' then hit the Enter key and type 'ipconfig' in the window).
2. On your PSP, head over to 'Network' and then 'Internet Browser' and fill in  “http://IPAddress:8080? in the address area.
3. If you've done this step correctly, iTunes RSS Server will appear; bookmark this page.
4. Click on any of the orange RSS icons you see to "add this channel" to your list.
5. Quit the browser and head to 'Network' and then 'RSS Channel', which will bring you to the very playlist/s of the iTunes of your PC or laptop.

When all that's done all you need do is select a playlist and a song to listen to.

To be able to access your music from any hotspot (because these directions are only for streaming music through local Wi-Fi networks) just allow your local IP to be accessible externally by forwarding port 8080 in your router.

Also, when you update the contents of your iTunes library and the server's already in operation you'll have to select 'Reload Library' on the webpage in the PSP's browser to be able to listen to the new stuff. (To avoid this step, just update your library before you start the server.)

Lastly, only copyright-protected MP3 and AAC files can be streamed (not sure why, but that's how it is).

Give it a whirl and tell everyone how you find it!

Thanks to Snowbhord for the heads up...

easy to use but only 100 songs allowed

its an easy way of listening to music. but since i have a 1 gig i rather just use that. and only the first 100 songs on ur playlist will play because the psp cant handle more than that. but u can set up multiple playlists. i think its a good way or people that have like a 32 mb card to have some music on their psp while in their house.

@ #14

I have yet to find anything concerning iTunes and a 1.50; however, Mysticales has a great guide in the forums on streaming MP3s from Winamp using PSPRadio: http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=22328

iTunes?

I don't get why people use iTunes. Seriously, it's ugly & crappy. Use Winamp, looks loads better and has everything you need. :P

Just so people know.

Using this method, you cant play songs bought from the iTunes store. Also, the 100 song limit thing is really no big deal considering you can have as many playlists as you want. I also don't know many people that will listen to more than 100 songs in one sitting. And yes, you can access them from any wifi-hotspot.
by - 2006-04-20 13:04:30
100 songs my asss

i have over 1000 using this

"has everything you need" -iTunes doesn't? You can buy music off iTunes. Can you do that with Winamp? The only thing Winamp has more of is radio and video. Yet, if I want radio, I can just turn on my stereo. If I want video I can turn on my TV (and TV doesn't have a limited number of people that can watch a certain show). Oh, and iTunes is free (yes I know theres a free version, but Winamp wants you to pay $20 to be able to use your CD burner at x48 - didn't you already pay for YOUR burner?)

by - 2006-04-20 13:51:29
Only works with imported files

With this tool, you can only listed to songs you have imported. (MP3). It will NOT play songs you have purchased through the iTunes store.

Opening Port 8080

To open port 8080 in Windows XP SP2 (using Windows Firewall) go to control panel, windows firewall, make sure "allow exceptions" is ticked in the "General" tab, then move to the "Exceptions" tab, click "Add Port", then in the name call it something like "PSP Music" and type "8080" in the port box. Click ok and the port is opened
by - 2006-04-20 13:56:45
^^

Purchased iTunes music is the wrong format... the PSP only plays MP3 and WMA RSS feeds

help (once again)

wat is ie/firefox and port 8080? and whenever i run the program it says http::Server::Simple:you can connect to your server at http://localhost:8080\ im not technologically retarted but i need help
by - 2006-04-20 22:53:52
sigh

first off, dumbest thing to do is to post this on the front page. this has been out for months, and your posting this on the front page!? geeze, that is pretty bad. second, bad bad bad idea to post an unthorough guide on the front page, because god knows every single f'n noob is going to be asking for help. this guide doesn't go into any details about any of the opening ports or port forwardings or disabling firewalls. who in their right f'n mind would post a non-noobish guide on the front page!? third, i can't help but iterate once more that you are a morong. forth, pspradio is better, itunes is the spawn of satan, although i must admit i use it if i don't feel like opening up gta and waiting for homebrew to load. otherwise, setting up winamp as server is better, even more so with the plugin DJ to control winamp to change songs, etc. fith, you are a moron. -hbrohi

communication with the server failed

Here is how to fix it. Listen up cause I had the same problem too. NOW when the instructions say http://localhost:8080?. it means where it says localhost. fill in your wireless ip address. Also you have to run Itunes then run Itunes-PSP-server. Onces all this is done it should work
