Saying Who~a like Neo: Gamecube on the PSP?

Ó

We got this tip from Ocean19 and he says that we better go look at the BlazeByte forums and search for this post by Obiwan22. So off to the forums we went, and what did we find? We found this video:

Much like the YouTube commenters, we were very much annoyed that the creator of the video didn't bother to turn on the lights. Regardless, the bad lighting does not damage the potential "sweetness" of obiwan22's efforts. That is, of course, if this video isn't fake, as some of the YouTube commenters claim. But we're a welcoming bunch here at QJ, so we'll give obiwan22 a much deserved Neo-esque "whoa" for the sheer awesomeness of getting some GameCube on our PSPs.

If you're one of the non-believers (believe in candy mountain!), obiwan22 did promise in his thread post that he will provide a tutorial for his project in the near future. If you want to pester him about this project of his or if you want to argue with him about the authenticity of the video above, feel free to use our Read link below - it should lead to his personal site.

Awesome work obiwan22, we applaud your efforts. Now hurry up with the tutorial, ok? Before more folks scream fake.

I am thinking he is using a locationfree player, as the wifi light on the side is flashing, unless he figured out how to play thought he ps3's remote connect, which is VERY unlikly, so I am sticking with it being a locationfree player.

gamecube amulated... I dont think so. n64 is not even playable. so its either a video playing and a kid trying to match the keys. or its locationfree or other kind of video streaming to the psp. and like the description say... "obiwan22 did promise in his thread post that he will provide a tutorial for his project in the near future". that sound to me like its remote play. not emulation

Defiantly Location Free player, simply because the network light was flashing the whole time, and an emulator where you have to lug around a Gamecube Wavebird would be pointless, there would have to be some better control integrations built in, wich would be easier than figuring out how to connect Wavebird signals to a PSP without the receiver base. Heck, I can't even figure out a way to connect my Logitech wireless PS2 to my laptop for my Playstation emulator without getting a usb adapter for the receiver base.

The PSP isn't as powerful ad the GCN, no way it's emulating it.

PSP is clocked at 333Mhz.

GameCube is clocked at 450MHz

GameCube has a better sound processor.

GameCube has much higher video capabilities.

Posting this was just stupid. It would be like PSOne emulating a Dreamcast.

That's exactly what I thought as soon as I saw this video, that he is playing gamecube and feeding it to a capture card on his PC and then with vlc is feeding that to pimpstreamer. This way he doesn't have to do any tricks to get the wavebird to play the game, he just has to be in range of the gamecube like normal

It's no emulator. Handy I guess if you're in bed and want to use the PSP as a portable TV. However, from watching the video, there seems to be some kind of lag. I couldn't tell if it was because of the crazy shaking camera or because he's using WiFi.

wouldnt this be the only possible way to play gc and newer systems on the psp remotely, hes got the video feed, all thats left really is the controls, if there was a homebrew for the psp that received the streaming video of the game and at the same time could remotely control the gamecube, with a little tweaking in time delay, then wouldnt remotely playing a game from streaming video be possible on pretty much any system?

Reply

# no srryGuest 2007-02-07 19:47
i think it isn't real because

- the screen fits and the gamecube can't blit in widescreen.

- it would be very schocky if it's real.

- it just can't do it because the gamecube is even more powerfull than the Playstation 2.

anyone here can get a vid of gamecube on their psp, even the noobs who barely even know how to convert correctly. thats what this vid looks like, and he just apparently tried to line up the button presses with the vid on the psp.

and another thing, it doesn't matter if it says anything about emulation or not. the gamecube is not going to stream a game to the psp and neither is dvd player for it (i have heard of that method of playing gamecube games). the psp has very little internal memory and very low processing power (around 222 to 266 Mhz) compared to the gamecube. sure, there can be a mod made that would allow the gamecube to process all of the data and then send it to the psp just for display, but that would require a team of hackers/modders working for a bit of time (like the psp modchip ppl), and this vid was posted by apparently some kid who isn't even old enough to drive yet (excuse me if i get the age area wrong, but that voice did not sound like a 16-year-olds).

then point is, theres no way this person could actually be playing gamecube games on his psp, emulated or not. location free only has the advantage of video for psp, not games

It's NOT fake, it's REAL, but it's nothing (but a 480x282 pixs wide screen for a gamecube)... so you got brand new nice real nothing!

(if you understood this, you may skip the next "huge" block... lol)

I don't understand people that would just think that it's emulation...

I doubt the ATI GPU of GC emulation is possible in a better performence rate that 10% on psp CPU... even by using the 2nd cpu (media chip, same as core cpu)... so even discussing on emulating a gc on psp is stupid... and don't forget that a console is not just a cpu and a gpu... it's a set of many others chips put together... so, if you have not even a powerfull-enough platform to emulate GPU decently, how could you hope emulating CPU and other chips ? And as said before... GC = 48MB ram... PSP = 32... and if you map the 16 missings MB on the memory card, i can ensure you it would not run at full speed ;) you'd get about 1 frame per 6-7 seconds maybe when interacting with these 16MB of ram...

So,

1) noobs, stop claiming fake when you don't even know what it is about... It's not what you were expecting with a such post, but it never said it was... just try to think 10 secs before "Waowing" when you see something that big...

2) QJ: Stop making useless stupid posts

3) Kids: Keep your wonderfull videos of your GBAs with tv tuners playing X360 to prevent noobs from posting 50 comments out of topic :) Impress your brainless friends in real life in you want but don't post them...

# i dont think...Guest 2007-02-08 06:05
I dont think he ever said that the psp is emulating the gamecube. He said playing gamecube on the psp. As many others have said, emulation would be impossible because of the system's differences. The clock speed being the main one. Second, you can see the wii (that's what he's playing it from. He even says it in the video) in one of the quick pan's in the dark. As everybody else has stated, it is more likely that he is just streaming it though vlc. Hell, it might even be through the browser because as many of you might know, the Wii has many streaming servers that can transcode on the fly to FLV (flash video) which the psp is more than capable of playing.

This is a pretty good idea if this kid didnt make a video...all you would need is to connect the gamecube/Wii to your PC, and use PMP VLC to stream the video and sound to your PSP. Then, the controller is NEVER connected with the PSP. It is working with the gamecube/wii, which when buttons are pressed, it sends it to the PSP via, streaming. Simple stuff, you could probably do this with anything that doesnt stream a better quality than the PSP.

umm...... hey everyone, you all are so dumb, this is using the locationfree to stream and you made me have 10000 views on my video and 2000 guests on my website. BTW I asked someone to make a video using the xbox and ps2 to stream this. So look forward to that!

# .......are you serious?MrDaBucket 2007-02-08 10:50
The PSP isn't powerful enough to play that game.

There couldn't be a GC emulator for it without an announcement already or some work needed for it.

And how would a Wavebird communicate with the PSP?

My hypothesis: This is a PSP. set to have Wi-Fi switch on, watching a video of someone playing Smash Bros.....and the Wavebird is just on.

Dude, you're so ignorant... your third "reason" for why it's fake is completely irrelevant. How much the PSP can HANDLE and how well the PROGRAM runs is two different things. The PSP could run GBA emulation so easily it's not even funny, it's just the gpSP emulator isn't perfect, so it's probably not ever gonna run EVERY game at fullspeed!

note how when he pushes the buttons on the wavebird, it takes a while for it to respond on the psp. That's because he's playing a video! But one thing that puzzled me was how did he get that wifi to flash?

Wavebird uses IR (infrared radio waves) so its definitely a fake. its a video

Look you morons, this is NOT an Emulator. It's just some guy managed to figure out how to get the GCN to act such as a Television screen on the PSP. He's just using the PSP as the television.

Similar to PSP VNC, or considered as PMP VLC I guess, it's just a different process. Notice how the word "Emulator" was not even included in this entire entry. So SHUTUP trying to prove something.

I am positive this is the location free player he is using because, first off the wifi light is going off like a beacon, and second of all do you see the delay beteen the controller and that psp screen? If you want me to prove it I will hook up my gamecube to my location free player and show you the exact same thing.

# yeah....Guest 2007-02-08 12:57
its not a homebrew emulator. he most likely streamed it from his pc or used location free player with a game cube hooked up to it. that would explain the wireless controller. otherwise he would have some sort of adapter hooked up to his psp in order to use a gamecube wireless controller. but then again the infared. but i highly doubt it

At first it looked real enough. I saw it load up. Then I noticed when he used the controller that it lagged. Notice how he presses the "B" button and it takes like 2 seconds to go back. Yea thats called a bad connection buddy. He has DSL. Which verifys the second post of him using PMP VLC to stream his gamecube to PSP. This is 100% a fake. Unless otherwise proven. I can also tell you something. WHY THE F*** would the wireless gamecube controller be accessed via wifi? It is an IR system not f***ing wireless. This guy is obviously a kid if he thinks wireless means wifi.... Why else would he have the wifi light on and the memory stick not blinking.

# Fake!!Guest 2007-02-08 14:16
He could have download a clip of someone playing smash bros and timed when to press the buttons on his controller. If you notice he pressed start and like 5 seconds later it went.

Either it's lag or he planned when to press buttons. It could've showed him going into a match and executing moves that would be more interesting!!

Just a video on his psp, the flashing led light never stopped, even at a menu screen.

your so stupid this video is so fake. You have way to much time on your hands. Its not that hard to get a capture card on your GameCube, record it and convert into PSP format and run it on your psp and repeat the steps you followed on your real TV. If you notice the LED Red lights wouldn't stop blinking throughout the whole VIDEO if it was anytype of emulator it wouldn't be reading at such a fast framerate. you should try to come up with something that is a little realistic.

Actually if you listen to the first few seconds of the video you will hear what sounds like someone putting a disc into the gamecube, and closing the lid.

The fact that there is nothing on his screen prior to him loading the gamecube and then all the sudden the gamecube icon appear seems a bit odd. You can also notice that his network light is blinking excessively even before the "emulator" loads. This to me would agree with everyone has said and he is just streaming his tv to his PSP.

And you have to sort of agree with the fact that there isn't even a full speed N64 emulator out for the PSP so it would be sort of hard to believe that a full speed gamecube emulator is out and working.

I could be wrong though.

hey guys, please dont be so easily captivated.

besides location free player or vnc/vlc, there's an even easier way to fake something. create a video of your console choice for fake emulation. record the intro of the psp, mix them 2 videos together, then video capture yourself prentending to play it when your just actually playing it on your psp video mode. and yes you should put the hold key so that pressing buttons on the psp doesnt ruin the video. and if you fake people you less than zero.

Just in case you guys don't have any idea of the current state of GameCube emulation: it has been emulated very well. The emulator is probably more accurate for the Cube than UltraHLE was for the N64 when it came out.

That's in terms of accuracy. Speed however, is another story. In tests I did with Super Monkey Ball and Metroid Prime, it ran at an average of about 4fps and rarely went over the 8fps mark.

My computer is a 3ghz Pentium 4 with 1.5gb of RAM and a Geforce 7800GS. It's a pretty normal gaming PC but that's about uh, a million times more powerful than a PSP.
