PSP FW 3.50 downgraded with magical un-bricking memstick in China (WHAT?!)

The Illuminati exploit (on dl.qj.net) has been downloaded around 4,000+ times. Lumines sales are reaching stellar marks with a 14,000% increase on Amazon. And right about now, everyone's just sitting, waiting, and wishing for that downgrader. Seems like we should turn our eyes to the other side of the planet for a softdown for PSP FW 3.50 though. Or do we?

Below is a video fished off of the far reaches of the net, hailing all the way from a store in Shenzhen (a sub-province in Guangdong, China) where they claim to know how to softdown a PSP with firmware 3.10 or higher. This vid shows a PSP FW 3.50 downgrade in action with the help of what some people strongly believe to be "the magical un-bricking" memory stick and battery from Sony.

Why so? It's because the salesclerk from the store kept telling the girl (the one videotaping the whole downgrading process) to only show the right side of the PSP - not the left side where the memory stick can be seen. Seems like these guys want to keep things under wraps. (Damn!)

Common sentiment online holds that the video doesn't appear to be fake and pretty much the real deal. We've yet to hear anything from Dark AleX or Noobz about this, so keep on your toes for more updates! The (homebrew) game's afoot!

..

I wonder if their offering this as a service..?
by - 2007-06-25 19:22:46
guess

maybe they don't want the right side to be filmed because of the memory stick light. it could be fake and they're not showing the memory stick light because it's not blinking, or maybe it's real and they just don't want us to see the memory stick light.
by - 2007-06-25 19:31:28
im calling shinanigans

they didnt even launch a game or anything just popped in a memory stick and BAM it worked. we all know that doesnt happen.
by - 2007-06-25 19:32:48
What?

How does that make any sense though? The video doesn't cut out, so it's not like there was editing involved. Even if it WAS a hoax, and that was the problem, it's not hard to make the PSP read something from the memory stick to make it appear as flashing, even if it's not doing anything.
by - 2007-06-25 19:32:55
my guess

I think that this is real, and that sometime soon we are going to know how to do this.
by - 2007-06-25 19:32:56
THIS IS REAL

hey all, this is real, i use to live in hongkong, they sell these services in malls and places with lots of programs and stuff, not suprised that they have a service for the psp, pretty cool hey?
by jkoz - 2007-06-25 19:34:31
i call schenanagins

why the hell dont they want the ms light shown? cause its gotta be a clever fake... if they dont want to get into trouble, they shouldnt make the damn video in the first place, i dont see what good not showing the ms light does
by - 2007-06-25 19:34:40
Again, What?

That doesn't make sense either. You don't even KNOW if they put a memory stick in. He put a battery in, and it OBVIOUSLY did something, because the PSP appears to have went into service mode, or something of the sort. If it's false, good on you, but it still doesn't mean anything.
by - 2007-06-25 19:34:53
fake

fake, why not show left side, *****s.
by - 2007-06-25 19:36:06
what if

what if the MS is a special card connected to a PC of some sort He didn't want us to see the connection
by - 2007-06-25 19:37:08
Eh

I wouldn't doubt that if it was real or not. The Japan are pretty smart..
by - 2007-06-25 19:38:12
.

I think that it doesn't need a application because, as the title says, it uses the magical memstick. And, from what i understand, it doens't need any additional application because it is used for un-bricking, and how are you going to execute an application if it is bricked?
by - 2007-06-25 19:39:02
Mmm

Thats FAKE. THey are just running a homebrew that 'changes' the psp version ... SIMPLE. Thats easy to DO..
by - 2007-06-25 19:39:42
What?

is it me or did it only downgrade to 2.71? It wasn't clear at the end but if it was 2.71 then why not go all the way to 1.50?
by - 2007-06-25 19:40:06
THIS IS WHY THEY DONT SHOW LEFT SIDE

they are NOT hiding the memory stick but the screen, the chinese people who r selling this program does not want anyone to know anything about it so nobody knows so they can sell it and make more money, not the memory stick.....!

And what about mac adress and nickname position? (3.50)
by - 2007-06-25 19:56:28
fake

just after the 3:55 point the psp and hand completely disappears, it wouldn't be that unfeasable to assume he had a second psp with a power cable plugged in that he switched over. really amatuer and lame job imho.
by - 2007-06-25 20:05:22
Not Fake.

Each stick has its own unique serial number and when its placed in the PSP, along with a Certain voltage battery will flash the PSP back to whatever version is on the stick. much like the Recovery menu on OE firmwares. These sticks are not write-able, you cannot change any of the data on them they are read only which is why it was only flashed back to 2.71. Now back to the serial number, if the camera managed to pick up the serial number and sony saw this, they could easily track it down with legal threats and so on and then the person would be, well, *****ed.
by - 2007-06-25 20:06:09
.

Does it matter though? Even if it was connected to a PC, it still downgraded it.
by - 2007-06-25 20:09:56
just a thought

but remember, it's 3.50. the only homebrew on 3.50 (currently) is the hello world. it could have been something through the web browser (flash, html, javascript, etc.) and he just turned it on from being in the internet browser... but that would mean editing the video. so it could be real. what I said was just a thought or guess.
by Wicked_Insider - 2007-06-25 20:28:17
I'm wondering...

... whats the point in downgrading if somebody has found a way to run HB from 3.50?
by - 2007-06-25 20:41:57
the special battery?

If I remember correctly that is the special battery you can see that by the yellow glint..... as for the memory stick part I read something somewhere about there being a "jumper battery to get the unbricker working and then there is a normal memory stick that has the firmware on it well that's my 2 cents and a half
by - 2007-06-25 20:42:06
@holes

i wish these morons who release these hacks for all firmwares understand the damage theyre doing.nowadays ppl with unhackable firmwares keep the psp alive for those of us who bought them early. wtf is the point of hacking your psp to play iso's if the games are only getting *****ing crappier.morons good job keep *****ing everything up.psp +dreamcast.
by - 2007-06-25 20:45:56
fake

I second that. I saw the psp go off the screen and I was like wtf? they believe that?
by - 2007-06-25 21:05:06

Why were the version and mac address switched while it was at 3.50 and then at 2.71 they were back to normal
by - 2007-06-25 21:06:53

uh.... riiight.

yeah dude, like they can read a *****ing serial number off of a *****ty youtube video.
by - 2007-06-25 21:16:15
I knew it...

I once replied to someone in the forums about how the PSP checks the memory stick for a file on start up because it blinked too long just to detect that it was there. I knew it had to be looking for a certain file, I just never knew which one. And I still don't. Someone needs to hook up a cable between the card reader on the PSP and a serial port and look to see what it is requesting...

by - 2007-06-25 21:40:49
some people....

Some people that post on here aren't really smart. Why on earth would they be hiding the memstick's light? It's obvious they were hiding information that was being shown on the psp's screen. Information that could lead to a program being written to downgrade the psp easily just like they're doing and therefore means bad business for them? If they were hiding the memstick's light, they coulda easily done that without leaving our more than half of the psp's screen!
by - 2007-06-25 21:47:56
could possibly, maybe, sorta, be real

I was studying it. and it does look pretty legit. I think they may have set up the psp before hand, so it doesn't need to go through the whole initial boot process just to save time. but they do switch memory sticks early on. and after they switch batteries they remove the battery in general. my theory behind all of it: The memory stick switched contains the needed firmware files. The battery is just a modified sony battery. with the positive end switched to connect to the third input. The power cable is connected because the third connection can only boot the psp. into a sort of recovery/safe mode. The cable is needed to power the screen. The battery is removed upon startup because the charger cable only charges the regular positive connection, but doesn't stop flow of the secondary positive connection being used, so the power cable and the battery are now both powering the nand. this could somehow mess up the writing process of the firmware, so the battery is only used to "jump start" the psp. but once the psp is going the charger cabel is all the power needed. Once started the psp is in this "recovery" mode where you perform diagnostic tests to see if everything is working(recognizes button inputs, read/write to the MS/usb connection) and, if needed, write to the flash. which is what they do. I'm not sure why he doesn't want the left of the psp shown. They don't jsut not show the left of the psp, but a majority of the screen. I think the psp may displ;ay things about that specific psp. Mac address and serial number. maybe he's afraid sony could possibly find him based on this information, or if he sells it to a customer, findthat customer and lead back to him. it could just be a paranoid thing. I don't think it has anything to do with the MS light. if he was using a homebrew app to fake it, he could of probably easily loaded a useless file into the memory, or wrote some useless file to the stick in a background process to make it look relistic. I think this actual diagnostic mode is actually on all psps. it would be easier to diagnos a problem from the actual unit than using the serial port, or usb connection on a ocmputer. Plus if one of those things is broken they can't run any tests at all. this mode has to be present on all psps to check things like temperature, button responses, make sure no dead spots are in the analog movement. whether the charger cable is recognized and tons of other things. something a pc can't do. A lot of devices have a thing like this. To see what I'm talking about turn off your ipod completely. and when you turn it on again hold down the menu, and rewind button. it'll boot into diagnostic mode. Most devices carry this. the psps is just a little harder to get to apparently. as far as I'm concerned this seems plausible.
by - 2007-06-25 21:54:33
another thought

i just thought of somthing. when he turns the psp back on it looks like he holds down L and maybe triangle. maybe the psp has two internal flashes and wehn he held down L it booted 2.71 and holding triangle booted the homebrew application that looked like it was flashing the psp. there could be many possibilities that this is fake and there can be many possibilties that this is real.
by - 2007-06-25 22:00:57
everyone

everyone, this "downgrader" is real, so what if it was a different mac adress, it went down, and when they put this up for download all of you retards who called this bull***** is going to feel really stupid for talking ***** to something that actually works... aint the video enough? to me thats enough proof, just wait. you gon see a download link to this "magic files" for downgration.
by - 2007-06-25 22:07:54
@XxKill3RxX

usually to get into a diagnostic mode you need to hold down a sertain button combinaiton. this prevetns anyone that doesn't know the combination from entering this mode. and in the case with the psp, anyone who gets ahold of the battery that doesn't know it's purpose will probably disregard it hen they try to power their psp with it. unless you know the purpose of the battery you would never think to find a way ot actually use it. Sony doesn't want people to access this mode. but at the sme time don't want to make it a pain for them to access it. so a simple button combination fares just as well.
by weirdkd08 - 2007-06-25 22:20:42
no web browser

when they turn it on there is no web browser icon or maybe its just the video but hey thats my thougth remeber there is an application that u can name ur firmaware into anything mabey thats wat they did or mabey this could be the end of sony
by - 2007-06-25 22:34:20
Service mode

Yes this could be quite feasable. I agree here that the service mode does actually exist on the PSP and Sony would be the first to express their interest in preventing the public on knowing about this considering the whole custom firmware battle. My only question is that a tool like this would not be available to the general public, if anything i would be expecting a Playstation repair centre to only have something like this. Definatley interesting how this guy got the unbricking package.

@ValiX

if that's true then it is a fake. I had come up with my own fake theory aswell, but after typing up how it could be real I didn't fee like getting into it. basically, in short. old custom firmware. psp originally automatically boots into dechook emulating a later firmware, that has been changed to appear as 3.50 turn the system off. play with the battery to make it look like your doing something, restart the psp, and holding down those buttons auto launches a homebrew made to look like the screen showed. don't show left of psp because the MS light WILL be flashing. if it was actually running a service mode from the psp itself the MS will not need to flash unless writing the firmware. which it would not need to do at the beginning. so in short, that was my second idea. I just didn't feel like typing it out. but this whole mac address placement thing pretty much solidifies it as fake. I didn't know about that since I never used 3.50

Two Flaws

The PSP is taken away from the camera's view several times, the PSP could be switched EASILY for a brand new 1.50 PSP. (In the market dealers possession) You should also notice how, when the psp's left side is 'whipped' from view for only an INSTANT. The large clear "BOK" on the screen, simply disappears, as if the PSP has been switched off. (or replaced :P) Also, somewhere near the end, the ladies hand jumps from the side of the psp, to nowhere, whilst it looks like she removed it quickly, run it through slow-motion, and it actually disappears, it's the artifact of a cut. Also, why IS he hiding the left side of the psp?

by - 2007-06-26 02:32:18
I know a way to fake it

I dunno if it's real but. If he had 3.03 OE he could use homebrew to change the version number then have it auto boot something from the mem stick. I dunno if this would work but you saw him put something in the memstick area. that could have the eboot for autoboot on it making it that the recovery way he made that would show more info and wouldn't have the part, (need battery over 75%) ^_^
by Zobbah - 2007-06-26 02:57:18
It's real!

I bricked my PSP which I bought in Hong Kong few months ago. On my last trip (in May) I went to the same market to a new one.. I told told the people that sold me the old one that I bricked it when changing firmware. They told "No problem we fix for you, free" I was very surprised, because I had spent a lot of time googling about un-bricking and never heard it was possible. I'm surpirsed how late the online community is finding about this.
by - 2007-06-26 03:06:49

Maybe This Video Is A Fake?

All rite I am sure that this is the real deal, but I have some reasons that this may be fake. Forgive me if I'm wrong, been away from home brew from awhile, but isn't their a home brew app that allows the PSP user to make it appear as a different firmware then what it actually is? So the PSP could be a home brew one and they could've just made it appear to be firmware 3.50 (he didn't show any 3.50 firmware abilities being used, like world wide remote play) , messed around with some stuff on the PSP to make it look like he was downgrading, which he is actually switching it back to 2.71 throughout the whole video. Just an idea for all the non-believers to elaborate on. My opinion is its real since he started up the system and the cold boot played(whatever its called).
by Zobbah - 2007-06-26 03:37:09
Where?

Sham Sui Po computer market in Hong Kong is where I got mine unbricked, it took about 10 minutes. Got it for free. They must have that magic memorystick and battery. Once the chinese get their hands on something, they can replicate it, soon I believe they will start selling this kit online

JigKick for real? Let's see...

I live in Laredo, TX where the PlayStation Repair and Replacement Facility is. I know a couple of sources that work there (I met one on November 16 who was installing a PlayStation kiosk) and I'll see if this battery and memory stick is true, and if I can have one :D

It could be fake, In that video, The girl asked: "why don't you use a higher pixel camera?", the guy replied:"I do not wanna use a higher pixel camera because other people would not really understand what I am doing." (that means he wanna trick the buyer). " thats a qoute from sky look the reason he dosnt get a better pixel camera is because we will know what he is doing ..if we know what he is doin it will be extremly easy for us well (DARK_ALEX) and (NOOBZ) to understand the proccese and it wont take them that long to relase it :D wich is a good thing dont get me wrong.. well u know this aint j=fake and yes here using the magic meme crap well goodbye

This could be real

Well after reading/skipping most of everyones corny comments some people had a point going on, but if you really came to think of it ,why use a high pixel camera to see the psp PERFECT an be able to see everything on the psp the screen etc which then one day SONY will see the video them self and those people would be fed, oh yeah if you noticed most psps that you buy come in firmwares 2.60,2.71,2.80 and why would sony want there psps to actually return to 1.00 or 1.50? These people probs somehow got a battery from sony an are downgrading psps for people for a small fee? Welll what do you think erm?
by - 2007-06-26 10:45:13
its so obvious

they switched the PSP 3.50 with a 2.71 and the web browser wasnt there in 2.71 also he tried to trick you guys ITS FAKE!!!

idea...

did anyone notice that at the end when the guy was navigating through the psp to show us the FW that when he went to the video and photo section, NO MEMORY STICK INDICATOR came up. The picture of the mem stick that shows how much memory your psp has never came up. But i could be VERY wrong because i am a noob and have a 3.50 FW psp. The only cool thing i have on my psp is DIGIPLAY. So forgive me if im wrong...

but maybe...

did anyone notice that at the end when the guy was navigating through the psp to show us the FW that when he went to the video and photo section, NO MEMORY STICK INDICATOR came up. The picture of the mem stick that shows how much memory your psp has never came up. So i guess it could be possible that there was no stick in it. Or they could have switched them. But i could be VERY wrong because i am a noob and have a 3.50 FW psp. The only cool thing i have on my psp is DIGIPLAY. So forgive me if im wrong...

BS

yeah this vid is very sketchy to begin with cuz not only are they hiding the fact that the mem stick activity is concealed but also that when it booted it didnt ask to restore the settings back to normal like when we do a clean downgrade, my guess is this is another hoax to make people think they know what they are doing but without any "concrete" proof, ill pass this on to the recycling bin. my 2 cents
by - 2007-06-26 13:44:09
PEOPLE

It also can be the battery he switched, note that the yellow thing in the back of the psp battery leads to the system firmware.

Yeah, because you can write a downgrader based entirely on the on-screen output shown in a video.
by - 2007-06-26 15:26:07
a fake more...

at the beginning he browse threw the XMB and if you stop at the right time you see that the web browser is missing. Thats a fake. ((greets from austria ;) ))

That'd be great

If Demonoid wasn't down right now
by - 2007-06-26 15:45:29
hmmm..

This is cool and all, and I can't really tell if it's real or not, there are good points for it being real and not, it's definitly interesting enough to watch. What I don't understand is that how in the creation of the OE's and the Hen's, something like this could have been missed? I am not an expert, but I would think tat this kind of code would at least have been noticed, even if not decrypted, or known, at least noticed by someone. Or would this "diagnostic mode" only come up with the help of that special battery? It didn't look like he was putting that battery in, but he could have been, since it was mostly hidden. The one thing I find is that even at the Sony Store, they won't do anything about wrecked PSP's (a friend of mine bricked his PSP and we were trying to see if they would un-brick it somehow) and they just said that with a warranty, they could replace it, whithout it, we couldn't do anything, we even asked about sending it to the factory, but they said that only buying a new one was possible (btw, we masked it to look like the screen had cracked, we actually cracked to not seem obvious it was a brick, we had a replacement screen and were going to make the change later) so to have this kind of thing and not use it, even for a slight profit, even by the actual Sony Store, seems like kinda a waste of money, so if it does exist then Sony is not being smart on how they use it
by - 2007-06-26 16:23:49
Sony

if this is real, SONY is stupid
by Travisweet3 - 2007-06-26 18:02:42
what i think

I think it could infact be real, if you look carefully, after looking at his system info and w/e, he unplugs the power cable for a second which completely shuts off the psp right away (since there is no battery in the back) so there is no chance of it starting up on the web browser or something. After he inserts the "magic battery" he does not touche the power button, instead he taps the L button and a second later the psp pops on with that program
by - 2007-06-26 18:13:26
emulated

I say it's a fake. After getting the psp out of the case, it didn't go through the initial set-up. also, it was recovered back to 2.71, which dev-hook can be ran from. last, there was no memory card icon when he booted 2.71 so he could have simply been emulating it, then formated the memory stick for 3.5, then it required the redo of the initial setup when it got back to 2.71.
by - 2007-06-26 20:18:29
its real

you can tell that when they first took it out of the box that they have already got into it, and for the rest of it and from what ive researched on it i would say it is real

Chinese selling special battery http://auction1.taobao.com/auction/0/item_detail-0db1-e4645dabe27209808ece77ed815064f1.jhtml

asd

Theres alot of better things to do in china than edit a video n make it look real unless they plan to sell that crap, plus the memory stick light could be easily edited.

HaHa

It is very simple but inorder for you guys and girls to figure this out...you need to stop being dumbass's. Stop and think about the programming of the psp. I took two looks at that video and did it my self, but that still doesn't mean that I will tell anyone of you people how it is done for what so that you can gain off of someone's behalf...you guys are funny, but I give you a hint try accessing the bios system, then will you learn something. Notice did not press the ON when attempting to do this act. Also it is agianst the LAW to comment this CRIMES. Whom ever made this video is made it the way the made is so that they would not get cought, but ALL hackers must go down. You people stop attempting others ideas and come out with your own because if you are tring to do what someone else is doing you might get caught and do the time that that person should be doing for there own ideas. And then it was not even his idea. the programmers of the system put that there so if any time they need to jump code...they can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OTA Downgrading

I have a feeling this guy found a way to downgrade the psp over the air(OTA) through wifi, but he didnt want anybody to see the lighting so nobody gets any ideas.Maybe for this downgrader you have to have the wifi on but he doesnt want anybody to know.who knows......elaborate
by jnwpse - 2007-07-07 03:30:03
video

It might be a video and when you play anything off the memory stick the memory stick light will light up in a certain way. The whole thing is probably just a video pre-edited with photoshop cs3
