Placasoft from Team Emergency Exit has been working on his project “PSPdualBoot” for a long time. Did he just stop? The answer is NO. Yesterday, Placa gave me a chance to actually test the current progress – very impressive.

The original objective of this project is to automatically launch a homebrew when turning on your PSP. But still, the users should have the ability to choose not to load the homebrew on startup and hit the original XMB interface. The users should be able to select which homebrew they want to launch.

As we can imagine, the project needs to modify our firmware to take effect. Currently Placa is working on an installer for installing and customizing the Auto-Start service, so I had to test it under MPHÂ’s Firmware Launcher. I downloaded the decrypted 1.50 firmware and installed it properly on my memory stick, then applied PlacaÂ’s patch on it. After that, I started the firmware launcher. When seeing the prompt of the launcher, I turned on my WiFi switch and then pressed X button to start the emulation.

The launcher started to load the system, as the memory stick access light was blinking. Then the PSP startup video was played, the background with wavy lines was shown. But I never had a chance to see the old XMB interface before the screen went black after 2 seconds. Then, the access light continued to blinkÂ… and blink. After several seconds, PSP-OSS was loaded (Yay!).

The homebrew worked fine, but I got bored very soon. I just quitted PSP-OSS and modified the settings to load another homebrew. This time I picked PSIX, maybe the very first one you want to load on startup. And yeah, it loaded perfectly.

Placa told me he didnÂ’t think there was anything that PSPdualBoot couldnÂ’t load. Any homebrew you have in your mind that works on 1.50 can be started automatically with PSPdualBoot.

Placa is now working on an installer. This installer will enable you to customize which homebrew you want to load on startup, and then apply the patch to your firmware. He will focus especially on safety, to make sure you wonÂ’t brick your PSP with it (as long as you donÂ’t cut the power of the PSP by yourself).

I also discussed with Placa about something else, like if this can be used to penetrate the parental control of some PSP games. He said very likely. Maybe I was too curious, this function sounds really redundant. :P

The release date is still unknown according to Placa. Maybe just like the famous Carmark said “It’s done, when it’s done.”

Who knows, when this dual boot program becomes available for download and installation things may become slightly more interesting.

This program is going to be the first homebrew program to not only write to the firmware but also be executed from it, meaning there is the possibility of one of these shell programs being eventually developed into a separate operating system, or at the very least it brings those who are interested in hacking the PSP's firmware one step closer to their goal. Also, when shell programs can be started automatically when turning the PSP on, there will be greater interest in developing them to make them more stable and functional.

At any rate I will definitely look forward to what develops next, at any rate things can only get better from here. That is, until SONY releases their next firmware update and half of the people who have not updated yet will do so to try out the shiny new features.

I love where this is going! Team EE, keep up the great work! I am excited to see how this helps homebrew OS's become much more seemlessly intergrated.

Great way to start the month!

:P besides gta on 1.50 is old news!

Hey its already easy shyt to pass parental locks, just get into IR Shell and hit left, to load inserted UMD, or use FlashMod... ETC.

As for the dual boot, we need to confirm if it prevents XMB bricking...

For example when testing the dual boot, with MPH fw loader, corrupt the xmb file, topmenu_plugins .prx , somehow. See if hte homebrew still loads.

Also corrupt various files such as the asura effect. And the gameboot.

If this prevents bricking, its gunna be teh awesomest!

( All u need is it to load a special flash repairing system... )

u uys here have to not take things so seriously, geez. he said "JK :P"

anyway, I would be hesitant to use this, but I cant wait to see it.

Now all we need is a PSP Shell that works well enough to be used as the main OS

so what exactly is the point? loading homebrew after setting the dualboot thing and then turning off the psp is not a lot faster than just loading it from the menu.

could this app mean that you can have 2 firmwares? it would be nice to have a 2.6 version and a 1.5 on the same psp. or is this all just a way to get psix to load a little faster?

i hope this opens up a possibility for a custom firmware all together.

yea for sure: when this evaluates to a program that lets you choose the firmware at startup with an easy installer function and no bricking it will be the greatest homebrew ever made ( i know there is a firmware loader but it doesn't let you use all functions of the firmwares and it's difficult to install)

But i'm just dreaming i think

Will this work for later firmare versions? If it's an entirely new way of booting homebrew, it's possible that the 2.X firmwares have no security against it. When the press release of this app first appeared here they were saying something about being able to run homebrew AND have all the features of a later firmware.

if you want to get around the parental lock all you have to do is reset your system settings. it will restore the default PW (0000).

# Anti-bricker?Guest 2006-03-03 06:44
I know, to make an anti-psp-bricker you can make the dual boot load an eboot (X) that loads another eboot(eg. psix) and if it fails to load, then (X) can load the original XMB and if that fails, it can search for firmware on the memory stick and load it from there, so you can upgrade (i know, its not good to do that) or load an eboot that can reinstill the files needed to the flash.

I might be wrong about this, but its just a thought.
