Mathieulh done with PSP custom firmware, talks of homebrew on PS3, 360 |
The PSP homebrew community has seen a certain number of great programmers out there, Mathieu Hervais of Noobz being one of them. 22 years old and still a student, he is know by most in the PSP homebrew scene as Mathieulh. Today, the Exophase Forums has posted an interview they've conducted with the homebrew developer and a couple of interesting tidbits surfaced.
Now in light of hearing about Dark AleX leaving the PSP scene for good (supposedly due to possible issues with Sony), it seems that Mathieulh might be following suit. Not that he's leaving-leaving, but he says he'll quit working on what he's know for most: custom firmware.
Mathieulh: I will continue to be in N00bz and perhaps help a few friends of mine developing softwares but I am done with anything related to custom firmwares.
This bit of news might prove to be a slight hitch at homebrew development, to say the least. However, our sullen feelings were quickly replaced by something from out in left field. Homebrew for the PS3 and 360? Is he leaving PSP custom firmware for bigger fish to fry? Right after giving the answer above, he was asked whether he would like to tinker around with other next-gen consoles.
Mathieulh: The Xbox360 or the PS3 (I am not intested into the wii for homebrews and I do not take part in piracy either). I am more interested on the Xbox360 though as the system is way better to develop on (unlike what Sony tries to claim with the ps3). I like the fact that the cpu uses real cores (and not SPUs) and that each of those can handle 2 threads at a time. Although the PS3 would probably be way easier to hack than the 360, the 360 installed userbase is greater. Beside SCE claim that they will persecute anyone finding an exploit on their console (which is still not illegal in certain places such as the EU) so I rather not take my chances on it. Still kudos to Microsoft for their work in securing the 360 kernel, this is what I call a real security (and a real challenge for hackers)

i only used D_A custom FW till he left, now i have m33 which is kinda cool (remote play via internet FTW!) so i don't now this guy or have used his firmwares. Maybe they were great, but oh well. Hope you do well in in which ever system you decide to develop for, and thank god for not bothering with that nintendo toy.... good luck!
can buy burnt 360 games you can play, so I guess the 360 was easier to crack than the dufus claims.

I don't care what he manages to do to the 360 I'll never bow down to anyone especially for some console hacking. I had a great amount of respect for Dark_Alex and still do but I never kissed his a$$. Some of you people act as if these guys are gods, they're not they are just very talented programmers. I didn't like that Dark_Alex left the scene but I did respect the way he did it. He showed real class he didn't insult anyone or flame the scene or even make a big deal out of it. He just quietly stepped back and let others take the reins.

It is obvious something happened that caused all public figures in noobz to drop custom firmware development basically overnight. CFW is cool and gives you all the extras, but if I can only have 1 wish, it would still be a downgrader to 1.50 mathieulh never mentioned anything about not doing downgraders (yes I RTFA).

those are also modded consoles that some korean stores ONLY sell. Some asian stores dont even bother with legit because they KNOW people will get them modded before buying a single LEGIT game.

As much as I respect his PSP work, that comment about 360 having "real cores" is silly. The most full-featured conventional core this round is actually on Wii; 360 and PS3 both use reduced PPC cores to save die space and increase clock speed. Also, PS3 and 360 both have dual-thread PPC cores, so I don't see how that aspect especially counts as a point in 360's favor. This is to say nothing of the SPEs, which certainly suck for conventional code but scream if you assign tasks properly and optimize for the SPE arch. They may be unconventional, but it's for a reason - a DSP-like arch with dedicated local memory can eat vector/matrix operations like candy, and in a modern 3D game with complex physics, that's going to represent a huge part of the processing load. There's some really impressive stuff on Cell; a few people/groups have done realtime raytracing engines, and of course the Folding@Home results are phenomenal. 360 may have some tech advantages over PS3, but the CPU isn't one of them.

Yeah i had the first post and i completely stand by what i said. F*ck this guy, he told us that he/they would not release the source code for the custom firmware. Either he is siding with Sony or he does not give a sh*t about the homebrew community. Either way you will not be missed. BTW why is qj kissing this guys ass, he is talking about xbox, not the psp.
You don´t know for the Realtime Raytracing they used 3 PS3´s and the PS3 have not real cores like an PC.
I'll get flamed for this but who gives a sh-t...Hackers like this guy have done nothing but help bury the PSP. In the beginning of the PSP life cycle developers were looking forward to working on the handheld, but thanks to f-cks like this guy alot of them pulled back when homebrew and piracy exploded on the scene. I've seen articles on the net and on magazines like Game Informer where developers blamed homebrew and piracy for their dislike of the PSP. I can only hope Sony does away with all these jerk offs and cleans up the PSP scene for developers to work. So that's my rant, if you don't like it or agree with it....well...F-ck you and F-ck your mother! Peace B-tches!

These so called "Devs" or "hackers" need to stop being lazy and decide on a much knowledge demanding console. I dare you accept the challenge and develop something for the Ps3. Stop thinking on what is easier to develop for, because the chances will become slim when newer technology is implemented for the newer consoles down the line. It's better to start now. I'll be willing to bet $100 to any dev or hacker that can prove me wrong. And I'm not talking about a "Hello World" or "Pong". I'm talking about something that will be useful to all of us homebrew lovers without the need for linux to run any of these. Real developers strive for a challenge, and if you backup on this, you got no right to call yourselves "Devs".

I think you're all missing it. The DVD drive was hacked; it's firmware has been modded, this is no secret. However, there here hasn't been a single exploit found in the kernel yet, meaning while copied games can be played, there is no possible way to run any custom applications yet.
