libtiff Vulnerability gives hope for a new GTA-less PSP Exploit! |

Our PSP forums have been abuzz lately with the talk of a possible new exploit centered around a libtiff vulnerability. Discussion started in our Developer's Dungeon when a message was relayed from NOPx86 stating that he'd managed to crash the PSP using this method. As those of you who follow these things know, a crash doesn't always mean an open door to an exploit.But after a cumulative 60 hours of work and research put in by Skylark and psp250 (with a little help from Fanjita), they can confirm that NOPx86's method is indeed valid and opens the door for a new exploit. They have confirmed that it will work on 2.0 and 2.01 PSP's, and could potentially work on firmware as high as 2.80 - although at this moment, this is unconfirmed.
But even if this only works on lower firmwares, it will usher in the age of GTA-less homebrew for 2.01+ PSP's, which will be a welcome change for homebrew enthusiasts.
Work and research on applying this exploit into a publicly usable form will take some time, and it will take even more time to put this to use on PSP's with higher firmware, but there definitely are possibilities. As always, we'll keep you up to date on this developing story as soon as more information becomes available.

I have 2.6 and in a cuple days I'm getting my 1 Gig memory stick, I'm just to lazy to downgrade to 1.5 and use devhook, cuz I like to have my atrac 3 plus music and my browser handy [and I'm a bit affraid to be honest] so this means great news to me

I too was worried about using DevHook but it works magically like a charm. You can run all of your favorite homebrew, and with a simple press of a button, your PSP functions as a true 2.71 with the web browser, RSS audio, ATRAC, AVC, Location Free, and everything fully intact. Press a button again and your PSP reverts back to 1.50. Good stuff. I just wish there was 2.80 support.
I look forward to advancements in this new exploit. My 2.80 PSP would love to play some NesterJ Wi-Fi with my 1.50 PSP.
no doubt sony is already on this and making a new securtiy patch
should have have kept it top secret if they crack up to 2.8 then it aint working on 3.0 O-well long live 1.5

If this works on 2.80, i promise never to upgrade to anymore firmware updates....whatever "great features" that sony might put on the next update is nothing like the ability to use your PSP as everything from a remote to a N-64 Emulator....So i'm praying that the LIBTIFF exploit will work at least partially on 2.80.

Can you actually downgrade firmware 2.80?
What's with all the excitement over 3.0 and its falsely so-called "emulator" which will be nothing more than ports of ps1 games that will cost money to buy even if one already owns that game... and so what if the PSP 3.0 can control the PS3, a system that many people won't buy at release day because of the price. The homebrew community has added wayyy more functionality to 1.5 PSP's than Sony has to 2.7+ PSP's. I guess that shows how much Sony really cares about their customers. But that's old news lol.
I doubt it's a big deal if Sony finds out about this. If they do, we'll find another exploit in their higher firmwares. It's a fair game as long as Sony doesn't play dirty and try to sue over it.

wow,i cant wait to see edison carters cheat device on firmware 2.80, gta:lcs is great,and so i used it pretty much all the time until i updated my psp without knowing anything about the exploit disabled,i think this could really get more people onto their psps again,i know i will,i knew that someone would crack the V2.71+ security,and with this,it means we can go into multiplayer and float on away with the water level at whatever you want,man,i loved the cheatdevice,and i still do,long live the cheatdevice!

I have a 2.80 psp, but if this works, I will downgrade to 1.5 and run Devhook. Hopefully devhook will be able to emulate 3.0.
I love how all 2.8ers want a downgrader. I mean come on, why would you be dumb enough to upgrade. It's not like anywhere sells psps with the fw already. You guys are idiots!

Everyone deserves a second chance, or a third/forth in some cases. Some people would have upgraded during the homebrew 'slump' there was a while ago and slowly gone up through the firmwares through lack of faith in the appearence of downgraders/exploits.
Now there's loads more great homebrew proggies out there (N64 emu on it way, almost full speed GBA emu just popped up, new version of IRshell and new devhook versions).
So stop the flaming all you sexually confused people...
Don't release the exploit publically until Sony releases 3.0, with the PS1 emulation! W00t!

Hey td, you should not upgrading, because rela soon it will be DevHook v0.47 wit 2.80 Emulation. You don´t need to upgrade!!!
You also can use the next version of DevHook (with 2.80 Firmware Emulation) . It is better then upgrade!
P.S.: I´m comin´from Austria/Europe and the official time is: 6:17 PM!!!

Alright, so what are we possibly looking at here? Will it be possible to run homebrew games in kernal mode with this exploit? I have a 2.0 PSP so I'm not too incredibly concerned unless this exploit could make it possible for me to enjoy everything that somebody with a 1.0 or 1.5 PSP enjoys.

The PSP-Firmware in Europe Shops is FW 1.52 (cannot use homebrew) but u can update to FW 2.00 and then downgrade to 1.50 (homebrew is usable)! Where do u come from???

Hey number 66. If you have 2.0 and want to experience all the homebrew capabilities of a 1.50 then why don't you just downgrade? Hell at 2.0 you don't even need GTA to downgrade.

I think it's amazing how you guys are able to find exploits, and use them to your advantage to make things like downgraders. I'm sure you all know that Sony watches all PSP news websites. As soon as Sony sees this article, they will try to patch this exploit for the future 3.0 update. I think you guys that make downgraders shouldn't release the source code or even describe how the exploit works. Even if nothing comes out of this new exploit any time soon, Sony WILL still try to patch it. If a downgrader IS made any time soon, you guys should keep the source code, and other important information a secret, and just release the actual downgrader application. This is just a suggestion, and i'm sure you guys probably don't care.
Never announce exploits until it's fully working! Sony is sooo gonna patch this now...

I updated to 2.8 earlier on and it doesn't look much different to 2.71 really. I flashed my Psp back to 1.5 now so it doesn't really matter. I have to say I hope something comes out of this exploit, it will be great. Either that or hopefully Epsilon will release a compatible 3.0 version so I can have the features of 1.5 on 3.0 along with the Ps1 emulator.

number 84, sony can make homebrew games for psp because the files are signed by sony, and it would be almost IMPOSSIBLE to get the signature code. 1.0 is the only FW that can run code that is unsigned.

Now that these very highly talented coders have found an explot similar to overflow.tiff, It might now be very long before I can finally play all the cool new emulators that have been developed since I've upgraded to 2.80.
