How to find a Homebrew Friendly version of GTA:LCS - Updated |

With the news of kernel mode for 2.5/2.6 and the release of a 2.5/2.6 downgrader, I'm sure many of you have already downgraded. But what about those unfortunate souls who have a patched version of GTA? Well, here's how to tell whether your version of GTA is patched or not, useful to find out if you're about to buy GTA:Liberty City Stories in the shops. You can identify whether you have the correct version of GTA by simply using the spine of the UMD case.
The following are for the EU/UK versions of the game:
GTA: LCS (Pre 2.6 version):
ULES-00151#
GTA: LCS (Patched 2.6 Version):
ULES-00151#2
As you can tell, the actual ULES numbers only vary by the added "2" on the end of the code. However, the serial number which you can find underneath the ULES number on the spine of the UMD case. Another slight variation that is also on the spine of the UMD case. The18 logo in a red circle is present in the pre 2.6 version, but in the patched 2.6 game the 18 red circle logo isn't present on the spine.

Update: It appears that the serial numbers differ country by country, so please go by the ULES/ULUS codes only!
QJ's Jamie M. has confirmed that North American GTA versions with "ULUS 10041" aren't patched, QJ's Jamie M. has confirmed that his own North American GTA version with "ULUS 10041 - UPDL 0048501A 5" isn't patched. so I can guess that any other version number would be a patched version and wouldn't run the eLoader or any other forum of homebrew.
Update 2: Qj's very own blogger, cyanide, has confirmed that there are 2 versions of "ULUS 10041".
ULUS 10041 Patched - Contails UPDL 010050 on the UMD.
ULUS 10041 Unpatched - Contains UPDL 0048501A 5, plus IFPI L332 in very small letters.

Update 4, 5...?: Wowolaf has reported a version of GTA he bought from BestBuy, matching Jim420's image and the description of a compatable GTA version (10041 / made in 2005) but it IS NOT compatable with homebrew.

For the EU/UK version the serial number can't be used to determine which version. I just checked my case. My GTA is unpatched, I got it before the patched version was even out. But it has the same serial code as you have posted for the patched version, so I guess it could work the other way arouns as well.
The ULES number is right though.

I have an unpatched version of GTA. i got mi GTA before the patched version was out and the spine of the case doesnt have the wierd 18logo or wtv and the number is ULUS 10041.......and its UNPATCHED... so the information you gave us is wrong for the north america part. I dunno about the EU/UK version of GTA though
I regularily switch between 1.50, 2.00, 2.50, 2.60 and i'm currently trying out 1.00.

Im sure if the 1st GTA: LCS had that exploit then chances are other games out there have them. I think remember hearing talks about something similar in the Tony Hawk game. Anyway, my point is... once the unpatched versions of GTA are unavailable, we might be able to turn to other games that may have the same exploit. Thanks for the info!

well my gta is unpaytched(i baught it months ago in december) and i noticed that mine had the liberty city thing under grand theft auto on the spine.
First Cheatdevice, then Tetris by Fanjita, then Eloader, then 2.5/2.6 downgrader....you've been good to me GTA

Why does the boxart show what looks like a Dolby Pro Logic II Symbol? Also if you want to know if it is patched or not look at the back of the box. Look at the blurb talking about copyright and that this game is fictional etc. Surely the patched version will have the ©2005 Rockstar Games updated to ©2006 Rockstar games? Can someone with the patched version test this?

I recently bought a brand-new, still sealed GTA:LCS on ebay for about $20. The number on the spine of the box is "ULUS 10041." When I first bid on the auction, I intended to use it for the eLoader thing on my 2.60 PSP. After ordering it, I traded my PSP for my cousin's 1.50 PSP, because he's too little to know what homebrew is. When I got the game in the mail, I put it in my 1.50 PSP. The game contains a 2.60 update. I can't play it, because it keeps asking me to update to 2.60. I tried launching it with Devhook 0.41d, 0.42a and 0.42b. Devhook emulates fw 2.50. Therefore, when I tried to boot the UMD with Devhook, making sure to use all the proper settings, it wanted me to upgrade (since Devhook's 2.50 is still less than the required 2.60). I also used a program called "Genesis UMD Launcher 2.6," whose sole purpose is to make 2.60-requiring UMDs play on 1.50 PSPs. The program kept freezing, and didn't work. Does anyone know how to get the 2.60-requiring-GTA:LCS to work on a 1.50 PSP? If anyone knows how, please tell me. I'm desperate.

What a luck!! I went out yesterday to buy GTA to specifically downgrade my PSP. Today I read this article and discover that I bought a patched version :( what a waste of 50 Euros that was and talk about bad luck.
Oh well, at least the shop gave me a day to exchange the game if I didn't want it.
I bought 3 GTA UMDs ULUS 10041.
But all 3 are patched version.

1) read the article.
2) saw that SLUS 10041 is supposedly "unpatched"
3) bought a copy matching SLUS 10041
4) popped it in
5) was prompted to upgrade to 2.6 firmware

The US version has absolutely NO WAY to distinguish between patched and unpatched. This article is completely misleading.
I just bought a GTA which is printed with ULUS 10041, Manufactured in U.S.A.
However, this is a patched copy with 2.6 upgrader
Just bought GTA LCS from Wal-Mart in TX. The spine of the box says 10041. The updater is 2.6! No help, except that the 2.6 patched version seems to be a darker brown on the UMD. If you see two shades, pick the lighter. Best I have.
My unpatched version of GTA has the pic of the gun on the UMD, you must have gotten your info wrong, plus mine is a US copy too, and i know it works with the eloader.
My GTA is ULUS 10041 and is NOT patched so this info is not true.
Glad they updated the info with the red text, the picture's aren't very clear though. They have the euro unpatched version next to an american patched version (or so i assume, as the "patched" umd they have pictured is the same as the one i bought 7+months ago)
Anyone with the patched american version care to upload links to images of their UMD and case (front back and spine)? if anyone does ill check every single inch for any differences to the unpatched one i have.
if you are buying GTA LCS brand new, chances are that they have been replaced by rockstar and sony... just like how GTA SA got pulled off after the hot coffee thing. The shelves have patched versions NOW only... if you rent the game or buy it used from eb games or ebay u may be lucky. BEST bet is to stay way from buying brand new copies!

I think a lot of this "guide" is very misleading. Both of the pictures are comparing an EU version of the game to a US version. I know I have an unpatched version of GTA, cause I have been using it for homebrew for months before I downgraded, but this is very confusing to me.

If you have the UMD Cover of the so called "patched" version is does NOT!!! mean that it is patched..

I got an UNpatched version from Gamefly (free 21day trial through ign, just google "gamefly trial ign") - Gun logo disc artwork, with text "Manufactured in U.S.A ULUS 10041, UPDL 004850" on top.
I have an unpatched version and it is the red UMD with a gun. I didn't even know they made another UMD cover for it.

My disk (Canadian) has ULUS 10041.UPDL 004850 on it with the origional logo with the gun and is NOT patched, got it from the pawn shop for like $30, mine has an "M" raiting not 18+ on the top.
I have the UMD with the gun on it and I used it with eLoader just fine - you might want to seperate this from the patched/unpatched differential.
I'm going to downgrade my psp today from 2.6->1.5 and does anyone want to buy the GTA:LS unpatched version off me.
I looked at thier pics and describ of the patched one i have that exact same look but its 2.0 and works with eloader. I got mine in dec. when the game was still pretty much new and the exploit wasn't even out. My UMD says ULUS 10041 UPDL 010050 so whoever put this crap better edit it again, bc thats not the best way to determine that its patched or not. All i can say is if it requieres 2.6 its patched. Only if we knew if the game was 2.0 or 2.6 on the outside box does it matter I think.

K i looked at the pictures on the spines of the patch and the unpatched zoomed up close enough to read the patched on on the pic says ULUS 0029B (zoom in via paint) the other one is to pixellated to read but if im not mistaking UMDS in the US never had the back of a unpatch with the 18+ whn GTA came out. Also the screenshot of the unpatched one is a Eurpoe one it has region 2 coding on it,not also not sure if the patched one is legit or not. Anyone that has the 2.6 please type what the spine says. if you look at the copyright dates if it says 2005 its unpatched if it says 2006 its patched easy as that to figure it out. They had to redo the copyright with the patched one bc the code was changed a tad bit meaning it had to get checked up on and verfied and the new patched one had to have the new copyright added.

i dont know if anybody has ever tryed to recognise this but take a good look at the pictures of the box covers, notise the ingame screens on the back are diffrent for the patched and non patched versions? yet another way to tell even if they have the same code on the side!
Thats kinda strange......my unpatched version of gta has the gun on it.....is the other one from the uk????ive seen it in the downgrader video.QUESTION:could a hacker like fanjita take the data that contains the gta exploit from the UNPATCHED ISO, and somehow code that data to work with either the unpatched gta with firmware 2.7+,or could he take the exploit data and make a program for it to work with the patched GTA umd on 2.7+????And is the savedata hack patched alltogether with any umd or just gta??? im pretty sure if this is not the case, 2.7+ users have a chance with a more buggy game like Vice city stories.It should be a large of a game thus more buggy.
I have the UMD with a brown bg and a gun, i use cheat device and eloader all the time!!
I bought my copy a week after it it came out. US version. and the spline doesn't look like either of those. Mine has the usual Grand Theft Auto style text and then the red Liberty City Stories part is smaller and directly under the GTA text, not further down the spine as in both those pics.
Mine has the gun on it, but i got it back in december so its not patched.
I have the ULUS10041 version and I can use the GTA ELoader on it.
yeah same here, my umd image is the one with the gun and i got in december as well and it works great. image check is totally wrong.

MY GTA LCS looks like the " Patched Version" and still works. the unpached vershion lookes like the EU/JP game not the US one. I bought my GTA LCS the day it came out in the USA and it looks like the "PAtched Versoin". total BS this whole thing it total BS. The only way to rly tell is if it requires 2.6.
My UMD looks like the patched one... I've had it since release... so this isn't right for US versions I guess.
I bought the brown disc with the gun on the front on the cover and it isnt patched its box cover reads ULUS 10041 and something else reads UPDL 004850.

Mine has the big gun on the UMD and it wasnt patched. I got GTA because of the Eloader =p and it worked! Ive been using Eloade for awhile till the Downgrader came. And i am happily downgraded ^_^.

i have the disc that is brown and the case that does not say 18, so my game should be patched, but it isnt and i bought it brand new the week it came out, so this guide sucks

I think they are right and im glad they had this article...because that raises the awareness of the patched version and they are getting closer to figuring out what is and isnt.
im useing the gta with the gun on it to load eloader who ever said that this verusin was patched is fucckkkin dumb oh by the way i can down grade to 1.5 did it then update back to 2.6 it was to much of ahasle to load devhook all the time when iload gta i can get beer or light asmoke then eload menu up and running only thing i can see to downgradeing is to steal games im not poor so i just buy them. any way im just saying any body who wants a psp that can be downgraded to1.5 will trade for a 2.6 fw i only use snes dgen bor mods all with can be played on a 2.6 fw so if you would like to trad post a responce can prove it can be down graded to 1.5.

You guys have some info backwards i have gta:lcs uslus 10041 updl 010050 and its not patched iv used edison carters cheat device on this thiong for over 5 months
i have the version that your syaing is patched but mine is not patched is reqiuers 2.00 update and it runs the eloader
I bought my gta when it first came out and it is unpatched but it has all of the things mentioned for it being patched so this doesnt work well.
Note: I have the 10041 and it's UNPATCHED.
Just another person here to say that the pics are misleading and will not be 100% accurate for everyone. I bought GTA:LCS on the day of release here in Canada. It looks exactly like the "patched" pics above, but it definitely is not patched. The cover art is the same, black all the way to the bottom of the back, and the UMD is brown with the gun and no red 18+ logo.
The spine of the UMD case says ULUS10041 and the UMD says UPDL 004850.
Dude, I bought GTA:LCS on PSP day of launch in the US... and my UMD has the picture of that very gun and no 18+ logo. It can't possibly be patched FIRST BATCH of release.

My GTA looks like the patched version but it is not. It has ULUS 10041. UPDL 010050 on the UMD. They say that was the patched version yet I was able to load up the eloader and downgrade.

MY GTA DISC IS UNPACTHED FROM THE RELEASE DATE AND IT HAS THE BROWN BACKGROUND AN THE GUN ON IT.
Im assuming that the other disc is probably the UK version or soemthign as almost every game has a different design for every country/region.
Trying to distinguish the two apart is like trying to distinguish a patched GTA SA disc from an unpatched one. You wont know until you play the game. Better off buying used.
HERE IS MY SUGGESTION TO ANYONE HWO STILL NEEDS AN UNPATCHED GTA UMD:
Rent GTA from somewhere like blockbuster. If it is patched, you can go back the next day, say it doesnt work and they will switch it for another one which might not be patched. ;) and if its unpacthed, go ahead and downgrade or whatever. And if you want to keep the GTA, you can go buy GTA, and replace it. Unless of course the new one you bought was also unpatched. ;)
So this method gives you the insurance when you buy the game.

In the box scans, you are comparing the UK box (top) and the prerelease box art that was thrown over the internet (bottom) no actual bought will look like that because it doesnt not have a barcode whcih lead to the whole thing being rearranged.
And again with the UMDs, you are comparing the UK disc and the US disc.
It just was by chance that the US disc that this guy bought was a patched one.
No company would change the disc art for a patched version.

Entirely wrong. I have one without the 18+ logo on it and theres a gun on my umd and it is not patched because I got it at christmas. Do not listen to this.
The two pictures of the patched and unpatched games aren't correct. I have the one that is supposedly patched and I guarantee you that mine isn't.

The picture on my UMD was a gun but it was unpatched because i downgraded with it yesterday

So to clairify The USA version ULUS10041 UPDL 010050 is not patch as long as its a 2.0 version. As for ppl buying it look at the copyrightdates as well as the pictures and check. If its copyrighted 2005 its unpatched. The pictures way works as well but its kinda hard to compair it in the store usless you gonna print it out. And on another note not sure if its true i heard that EB games might be taking unpatched version off the shelves. New or Used. Don't quote me on that i heard it from a friend.

I can verify that I have the case that's listed as unpatched, and I have a patched copy.
I'm in the US -- If that case posting was only true of EU/UK, then disregard my oversight.
But if that was meant for US users, watch out: I purchased GTA with the case shown above as unpatched, and it contained a GTA version requiring update 2.6.

Are you sure that you are using the eloader correctly? Not trying to insult you, but that could be a possablilty. It contains 2.0 FW I highly doubt its patch bc everyone that has reported it patched had a 2.6. Your the first case. To test it try using the newest version of cheat device, eloader is a tab bit more difficult.

I got a US copy of GTA that matches the non-patched picture.
But its patched, so qj.net maybe you should just pull those pics etc. before more people buy into it and waste their money.

i just felt that i should clarify that my copy of GTA is a US copy...

Just wondering, how many people stole their GTA from Blockbuster? I know it sounds weird, but I'm a little apprehensive about renting it, since some people may have stolen all of the unpatched versions...
they could just be packing random versions of gta into randomly labeled boxes with random cover art, did u guys ever consider that?

I have a ULUS 10041, UPDL-010050A1 and it works with eloader. This post says I have a patched version but it's not.
I have a copyright 2005. 10041 UPDL010050. (first series of GTA) Eloader works just fine.
My friend just bought a gta with the EXACT SAME code on the umd/spine everything. However, it came packaged with fw2.60 not 2.00 and eloader DOESNT work.
Sounds lke rockstar is printing old #s to make it imposible to tell now.
I second that. I have tested an Asian version of ULUS 10041 with UPDL-010050A1 and IFPI L332.
It worked on a PSP1003 part number PSP with 2.50 factory firmware.

Just brought game this weekend, game box spine does not show #2, but look on the umd and check that first as my disk has the #2. so please do not go by the cover, go by the umd details

I today also bought GTA to downgrade, and looked for the 'unpatched' version.
I bought one with the right pictures on the backside, the UMD has a black background and a red 18+ logo, but the update is 2.60!!!!!!
So also, patched!!!!!!!! !!!!.......

UK stores tend to leave the cases empty. Having a case with the corect serial isn't much use as they will give you a patched UMD when you take it to the counter.
You'll have to buy second hand now if you are in the UK.
I just bought a cover looking exactly like it should ... meaning all pictures are correct and inside on the disc the rec 18 rated circle is there too .... ALL was correct - but then when I came how I saw that the text ULES-00151#2 was on the CD and not the ULES 00151# (without the "2") ... so the game I bought is useless !
A lot of money wasted .... I am sad now :-(

You can't decide if gta is the patched 2.6 version just by looking at the case cover, you have to look at the umd disc.
got ules00151 on the cover but on umd it's ules00151 #2.
I own two copies of Gta:Lcs for my psp. both of them read on the spine ULUS 10041, and on the UMD UPDL d10050. both of them are Unpatched. this forum should be edited, because as you can see from the comments, the forum is confusing many people. enough said
