Hello world: PSP Go hacked, proof of concept video released |

The one responsible for this hack is FreePlay, who you may know for his work on the Sparta SDK and his recent run-ins with Team Mack. Before you go out an buy a Go thinking it's wide open to homebrew, here are a few disclaimers from the dev:
- This was a known exploit that was abandoned because better prospects came along. I did not discover it; I just figured out how to make it work properly. Better hackers than I likely figured it out way before I did; they just never used it for anything I know of.
- I won't be releasing this or divulging the name of the game involved. It's a proof-of-concept, and it may become more developed privately, but until there's a worthwhile reason to release it it'll stay private. I'd prefer that Sony not patch it before it becomes really useful.
- It's user-mode only, meaning no flash modification, no piracy, no advanced custom themes, no plugins - none of that. I wouldn't expect anything else to come from it, unless I get some help.
There's no telling if this exploit will eventually be made public, but at least now we have definite proof that the Go isn't homebrew-proof after all. Kudos to FreePlay for a job well done (also, thanks for telling us about it)!

The only way I would ever drop $250 on the PSP Go is if there was a way to put custom firmware on it. It is not worth the price if I can not do this.
I never believe these videos simply because there are too many ways to fake these things. For all we know, this could simply be a video running on a Go.

What is cool about this exploit is that the game being exploited is on the PSN. Meaning if this exploit ever comes through to the user stage it would be easy to get your hands on.
Instead of course buying it for an extravagant price on ebay like some of community did. (GTA:LCS, Wipeout, Lumines, etc...) :-/
The problem is if you have to buy game from PSN Sony could just pull it from the store and have it fixed.

FreePlay, You've once again earned my respect. I may be behind on your previous exploits, but debunking the 6.00 ruse and now this really speaks for you (has anyone else noted that we haven't seen any other videos from them? p0wnd!)
Anyway, I'm still holding onto my 1000 for now, as I hate SCEA for not allowing us to import our old games. Give us reason that we could transfer .cso's onto the 16GB Memory and I may be convinced to shell out or one and keep my old one as a UMD Drive for cheap UMD alternatives.

If he was able to run a Hello World program from a save, which exploits a game, could we not start distrubuting user level hombrew contained in these hacked saves? Boot game, load save, enjoy homebrew? Different save for different homebrew?

If the person who made the exploit, he/she will know how to use it and turn it into a cfw, and even if Sony pulls the game, he/she will convert the exploit to work on another save, then we will have cfw on the go

Two things:
1. Yes, a non-game-based exploit would be better.
2. You actually can convert from one game's exploit to another, sort of. The code for this Hello World and the code for the GripShift Hello World are essentially the same. Once you've got your foot in the door, and you can load a binary file, it won't typically take a lot of tweaking to get the binary working with a new game.
In fact, I think all I had to do was edit two or three lines of text...
its not as easy as that.
not all games are exploitable the same way.
probably the type of person who hex edits a save, gets a crash and thinks its an exploit.
the crash has to create a buffer error that allow arbituary code to run.
not all games do this.
and ones that do need to be exploited in different ways.

My examples so far have all run off of a binary loader which is built into the savedata, similar tp the one used for GripShift. You can just swap binary files in and out of the memory stick.

Also, I did an experiment with PSN content. I bought a game and loaded it on two PSPs. I then copied the game folder from one PSP to another, but left the license files. The game ran, which tells me the game isn't PSP specific. I haven't been able to try it with a game purchased on another account. But is it possible, that if someone were to upload the unpatched game, then Sony patched it, one could buy the patched one for the license file, but replace the game folder with a downloaded unpatched one?

The system has to be activated, via the XMB option or by a PS3. To be activated, you have to connect to the PSN. There's a limit on how many systems can be activated for games per account. The license and game files can be shared between as many systems as you like, but unless the systems are activated, the licenses won't work.
not to be a pessimist but what happens when sony just patches the game when they learn what it is.

well, i'm not a hacker or anything of the sort, but does it matter if the pspgo is hacked? from my perspective, once they crack the baby open, then i guess won't matter if a said game is them patched cause the game would then have been ripped for illegal download. correct me if i'm wrong
you cant ripp a game, it has a licsens on your psp, sony would just update the game so it wouldnt work and anyone who had the game before this would be fine but if you bought it later you would be screwed
i paid $55 for my 256mb ms back then. Now you can get 16gb for that price!
Whether you had anything to do with it or not, thank you for confirming that there is hope for the handheld. User-mode homebrew would be a welcomed addition to my PSP Go, its better than nothing at all.
Don't listen to any of these haters on here, I couldn't create a program for my psp if I was staking something valuable for it. I respect any and all developers/programmers who design for the psp no matter the function or purpose.

I have a pspgo, bought a game, then transfered it to laptop, then decrypted it, then played it on PSP Slim

Yes, I understand the license and 5 PSP limit. I meant, can you buy a game so you have the license, then have that same game, from a DIFFERENT source, work with your license? Thus, buying a patched game, then replacing it with the older, unpatched, same game?
Then if Sony does patch it, people can still buy it regardless than just replace the patched one with the unpatched on their memsticks?
Or is the game encrypted in some manner to the PSN account and not just the license?

I'm glad Freeplay did this and no one else because he understands the severity of non-disclosure when it comes to hacking the PSP.
Think of it this way if you write some software (that ppl have to buy) and you end up updating it with a patch, would you want a way for your software to be free against your will?
like Aces said there is some sort of MD5 check between the game file and the license file that would prevent the license swapping idea

So, I would like to thank Freeplay. This is awesome and if the exploit ever comes out I'm going to actually seriously consider getting a GO.
I'd suggest that everyone checks the unit before leaving the store - I usually do but the store was closing, so I rushed it. My own fault really, but for the money I'm deeply unimpressed by the QC.

Alright, so there is a check on the game data. I wasn't intending getting it for free at any point. You'd still have to BUY the updated one so you'd get a legit license file, I was only wondering if it's possible to use that license with an older version of the same game. Like if it was only attached to some game ID or something. but you said there IS a check on the games actual data so I guess that's a no go.
I was hoping to find a way to dispel fear of Sony patching exploitable games by still buying it and then just using the unpatched game data. Guess a game based exploit just won't be good enough on a PSP go with instant patching.

posting at the same time from 2 accounts is simple. load firefox and ie, sign in on 2 accounts, type your response but don't post it, switch browsers and repeat, then hit send, swap browsers and hit send.
2 messages sent within seconds of each other from 1 person, with 1 computer, and 2 accounts. (i personally have 4 computers in my house though. id assume most households have a desktop and a laptop). Sorry, but i have a hard time not pointing out obvious things to stupid people.
See me and Turk must have a misunderstandin g and see since he thinks Im hating on this overpriced handheld with no new features and what I mean is I know that this has bluetooth and 16 gb of internal memory but this is my perspective on this if this handheld gets hacked and you could get hombrew to work on it.....will anyone develop any new emulators for this thing I mean does it have the power to break new grounds in the hombrew community thats all Im saying see to me if it has the power to play like the N64 better than on the PSP 2000 by all means I would get one....see I am for emulators and homebrew and if there was a way to overclock the handheld to more than 333 mhz or whatever its called then I will get the damn handheld but once again I dont see the point because its got bluetooth and other pointless stuff thats all Im saying so let me say this again I am far from being a hater on this thing sony calls a PSP Go!!!!
It's really simple: You have to patch the game manually, using an "Update Game" menu option. Just never do that
There is a program that lets you unpack PSN games as long as you have a license for them. All you'd need to do is activate the PSN account on a hacked PSP, copy the game over, and run the program.

I payed 100 bucks (Euros) for my 4 gig Stick. When I bought it, the price was a total steal.
Ahh.... good times back then. The community wasn't flooded with total idiots like erique555 or Team Mack. The scene was still very grateful and helped everybody who needed it.
I remember the good old days of switching memory cards, developing, having to change the kernals of games and then custom themes. Then came scandals craziness, and Dark Alex becoming a god to all pirates. Now everyone just bows down to whoever, and starts flaming eachother. Personally, I am looking foward to the Pandora, where development is where it is at. I still love my psp, but a developer just can't live in this craziness where you only get respect if you develop what other people want.
Do you have to start this argument just because you are going to win? Of course this is probably legit, and of course he deserves respect, but the community is going to crap with people, including you, who just want to get in on being the winner. Screw piracy, screw noobs who can't get what they want, what happened to the days when people looked towards homebrew? homebrew has died because no one has any initiative to develop. Sure it will probably get hacked, but what then? WHAT THEN? a short burst of development, and then another patch, and looped all over again. My two cents... just don't screw this up Freeplay, be the man, not the respected martyr .

Well, I will give you my opinion then. First off... this exploit doesn't allow pirated games directly anyways, and the pspgo doesn't have an existing driver to play Umds/isos . Most of the homebrew community has moved on, sadly. If all goes well, we might have lots of fun stuff developed, but most developers are people who just develop on the cheap devices they have. If I were them, I would check out the new Pandora, which runs on linux and a powerful arm processor. The go isn't that much of a revelation, but look at all the people who viewed this article. Hack + iso, to them, and I hope that freeplay will handle this well and allow the homebrew community to be given fresh air, and not feed the pirates in their little holes in the ground while on their computers typing little comments to erupt flame wars.

You say you have the contents of flash0? On another site you said you could also read and write the flash1, yes? Have you done a dump of both after pausing a game and seeing if the paused game data is stored in either one? Also I saw you dumped the version.txt file, can you write that back or not? If you could I would love to fake my version to 6.1 so I don't have to update my 5.7 PSP go to use the PSN.
The saved game data is stored on a totally separate flash drive. The internal storage is referred to in-game as ef0:/ and there's likely a hidden partition just for pause data. I'll have to check.

Gotta say I'm torn on the whole ISO issue, especially with the Go. I'd like to play some of my existing games (which will be up to 43 when Macross Ultimate Frontier arrives) on the machine, which I feel entitled to do since I actually laid out the cash. But I don't want to see the device hit by piracy again because we're starting to get better games.
The problem with the Go at the moment is that even if I wanted to pay for my games again, I couldn't because half of them aren't on PSN, US or UK - Pangya, Dissidia etc are still not on there. I'd also like to play my import games.
That said, I kept my older PSP for that very reason, and I can play my ISO's on that for now. I'd just like to be able to sell a couple of my spare units and keep just the 2000 and the Go, otherwise the Go unit is just a very shiny gadget with Motorstorm and GT to keep me company.
The main reason I picked it up was so I could take advantage of the US store and lower my game import costs (I need something capable of going on the store because my CFW PSP can't).
If only Sony had made good on a UMD legacy program...
So whatever Freeplay decides to do, I'm grateful to him (and others like Team GEN and DaX) for taking some time out to play with the device and keep us updated - torn as I am, I'm fascinated by all this hacking which usually results in a better device - God knows I couldn't do it!

its hardly a product that alot of will be able to get, or even wanna get, or even care about.
yes it might be great for homebrew, but if its too expensive, with no big names making AAA or even A or B grade games for it, it's likely to turn into a lack lustre unit.

freeplay used to ring a bell in my mind during the liberty city stories hack era but im just not interested anymore due to the recent fight with which makes him as childish as the ones he verbally fought with.
kudos to freeplay for bringing this exploit up, it will sure bring those slackers back to being hackers, and those pirates hopeful.
and yeah good thinking on part of freeplay not giving this exploit to everyone just to get recognized, hopes this can eventually lead to full blown iso loader.
but until then dark alex is still the best hacker/psp programmer i have been ever be grateful with, shoutouts to others who helped.

It must be really hard to trust the "hackers" (so yo u call them) to help. Because surely that means sharing code, yes? It would be a mistake. Every "hacker" has released their junk. This is now the only private exploit. A great idea, really. I wish DA did this. But dude trust someone for help and they release it... BAM, Patched. We all know it. eh0 is the device name used for system storage during an update. ef0 is the device name used for system storage during a game. I can copy files to and from ef0, but not eh0.
You laid out the cash for a UMD. Saying you deserve to play it on every new version of the system you buy is like saying you deserve a free copy of every movie you own in every format playable on the players you own.
