eLoader 0.98 "Porter" - 2.0+ Homebrew for PSP without GTA!

We're sure you guys would be really itching to know what Fanjita and Ditlew have been up to lately. There hasn't been an eLoader release for quite some time. The last one, if we recall correctly, was on the 2nd of April which bundled in WiFi support. After that, the 2.XX homebrew scene had been quiet for a while...That is, before the onslaught of downgraders! Although they might have taken a bit of shine off the eLoader with the masses moving to 1.5 firmware for kernel mode homebrew, I know a lot of people who stayed with the eLoader, anticipating great things.

And the Noobz crew isn't one to disappoint. How about I tell you that you can skip buying that GTA UMD for using homebrew on 2.00 and above! Using the recent TIFF exploit in all the higher firmwares, Fanjita and Ditlew have been able to "port" the eLoader to the TIFF exploit. Earlier, homebrew on higher firmwares was run using the savegame exploit by Edison Carter. Now, rather than wasting time by starting GTA every time you want to use homebrew, you can simply go the the Photo section and start the eLoader. Heck, it's actually faster than even 1.0/1.5 homebrew since you don't have to view that "flashing bulbs" video. And the best part is that it doesn't matter whether you have a TA-082 PSP or not, you can play homebrew regardless!

"Noobz are proud to announce the release of the latest eLoader version, 0.9.8, otherwise known as the "Porter" release.

This version brings user-mode homebrew to v2.0-v2.6 PSPs, without the need for Grand Theft Auto. Now, almost all the software that worked with GTA can now be used without it."

This is great news for all those who couldn't find an unpatched GTA UMD anywhere and had to make do with official stuff. Apart from the major re-release, there are two minor changes:

eMenu has been improved in various small ways.
The default menu is now eMenu, the old menu has been retired.

A few people might be curious as to whether you could run the downdater from the eLoader itself, and possibly mess up your PSP. Well, Fanjita has taken care of that too. The downdater won't run; it'll simply fail gracefully without touching your flash. In case you're wondering what homebrew the eLoader runs successfully, you can check out the list of known working homebrew in the PSP Homebrew database. Click the corresponding firmware version below to check out the status of homebrew for that version.

The few things which seem to be missing right now are kernel mode homebrew loading and the ability to use it on FW 2.71 and above.

A few people are wondering what's the difference between kernel mode and user mode. Well, in pure technical terms, the PSP's processor (or other similar processors for that matter) can run in two modes, either user mode or kernel mode. The mode in which the processor is running determines the different functions which you can use. For example, access to the PSP's flash requires kernel mode. That's the main reason why there wasn't a downgrader for 2.01 and above PSPs all this while. Nonetheless, most of the homebrew runs well enough in user mode itself. It's only a few applications like File Assistant and ISO loaders which require kernel mode. You can always check if your favorite homebrew is running well with eLoader using the above links.

You shouldn't be worrying though, the Noobz crew is hard at work getting all the great features into the new eLoader. Here's what they had to say:

I personally can't wait for the possibilities in the future. Kernel mode loading for homebrew looks really really enticing. The upcoming versions of the eLoader might just attract all the homebrew crowd and dethrone the "golden" 1.5 firmware.

Just used the auto installer. Worked great. I already had the GTA version on my psp and it overwrited it perfectly and now works great. One program, the one about giving usb support to the eloader doesn't work, but meh, i never used it anyway. All the emulators worked fine.

The 2.71 downgrader is available. Go and downgrade to 1.5. You can have ALL of the homebrews and kernel access that you want. Use dev-hook if you want to use to 2.71.

Only thing is, what makes this exploit different from the old 2.0 one? I know the 2.0 one was patched, but this exploit sounds awfully similar. Sony really didn't catch the little difference I guess?

my NES and SNES emulators are working perfectly. but the Genesis one crashes. I have to use the GTA exploit to play Genesis Roms for now.

still, this is a wonderful breakthrough! now i don't have to wait 3 minutes to play my NES and SNES!

Excellent work, Fanjita! Speedy as hell! The exploit is barely a week old and you're on top of it. I'm impressed.

For those with Questions - and there are many (just READ people!), see below.

For the Confused -

User Mode vs Kernel Mode - if you've ever worked in a *nix environment, Kernel is roughly equivilant to Root. With Kernel mode, you can write to the onboard flash easily, access the media engine, and gain more control over the CPU and onboard functions. User mode cannot (normally) write to flash, access the media engine, and other differences. Main difference between them - Kernel needed for Media Engine (which makes SNES9XTYL so damn fast), some CPU optimizations (I believe, someone more familiar could correct me), and for Downgrading (unless you can trick your way around it (like the 2.00 downgrader).

2.71 Has Kernel Mode with the current exploit, 2.8 does not, though the eLoader does not currently take advantage of the kernel mode exploit in 2.71.

If you don't have GTA, you can downgrade a 2.0-2.6 PSP by upgrading to 2.71 and then downgrading.

The downgrader does NOT work on 2.8, since currently the exploit cannot access kernel mode in the 2.8 firmware.

Both versions of the eLoader work on TA-082 mobos, but the downgrader WILL BRICK A TA-082 PSP.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

I'll be honnest, I use to like Fanjita alot.. since I had 2.50 for months and wanted to play SNES and NES on my psp.. when the first eloader came out, i was so happy.. FINNALY! but since couple months now.. I so hate him for some reasons. I mean the guy didnt do anything for months now, I'll be waiting for so long for something and NOTHING. I just tried it with devhook using 2.50 and 2.71... Didnt even worked with the 2.50!

To ppl who usually say.. "He did alot for you" well let me tell you.. Dark_alex, with all my respect did thousands times more than Fanjita, I'm happy not to deppend on that guy from now on (Fanjita) since I downgraded my 2.50 back to 1.50 on the first day of the 2.50/2.60 downgrader.

What pissed me more off.. I have the feeling that this guy always try to get credits for others accomplishement s!

I was recently debating if I should downgrade with the newly released DGer and give up playing Naruto (imported) and my other games for homebrew, (and also take a chance with bricking) or just leave it and wait for a more secure DGer or something like this.. Its amazing to me how many people are totally ungrateful for the work that other people do. Just because its been so long since the last eLoader release doesn't mean Fanjita was sitting on his ass doing nothing between then and now. Things take time to develop. Besides which, I'm sure he has a life outside of coding stuff for PSPs. Most of us couldn't code a simple "Hello World" program for anything, much less a PSP.

Another thing is the endless slamming of people who upgraded to 2.80. Not everyone finds out about homebrew right away. Nobody deserves any of this any more than anybody else. You're not all high and mighty because you never upgraded past 1.5. I remember when I first get into all of this, I had 2.5 (which was pre-loaded onto my PSP, mind you) and there was endless slamming of anyone with 2.5/6 about how they don't deserve homebrew for upgrading. Then it happened with 2.7(1) users and now 2.8.

This is great news for the homebrew community in general. Things like this can only expand the homebrew community, which is never a bad thing. Sure, it brings in more noobs, but everybody needs to remember one thing-- we were ALL noobs at one point in time.

if you send your psp in for repairs, so doesnt necessarily send you their latest firmware along with it. i sent mine in as a 2.6 bricked, and they sent it back as a 2.5. but this was in europe. (germany to be specific) but im not sure about usa. hope this clears ***** up.

A lot (if not most) 2.5-2.6 users need this e-loader because of TA-082 motherboards which cannot be downgraded.

I'll say again: TA-082. If they try to downgrade then they will end up with a very expensive paper weight.

I congratulate #134's speech , also #137 is an ***** , I don't support stealing but it's nice if we can make big corporations make less money , and we having free stuff by the way. I downloaded to 1.5. Though I love 1.5 freedom, I would have prefered to keep 2.6. This may be a dumb question, but is it safe to upgrade back to 2.6 and use the new eloader? Also, will the Dev Hook .46 emulator work with this new eloader?

i never read anything about this or seen anything about it recently but i was wondering if it would be possible to modify an eboot so the psp thinks its upgrading to a higher version but actually using the "contents" of a lower version like lets say 2.71 for 2.8 users but having the eboot say its upgrading to 2.81 or 2.9 while ur installing 2.71 files so you can use a downgrader to 1.5 or even a socalled 2.81 upgrade using 1.5 files where u can run kernel access and other homebrews

I've been testing homebrews for days so it could be put into the GTA list on fanjita's website when the first eLoader came out.. I've been giving tips and advice, looking for many files so I could help others of the psp community and I've help couple ppl I know to downgrade their bad 2.60 PSP.

I might not be like fanjita (crazy damn good hacker) but at least I do my best to help many ppl with their problems...

And i'm hoping to do something, someday that people would remember for the rest of their life... Thats my dream.

Again, I wanted to know if it would be possible to upgrade my downgraded 1.5 (from 2.60 to 13.37) back to 2.60. I actually prefer the 2.60 firmware. Is it possible, will it run the newest eLoader, and does the eLoader run Dev Hook .46?

Finally, good work guys. Regardless of the nay-sayers whom refuse to give you guys credit, you all are a great ally to those who continue to fall prey to firmware upgrades with a lot of hype and little substance.

You people whining about SNES are just lazy. Go download Snes9xTYL 0.2 and be happy, as it works perfectly with this version of eLoader. NesterJ 1.20alpha also works just fine.

I've only been playing homebrew for 2 days, as I own a TA-082 and was unable to before, and even I can simply get off my ass and find a version that works.

So once again:

Snes9xTYL 0.2 - Works Perfect

NesterJ 1.20alpha - Works Perfect

Hopefully they will fix it though so that we can play DGen, as it is the only non-working emulator that I care about ATM.

PSPGenesis, snes9xTYL .2 and .3 work, Daedlus R8 works, just test them out, you wont brick it by using homebrew.

The Homer Rin gameboy/gameboycolor emulator version 3.2 works fine with the loader and pokemon is awsome now.Homer Rin is my favorite emulator.I am dissapointed because none of the GBA emulators work with this loader.
