Dark AleX wasn't hired, but "actively talking" to Sony?

PlayStation Portable - Image 1

Speaking of Wildcards, here's something that's definitely going to make lots of heads roll. In rather long MTV interview with John Koller, Sony's marketing head for the PlayStation Portable, certain few details have cropped up that pose some interesting questions for the homebrew scene. While the length of the interview talks about the PSP 2000 (PSP Slim/Lite), PlayStation Home on the PSP, and a second analog stick for the handheld, it's only towards to end where they talk about homebrew development.

Now, because of all these projects and features lined up for the PSP, it'd seem as if it would benefit Sony to ask for help from skilled programmers who are quite adept with the ins and outs of the PSP. In other words, homebrew developers and hackers. They actually even mentioned the magic word: Dark AleX.

Besides, DAX was the one who continuously whittled down the security measures that Sony has imposed with its official firmware updates. So, after the homebrew hero announced his "retirement" from the PSP hacking scene, you can't help but ask (and as did MTV during the interview):

MTV: Did Sony shut him down? Or had Sony hired him?
Koller: Neither. I think he's taking a hiatus.
MTV: Does Sony hire any of the PSP hackers?
Koller: It's not even a hiring thing. They come in and actively talk to us.

Whoa. Hold up. If we're to take Mr. Koller for his word (and he is the marketing head of THE PlayStation brand after all), then we are presented three facts:
  1. DAX wasn't given a cease-and-desist order from Sony
  2. DAX wasn't hired either
  3. homebrew developers and Sony are in active contact with each other
Of course, the last statement doesn't specifically point to Dark AleX per se. But "they" (PSP hackers in general) are the ones who come in and actively talk to Sony. So, what does that leave us with? Jamie M. and I were talking about this, casually throwing out our own ideas. And here's what we ended up asking ourselves (and it might do you good to ask yourselves the same thing):
  • Is Dark AleX really, really, really 100% gone? Or is he working in the background... with Sony?
  • Does Sony "hire" white hats black hats gray hats from the homebrew community?
  • What reasons would Sony have to be actively in contact with those hacking their systems?
Man. After the 3.40 LE CFW was released, as well as the OE source code... Can this day ever get any intense for the homebrew community? The full interview is behind the Read link below.

Seriously, I think people should leave Dark Alex alone.

OK, so he is not making custom firmwares for us anymore and may or may not have made a deal with SONY. So what? He is entitled to live his life as he sees fit without people questioning every choice he makes.

Oh, and this is just a suggestion, but here is one option that has not been tested yet...(this is directed at people making custom firmwares) SONY has expressed at least some interest in homebrew, so if those who are making custom firlwares make a firmware version that is unable to run UMD ISOs or allow access to the UMD drive from outside of the XMB icon, but still able to run all homebrew (not including UMD rippers and ISO launchers, of course), then there is a possibility that SONY may actually try to get along with people who enjoy homebrew. The only people who would suffer from ISO usage and UMD access (outside of the XMB icon) being blocked would be people who desire to pirare games.

It isn't confirmed yet that DAX is even working with Sony, and yet some of you ppl think he suddenly turned evil by working with Sony. For now all we can really say is that DAX left the PSP homebrew scene, and maybe even ditched the PSP altogether. We can't truly confirm anything else.

Well, my conclusion is that sony wants to be ontop of the game powerhouses. that means nintendo and microsoft, so with siny talking with homebrewers like dark alex, sony will gain more popularity going along with homebrew and be ontop.

» Sony doesn't hire highschool kids.

Judging by what I've gathered, Dark Alex is a high school student... or just graduated. Sony is very unlikely to hire someone right out of high school, just because they happen to be a gifted coder. Anyone who believes that he could possibly start working along side sony just has an overactive imagination.

» What are you people complaining about?

ISO's are the reason the PSP is doing so bad as far as games, it's only fair that Sony wants that to end I mean look on torrents, they're being downloaded more so then even PC games. It's sad what these custom fimwares have done to the homebrew and the PSP community, hopefully DarkAlex will fix that with a good locked firmware.

Every 'popular' console ever made has the files of its games available for download on the internet (hope that made sense but w/e). You know why? Cause every piece of software on the market is "Hackable." Software Developers are constantly trying to find ways to protect their software better, but there is always the few talent 'hackers' that are able to "crack the code" if you will. Even if DAX is a good coder, and even if he did start working for Sony (WHICH ISN'T CONFIRMED), you can't have a 'locked firmware.' There will always be ppl like M33, and that other new team, who will probably make the firmware cracked again. The PSP was just unfortunate enough to be exploited so early and easily, thus causing such a huge scene.

» If there is a will, there's always a way...

Bottom line is that every console has a way to be comprimised/hacked. That doesn't necessarily mean that Sony "hired" Dark_Alex although it wouldn't surprise me if they offered him a job or at least give him an interview. "If you can't beat'em, join'em", A classic but very effective cliche. It isn't uncommon for companies to offer jobs or financial compensastion when that individual is comprimising your business. When money talks, people quite often listen.

by dax.der.ino - 2007-08-06 22:55
» "They" ...

I think the thing to focus in on here is the word "they". He didn't say that DAX came in to talk to them. Just that "they" do. "Them". "Those people". I'm sure a bunch of not so talented people go to SONY every day. And I'm sure that SONY would have hired "those people" by now if they did have any talent. Bottom line ... if DAX wanted a job at SONY he would have one. And ... it wouldn't be a bad thing. It would be a talented person making a living. You couldn't blame him for that.

Right, but there is the thing with the PSP compared with all the other consoles, you do not have to mod it to get it to pirate games, it's nothing more then a download and install of custom firmware. The only other console that had this problem was, you guessed it, Dreamcast and you see what happen to it. I'm all for the scene, I've used my PSP for homebrew from the start but ISO hacking has made it into something totally worthless, I'm sure we'd get much more million dollar selling games if it wasn't for it. Thus more developers joining in, to those who do pirate games I hope you know what you are doing to the handheld.

by VSG - 2007-08-06 23:50
» my theory from long ago

a secret sony agent gave DA a devkit.

psp still not booming sales secret sony agent gave source code to DA so that he can make a hack file which will hack the official firmware and combine with 1.5 vulnerability hence the creation of OE firmwares of which is bypass DA as the hacker and passes the blame to the end user, very clever indeed.

DA name too popular, secret agent stop/seized DA OE releases, leaked the source to other hacker homebrewers. thus m33.etc.

thanks for reading, btw none of these are true!

You guys read to far into this. Dark Alex was not hired by sony. That is the single concrete fact in the related section of the interview. Nothing more nothing less. He may have spoken to sony in a developmental light or just in passing. Not fair to make assumptions until you ask the kid himself.

by Unregistered_Coward - 2007-08-07 00:51
» When will you guys get it?

Sony has more to lose than gain if they officially permitted homebrew on the Psp. By actively preventing homebrew they can enjoy increased sales when it is hacked but at the same time avoid the legal issues of copyright regarding emulation because they have not officially supported this. If Sony gives the homebrew scene an inch, they will take a mile.

Pretty naive questions, most notably:

"What reasons would Sony have to be actively in contact with those hacking their systems?"

To better learn how to protect themselves, of course. And realistically I don't think Sony would offer Dark Alex extented employment anyway short of perhaps very temporary contract work; Sony would never trust him, plus people generally need to be established in the WORKING industry to be considered worthy of a development job. Besides, isn't the cat too young to be working for them anyway? What is he, about 17 years old?

Sony pay there 100's of developers, and it must cost them a packet. Then some hacker comes along and blows away all the work that these developers have done. Look at the dang copyright laws, they go way too extreme in copy protection. In the long run, people find out loopholes anyway. » GrayFox777x that's still piracy

If you copy a game so you can play two player or if you copy a game and are playing it on two consoles at the same time that's still piracy. You can't buy something and then copy it for your mate so he can play it too, that's illegal. There's no where in the world that that would be legal.

by Sean - 2007-08-07 12:13
» Doubt it

That sounds like a man didn't really land on the moon story. I doubt very much that sony want to encourage homebrew on the PSP, the PSP hand held is way to cheap, Sony only make money on games on it. They've encouraged PS3 homebrew to a certain extent because they don't lose as much money per console.

by Sean - 2007-08-07 12:24
» Xbox1 also could take custom firmware

The xbox1 could also take custom firmware with no mod chip, alot of people did it but the problem was you couldn't connect it to live anymore because Microsoft would detect you running a different firmware and ban you from live. Because of this Mod chips that can be switched off and on were more popular on the Xbox1 then firmware chip mods. So no, the Dreamcast was not the only console which could be firmware modded by download.

mr_bigmouth I don't understand the context of your statement no one is saying old consoles could not be hacked, I think you misunderstood Nightvortez's comment re Dreamcast.

hehe.

after spending hundreds of hours opening up the firmware for the enjoyment of the community FOR FREE without even taking a cent from the community, I personally think its only normal for him to talk to Sony and maybe ask for an open job that he can get into.

hackers are hackers - as they say "no honour among thieves". so its only natural for DAX to look after himself especially he has proven that his hacking skills.

so from my experience... the word "talking to Sony" means DAX is asking Sony for a job since he already demonstrated the skills to open up the firmware and using the hacking background and his name... he expects Sony to consider him at least.

and what i bet is that he didnt expect Sony to say no. my absolute bet is that Sony refused to take him in and that DAX is probably a little bit disappointed that he wasnt given on the spot consideration.

and that his so called "retirement" is a step to make Sony think that he's already out of the 'dirty door' and ready to clean up his act.

hehe. DAX must have been refused by Sony. hehe i bet DAX even offered a FREELANCE programming job but Sony probably said - NO THANKS right in his face. DAX must be feeling really stupid right now.

by NightVortex - 2007-08-07 14:52
» @Sean

Ok my statement was exaggerated as far as that goes, but like with the PC games there is always a hook to why it's better to actually buy the game where with the PSP having the ISO and having the UMD is virtually the same thing except there isn't a hard copy. Not to mention the fact that the games aren't even that big of a download compared with full DVD games. Not to mention how many people use CFW right now, the only thing that's stopping them from downloading is their own morality and that's a small thing when it comes to money.

by .. - 2007-08-07 14:54

95% of pirated games are pirated because the person won't buy them. Without piracy, they would have less sales: I download ISOs of games I would never buy but if it turns out it's good I'll buy it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences#Miscellaneous_spelling_differences

grey or gray ,Grey became the established British spelling in the 20th century, pace Dr. Johnson and others,[74] and is but a minor variant in American English, according to dictionaries. Canadians tend to prefer grey. Some American writers[citatio n needed] tend to assign wistful, positive connotations to grey, as in "a grey fog hung over the skyline", whereas gray often carries connotations of drabness, "a gray, gloomy day."

Last Thursday, an anonymous coward divulged to me that the man operating under the pseudonym "Dark AleX" is in fact planning to charge his laser over 9000 times at the next Sony corporate meeting until they meet his demands of manufacturing and distributing UMD burners to every major retailer in Africa so that the junglebunnies may make our games reeeel cheap like for no monies.

» Don't Worry - Be Happy

I'm Happy For this Guy - I think it gives him an opportunity to make something of his life, and also give the chance for someone else to step up and take the reins. His previous achievements are well documented, so a good coder will have no trouble coming in and taking over, and a great coder will rise above and crack Alex's Sony code, just as he did to the original. Be happy, for a new day has come

*Life* and *his* I think you meant there..

learning to read and write at even a basic level might be worth a look at some point.

I mean if your going to call out a clearly educated person who can code for a PSP for having no "live" the least you could do is not make yourself look like you have even less of a "live" by typing your comment out better than a 6 year old would have done.

Nice attempt, shame the irony destroyed you before you even began though.

If that was the case, why wouldnt DAX at least drop by to make a statement saying that wasnt true?

Its all a conspiracy, Sony is paying the hackers to hack PSPs so that people who visits websites like this will buy PSPs, I already got 2 just because of the iso emulation. Plus UMD piration doesnt affect sony, it affect the people who make the games, like RockStar(GTA) and stuff.

» Welcome to the world of propaganda.

"Is Dark AleX really, really, really 100% gone? Or is he working in the background... with Sony?"

I dislike flaming nor getting involved with idiotic speculation but this is just a load of crap. Stop brewing up a load of wild rumours without really knowing real information. Especially when you haven't even met or know the guy personally. A friend of mine does and knows for a fact that this is far from the truth (same goes with all those "reasons" suggested by the many idiots here such as bribery, etc.). So like many have already said, lay off the editorial. Reporting is good - biased, unfounded speculations aren't.

I've seen far better in other places. Sad to see QJ's mediocre content being dragged down by lame commentators. >_<

~

Ps. As for talks with Sony, theres a tiny but extremely warped grain of salt here. DA did have a close encounter with Sony, but nothing like the pleasant / "want-a-job?" type encounter suggested here. The guy's got a soul and is a person - he'd do things no different than most of us. Keep that in mind before you start spewing out bull***** comments please.

by Anonymous - 2007-08-08 05:21
» (Afterthough post-comment-reading)

Pss. And if you're really wondering, yes DA's a normal teen like most of us, just with a higher gift in coding. He's got a hacker mindset, but a true hacker does not and will never consider oneself an "elite" or "god". He's Spanish for all you mindless American fanboys, but that doesn't mean a thing (you'll find devs from China, Russia, India, most of Europe, the US, Canada, etc. - just like programmers/hackers in general, PSP homebrew isn't nationality restricted; information wants to be free, no matter where you are).

Remember, programmers code for the people, but not so they are slaves to the people. Things like this come from voluntary free time (for some, its just a hobby like any other). Next time you want to say something like "DA's a jerk for quitting the scene" or "bet he just quit and now works for Sony cause he like money", keep that comment to yourself (or others will shove it up unpleasant places).

Seriously, this site needs some _good_ mods.

Sony Exec Talks New PSP's Upgrades, GPS Attachment, NYC Appeal And More

By Stephen Totilo

Del.icio.us Digg Newsvine Send Print You Tell Us

NEW YORK — The upcoming PlayStation Portable coming out this September is actually called the "PSP 2000." The infamous PSP hacker Dark_Alex was not hired by Sony. And the PSP is more popular here than in any other city in the U.S. (Sorry, Chicago!)

Those were just a few of the many surprises shared last week by John Koller, head of marketing for Sony's American PlayStation Portable division during a half-hour interview about the state of the PSP with MTV News.

Koller was in town to show off the new one-third-lighter, one-fifth-slimmer PSP which will arrive on store shelves in September. In a hotel suite on Manhattan's east side, he plugged the unit into a TV, demonstrating the new model's video-output function. He played a scene from Jet Li's "The One" in 480 pixels on an LG widescreen flat-panel TV. It almost filled the screen. He played a minute of the PSP game "Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters" in its native resolution, 480x272, which, while displaying bigger than it did on the PSP, only occupied about a quarter of the LG TV. (Yank the cable out of the TV and the video signal jumps to the PSP screen.)

To the eyes, the revised PSP looks like the original. To the touch, the difference is noticeable. And the name? In public the new model will be called PSP, but Koller revealed that it is codenamed PSP 2000, distinguishing it from current models, which are called PSP 1000.

Those were the points Koller intended to cover, but he proved game to answer just about anything regarding Sony's system. For example, he confirmed what subway riders may have already suspected: NYC is the king of PSP sales, since its launch. "It's gone New York, Chicago, and then it's D.C., Philadelphia," Koller said. "Then, interestingly enough, Riverside/ San Bernardino, California." Come again on that last one? "It's very weird. I've been watching it, waiting for it to fall out of the top 10, but it has stayed at [#5] the whole time of our owner base."

That's where it's being bought. But who's buying it? Koller said that the PSP has a 95 percent male ownership, compared to 50-50 for the iPod, according to studies he's seen. More of a surprise, though, is that his market research shows that the iPod has 79 percent ownership by Caucasians, Koller said, whereas the PSP is just "44 percent or 45 percent" white. Koller said Sony has noticed this demographic surprise but hasn't figured out why. Had it become something of an urban accessory? "There's been a debate going on about whether it was our marketing that's done it and turned it into more of a cultural hip-hop product or whether it just is — if the product just lends itself to that."

Whoever owns the system, Koller said they've been calling for the video-out function added to the new PSP. When the revised unit was revealed at E3 last month, it surprised many gamers because it lacked a checklist of tweaks some gaming blogs and news sites suggested were safe bets. For example, some theorized that the PSP would drop the universal media disc format or at least de-emphasize it for a new built-in hard drive. The new unit has no such drive. "We had heard discussion about a hard drive," Koller said. "The final analysis is we decided a memory stick was good enough for now."

Others hoped for a second analog stick or nub to make the PSP do a better job of running game genres styled for console controllers. "We certainly looked at the area below the [face buttons on the right side of the PSP] for a second analog stick, but we thought the issues far outweighed the benefit we'd get out of it," he said, acknowledging that engineers at Sony's headquarters in Japan had investigated such a change. He said the problem was that games programmed for a one-stick model wouldn't work well with the two-stick and vice versa. "Japan looked at it and said [it

» So, then...

Dax wasn`t taken out by Sony, and they didn`t hire him either.

He really just... sold us out. He quit on his own, and in turn started being in cahoots with Sony. But why? He made the OEs, CFWs with really the sole intention of saying "F U SONY!".. so what would make him up and quit, then get in contact with Sony..?

by mr toasty - 2007-08-08 09:57
» uh

I thought that one doesn't actually BUY the software itself, but the right to use it, and usually that means use it on only ONE system at a time.

That's why ISO loading is in the grey area, you CAN use it if you rip the game YOURSELF and use that copy on your own PSP, but the UMD and the ISO cannot be played at the same.

» i agree

but im sure if you made sumthin like a psp, and everyone just hacked it, and weneva u release a firmware upgrade for it, hackers just hacked them and change them to run homebrew, n u lost millions becos of ppl just downloading isos for free ("I download ISOs of games I would never buy but if it turns out it's good I'll buy it.", but as soon as you have the game, why would you buy it again?), ud be pissed cos im kno i wud. whers the money in running games you can download for free? so this article is oblously trying to mislead ppl into thinking sony will allow homebrew. it will NEVER happen, trust me. think about the people who want ps1 games to be at least downloadable from a pc(rather the the ps3), it aint gna happen, cos sony wants you to buy a ps3. and as most ppl i think have sed, it doesnt say what about. cud of been anythin!

sorry if im gettin the wrong picture, but thats what i think anyways.

This is dumb. Dark-Alex would never create cfw under

people will stop looking up to DAX.
