2.71 Custom Firmware SE-A released by Dark_AleX! |

These days, Dark_AleX has made it a habit of making big news at least
once every week. And might we add, a great habit at that. Just
yesterday, he released a generic downgrader which made it a piece of
cake to anyone who wanted to downgrade. But in case anyone looked
harder, you would've noticed that the file was named
updateflasher.zip/rar.We're sure many people got curious of the fact that a downgrader was named as updateflasher. Well, although we have known about it for a little while now, we decided to keep quiet so that you guys would get a huge surprise, come release day.
And well, we guess it's time to let everyone know what Dark_AleX has been working on. How about we tell you that we can run all 1.5 kernel mode homebrew on our 2.71 PSP. While we're at it, we might also add that it's a seamless package. You won't know that the PSP has been modified in any way, apart from the fact that you can run homebrew properly on the 2.71 firmware. All the magic is courtesy of Dark_AleX and his 2.71 Custom Firmware, or as Mathieulh likes to call it, 2.71 SE-A.
This modification will not run on a TA-082 PSP. Do not even try it out. It will surely brick your PSP.
Firstly, here are a list of the features:
- 1.00/1.50 Eboot support (both kernel and user mode).
- 2.71 Eboot support (both kernel and user mode).
- Runs on 2.71 VSH.
- Ability to run Devhook (both 1.50 and 2.71 versions are fully compatible).
- Ability to run all 2.71 (and lower UMDs).
- 1.00/1.50 prx executable support.
- Support both KXploited and unpatched eboots for 1.50 kernel.
- Support any 2.71 homebrew coded for HEN C.
- Compatibility is 100% for 2.71 homebrew and approx 99% for 1.00/1.50 homebrew.
- Recovery mode.
Now how is this different from HEN_C, you may ask. Well, like we said, it's all rolled into one cool seamless package. You won't need to run the Homebrew Enabler before running any homebrew. Secondly, it has been confirmed that you will be able to load your firmware mods which you've been using on the 1.5 custom firmware. So looking at the features, we'll probably stick our neck out and proclaim that the days of firmware 1.5 are numbered.
Personally, one of the main reasons I've stayed on 1.5 is because of Devhook and the Firmware mods. Now since it's all supported on 2.71, I don't see any reason why I should stick on 1.5. Heck, in case I have any problems, I can always downgrade using Dark_AleX's downgrader! I'm sure you guys might be wondering "So what's the catch?" Well, there aren't any, unless you consider a two-second wait time while booting the PSP or UMD autoloading. Besides, the UMD autoloading will probably be disabled by a firmware mod sometime in the future.
Here's a set of instructions which will help you on your way towards firmware nirvana. It can only be applied from 1.5 firmware.
- Mathieulh has said that after installing the custom firmware, there isn't much space left on Flash0. So it's best to use the downgrader which formats the whole Flash0 first. That way, you can be sure that there aren't any useless files on your Flash.
- You will need a 1.5 dump. Those are only available if you're on a 1.5. Though you won't have to worry, Dark_AleX has bundled a helper program which will help you make a firmware dump easily.
- First, copy the seupdmaker and seupdmaker% folders to your PSP.
- Now download the 1.5 and 2.71 update eboots from our site and put them in the seupdmaker folder with the names 150.PBP and 271.PBP
- Using the Helper program, make a firmware dump.
- Once done, copy the generated .dxar file from the seupdmaker folder to the 271seflasher folder.
- Then, simply use the update flasher to flash the custom firmware on your PSP!
There are some precautions you have to take though. Make sure your PSP is not a TA-082. Secondly, make sure your PSP's battery level is above 75%. And finally, be careful while using this application. It modifies your flash, so you have to be careful; any application that modifies your flash has a chance of bricking your PSP. It is indeed very necessary that you fully read and reread the readme file inside the download before proceeding.
Finally, the download links to the Homebrew Enabler, the Generic Downgrader in case you want to downgrade to 1.5 to create your own dump, and the link to the actual release. Enjoy!
Update: Seems the 2.71 SE-A fever is making its round as we got feedback of more than 10 successfull updates versus zero brick.

This looks sweet but unless it can load isos and csos I'm not going to use it as its just removing functionality.
Explain to me why not worth it, if you can use all homebrew including 1.5 homebrew, why not upgrade?, you get all in one firmware.

i have this installed and i love it! Who needs Epsilon BIOS now? As well as being so awesome as to launch 1.0/1.5 homebrew from the 2.71 XMB, i feel safe with my recovery mode and ability to uninstall the cfw by installing 1.5 fw thru the recovery menu. Thank you very much Dark_AleX!
This allows you to boot up all 1.5 homebrew. So you can run dev hook on the 2.71 and then boot up 2.71 with devhook and run isos! SO yeah, there is absolutely no reason to stay at 1.5 because everything is runnable on this 2.71 custom firmware!!

It'd be nice if someone could mod this firmware to load/change isos from the main menu, like when using devhook (with home+R or home+L)... just so we don't need to run devhook every time whenever we want to play an iso.

What if $ony's new firmwares find a way to error out the installs if they detect Dark_Alex's work? I'll stick with my 1.5 until I have some proof that the future upgrades will function properly.
SO for all the people on 1.5 like myself , can soemone who has this firmware tell us how it works. I have a few questions if anyone wants to answer .
1) does the homebrew run in the same way as on 1.5 or is there a few extra steps u have to take ( like when u use DH on 1.5 you have to reboot the psp to play homebrew again )?
2) can i revert back to 1.5 ?
3) what advantages does it have over the 1.5 firmware
basically I am just wondering if its goign to be as easy to run homebrew as it is with 1.5 i.e memory stick> homebrew> exit homebrew> xmb ..........or is it like this : memorystick> some kinda launcher> homebrew> exit homebrew> exit launcher> xmb ...

if i read correstly, it doesnt mount isos, so you still need to run devhook to run them. That is the main reason i dont wanna upgrade to this.
Also, it would be great IF SOMEONE WHO UPGRADED TO THIS COULD MAKE A DUMP OF THEIR FIRMWARE SO WE COULD GET A DEVHOOK VERSION OF THIS!! =D
I recommend updating from 1.5 to this. Its much better than loading devhook all the damn time. Plus recovery mode is added. :)

Wait- I'm confused. Can we use our firmware mods -like the POC, or HarleyG's (which is teh b3st) on this modified 2.71? I'm going to update, but I'd like to know before I try to install my CF so I don't end up with a nice shiny brick. But for all the noobs to scared to downgrade, why not? According to the developer, everything works (IRShell?), and you get all of the new features, like web browser, and not have to load devhook every time you want to load a umd. And you can load ISO's, either through devhook (except now you don't need 40 smething MB's of files to do it, since it's all onboard the flash.) Or whatever happened to UMDemulator? I bet that still works. Think before you post, it saves everyone else from having to read your spam.

uhhh i have 2.71 and henC and i dont know wut this does or how to do it...I know this makes custom firmware but do i need to use genberic downgrader??
No. The Readme says:
"Note with wifi: 1.50 kernel doesn't understand WPA. So if you have a connection with WPA, you cannot magically use it in a 1.50 application. Use WEP or not protection, or wait to wifi applications to be ported to 2.71 kernel."
So this means that only HB which is capable of running on FW 2.71 can use WPA with this FW.
Can anyone supply me with the .dxar file? My psp won't create it. It keeps saying "cannot open file."

Just flashed my psp to 2.71 se! I had to downgrade it to 1.5 first(it was a 2.6). runs my 1.5 homebrew, but you have to put them in folder GAME150. So far so good.
2.7 might be the new big thing, but 1.5 will always be the king, because without that fw none of this would ever of happened, so long 1.5, its been great....Dark_aleX you rule. now get going on that 2.8 downgrader fool!!

but im stopping at 1.5 for now, its not like its a big thing to use devhook and with sleep mode you can pretty much leave your psp in fw2.71 anyway and you can just mount different iso's and cso's from that.....
if you still have to use devhook for this fw your just doing exactly the same thing as me, but without using custom firmware...

right i have upgraded to this, as it sounded to good to be true...and it seems that it is...i have followed all instructions perfectly and already i can't load 6-7 of my homebrew apps (nesterj, snes9x-me, file assistant, quake multiplayer, r-gear crashes the psp, there's a few more...!) irshell 2.2 needs a patch (in the param.sfo), i have uploaded it to

Dark_Alex, you are truly a God! Everything I've tried has worked. I'm suprized Sony hasn't tried to hire you.
To the person who said "ISO=poor", it's exceedingly rude to make fun of people for being poor. Also, why exactly do you believe ISO users can't help the scene? Do you know better than Booster, who's help to the scene is probably dwarfed only by D.A.'s and who was clearly OK with ISO use having put it in Devhook?
For the people worried about that 1% of 1.5 homebrew that won't work, why not emulate 1.5 with Devhook? You'll still be using it less than you do now.
And finally, THANK YOU DARK ALEX! With my half-bricked PSP I had to rely on Harleyg's custom firmware to autolaunch IR Shell (which forced me to hold down the X button every time) and ungracefully switch between it and Devhook to use the XMB (to view videos and certain music and images). I spent more time turning my PSP off and on than I did using it. This makes life a lot easier.

my applications in this folder don't show up. The directory for example is M:\PSP\GAME150\PMPMO _\EBOOT.PBP. Could someone please tell me what's wrong.

Some of you maybe having to hard reset out of DEVHOOK46, the tip i have is simple, just place ESCAPE DEVHOOK FROM 2,XX into the GAME folder not GAME150 so you can select it from the emulated 2.71 firmware. ;P

k i used henC booted devhook went into 1.5FW got the DATA.DXAR file i put it into the 2.71SEflasher folder and then I booted it up. I pressed X to continue and thenit says PANIC: error creating directory flas:0/data
then it says PANIC: error creating directory ...
it says that for 9 lines then stops and says writing 1.50 subset...0% then freezes...nothing more happens...It just stops...:( wut should i do im afraid to press anything...:( (I dont have TA-082)

I ran into a few problems, but those were PEBCAK. A few notes, issues I ran into setting this up:
Make sure you name the update files "271.PBP" and "150.PBP". I accidentally named one "2.71.PBP", and this screwed up the dxar file.
Next, when testing the UMD disc, make sure there's not a huge piece of foam inside the disc *cough*
It takes a bit to load, but it's sex overall. This is beautiful.
Another note: As mentioned in the README, if you want to run 1.50 homebrew, make sure you have a GAME150 folder for those files, ~AND~ a GAME folder. You cannot run 1.50 homebrew from GAME150 if there is no GAME folder present, even if GAME is empty.

if this lets you load iso's as well as all home brew i would proberbly upgrade my 1.50 to 2.71 simply because im sick ov having to start up dev hook when all i want to do is change my xmb wallpaper.coz on 1.50 you cant use wallpapers, you have to use the diffrent color screen saver that only changes color every month

i just tried this and everything worked but the problem is i cant seem to get my wwe smackdown vs. raw 2006 umd to work. Do i just select it from the main menu, cause when i do it says: The game could not be started (8002012D). This game worked when i emulated 2.71 through devhook.. any help?
The no 082 thing is kind of pointless to mention. You need 1.50 to even install this.

2.71 is getting all these custom firmware, downgraders and eloaders and the greatest acheivment for 2.8 is tiff tetris. I've been checking pspupdates every day for at least an eloader but nothing. There are more 2.8ers than 2.71ers.
I hope you all upgrade from 1.5 to 2.7. I have two PSP's, a 1.5, and a 2.7, so now I can run homebrew off both, while maintaining one with 1.5. I cannot believe you 1.5ers upgraded.

i know my psp wont ... its already suffering from psp overusage disease!
but although "all" 1.50 HB can now be used on 2.71 im not upgrading from the "magic firmware" because i live by the old laws: "if something aint broke, dont flash it!"
a lesson learned from a couple of motherboard flashes (only ever happened on asrock boards) where the bios flash went dodgy! damn cheap ass motherboards, thank god they were customers and not mine.

yea loco roco made me update to 2.71 then i wanted to test out more demos and now i'm stuck at 2.80....but gj...hope 2.80 is next...
I think I'll use this when it supports iR Shell without modifciation. ISO loading would be nice, even if I don't use that feature. DevHook'd 2.71 has the screen-capture module, even if it doesn't have iR Shell support, I will upgrade, if you can call it that. Animated GIFs are fun to make.
Art is already working on it, x-flash is on its ways to FW2.71..
some *cough*isos*cou gh* don't work under the devhook fix just yet. i'm going to test out the recovery menu option with the 1.5 downgrader to see if that works and be back to this 2.71 firmware when the bugs get fixed. nevertheless excellent work dark_alex.
am i the only one thats noticed that umd games arent working?
When IRShell and PimpStreamer and DevHook 8.1 support come out then I guess I'll finally update that virgin 1.5 of mine. I might try for S&G's.

i had to get a new psp about 3 mnths ago and it was already on 2.60 firmware. how do i find ut if it hasa TA-082 motherboard? would love t use the ustom firmware but dont want to have another pos psp. any info would be appreciated.

Well, turnd off the corrupted data in recovery meny and now i converted all my 1,5 eboot to 1.0 eboot instead.
i do not regret going from 1,5 to 2,71 so far..
every ting i tested works so far and now i dont have to use DH to load 2.0+ umds anymore
great work DA but I have 2 question
-will xflash and other flash apps still work (I hear they wont)
-1.5 can use version changer to fake to 2.0 and then play any backup (2.0 and under (but not gta) games) without a UMD. great for saving batt. and for people with broken umd drives.

I have upgraded my jap psp 1.50 to dark alex custom firmware, and all went good (even if X and O, still act "japanese way").
1.5 homebrew work (even pimpstreamer), devhook and isos work just fine, however got some problem with UMDs.
1.5 umds seem to work, but I tried SvR2006 umd and it gives error, altough it works perfectly with devhook.
I don't have any other 2.00+ umd to try with.
Does any other of you have a similar problem?

I tried loading Monster Hunter US and it gave me an error. But then I loaded Initial D and everything went fine.

Once again, you have proved how great you are DaX. You're truly a great coder. But i have two questions for this:
A) "Does is support autoloading AND/OR Harleyg's custom firmware?" if it did that would be nice...But I get the idea that this probably couldn't fit both on the Flash.
B) "Does it support iR Shell flawlessly?" I love iR Shell. I shall not abandon it to that silly XMB! Yeah i know i'm a tad odd.

guys, don't try to run this program on 2.71 FW. this program needs to be running on FW 1.5
just follow steps below:
1. If you have 2.71 PSP, Just downgrade to FW 1.5 with Generic Downgrader by DarkAlex.
2. If you downgraded your PSP succesfully to 1.5, just dump 1.5 FW and 2.71 FW using seupdmaker to make DATA.DAXR. (see that readme.txt)
3. Copy the generated DATA.DXAR file at 271seflasher directory.
4. Just run it.
5. after then, PSP will be reboot and you can see 2.71's XMB screen. that's all.

Why was I trying to run this on FW 2.71.. : (
that refers to flash modification apps like xflash (which won't work since the flash memory is much different now). This runs all homebrew except those apps, and I expect a compatible version of xflash to be released within a few days. So there really is no reason to stay at 1.5

ok i read all the great stuff about this used to be from 2.71 then downgraded to 1.50 I LOVE HOMEBREW ESPEICALLY MY OLD FAV SNES AND NES games but ive heard from joey and others snesxtyl 4.2me doesnt load or nestjer1.20beta2 so i need a good clear understanding of wat homebrew tdoesnt load right or not at all plz sum1 make a guide =] yoshi island PWNS lol..

hey its work! thanks and Great Job DA - i can always downgrade it back and i know I DID, cause now i'm wondering, for pple that uses this program, i know its cool to play homebrew on this 2.71 SE-a but dont you still have to USE DEVHOOK to load ISO just like 1.5 going to devhook to load ISO/web? it might have the web browser or whatever else it have, but what different does it make using your computer internet? you can flame me for saying something like this stupid but you wont know who I am, still Great work DA keep up the update. Maybe someday i will update this again.
I have waited for the day of kernel mode hombrew on all firmwares, Booster made that possible with DevHook, and now Dark_Alex have made that dream much much closer to reality. Thanks Dark_Alex and Booster!!!

Great firmware, all my homebrew works great in 1.5 Kxploit format. However, the Killzone demo I got in the mail will not play even though it requires fw 2.71. All the games that require up to fw 2.6 work great though.

i was able to run this with my 32 MB mem stick and i have 2.71 and homebrew, now i am set until 0x89 comes out

All you could have done was rename the GAME folder to GAME150 and created another folder called GAME to replace the one you renamed.
BTW this firmware is totally awesome. You can run the kernal eboots directly in the xmb menu without having to do anything else special. This is definitely the new 1.50.
Also, to disable the autoboot totally turn off your psp (hold power for 15 seconds), hold the R button and turn your psp back on. You will get a blue screen and go into the options there and enable the options desired. BTW don't change anything in the advance menu.

Wow, this is awesome! Downgraded my 2.71, then upgraded to this. Worked without a hitch. And homebrew, both Devhook and 1.5 homebrew, work great! No more needing to emulate 1.5!
For those who are having trouble running UMDs, I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, because I've tried running both UMDs and .ISO backups that require 2.71 firmware, and they work perfectly! Maybe it's just a problem with Smackdown vs. Raw, but I wouldn't know, since I can't stand wrestling...
Oh, and #194, running devhook on the 2.71 (NandFlash) @ 333mhz works perfectly too.

Forget my last post, I used the recovery menu to downgrade back to 1.5 then redid 2.71 and now it works, again nice work.
This is such a tease. I followed the instructions and copied both 1.50.pbp and 271.pbp to the seupdmaker folder and ran the program from my old 1.5 firmware.
The program has been running for AGES!
The memorystick (Genuine Sony 2GB) light is flashing to show its busy and has gotten up to this message :

it works almost flawlessly, and i stress that. if you currently use a custom firmware like harleyg's, and lets say the latest version of the devhook launcher mod, 1.63, and have the flash files for 2.71 on your PSP, you are better off in my opinion. loading devhook sucessfully with 2.71SE is a pain! for instance, 2 games, smackdown vs raw 2006 and me and my katamari do not load with HEN loaded. if you play them, and it may occur with other games for all i know, you will most likely miss them.having the option to disable HEN was an excellent feature in one of the latest versions of devhook launcher mod by chunglam. i'm glad this is revision A, b/c personally, i would add more options in revision B and so on... taking consideration,

p.s. the addition of the GAME150 folder isn't too good of a touch either. when you emulate 1.50 in devhook with 2.71SE, you cannot play any emulators unless you copy them to this folder. the icons are also out of whack. most icon organization programs won't be able to fix that. in order to play a game like smackdown vs raw 06 or me and my katamari, you have to emulate 2.71 without HEN. keep these things in mind....
oh yes please!!! a dump of this amazing firmware for me and others to test in dev hook would be very nice indeed!!!!!!!

You mean if I was to install this firmware, Me & My Katamari won't load? What would I have to do to load it off the UMD?
That's kinda weird so many people have had problems running various homebrew and UMD games on this firmware. I haven't had any trouble, even running Madden 07, Nascar, and all my other games.
@201: I would just shut the PSP off and try creating the .DXAR file again. Since it's not writing to the PSP's flash, doing this shouldn't hurt anything. To give you an idea, it shouldn't take any more than 5 minutes to complete the whole process of making the .dxar file. Oh, and make sure you name the 2.71 EBOOT "271.PBP", not "2.71.PBP". That seems to be a common problem for several people.
I'm just curious what would be causing everyone to have all these problems...

First of all, A big thanks to Dark alex for sticking with the psp tricks, we would all be worse off with out you, but for now i think i'll stick with my 1.5, it seems this new revision does exactly the same thing, you still need to use devhook to play isos and such,
i have da's cf and it auto boots to the devhook gui 3 seconds after i turn on my psp, so strait away im where i want to be, all i have to do is click exit to go back to 1.5 or start to go to 2.71 no worries and no umd auto load life is sweet ohh and 333 all the way no crashes plus the reboot to 1.5 from 2.71 means i never have to turn of my psp, i'm happy thanks Dark_Alex!

I have to be a freak to actually feel depressed by these news. More good news for 2.71 users, no good news for 2.8 since quite a long time. (Considering all the hacking updates for 2.71.) I was even thinking of exchanging my PSP to a friend who has a 2.60 one and doesn't care about hacks, but knowing that he doesn't know how to take care of things I am not pretty sure that is a very good idea.
So I must say goodbye for now and stop hoping for 2.8 good news during these weeks. I am gonna leave for a month from this website and start thinking about other stuff. (Like playing with the DS Lite and replace my PSP mp3 player with an iPod Nano from my niece.)

I am currently running 2.71 Firmware. I tried using the generic downgrader with 1.5 firmware eboot-- I followed the instructions included in the readme and proceeded to begin the process on my psp, after hitting X to begin the process, I got an error saying it couldn't find ipl_update.prx

After much hesitation, I tried it. Devhook .46, Snex9xtyl 0.4.2me, and NesterJ, work flawlessly. I Like it so much im doing both my psp's. Good work Dark Alex.

you place the RECOVERY folder in the GAME folder. everything works great so far, all homebrew, devhook, isos, umds, etc... as long as you follow the instructions and understand how it works like creating a GAME150 folder for 1.5 homebrew, its definately worth upgrading from 1.5fw can't find a single reason to hold on to 1.5 anymore

Upgraded to 2.71 SE-a - absolutely fine no worries, everything worked.
Wanted to make sure recovery mode worked ok....used the original 1.50 sony eboot.pbp, renamed to UPDATE.PBP, popped it into the recovery folder PSP/GAME/RECOVERY alongside the other files & went for it!! (right button on power on)
Sweet as a nut, back to the good old 1.50....
All right so I am now back on 2.71 se-a, now I know I can drop back to 1.50 or recover from a problem at any time.
Have been with the PSP since day one (got it on first release date in UK)...Dark Alex, you have made it fun, interesting, entertaining, nail biting...God Bless You...

If your Pimpstreamer is 1.50 version (IE Folders: Pimpstreamer and Pimpstreamer%) Then you have to create a new directory in PSP Called GAME150 and place the homebrew there. READ THE README.

Mmmkay, no ISO support on this 2.71 CFW.
UMD Emulator shows as corrupted and will not work, DAXZISO loads but freezes when its supposed to load.
DA needs to improve it, but gr8 job so far, at least you can run homebrew!

Yeah, but still, 1.50 is still better for isos because you can just load them on 1.50 not going through the whole emulation process....

When I try to run a game from Devhook is doesn't work!!!
I go to UMD SELECT and press O, and choose my iso, go back and hit START. All is does is turn off, and then I have to turn it on again.

Put all the RECOVERY files into the RECOVERY folder. Put the RECOVERY folder into your GAME folder. Then, get whatever fw you want(1.5-2.6). Rename is the eboot for the fw to UPDATE and place it in the RECOVERY folder.
Start up recovery by booting while holding R. Press the third option(somethin g about running the eboot).
USE AT OWN RISK!
Till DA fixes DAXZISO to run on the SE FW i am sticking to 1.5 as the only 3 app i use on 1.5 are irshell, DAXZISO and Devhook and only one is working smoothly as of now.. i am not risking moving to the SE.
But one thing... Dark Alex is a absolute marvel. :)

It's perfect!!! now i don't have to emulate 2.71 to use the browser, lol... The only problem is the UMD autorun when you reboot the PSP.. and i don't know why but the Game that i use to run homebrew (Medievil) now bricks in the loading, both in the emulated and non-emulated fws.. Maybe it's because i had my UMD loaded when making the update

Can I use the Dark Alex's downgrader to go back to 1.5 if I installed 2.71 SE-A? Will I need to run HEN_C first?
Now I'm using Harleyg's Custom Firmware Patch v0.2, can I directly flash to 2.71 custom SE-A firmware? Or should I flash back to original offical 1.5 firmware before flashing the 2.71 custom SE-A firmware?
I tried the custom firmware but it is not enough to make me stay on it. I need ISO capabilities WITHOUT EMULATION aka UMD Emulator/Daxziso. When the 271 se gets this stuff im staying. But If I miss the firmware I can always upgrade/downgrade freely.

@EVERYONE (noobs & veterans): 1.50 as golden firmware is almost over. 1.50 enthusiasts such as myself, feel free to give this a try. there are no step by step instructions in the package because it's so easy and straight forward but for the sake of avoiding confusion, i'll put one here:
*REMOVE UMDs*
*BE SURE TO HAVE 1.50 (if you are emulating 2.71 at the moment, go back to 1.50 first!)*
1) Download the 2.71 Custom Firmware SE (whether it's the A [for broadband users with 4 options] or B [for 56k users with only the default & recommended option]). This doesn't really matter because they are one and the same except the one with 4 options (SE-A) gives you a choice what you want the installer to copy onto your memory stick. I tried the 1st and 2nd options (with and without the 1.50 firmware files) on two separate PSPs... you'll only need the first option which is what SE-B (for 56k users) has.
2) If you want to play it safe like I did, before proceeding, copy all your memory stick's contents onto a folder on your computer. Then, once the backup is complete, format your memory stick.
3) Run the installer you've just downloaded. Make sure your PSP is in USB mode, then choose which drive letter it is using in the installer's menu. Then let the copying begin. Once the installation is done, you may exit.
All this installer does is copy files to your PSP. You can still turn back from here. Just empty out your MS and recopy what I told you to backup in step 2.
4) Grab your PSP, exit the USB mode then scroll right to the Game menu. Go to: Game > Memory Stick > 2.71 SE-A Firmware Install
- Make sure you have 75-100% battery. Having it plugged and charging wont make a difference. The battery itself has to be charged.
- What this does is install the custom firmware by Dark_AleX that was copied earlier by the installer (step 3).
5) After the install, reboot your PSP. As you may have noticed you are now running a modified f/w by our homebrew community's very own Dark_AleX. :)
6) Go to USB mode. Copy your ISO and CSO (CiSO) images into the ISO folder.
7) Pop in any game UMD. Go to Game > Memory Stick > DEVHOOK0.4X launcher for 2.71 and then go to UMD SELECT in the menu. Choose your game, then click on START.
NOTE: Before you turn on your PSP, you must take out the UMD first! Once your in the PSP's menus, pop the UMD then go into DevHook and pick an ISO/CSO. This is based on my experiment and I've noticed that if you turn on your PSP with a UMD inside, it just freezes in a blank screen.
I hope this helps for those with questions and doubts. This is 100% working so far and I've had 0% brick on all PSPs. The beauty of this is, we no longer have to start off at 1.50, pick an ISO, then emulate 2.71 to play a game... Then go back to 1.50 again, pick a different game and start the whole process all over again. With this, it's 1.50 on 2.71 or 2.71 with 1.50. It's hot.
I also tried the following:

just wondering how to use the recovery from 2.71se-a and also why the downgrader does not work... i tried the generic "easy downgrader" and just keep getting error DADADADA, then i tried the old downdater that requires 1.5 firmware dump and it starts to work (flashes red screen) but at reboot i am still at 2.71 se-a. I've used the old downdater before so i know i am doing it correctly. Everything works great within SA-E. thanks for help/comments/suggestions
well i did this, and my psp runs cso's with no problem, but i can't run homebrew, like doom? wtf? anyone have a suggestion please?
im putting all the files in the right place but when i go to the game folder it dosent show a picture or anything !

i didnt like it, cause it didnt run my snes9xTYL
so i wanted to downgrade
so i used the generic downgrader
but i got a message saying
game could not be started
(DADADADA)
so i tried HEN C
no luck there either....
what do i do???
i want my snes9xTYL back... :)

all you have to do to downgrade is put the RECOVERY folder from the package into your PSP/GAME folder.
get the 1.50 update eboot rename it UPDATE.PBP and drop it into the RECOVERY folder.
turn off psp, power on + hold R shoulder key for recovery menu.
go to execute file at ms0:PSP/GAME/RECOVERY/UPDATE.PBP
and the rest you should know by now...!!!!
I had to post this because alot of people seemed to be confused as to how to do this...CANT imagine why, if they bothered to read the readme in detail (which i definatly would have done, you know with the chance of bricking my psp there and all!)

All good with the installation and HB, but the Gitaroo Man Lives (UK) UMD will not work with the custom 2.71 FW.
its pretty much what the title says anyone have any idea what it could be? I tried launching numerous amounts of times. Still no success. Am I supposed to convert the eboots for 1.5?
k. once i do all the steps...so on... and have 2.71-se-a.....do i need to have certain files in my memory stick, (like in fontmod that u need to have the modded registries).... and also is it possible for me to switch any memory sticks or i have to stay with one i started??well considering that the folders have the same name, like game150 and so on.
Never mind, I figured it out. They go in a different folder that is named GAME150 in the PSP folder.
hey what happened to the 2.71 se-a installer i donwloaded it when it came out now that im gonna use it i can't fint the page... i'm now scared that it was taken off the site to cover up bricks or somting plus its an installer with no info file so i dont know if i need any extra files....
it definately is not letting me load up me & my katamari, I think thats just a 2.6 firmware update on the disc too..

I succesfully upgraded to this custon firmware, but when I try running an ISO from devhook the psp turns itself off. Help please.
Updated to 2.71 SE and all perfect except WiFi. For some unknown reason my PSP will no longer scan and pick up my WLAN connection.
Any body else experiencing the same problem, any solution??

userguide of ir shell 2.2 so that i can use my psp to communicate directly with my pc:

just downgraded to 1.50 from 2.60 with
easy 2.5 2.6 downgrader. Do I have to upgrade to 2.71 then downgrade again for the 2.71 se a firmware to work?

I meant to say "dis firmware is da bomb!", but it was too late when I discovered that I mistyped it.
used it ungraded and noticed that all my h_b corrupt icons showed. i converted my games with sei psp tool and reverted to 1.5 hiding the psp icons. when i tried to boot the games up it froze in the loading screen. im gonna try 2 convert my games back to 1.0 and see if any diffence reviels. gonna suck if i got 2 downgrade again thats another flash to my ram
alright i upgraded then realized that u need a h-b tiff enablerhaving problems getting it to boot up since its a tiff and their not really reliable plus it dont run static elfs or whatever soo my 1,5 dont work, i think ill just downgrade untill he enables static elf h-b on it then ill return to this

ok.. I still havn't figured out how to either downgrade or upgrade. But I'v found out that the directory structure changes between up/downgrades. I can see this is going to be more.. like when I modded my xbox...but worse..and more dangerous (Brick) ...Ok... Hmmm anybody know where to get a guide? Something to tell me what files are what and loader programs, I know what homebrew and emulators are but a guide would be awsome.. like a *.pdf or something.. i really like this firmware its customizable now u guys would probly like my columbia.pmf uses mooost of the 1.5 games i got (and i got alot) most emulators worked for me xcept homers rin so i just downloaded the 1.0 version and wala hahaha thnks dark-alex for ust being so damn cool. oh and they were easy instructions but i didnt read the whole thing and almost had a panic attack when none of my emulators worked but its cool now ;>
Nice job there Dark Alex, its nice that i can play 1.5 homebrew with 2.71 features.
Later found out that half my homebrew didnt work on it so i downgraded back to 2.6, and use the TIFF eloader. (AKA my sega genesis emulator, snes emulator, nethack, pme, etc)

hey, thanks for this custom firmware! i am going to try doing this when i see what firmware is required for GTA VC. If I do install this custom firmware though...will I still be able to upgrade if I ever need to or downgrade if i need to for that matter?
I think it would be freaking awesome if he could get it to load with devhook, so as soon as you turn your psp on you could just user HOME+L/R to switch between ISO's and UMD. just make it all integrated, no more having to load devhook all the time. that would be sweet. aaah imaginen the possibilities, I'll stick with 1.5 since I still have to run devhook everytime I shutdown my psp.

and it works!!! thank you so much DA. i never need to think about 1.5 again (except for nostalga).
i only see a couple of problems.
the "hide corrupted icons" doesn't seem to work all the time, and when it does, only a few are hidden.
and also, in my emulators, they can't seem to find their roms folder. in, fact, they all see only one game folder (daedalus, i think) inside GAME150 (which is where all my stuff is). so i put them in folders in GAME, which seems to work.
but thank you so much for bringing new opportunities to all of us!

I think I know the answer here, but.. Would this allow CSO/ISO loading of 2.xx games using Devhook + NOUMD rather than Devhook + ANYUMD? My PSP has a dead UMD drive, still won't work after replacing it, tried two different drives from two different sources...
i appreciate the help im going to try it, but downgrading is what i initially tried. that's my problem, i thought dark alex's downgrader would allow me to downgrade to 1.5, it even says psp update ver 1.50, but it keeps saying the same message, so then i tried opening henc in the photoviewer and still no results, if i annoy you i understand, because i hated teaching people how to mod xbox's, but if you can, i would appreciate a more in depth explanation of the program i need for the downgrade

ok i have 2.70 and im trying to get the SE-A but i think i gotta follow the read me right...well if i do i really dont get this - Get the 1.50 and 2.71 sony updaters in the seupdmaker folder with the names "150.PBP" and "271.PBP". it doesnt show these files in the folder >.< plz help
First you gotta downgrade to 1.5 then run everything to get to SE-A
