Sony will introduce UMD-to-Digital Program for the PSP

Ó

Quell your initial excitement just a little, because this program is NOT the way for you to convert your UMDs for the PSP into digital downloads for the Vita (at least not yet anyway).

So far the program has only been confirmed for Japan, as you can see below, but you could expect that the initiative will be extended to international Sony PSP customers as well.

pspumd

This is not a new concept, with Sony having approached the idea earlier, but shelved the idea due to slipping PSP sales.

But, with the Playstation Vita release up on us, Sony is going ahead with the idea.

The service will be called the "UMD Passport" and will require you to download the UMD conversion program from the Playstation Store to your PSP.

After this, the steps are simple (not really). You need to then register the game with the PlayStation Network, pay a certain fee for the UMD-to-digital conversion (which will differ per game) and then download it.

The fee for the UMD-to-digital conversion will differ between publishers as Sony is giving them the right to determine what price they charge.

In the Sony press release they have said that the price will be reasonable, with Japanese PSP users looking to pay between 500 and 1500 yen per UMD conversion (between $6.50 and $20).

No word on how Sony could stop you from handing the UMD around to your friends to enable to digital conversion on their PlayStation Network account, but that will most likely come out in time.

Not all publishers will be available, as Sony will not be enforcing the program, but the press release did confirm that bigger publishers such as Capcom, SEGAAAA and Square Enix will be making their games available for digital conversion.

Should be free or less than a dollar.

These prices seem the same as buying the game from PSN. Maybe you get a 10% off for having the UMD, but at that price, it's easier to just do it for free, like we always have.

I don't really care about US game; however, i'd love to play my UMD imports on the Vita, especially Gundam vs Gundam and Climax Heroes. :D

Or.... I could just keep my PSP and play my PSP games on that maybe? And use the Vita for Vita games?

Surely if you plan on say taking the Vita on holiday with you, it's really not going to kill you to take the PSP as well?

You'd need to take the UMDs as well...
In this system you could just get it on the Vita, stop carrying the UMDs and PSP.

Also, it would be better playing some games on Vita like Gods Eater Burst, Shinobido, Monster Hunter, etc. games that would be better with two analog sticks.

The only problem is that these still cost too much seeing as the person would own the game already.

I 100% with you my friend. They're small items so it shouldn't be much trouble at all to bring both

Oh fuck this shit. I'm sick and tired of $ony trying to make a profit over every single little thing they can think of. I am NOT nor will I ever be interested in paying for the same copy of game I already own.
For this, I will be waiting on purchasing a vita until it can be modded to play my umd games.

Ultimately this is still them charging you more money for something you already own. I'm looking forward to seeing an R4 style NVG card for the Vita that can load homebrew. I would get one.

Yet another kick in the teeth from Sony. I love my PSP and have over 50 UMDs. Averaging out at approx £8 per game it would cost me around £400 to repurchase my games via Passport. Despite the large homebrew community, I chose to support the console I love with my hard earned cash. And for what?

Definitely agreed. They must think we as consumers are stupid (or lab rats?). An R4 style card would be way awesome. I'd gladly put some money into one of those, and also agree about the psp. I know I'm going to keep mine around even if I pick up a vita. Too bad for sony tho, after reading this, I'm rethinking a preorder of the system

My PSP go is small enough to carry with me, and I've transferred my 60+ UMD collection to ISO anyway. I'm quite happy using both.

You would think the conversion would be a fixed charge, I really can't see any justification as to why it should differ per title.

wtf paying for EACH umd conversion is a total jip. paying a one time fee to download the program that allows you to convert all your UMDs would be a lot better. i would be willing to pay like 10-20 for the program, but if you have to pay to convert EACH umd like you do now, then sony can suck it.
