NOTICE: No virus in the downgrader!!
We have been receiving reports that Norton Antivirus reports the MPH Downgrader is a Trojan.PSPBrick. Here we clarify that this is a misreport of Norton Antivirus. The MPH Downgrader we are hosting here is safe for use. The downgrader works on almost every PSP (except PSP-1007 Taiwan model). And if the downgrader fails to work, the chance of bricking your PSP is still tiny.
NOTE: So that everyone gets a chance to see this piece of news, we will be keeping this article at the top and putting new news below it for a while.
Welcome to 1.50, PSP firmware 2.0 users! MPH has created a WORKING downgrader from PSP firmware 2.0 to firmware 1.50. This takes advantage of the toc2rta exploit and allows for the full downgrade of firmware 2.0 to firmware 1.50. I have tried this myself and have successfully downgraded from firmware 2.0 to firmware 1.50. Homebrew and UMD games WILL both work after the downgrade.
UPDATE by Jeff: You will be able to upgrade back to 2.00 after downgrading. I've tried this by myself. So feel free downgrading!
Although this has been tried and found working, this does not mean there is no risk involved so use at your own risk.
Steps to use the MPH downgrader:
- Create an UPDATE folder in the /PSP/GAME/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy EBOOT.PBP (update 1.50) in /PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder
- Unpack MPHDowngrader.zip
- Copy overflow.tif in your /PSP/PHOTO/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy h.bin to root of your memory stick (meaning in ms0:/)
- Copy index.dat in root of your memory stick (meaning in ms0:/ as well)
- Plug the AC adaptor
You memory stick filesystem should look like this (where X is your memory sticks directory):
X:/h.bin
X:/index.dat
X:/PSP/PHOTO/overflow.tif (with no other pictures in there)
X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP (the 1.50 Firmware update eboot)
What you do next is go into the Photo Menu on the PSP and it will show some jumbled text, which is normal. Wait about 30 seconds and then restart your PSP.
From there you will now have a new file in your PSP’s root directory called ms0:/index.dat.bak. In the next step you will go to your Game Menu, Then Memory Stick, and then Launch “PSP Update ver 1.50.â€
It will then ask you if you really want to downgrade and then lead you along to the actual installing. Here is where I got scared. It installed to 99% then errored. This is OK. Restart your PSP and turn it back on. It will come up with another error which is OK as well. Restart it again and you will have PSP firmware version 1.50, and it will lead you through setting up language and time etc. Enjoy, and welcome to the world of legal homebrew, not piracy.

I've read the text from sonyxteam.com and about the new, better and more safe version of downgrader, the 1.0
But I've got a question.. DO I NEED A NEW EBOOT_1.50 FILE, or is it only a changed downgrader file I need?! I did only find the [MPH_SXT]Downgr ader1.0 but maybe thats all I need. It said it was less than 1% to brick it yeah?!

I keep having the problem with the psps freezing each time i enter the photo menu, it freezes for maybe ten seconds and shuts down on its own... i restart hoping to see the new index.dat.bak file but it never works, it continues to say " no need 2 update" , ive reformatted my pro duo, ive restored default settings,, all jus incase and it still doesnt work, and yes ive changed the background to framer_buffer.png, still nooooo success pllllease someone respond with something useful , ive made sure over a hundred times if the files are in the correct spot and this is how i have it JUS IN CASE i am wrong

12:06 I was having the same problem. I replaced the entire photo folder with the one included with the downgrader. that seemed to do the trick for me.

Downgrader works as promised, I had 1.5 updated to 2.0 just today to try out the downgrader. haha.
Works fine, don't keep the Browser or anything, it goes back to everything v1.5 had.
This is a great step, but I'd love to see v2.0 fully exploited so homebrew can run on it as well. the extras would be a nice touch. :)

About the WRONG REGION. You probably used a 1.5 ROM file that is not from your region. It may be from North America. You sound like you need one from the UK.
I'd upgrade back to 2.0. Then downgrade again using a ROM file from your region.

i have a jap 2.0, but all eboot files (1.5, 2.0 american) are titled "corrupted data" with a picture of a broken square as an icon. and when i load them it gives me the message "the game cannot be started, the data is corrupted" can anyone help?

I would advise everyone to get a copy of 2.00 upgrade now and keep it handy. I would imagine Sony will very soon close the exploit and release all future 2.0 upgrades with the exploit closed, rather than issue a 2.01 or 2.5. Reason being if they change the number, people will know not to upgrade. If they keep it at 2.0 but close the exploit in all future 2.0 upgrades, some people will use it thinking they can then just downgrade again.

First:
Try to format your memory card first before copying all the files over to the memory card.
Second:
Restore default before you start the downgrading process.

i have an odd question , possibly a stupid one.
If you downgrade a Japanese PSP from 2.0->1.5 then reupgrade with the US firmware... what happens to the UMD support? I'd assume that is embedded in the firmware somewhere. Has anyone tried this (or vice versa)?

This is absolutely amazing. I am extremely impressed, and am very grateful to MPH and co. Now I can send my 1.5 PSP in to Sony to get my stuck pixels repaired and not worry about what version PSP I get returned. But jeez...this is the 525th comment! That's a whole lot of people. Even though this is huge news, it's obvious that the homebrew community has grown immensely over the past several months. This downgrader will perpetuate and facilitate that trend.
As to the whole piracy argument...honestly, most people don't care about homebrew. Even though in your tiny little sheltered home it seems like the whole world cares about everything *you* care about, that's just not the case. As to the Dreamcast's failure, you really need to understand that people stopped buying DC systems (low hardware sales numbers are evidence), which resulted in a low software sell-through rate. The reason for this, of course, was that everyone was waiting for the much-hyped PS2 to come out. So quit it with the 'omg PSP is going down' rants.

ppl have said that sony is disguising 2.1 as 2.0, would they have done this to the demo disc?

Oh shut up 2.47! I live in New Zealand and our PSPs were 1.52 by default and no I wasn't going to import and risk getting dead pixels and no garrentee. Just to clarify I can confirm this does work on Australian PSPs. This is the best news the scene has had in months!
please, when u say it worked on your PSP, please state what kind of psp, a JAP, US, or EU. Some people do this, but not enough to answer people's questions about it working on EU PSP as well. To be honest.. I haven't heard anything about it working on EU PSP's at all.. SO IF U SAY IT WORKED, TELL WHICH PSP U USED! A HELL OF A LOT PPL WANT THIS ANSWER!

Actually...there have been several people who have posted about the downgrader working on all the differents kinds of PSPs: Japanese, US, and Euro, as well as Japanese 2.0 firmware on a US bought PSP. I don't expect everyone to read all 500+ comments, but don't make it sound as if you did so and still couldn't find the information you were looking for.
As to Sony losing money, I think I *just* pointed out that not many people pirate games. Outside of your shallow little sheltered world, the majority of PSP owners could care less about homebrew or just don't even know about it. Otherwise UMD movies wouldn't have sold so well...
If anybody from South Africa was wondering if it works for us, IT DOES! I just tried it, followed the instructions exactly as it was stated and everything happened as it was supposed to. Just a note, when switching off your PSP after the initial Tiff viewing it does take longer then usual. When you want to play the newer UMD games which require version 1.52 or 2.0 just use WAB's 2.5 version changer...
Sony will probably make games only work on 2.0, or give out a free UMD which only work on a newer firmware like 2.0.1
Well; your thinking in the past. We don't live in 1995 anymore and the internet is a free and able place for most people. People are gonna learn about this and think, why should I go out and spend £30 on a game when I can download it for free. Torrents for PSP games are already hitting the thousands, lets face it.
Sony has screwed this up big time, and its because they allowed us to run stuff from the mem-stick at the very begining.
Downgrade is revertable. Tested on european PSP. Downgraded to 1.50 with MPHDowngrader procedure and back to 2.00 with no snags.

I have asked him if it was written with Yoshihiro and Sonyxteam as they claim but no response as of yet. There are posts on there that claim MPH had nothing to do with the downgrade. All very confusing!

This is a stupid post. If all you want it your 'entitled' backup copy then you can use Fastloader 0.7 to dump the iso image of your owned game UMD onto your memory stick. I suspect you are just using the backup argument to get a link to other games you don't own.
Yeah, theres an eboot loader, but it can only load eboots that are 64kb in size, i think u'll agree tht sucks yeah?
Another great day for homebrew. Note I said HOMEBREW not PIRATING GAMES. Some of you wonder why Sony stamps down so hard on homebrew then turn around and brag about stealing games from companies?
Also, to the people who are complaining that this is not a big thing: don't be so selfish. European PSPs never have had 1.5 on them. Some even come with 2.0. This is a chance for people outside america to experience the homebrew you are so obviously bored with already.

yeah.. I got that too.. Its fine at 1.5 but when i try to upgrade to 2.0 I have a blank screen with an "x" and "o" at the bottom. It's an Aussie machine. Can anyone help?
Got mine from Japan and foolishly updated to 1.52 some time ago.
Using the v2 off the jap sony site, and following the guides as instructed, mine is now happily operating on 1.5

duuh.. how about searching the forums magness :-). Found the problem... Go into "System Settings" --> "Restore to defaults" and try the update again. UPGRADE worked fine after that worked fine..
So for all you Aussie folks.. Downgrade and Upgrade worked after a slight initial scare. I'm sticking with 2.0. Homebrew scene isn't as mature as I though and PSP game piracy doesn't intrest me... that much :-)
Maybe when a faster GBA & Amiga emu comes out :-)

Now I hope to God that new games simply won't work on 1.5s otherwise mass piracy could kill the PSP, please people keep buying games, we don't want the PSP to die. This is great news for 1.5 users like myself, as it means that I'll be able to play (and buy) all the great games coming out at Christmas and still keep my beloved homebrew.

It would have been a stupid post had I already know about Fastloader. Since I didn't, that would make your post stupid for assuming that I'm looking to pirate games. But, thx for the partial info on Fastloader. Now I've got my backups on my external drive just incase something bad happens.

Can you downgrade a Europe 2.0 PSP to 1.50 then upgrade to 1.52? My burnout UMD has 1.52 on it.
Has anyone with a certified working copy of the 2.00 eboot file -- in other words an archived copy on a disc somewhere -- compared that to the direct download available from the Sony website? I'm curious to see if Sony has changed the file at all in response to all this. In other words, is it still safe to use the direct download file to upgrade and then downgrade. I'm curious because there's that guy above who says his PSP is not letting him downgrade. Maybe that's a result of a new file on the Sony site? Who here is smart enough to pull off the comparison, or has the balls to download the file now from the site and try the downgrade again? I've been turning it over in my head, but I just can't get myself to try it.
OK Guys I took the risk - was kakking myself but it freaking works
I had a jap 1.5 and upgraded to 2.0 then used downgrader to go back to 1.5 - worked perfectly
I then said stuff it and repeated process - went back up to 2.0 then down again - work fine

The 2.0 FW doesnt works PERFECTLY. They are having troubles with the 2.0 browser: The PSP cannot connect to their WIFI browser, but before all the downgrade/upgrade process, it worked.
So, maybe there are not obvious problems with the 2.0->1.5->2.0

however i finally did it and it DOES work like a charm. i had to pull the battery out when y=i had to restart both times and that added to the nervousness but all is well!! i have never post anything before and wouldn't if ther was any problem but ther is not Great Job to all who figured this out

So I just tried Attack of the Mutants again and it worked fine after rebooting my PSP. I think there was just something wrong that cleared up after the reboot. It locked up 2 out of 2 times prior to the reboot but now it's fine. I just played it for like 30 minutes with no lock ups. Looks like everything is fine with the downgrade and there was just something wrong with my PSP that cleared up after doing a reboot. No worries.
This may sound impossible, but today I tried downgrading my 2.0 t0 1.5 and it say's 1.0 now.
I was freaking out when I saw jumbled text and thought I broke the PSP and kept pushing the power button off. For about 30 seconds it appeared to be frozen... It finally shut off... I was happy, but worried... I turned on the psp and it loaded as normal with no option to set to english etc...
I looked at the psp system setting and it say's 1.00
mac address: 00:01:4A:7F:14:f8
I tried lumines and it worked fine.
I tried madden 2006

I am not some one who is good at modifying and messed up initially trying to load this by not putting things in the root of the memory... By freaking out I somehow did something to mp psp which lowered it to 1.00 and able to surf the internet as if it was 2.00 I only hope I can get Madden 2006 to work with the WAB version changer 2.5

imdakine1, you didn't downgrade at all then. What the 2.0 - 1.5 downgrader does is make your PSP think it's really a 1.0 so that you can upgrade to 1.5. So basically you are halfway there. You have a PSP that thinks it's really a 1.0, but really is a 2.0, that's why the browser is there and everything. But you will NOT be able to play homebrew or any ISOs at this time. What you need to do is complete the task and now run the 1.5 firmware update that is supplied on the top of this page. You'll run that from your memory stick and let it do it's thing. You'll get some errors, just keep going and the results will be a 1.5 PSP. Read through the instructions carefully, it's all there. We all get excited too and don't read all the instructions sometimes, but for this, you really have to. Finish up the downgrade, per the instructions and let us know how you make you. Best of luck
Anyone know where I can d/l the "best" 2.0 upgrade? What I mean by that is, arn't the 2.0 updates diff. for US and Japan? So I just updated and downgraded just as instructions said. No problems at all, i'm an original 1.5 user. My settings however still say 1.5 not 1.0 as has been happening with some users?

Now. I don't care if this is not what you want. I don't care if you don't understand the instructions and I'd give credit but I'm sick of trying to figure who did what (MPH, you DO have my deepest thanks and respect). I'm including both the compressed original files and the uncompressed versions in this archive because I'm lazy. If you don't like it go somewhere else. Along with that I'm including, IIRC, a version changer/faker for the firmware and a dozen emulators that I used to test the downgrade. It all worked (there is one rom for the NES and one rom for the GB).
Download it if you want. Don't download it if you don't. I couldn't care less. I put this for friends of mine but decided if someone wanted to pick it from here they could.
Also, complain if you want. It's what you do best. You can do it better even when you have no clue what you're talking about.
It'll be there only for a while and probably won't be fast.
1.-I've run it. It works. You can downgrade to 1.5 and upgrade back to 2.0 if you so want.
2.-I've modified the README inside to be clearer. It wasn't, really, and didn't specify you would probably need to reconfigure your PSP losing your current settings (although it was implied)
3.-It's compressed as tgz. You don't know how to unpack it then go grow up somewhere else and come back when you know how to search the web.
4.-It contains the compressed original files and uncompressed versions inside. Why? Because this is not a public service and I don't care what you need. It was easier this way at the moment.
5.-I could have cared more. But I decided that 90% of the 'scene' is a ridiculous mass of whining pre-pubescent crybabies. No wonder the serious coders stay away of the 'scene' like the plague.
6.-No credit is given other than to MPH (and indirectly to toc2ra) because it's the only clear credit that should be given. When you finish complaining and crying to mommy and decide who did what then the people that do the hard work will be able to enjoy some well deserved recognition. All your bickering and stupid fanflaming and blamestorming are a disgrace and you should all be banned until you learn to behave. All this stupid name-calling and credit-stealing does not the traffic compensate.

For those who have tried the downgrader, but have had their PSP freeze when they go into the Photos,
simply hold your Power Switch up, until your PSP switches off, Reboot then go into Photos again, providing you have put all the files in their right places, you should see a black screen with some Digits, and yeah switch off your PSP again,
and yeah now you should now see your PSP is 1.00
then yeah run 1.50 update and all good

For us 1.5 users who are thinking of trying out 2.0 (and then going back to 1.5), it's not worth it. Wait for the 2.0 partial firmware that will allow you to add a web browser to your 1.5. It's known to exist. So be patient and enjoy your homebrew/emulators/ISOs in the meantime.

I assume that the guy with the wi-fi problem merely forgot to turn WLAM Power Save off. This was an issue in my 1.5 that didn't allow my PSP to connet wirelessly to my router.
wow, so many comments, anyway works for me had 2.0 US, and now i have 1.5, but i really dont understand what all the fuss was about, i got quite a few homebrew apps and games working, but i mean seriously. WHATS THE BIG DEAL. its not as good as i thought it would be. im thinkin of goin bak to 2.0. i know you'll say its pointless because theres a partial update coming, but i see no point in the Homebrew scene. unless some1 can show me any REALLY good program/game then i might stick with it. also i think that this exploit was left by sony on purpose to see if anyone can hack it. and now that MPH (Miles per hour lol)has done, i think sony will recruit him/them. so congrats ur part of SONY!!!!
To the people saying this will make the PSP go the same way Dreamcast did: Look at the PS2. It's one of the most commercially successful consoles EVER, and it's been pretty easily exploitable for several years now... The console/games are still selling very well, considering the PS2's age.
The reason Dreamcast died was lack of developers for the console... it was a marketing problem, not a homebrew/piracy issue. Think a bit about it, and and sure most of you agree with me...

anon 9:52use Humma latest fast loader, it werks for me, i have two EU movies(kill bill, spiderman) and they werk great with it. i had some problems with my wifi conecting after i d-graded for the 20th time, so i just updated and degraded again and it was fine, although when i do the whole photo up[date thingy i get this error.

Accidently unplugged the ac adaptor during downgrade...around 33% and it still worked fine. Various applications/emus ran excelent. Good Job!
Resumé:
For people still wondering about if it works or not, and don't want to read the 6hundred posts, then this will do.
I ran the 1.5 downgrader on a 2.0 European PSP.
Though originally I bought the PSP with firmware 1.52 on it, after installing the downgrader, and running it, I noted my PSP telling me it ran firmware 1.0.
During installation, please open the battery cover. You'll need to remove the battery twice everytime you need to restart.
I noted my PSPS would not reset with the powerbutton. After installation, I removed the adaptor, and battery. Then reconnected it.
This is what this downgrader probably does:
It will cause a sort of buffer overflow, causing your PSP to system reset to factory defaults (PSP firmware 1.00)
After the installation of firmwareupdate 1.5 some errors came to the screen.
After testing all the functions, I noted, that:
- The theme selection in config settings is gone. (You'll always have a purple background)
- The browser is gone (not interesting anyways.. Browsing is for big screens)
- Most programs work like they did before
- Some video's might not play back properly.
- Video mode 4:3 in update 2.0 still works properly after the 1.5 downgrade, even though yourpsp.com says it has only been added in 2.0
- A/B function of video repeat is not there anymore
- As far as I can see, the audio options of 2.0 still remain the same in 1.5 (eventhough yourpsp.com says it's been added in ver 2.0)
- MP4 (AVC, & AAC) and ATRAC3 plusâ„¢ format playback not yet tested -> use MP3.
- WAV format not recognised
- No characters selectable in built in keyboard (use PC with Wlan or USB cable to rename files that need characters)
- No wallpaper function anymore, meaning unless homebrew has a program, you'll have to do with the purple background)
- Image transfert between 2 PSP's using ad hoc mode (Wireless connection) is no longer there (send images via PC)
- No more capable of seeing pictures in BMP or TIFF format (save them as .jpg or .gif.; if necessary in the Windows paint program).
Translation.... you lose a lot of pointless **** compared to what you gain

The battery only needs to be removed to shut down the PSP, everytime you need to shut it down.
For the rest it seems my PSP is working like it should. Now time to test some homebrew ^_^

Japanese 1.0 PSP upgraded to 1.50 then 2.0 (by Sony Japan when sent in for repairs).
1. downloaded the MPH file, extracted and placed the files it had in their correct locations to a freshly formatted memory stick.
2. downloaded the Japanese 1.50 firmware updated, dropped the EBOOT.PBP file in the correct place noted in the readme.
3. Opened the PHOTO folder, the image immediately caused a Memory Stick write, and then froze with two or three lines of seemingly random hex/text at the top of the screen.
4. Waited 30 seconds just to make sure, then shut the PSP down completely by holding power switch for 4 seconds.
5. Booted back up, checked the System Information, PSP displayed it thought it was on 1.00 firmware (as this program should fake it to believe).
6. Ran the 1.50 Japanese firmware EBOOT.PBP file that shows up in the GAME directory (where any firmware update normally belongs), came up with the exact same screens and prompts as I saw when upgrading the PSP from 1.0 to 1.50 earlier. Went through the prompts, got to 99% done, then the screen said I needed to contact Sony for support because something is wrong (normal per MPH instructions).
7. Shut the baby down completely, then booted it up. Said OK when the PSP asked to reset all settings to default because they were currentely messed up. System rebooted automatically, then went right into a “new out of the box†PSP setup menu sequence - set time, name, etc.
8. Formatted the Memory Stick once again now that the files are not to be used again, dumped my favorite emus, and YES!!! 1.50 Japanese PSP successfully downgraded from 2.0 Japanese FW! =O =O =O =) =) =)
THUS, THERE IS A ‘PSP†™ GOD OUT THERE!!

1. Keep in mind that this will work just fine in downgrading your 2.0 PSP to a true 1.50 PSP with full future upgrade capabilities. The only 'major' thing the MPH program does is to 'trick' the system into believing it is a 1.00 FW PSP even though it is still on 2.0. This bypasses the FW version check of the EBOOT.PBP 1.50 upgrade file, and allows the PSP to load it (rather than simply saying no can do, you already have a later version). You're not getting any 'funny' firmware changes or mods.
2. Yes, this is a 100% FULL re-flash back to 1.50. You will lose ALL 2.0 features, such as the web browser, TIFF/GIF/PNG support, AVC MP4 playback, etc. However, keep in mind that the majority of users will have JPG files, MP3 audio files, and just about everything you can get your hands on is in the correct PSP MP4 H.264 format, so you really won't be losing much at all. 1.5 version 3rd party web browsers are available as well, so there you go.
3. Wish I was brave enough to 'risk' it, but I'd rather keep my Japanese PSP alive rather than brick a $$$ import to see if the region lock can be bypassed with a US flash. BUT, I believe the lock is not in the firmware, but elsewhere in the hardware/flash of the system according to talk elsewhere. Thus, those who previously used a US 1.50 to upgrade their 1.0 JPN PSPs found that the region lock remained the same. I wouldn't bother testing this at all given this information.
What I'd do is a) wait for a region patch b) trade to any US PSP (you can find truckloads at local GameStop stores) - you don't have to worry which version you get in trade yet because Sony hasn't yet released anything beyond 2.0 to prevent downgrading.
In the meantime, that's what those large Memory Sticks are for + PSP Video converters. Just too bad I can't take advantage of those cheaper US UMD prices....
4. Please do read and follow both my posted notes (page 2 of this thread) and the original MPH instructions in the download! They will tell you everything you'll experience on the way in and out of 2.0 and you'll be fine as long as you don't change anything.
Do keep in mind that 1) your MPH download should be error-free (download from two different PSP sites if you need and do a binary compare) 2) same goes for the important 1.50 EBOOT.PBP file (like that other guy said in this thread, he had a EBOOT.PBP that had errors) - two downloads from two different sites, binary compare them. If one of these two gets messed up, you can brick the PSP instantly during the downgrade.
It is not good to rush during this initial prep. phase at all - take another half hour more if you need to read up on everything and make sure you understand everything that you need and will happen to the letter.
Yes, do PLUG IN THE AC Adapter! You will need this and the FW will complain and stop if you don't have it plugged in (and dumb, too if the battery fails during the downgrade).
Other than that, once you've got everything in the proper locations the downgrade happens in seconds, and is painless and easy. (follow the MPH instructions!)
5. No need to change the wallpaper at all - I had my custom up, did the MPH downgrade, and everything worked fine on my JPN PSP.

That said, STILL Happier than a Clam here after Sonic the Hedgehog booted up on the Genesis emu =) =) =) =) =)

Can someone give the above guy some erm...... Assistance...
1. Removal of the battery is not needed. Simply hold the power button down for 4 seconds and the unit will fully power down. This is all you need to do between the steps noted above and in MPH's instructions. (Worked fine for me and my JPN PSP)
2. No need to say what's missing vs 2.0 FW item by item. In fact, no need to list any of those different features at all. The PSP will be running a full 1.50 FW after this, and it will run 100% like any other 1.50 PSP afterwards. No added features, no removed features - just pure 1.50 FW PSP.
3. For those clueless, use the same-language/country FW as your PSP originally shipped with! Don't tempt fate and use a US 1.50 FW with a JPN PSP (even though it may work). You never know what the very minor differences in system are, and whether a cross-flash will prevent a future feature/upgrade/etc.
4. Now, keep in mind that 2.0 homebrew games are out and in progress, but without some way to get into Kernel mode to take over the PSP completely, you won't get past the fact that you can't do Everything as it stands now. Thus, 2.0 homebrews w/o kernel mode access won't be the same as a 1.50 with homebrews.
5. Those too chicken can simply go to any Gamestop store, ask to see if their used PSPs are working before buying, check and test to see that it's a 1.50 FW model, and trade. They're really good and easy with this, and it's painless if you don't like testing downgrader programs.

Congratulations . I have a 1.50 but I wouldn't mind upgrading to try out 2.0 for the browser. Maybe we'll get a browser next or further hack the 2.0 to allow all the homebrew we have now on 1.50. Awesome that this happened! I have had a 1.50 for a long time, but if this never happened, I'm sure homebrew would slowly come to a death. KICK ASS.
After doing everything by the book above, I went to "PHOTO" and waited. The PSP was turned of another seconds later.
The thing is - I do not get a index.dat.bak in the root - just the index.dat-file.
Anyone else got this problem?
Don't want to go to the next step and try to dl before I have solved this.

HEY 11:56AM guy, Odds are that you LEFT the downgrade files in the Memory stick(index.bak.dat or something like that) and THAT may have caused that to happen on your 2nd PSP..I have an ORIGINAL 3/24/05 1.5 PSP and bought a 2nd one Yesterday. I used the Sony 32Meg card to do the downgrade and then put that away since I have a 1gb and 512 memory stick cards, I have no use for the 32meg card again. SO MY suggestion is USE the Sony 32 memory stick to downgrade and Then format that card AFTER downgrading if you're going to use it for saving games or on other PSPs

I just spent my morning tampering with my PSP after reading many of your comments... so i thought i would pass along my experience as of 9-30-05 at 1pm. I started with a v1.5 firmware PSP. I bought Madden 06. Got home, and apparently Madden 06 doesn’t like v1.5 firmware, it wants 1.52. I already had the NesterJ emulator with tons of games on my PSP, and have been really happy with it... but i wanted to play madden AND have my NesterJ still work. After reading someone’ s post, i thought i could have my cake and go fat girl too. So I followed the directions on this site.

The directions were great.
I upgraded to 2.0 via sony site. Madden worked.
Then i converted back to 1.5 using the instructions on the site under the false assumption that Madden would still work. It didnt. I wasnt 100% expecting to work, but some forum writer said it did. Regardless... No sex in the champagne room, No Madden 06 on the reinstalled 1.5. Im sure i could upgrade to 2.0 again, but with all the NES games i have on this puppy, im not sure i'll bother.
Then I tried doing a hot swap of games… that didn’t work either. So I ended the day where I started, with a Madden 06 game that might not be used very often. So in conclusion, Madden 06 is too slow loading for it to be a good or great game… I’ll stick to wipeout pure and a boatload of NES games.

All those praising yoshi all of the sudden, do keep in mind that the way of downgrading they're using now wouldn't have been possible without the tiff buffer overflow. Or in other words, no matter what, he still lied about being able to downgrade before.
He just got lucky someone else found a way in (not saying he had nothing before, but definatly not enough for a working downgrade).

Well, this is great. Hopefully it's only a stopgap measure until someone figures out how to run homebrew stuff on 2.0; I'd like to upgrade for the web browser at some point.
If you have alternative backgrounds on your PSP and want the original backgrounds back, you'll get them when you downgrade. Kind of a nice 2 birds - one stone deal.

Even if you can't upgrade to 2.0 after doing this (I haven't checked this yet), you will be able to upgrade eventually -- Sony doesn't want to lose you as a customer. Also, whoever said PSP-dev found the TIFF exploit, I can personally verify that YOU DON'T KNOW SHI*, so stfu. Street cred. and donations for exploits are for suckers. Write some real software, then ask for some $$$.

However...
I was mulling this downgrading/hacking 2.0 business over in my head today... I couldn't help thinking of the poor Dreamcast, and how it had its life cut horribly short because it was so easy to pirate the games... I was thinking that maybe it's a good thing that there was no way of downgrading and that making sure people buy games will ensure newer and better games get released.
Let's hope everyone proves me wrong and at least buys the odd game now and then :)

I have a Jap 1.50 PSP but would like to upgrade to 2.00 (and back again obviouslly!). BUT all the 2.0 updates I've tried have no text in ???
When it is ran I get the PSP logo bit at the start, then a blank screen with 2 lines and the icons at the botom for the cross and circle buttons ?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

index and h files on root of memory stick

pluged the power cable and disconected the usb cable
i went to my photo on my psp and it freezes for a sec then shuts down the psp nothing apears on the screen even if i wait 30 sec. then i turned the psp back on went to do the 1.5 update but it says i have version 2.00 and there is no need to update.
so can anyone who knows what i did wrong? thanks

I dont think its a good idea to downgrade with this loader even if it works, because its not fully updating the firmware theres 1% of data missing and thats allot for firmware so people who have a 1.5 psp dont upgrade and downgrade again just stay with 1.5. Its not a problem for people who have 2.0 because they can upgrade again to 2.0 if there is something wrong in 1.5

The guy abocve me is correct. DOnt upgrade and downgrade just to test the browser. i think the stuff missing mgith just be minor stuff, in fact it might just be that that last % is the part where the PSP checks the firmware and the reaosn it errors is cuz it detects an older firmware? probably not, but it doesnt matter.
And to the guy at 2:12, You need to ahve the overflow.TIF as the ONLY file in the photo folder when you do it. And leave your chareger in the whole time and dont have your USb connected unless you are checkign to see the file was created ro uploading the 1.5 update.

the overflow tif is the only file i have there and my psp is charged at 100% but still nothing happend it just freezes for a sec then the psp turns off.

It works fine for me - Euro PSP, originally 1.52. Upgraded to 2.00 using the demo disc supplied.
The exploit seems to work best if you power the machine down, power it up, go into system information, then go to the photo viewer.
I got the "failed at 99%" / system settings corrupt error, but the machine works with no problems. I also upgraded back to 2.00, which completed with no error.
Hang on a sec... Isn't it possible to put an iso loader eboot, in place of the updater???

This is really great news. I was thinking of upgrading to 2.0, and now it's possible to have it both ways i suppose.
My question is, for any of you who have have had 1.5 and 2.0 firmwares, is the 2.0 AVC video format really that much better than regular mp4 video. I don't need a browser really, but I would be anxious to see how much better AVC video for the 2.0 is, given that it's still resolution limited. I know the answer can vary depending on encoding settings, so let's assume that we're comparing the best MP4 quality with the best AVC quality. Is the difference really that significant? Is it worth upgrading for (even though it looks like I'll still be able to go back to 1.5 if i need to)
Any feedback would be appreciated.

FYI: The "1% of data missing" is actually not missing. It doesn't complete the last 1% of the UPDATE process, which probably is nothing more than resetting the system.

As previous members would probably remember, some of PSP-Media.com's staff have their own little hacking projects chugging along.
Well now, the co-admin of PSP-Media.com is almost done completing a Partial Firmware 2.0 Upgrade.
This upgrade only works for v1.5 firmware users. It allows a user to enjoy the benefits of firmware 2.0 (such as AVC support, browser, and new games), but SUSTAINS the homebrew capabilities of the 1.5 firmware.
Good stuff, expect to see a release sometime soon (although not specified by PyroSama so we don't get flamed).

You have to use the overflow file that comes with the MPH downgrader. It's different to the original overflow tiff.

sonyxyteam and yoshihiro are frauds and there is no [MPH-SXT] downgrader. MPH and toc2rta are the only ones that deserve any credit for this downgrader.
Don't support thieves. Use the downgrader that's posted right here on PSPUpdates and nothing else. Not to mention there is at least one fake downgrader that will brick your PSP floating around the net.
Your only safe option is to get the one from this site and it will get the job done provided you follow directions well.

i did everything it said to do, but it says that i am currently using 2.00 and it wont downgrade. any ideas?
I tried this but it frozzz for alot of times but I put some photos and started to deleat them on the way down I got the mesage and it finly worked. Befor I said to my self that there was no hope for 1.51 and 1.52 so I downloaded 2.00 a few days ago. And you know what 2.00 IS good for a upgrade lol.

i had the same problem, make sure when the black screen with lots of random words/letters comes up wait 30 sec. before shutting the psp off. then run 1.5 update from the game folder

For the guy looking for the root of the memory stick, just open up the drive for the psp and when you see the psp folder that is the root and that's where you would place the two files..
maybe there ort to be a poll asking how many people have downgraded there PSP's?

Read the ****ing instructions and follow them to the letter - you are worried about bricking your precious PSP but you can't follow simple instructions - one would think that you know this is risky so you should of made sure that all the files were in the correct folders and the correct steps were taken and in the correct order before you proceeded
I'll say it again - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS - if you don't and brick your PSP you're an idiot and shouldn't own one - get daddy to buy you an english tutor instead

Before we celebrate, we should first wait until a reliable source tests it and addresses the following questions...
1. Will homebrew run on this system, or not?
2. What about umds, do they still work properly?
3. If the firmware is dumped after the downgrade is complete, does it have any differences compared to the original 1.5 firmware?
Until these questions are addressed by somebody with credibility, and that person creates an unedited video demonstrating the downgrade and shows us in the video that everything works after downgrading, we should be careful. Previous downgrade attempts and fake dowgraders have screwed up psp systems before.

Nope, I'm with you, Anon 4:04...I'm one of the few people who will admit to loving the new features of 2.0 enough to lose out on homebrew for a while.
This is definitely a great development, but I need that AVC support (and the web browser's pretty cool too, even though I have Wipeout Pure, so it doesn't matter).
I just hope the devs don't give up on cracking 2.0 just because 2.0 users can downgrade.

PAY ATTENTION if you have questions about the process.
When you first go to the photo viewer your screen will turn black with a lot of characters all over. This is good.
When you run the update it will crash at 99%. This is good. When you retart the thing it will be 1.5
Don't panic.
I can also personally confirm that it works with Japanese PSPs. Mine was JP 2.0 and now it is 1.5

Concerning the comments on the Atari 2600 and Dreamcast ... there are people out there STILL homebrewing for the Atari 2600. The system never died, they just stopped making the console. The same is true for the Dreamcast as well.

Yeh, I got as far as the photo thing, numbers came up, i resetted the PSP, but when i go to the game menu and memory card, i just get a Corrupted data file. I've tried downloading the eboot several times, ive unzipped it before moving a million times and i still get this. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I can confirm that I have successfully used a Jap 2.00 PSP to downgrade to 1.50 using the above method, then upgraded to 1.52 and upgraded to 2.00 and then downgraded back to 1.50 again successfully. Just a shame that if I want to play burnout, I need to keep on upgrading again.
Arnok, I've got a Australian version PSP which, just like the Eruos came with 1.52. I've used the downgrader and can tell you now that I am happily playing super mario world for SNES on my PSP! I am stolked! I don't think it flashes the firmware, it actually replaces the firmware version entirely from scratch. I had the same concern but I've tried it and it works. IT BLOODY WORKS! Make sure you follow the instructions closely with regard to the overflow.tiff file and stuff too.
Just a shame that if I want to play burnout, I need to keep on upgrading again.

i have old jap 2.0. something isnt working. the version changer installs and says i have v1.00. but when i start the update, it never starts installing 1.5. it just says that the datas corrupted and displays a screen that only says system software version. someone want to tell whats up with it?

I understand your sentiment but I'm a bit unsure of your accuracy in the DS taking over. However, you are right - I suspect it is too much to expect people not to use isos just because it is immoral. This downgrade should be used for homebrew and nothing else. Ooo, there is a flying pig.
ok, so everyone who was late on buying a PSP, has now been saved by MPH. i dont wanna heard a single person buy 2.5, and come on here crying that homebrew doesnt work and they need a downgrader. in the beginning it was 1.5 for us americans..... MPH has blessed the scene with a 2.0 downgrade. lets take advantage of this and stock up on an extra psp before our 1st ones break.
Ability to run homebrew does not equal the stealing of new games. There are a ton of programs that kick all sorts of ass in the homebrew scene...sure there are a group of people out there that pirate, but I bet it'll get harder and harder as the games get bigger. With a capacity of 1.8 gigs on a disc, it'll be a pain in the ass for the common person to play any emulated games. Think of it this way: PS2ers can easily mod their playstation with a 50 or so dollar modchip. To play the highest capacity games (or even medium), the PSP user will have to shell out around 4 times that. PS2 emulation isn't rampant, it happens, but it's not rampant. I believe this will happen with UMD's as well...or maybe i'm totally wrong. :P

I here this down grader is quite the illmatic. I'm gonna wait about a month or so then I will upgrade to 2.0, try it out then go back to 1.5 again. This is cool ish! now they need to find a way to hack 2.0! so that homebrew can be played on it, have this downgrader as a temporary thing to hold us off.

I had a 1.52 when I originally bought this, and immediately updated to 2.0 for the internet use, then found out that small amounts of homebrew were coming out for 1.52. Now that I've had 2.0 for a while, I've found out that I barely use the internet on my PSP, so performed this downgrade.

We wanted to warn the users that the fiirst beta downgrader version released by MPH is VERY Unstable ! It has about 5 to 10% chances to brick your psp when using it, because it writtes directly on the flash offset and that can be very dangerous, uf the offset changes just a little it will overwrite another file than index.dat, and that will brick your psp without doubt !
However that issue had been fixed on v1.0 , the probability to brick your psp using v1.0 is less than 1%.
We still want to remind you that we still give credits to MPH for taking part on the downgrader creation, (as he did gave credits to SXT as well), and will be added in any future downgrader version based on the one we devlopped together. So althrough 1.0 Final was entirely coded by yoshihiro and finished by yoshihiro, we give credits to MPH for it as well, as it's still based on the beta version where we worked on it together.
(Especially MPH and Yoshihiro, as yoshihiro found the lflash writting code on 2.0 working overflow exploit, and MPH and yoshi both had the index.dat idea, MPH created and compiled the first beta version from the knowledge and data he and yoshi acquired together).

Us 1.5ers have been using this little program called the wab version changer and/or pspset. It lets us fool our psp's into thinking they are 2.0's however our homebrew still works as does our umd's that require the latest firmwares.... what a novel idea :))

I request a change to the news post that includes a statement that Yoshihiro had nothing to do with it. Yoshi and SonyxTeam are just a bunch of talentless hacks that try to steal credit from those on the scene that are making the breakthroughs. It makes me want to puke that I see the downgrader on SonyxTeam's website with the SXT label on it. They even had the nerve to say to avoid PSPUpdates because they didn't mention SXT.
As a fellow coder it makes me really sad to see people praise Yoshi, SXT, and even WAB for this. Please give credit where it's due.
I sent an e-mail to pspupdates, letting them know that you are able to downgrade using 1.5 from UMDs. I have confirmed this with a US copy of Coded Arms.

to everyone whose psp freezes and reboots when u get to photo folder, when it reboots - just go once more to the game folder and run 1.5 update again, then it will show the lines of numbers etc. as described in how-to, worked like that for me at least.

I have a happy ending. I downloaded the WAB Version Changer 2.5, and it worked fine. Actually it works better than fine... I changed my version to 1.52, i can play Madden 06, and WITHOUT changing back to version 1.5 I can run nesterJ.
To answer J.20's question, I downloaded and installed the v2.0 firmware from Sonys site at approx 1pm today EST, and i could run the hack.

1. When GTA:LC comes out do you think anyone can make it so you can play it on a psp 1.5 (im pretty shure thell make it so you have to have the most recent upgrade to play it.

You can play homebrew and upgrade/downgrade as much as you want. I would reccomend getting the 2.0 upgrade downloaded now in case Sony decides to sneak one by us and stealth patch the exploit.

Ok. So I gather I can go 2.0->1.5->2.0->1.5 etc. I gather using a version changer will let me run Burnout Legends etc. So, what will this do to the wallpaper function? If I have something set as wallpaper, is it just going to go to the default current-month-colored wallpaper/theme? Is there a step I have to take before I go to 1.5 so that the background of the PSP doesn't just mess up for good? If that makes any sense?
And so then using the version changer,

hey people I just bought burnout legends and my little brother updated me to 1.52 . so, I update it again to 2.0 through the network update menu and I tried all the steps to downgrade and I wouldn't do it. when I go to photo and try to release the hack, the psp freezes. I tried to set the frame_buffer.png to background and it doesn't take it. so I should I do? ooh I forgot, one other thing when I go to game folder and hit the 1.50 downgrade the psp says "the system software on your psp system is version 2.00. there is no need to update."
anon@5:09 - the version changer JUST changes the version number. it's not a version upgrader.
The background can be set on 1.5 PSPs by using PSPSet or PSPersonalize.

Jap import (in the UK) - was running v2 Jap firmware, now won't startup - screen light comes on then gibberish on the screen. :( Have removed the battery but no joy. Can the v2.0 downgrader corrupt the firmware? No amount of resets or leaving the battery out can get the PSP to restart again - arse! :(

...Noob question... Has Sony came out and said we don't want the public playing homebrew and such on the PSP system, or did they just say it by making it hard with updates such as 2.0? Because I do believe, I may be wrong, that it is legal to play rom images you own for for example Final Fantasy or Punch out wich I own. So by using the PSP for what you own should be O.K. if Sony did'nt say other wise in their user agreement. Though I do understand there are people who pirate the stuff which is the real issue. Question posed, ...Is homebrew against the PSP user agreement?...

my freind tried to updated but didn't he forgot he didn;t have the charger so he just turned it off in the PHOTO menu but when he turned it on he had 1.0 but still had the browser is this some kind of miracle ? I put this in the furums for more details

My UK PSP downgraded perfectly. Whilst it was incredibly nervewracking whilst it went through the steps, everything went to plan and can do everything that you should be able to on a 1.5.
Although the only homebrew I've used so far is fastloader to run my iso umd backups.
Don't be afraid! But don't hold me responsible if it goes wrong either...

well imo if dev have this working 2.0 then all they have to do is work on 1.5 rather then keep working on 2.0 but if other dev like 2.0 and want to keep working on 2.0 they can but not a lot of people will have 2.0 unless those that didnt downgrade

socom ftb beta users: if you downgrade to 1.5, you will have to run a version changer to be seen as a 2.0 to avoid update from the socom public beta disc.

I agree however the best new idea for homebrew is to get the firmware emulator working so we can
a: run 2.0 firmwares on our shiny 1.5's for avc video and browser of course.
or
b: run 1.5 or lower firwares on a shiny 2.0 system to obviously play homebrew.

I have PERSONALLY upgraded a 1.5 US to 2.0 US and then DOWNGRADED -- WITHOUT BRICKING MY PSP
I have not, however, tried upgrading again -- I see no reason to. I just wanted to test the web browser for a short period of time. It works well. The downgrader does work -- EVEN THOUGH IT 'FAILS' AT 99%! -- When you reboot, the 1.5 firmware says that it can't read your configuration and you must press Circle to reset to default values. Once that is done, YOU'RE 1.5!
1.5'ers you know you dont need to reupdate to 2.0 now to play games that require the update- nor do you need the Wab update changer. Just have an older umd game on hand that doesnt require the firmware update to play. Click on the umd sysbol in games on the menu once you see the white screen and the psp logo eject the umd game ands place in the game that requires the fireware update. Thsi effectively is well like the swaploit trick used for the ms duo cards only now we are using the umd gams instead. the psp reconizes the game disc is legit and lets it run then you halt this process and use a game like madden 06 or whatever and it loads up- go from tony halk to white screen with psp logo- eject psp umd disc at this point place in madden 06- games go to go! ez pezy

I have a Jap 1.50 PSP but would like to upgrade to 2.00 (and back again obviouslly!). BUT all the 2.0 updates I've tried have no text in ???
When it is ran I get the PSP logo bit at the start, then a blank screen with 2 lines and the icons at the botom for the cross and circle buttons ?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Does it not bother anyone else that it never reaches 100%? Maybe there is some tiny bit of data that isn't included when you perform the downgrade and it will only be noticed in the next few days/hours. People have said that it is fine to update back to V2.00 but even still, it worries me slightly that the install never reaches 100%.

I just tried this method on my 2.0 Psp. I very carefully followed all of the instructions and can confirm that it works 100%. I can also confirm that homebrew can be run after the downgrade. Since I already have another 1.5 Psp, I was not afraid to try this out so if anyone is worried, dont be cos it works!!!!

I have a ceramic white psp with 2.0jp.
I've followed the instructions to the exact detail, and everytime I open the photo folder my screen turns black or brown slightly distorted, then shuts off in less than 15 seconds.
I turn it back on and browse to the 1.5 update and attempt to run it, "The system software on your psp system is version 2.0, there is no need to update.

Try waiting at least 30 seconds at that messed up FIRST STEP they tell you, (where you wait for the weird letters on the screen when you go to pictures). If you don't wait long enough .. its probably not going to work .... hope that helps... cant believe it .... WHO MADE THIS BTW? wheres their website.. i want to personally congradulate them..... thanks guys

Check your version number. If it now says 1.0, go run the eboot. You will lock up on the first step, rtfm and all that.

its real simple pop in a umd game that is older and doesnt request a fireware update- like wipe out or tony hawk. Go to the game icon on your psp's menu launch the game- the screen excutes the psp logo animation- you know the white screen with the psp logo- when this happens eject the umd game and place in the umd game that requires a firmware update- like madden 06 or coded arms. you have like 10 seconds or so to do this. the game will run now. It's alot like the swaploit trick with the ms duo cards. I wonder if someone can write a fake launcher.. so you wouldnt have to swamp the umd at all

The truth is, following message board posts, MPH knew what he was doing as he has previously proved with his firmware emulator. Yoshihiro of pspxteam saw how close he was getting with his downgrader and he immediatly began instant messaging MPH in an attempt to get some sort of credit in the development of the downgrader. He provided "failed" results to MPH, and MPH has stated that he is NOT in the SonyXteam.
We at psp-spot give FULL credit to MPH for his creation of the downgrader, it takes a lot of balls to post someone elses work on your website and claim it as your own, which is exactly what sonyxteam has done.
We congratulate MPH once again on his succesful creation of the downgrader, and due to popular request he has now offered a way to give thanks back to him by way of PayPal donation.

I am usually too busy laughing at noobs to post anything this obvious but there are a few
repeatedly ask questions that shouldn't need to be answered but they've been asked.
In order to prevent ‘assumedà ¢â‚¬â„¢ knowledge, here are some facts.
*This post is also enlightening for those who think they loose "everything"
if they were to downgrade 2.0 to 1.5
1st: "After downgrading, you loose Themes so you are stuck with the purple B.G."
Answer: If these people knew anything about the PSP, they would know that the
color is purple only because it’s September. Wait 3 days or change the date to a new
month then restart to find yourself with a different color.
*As a side thought, did everyone forget about PSPersonalize and the other few
programs that followed with that great feature? In case you did forget, it’s a homebrew
app. that will take 12 appropriately named photos from ms0:/ and turn each one into
that months designated background.
2nd: "I'm not going to downgrade to 1.5 because I can't play my 2.0 UMDs."
Answer: Wrong again! There are a few homebrews (WabVersionChan ger being one)
that will "Trick" your system into thinking it’s a different version than what it really is
(Ex. you can have a 1.5 and make it look like a 2.0 in the System Information section).
This will of course bypass any forced network or UMD updates. For those who will
try to overlook the obvious, no this is not the same as the 2.0 downgrader (*at least
to the best of my knowledge) and since it requires the homebrew functionality that 2.0
currently lacks, you’re left in the same situation that everyoneâ€℠¢s been in = waiting.
3rd: This is for all those stressing about or actually causing piracy. First and most
importantly is that this new downgrader is not an excuse for piracy but then its
also not going to get Sony to stop production either. The only use for this should be
to play legal homebrew and get access to the first shells etc…
For those who believe homebrew will be the end of the PSP here is what I have to
say: ----are you ready?----ok here it is----plain and simple----“It won’t be!â€Â
In fact, pushing the limits actually caused the upgraded features from Sony’s 2.0
-PSPersonalize: gave them the background idea.
-pspVideo9: showed them that limiting the media formats was pointless.
-Wipeout Pure: showed them how much we wanted it to have a browser.
None of these were used for piracy and they gave us the PSP control we desired.
If the limits weren’t pushed, we would never know what the PSP could truly do.
=Overall this is what I have to say about the piracy issue. ISO’s by themselves are
not that bad. I myself hate when I get a crapy game and feel as though it was wasted
$$$. So I can see why some would use an ISO as a “demoâ₠¬Â, but I can also see how
easily it would be to extend the demo into a free full version. Therefore if Sony were
to create demos to prevent sales of “colorful cases†and increase sales of “future
classics†, than future games would be persuaded into making better games and piracy
would go down. Also just as bad is Sony’s high price of UMDs to counter “loses?â€Â.
What should happen is: UMD prices lower to a reasonable price, 99% would then buy
increasing sales and game titles available and decreasing piracy, then Sony wouldn’t
have a problem with homebrew, ending in everyone getting what they want. So much for
what makes since and that functional world some of us dream of.
4th: To those who don't seem to be getting why so many people are happy about the
downgrader and try to find some ****ty reason to “dis† 1.5, this next part is for you.
First, if you really don't see why it’s that big of a deal than you weren't one of
the unlucky ones that either got
a) ripped off into buying a 1.51+ PSP.
b) was forced into upgrading to 2.0 by: UMD, a serviced PSP when trying to “take
advantage†of the warranty, or even by some other horrible method.
c) tricked/persuaded into upgrading when 2.0 first came out not knowing the following
consequences.
Second If you knew even the littlest of programming or even decided to do
some useful/educated/accidental reading, you might just be amazed at the possibilities
that the PSP lay in store for the rest of us 1.5 users.
Third If you truly took a hard look at the useful features between 1.5 and 2.0
you would see that the only currently big/important difference is the
homebrew(1.5) and browser(2.0). Every other useful feature has been
duplicated in each(1.5 and 2.0) version fairly close. Examples include:
-Background changing: 1.5(homebrew) 2.0(system)
-UMB playability: 1.5(all with correct homebrew app.) 2.0(all so far)
-Media formats: Big deal! There are free applications to convert practically every media
format into a PSP compatible format.
-Added network security: Unless you naively decide to pass CC#s and Bank accounts
through your PSP browser, this is not that big of a deal. Plus you still have WPA in 1.5
incase you are really paranoid about someone "viewing" what you decide to do on the
Internet with your PSP. I worry if that's the case.
||The few other minute differences are not mentioned for the fact that they are rarely
used and therefore should not be involved in the process of deciding 1.5 vs 2.0
Fourth If you are still stuck between the 1.5 and 2.0, allow this to tip the
scales towards the best version.
-1.5 will soon have a “goodâ₠¬Â browser, same or better than 2.0
-1.5 will soon have shells that will increase the look and functionality well beyond
Sony’s vision of the PSP’s “look and feelâ€Â.
-1.5 will ‘make bank’ in the “legalâ⠂¬Â homebrew arena thanks to the new/refreshed
interest thanks to the 2.0 downgrader.
-With new knowledge of how to control/use the wifi, browsers made available
for 1.5 and 2.0, and the increase in homebrew makers; features such as
streaming music (internet radio: launch, etc…), possibly video as well,
flash, and many more may soon become common functions of the PSP.
Therefore out of everything, you are left with only two competing functions
(browser vs homebrew) and the future possibilities hinted at in 4-4:
Note: All current 1.5 browsers ‘suck!â⠂¬â„¢ unless you decide to learn Japanese,
and recent 2.0 “homebrew †is inadequate as well.
Conclusion: 1.5 with its 99% of “mimicked †2.0 features, the possibility of
upcoming shells and more/better programs (explained in 4-4), and the irreplaceable
homebrew that gives way to all these accomplishments ; wins hands down.
-Addition: For those still pressed on 2.0, rest assure that soon your opinion won’t
matter to anyone for the follow reason:
Very soon 1 or more of these 3 will surface
a) The 1.5 with a fully functional (English) Internet Browser using an EBOOT.
b) The 2.0 with a full function EBOOT hack. (If remains where it currently is with
limited functionality than it’s just not worth it)
c) A hybrid between the two using a partial upgrade supplying all of the ‘lovedâ⠂¬â„¢ 2.0
features but with the homebrew & shell compatibility of 1.5.
Final 3 notes:
1: I don’t care to hear anyone complain about my program choices or the order in
which they came. I merely put the first ones that came to mind.
2: Being 12, I don’t care to hear anyone complain about my spelling/grammar for if you
do find something than congratulation on graduation high school.
3: I started this comment this morning but by actually having a life and not being able to
complete this until I got home from work I was unable to post this until now so do not
waste a post on how this is a repeat on what was already said.

the uk version works perfectly. use the downgrader and do exactly as stated in the instructions enclosed with the downgrader. If you want to run burnout or other games that need newer firmware just run the wab_version_cha nger_v2.rar

I have 2.0 and havent been able to get the friggin 1st exploit to work.... I have the black background as wallpaper with dots in bottom corner, I put Tif file in photo folder alone... I goto photo and see [?} as thumbnail and thats it... no nothing... WHY???

okay guys, before i had said that i didn't want one guy screwing up the bunch by getting the anonymous posting removed but now that it has become so rampant i change my mind. I personally ask that PSPUpdates.qj.net remove the ability to do anonymous posting as it has gotten way out of hand now. all of the cussing, the post floods, the insults to each other, it is really unprofessional and childish. btw, good news about that downgrader, you developers are the lifesource of this scene. keep up the good work!

Wouldn't it suck if Sony seized on the opportunity, now that lots of people are trying out 2.0 for the first time, or dabbing in 1.5 and then going back to 2.0, to quietly release an altered update that would patch up the security hole. Here we are, thinking that we can switch back by doing the network update and then, whoops, can't pull off the downgrade anymore. Is there a way of upgrading safely? In other words, can we download the 2.0 upgrade file and keep it on our desktop whenever we want to upgrade back to 2.0 safely?

Ok, here's the deal, it should work fine for both versions of v2.00, (if u remember, $ony delayed the US launch and silently changed the 2.0 firmware on their website in Japan). However, if ur having problems, say which 2.0 it is (this probably doesn't matter, but to be safe) and read the new sticky in the forums written by Garp about how to downgrade. MAKE sure to wait at least 30 sec on the black screen. Btw I tested both versions, so they should both work. If u don't want to downgrade wait a week and 2.0 will be cracked, or 2.1 will be out, for those of u who dont want homebrew/ isos

Ok, I'm a little nervous about downgrading and I have a few questions that I'd like to speak out.(nonte: i have and aussie psp fw v.2.00)
1)Because my psp is aussie, there was no 1.5 upgrade release, is it safe to use the u.s one?
2) If I downgrade and use wab version changer to 2.00 (trick it), can I then normally upgrade back to 2.00?
3) Is there a web browser available for 1.5?
4) Although I'm not a real fan of piracy, I have some psp games I downloaded that I wouldn't mind seeing if they work. They are eur versions. How do I use kxploit or fastloader to make them work?
Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I downgraded from Jap 2.0 to 1.5. It worked. I then upgraded to US 2.0, downgraded to 1.5, installed 1.51, then 2.0. Then downgraded to 1.5 and it turned my PSP into a Eur. I then upgraded to JAP 2.0 and it turned my PSP into a US version. What the hell is going on here?

Well I kinda got to work.... keeps giving me a battery too low maessage, but it got 2 bars and Im plugged in... well i got this far... i think it is just so awesome that this exploit for apps 64k and smaller turned out to be 1,000,000 x 2.0 HUGE, all we need now is a Dual Boot option ao just to have SONY give the **** up and make a hacker friendly version :)
