Warning: PSP Bricker Being Spread (Once Again)! |
Listed in: Firmware, Homebrew Development, News Tags: downgrader, Exploit, Jas0nuk, Mathieulh, psp firmware
Ó
The PSP "scene" never sleeps, whether
it is in anticipation of a new downgrader or an exploit, we are always awake
and ready for the next "thing". However, one thing we are not ready
for are PSP brickers. These are programs that are disguised as a simple
homebrew application, but in reality it deletes necessary files for your PSP's
survival. This is something that we do not take lightly in the scene as many have fallen victim to these disguised homebrew games, even one of our members and the first to report the bricker - CatfishD. Now, any of those referring to the victims of this "crime against humanity" as noobs, I wouldn't be so fast to type that. The only way test for a bricker is to use a program that will identify it if it writes to flash. With all the homebrew being released and tested everyday, this has not become a daily practice.
You can download the PSP "virus" scanner below with the download link if you want to be more cautious with your homebrew. The program was created by Dark Killer about a year ago for earlier brickers, but the methods of bricking have stayed the same - so it still works!
You can test for these "brickers" by using a simple program, or you could wait for someone to report it in our forums as was the case yesterday. Mathieulh and Jas0nuk also took the time to inform everyone how this particular bricker works (you can read all about it here).
What to look for -
- The most recent bricker has been concealed with the folder names (KXploited form) of SDL-TEST-5 and SDL-TEST-5%
- The file size is around 75kb, the % folder containing a 65kb eboot
- Use Dark Killer's PSafeP program, of which can be discussed and downloaded below (newly upload from old download site!)
- Do not use any programs that you have not seen come from a reliable source. Best source is of course, PSPUpdates!

It's just like those ppl who write PC virus... mostly for fun even some of them are extremely destructive. I love my 3 years of programming work back in 97 due to a Stone Monkey Empire and I had been a fanatic in virus scan and data back up since then...

And before I get accused of being a fanboy. I have both a DS and a PSP. DS With a flashcard, and PSP with 1.5 firmware. So both have completely free games for me. And I love them both. PSP Revolution

Geez, go to Digg, go to most other sites... full of Nintendo fanboys bashing all things Sony. Give it a rest. You think Nintendo owners are patron saints of the planet or something?

It doesnt happen often, but for once I think I may be right this time!
This is known as "bullying", and what bullies want is a response. We are giving him a response. That's what satisfies him.
Insane people like this need to be ignored... So please, if you can resist, just read the news and DON'T COMMENT =)

god i hate those people who think its funny to brick PSPs. Im kind of new to the homebrewing scene and i had a few questions. Is it possible to run freedoom on the doompsp port? and i know a wolfenstein 3D port had been made. How can i play the full version of the game on it? if i buy the game will it come with the wad. file needed? does it even run on wad. files? and the same for duke nukem? and is there anyway to emulate a 2.8 using devhook? and what firmware version does "Gangs of London" require? im so sorry this is wayyyyy off topic but i needed to know. Thanks so much for your help!,

Hello, recently a new PSP Virus has been created by a person who goes by the online aliases Zapi and Zarp2000. Upon investigation I have discovered that this user has registered on your forums, which is why I emailed you. I am requesting that you send me this user's IP Address in order to report him to the proper authorities for his malicious activity.
I hope to have cooperation from you on this matter, as it would greatly help the PSP Scene put an end to this development before it expands.

Hopefully we will have a reply..

I also only download from psp updates and noobz.eu(the new Fanjitas place)
Maybe I should be glad I got banned from their irc channel.

No offense dude, but you're not too bright if you actually think that the e-mail you sent will get you his IP address.
You're just some random person with a story that can't be verified asking for personal information from someone that knows nothing about you.
You say if they're sensible they'll respond with his info, when in reality, if they're sensible they'll ignore your e-mail. People won't just go around giving out IP addresses to every stranger that asks.
Not to mention that there's no proof that the person with that user name on that site, is the same person with that user name elsewhere. The same username has been known to be used by more than one person.
Sorry to burst your bubble.

The PSP was not designed for homebrew. It may run it, but that isn't what it was built for. If you want to play SNES and LUA on it, then you have to take the bad with the good.
If you do the updates like you should and run software designed for it, you will have a worthwhile entertainment device. If not, then have fun when a homebrewer plays games with YOUR handheld.
