**UPDATE** PSP firmware 3.51 comes to UK; U.S. hold tight, you're certainly next |

Ó
It was just a couple of hours ago when we learned that Sony has unleashed a new official PlayStation Portable firmware over at its PlayStation site for Japan. Dubbed as firmware 3.51, this development is still somewhat shrouded in mystery as the only known change implemented to it is the fix for a certain security vulnerability. This time, the very same firmware appeared on PlayStation UK and Sony is still keeping mum if there are other changes made to it. The very short changelog reads,
- Security:
- A patch has been added to address security vulnerability in the system software.
We check the official PlayStation for North America and the said update is still nowhere to be found. Despite that, however, we believe that it's just a matter of hours or even 0moments before Sony brings it to the said market.
Updates as we get them.
UPDATE: As we said earlier, hold tight U.S. because you are certainly next. True enough, official PSP firmware 3.51 just appeared on the PlayStation site for North America. It seems that the new firmware is indeed all about the security patch as reflected by its changelog:
The PSP system software version 3.51 update (with v 3.50) includes the following:
- Network
- You can now connect a PSP system to a PS3 system via the Internet using [Remote Play].
- [Communication Settings] has been added as an option to the [Remote Play] menu.
- [RSS Channel Guide] has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
- Other
- New for 3.51: A security patch was added to address security vulnerabilities in the system software.

that you can give the firmware a rating so of course I was the first to give it a poor rating. I think everyone should do the same ;}

i was wondering at that time, if sony had caught wind of the Lumines exploit and had patched 3.50...
of course, now I realize they are silly, and wouldn't patch anything without adding a .1 to it... :)
they should have fixed their flawed 3.50 immediately, instead of changing the number!! because now everyone knows NOT TO TOUCH 3.51!

which brings to mind, what will sony do about all those 3.50 preloaded models now? recall them again..?!

Given Sony's track record with protecting their new firmware(s) from the old decryptors, chances are they'll still work with 3.51.
Also, this is the second UMD an exploit has been found in, the first one being Liberty City Stories, of course. Then think about all the games Sony and / or other companies have released.
It's absolutely impossible for there to not be another exploit in at least one of them. It's just a matter of figuring out which one it is.

'A security patch was added to address security vulnerabilities in the system software.'
They may as well just say that the PSP has been hacked into, LOL they are just getting so annoyed about the legends, N00bz, Fanjita & Dark Alex!

nobody will upgrade to this 3.51 firmware.
the hacking community is not even giving this a notice, hacking this firmware is a total waste of time.
no psp user with a proper state of mind will update his/her psp to FW 3.51, there is no such benefit in doing so, and a chance of bricking has a probability and not worth the update.
instead of making senseless security updates like this, i suggest you and your team work on better tools to be included on the actual firmware like more media support/youtube on browser etc, because incorporating the needs of the public unto the official firmware will decrease the motivation/reason to hack it further.

Sony fails really hard at the moment, and it's their own fault! Removing the retro-compatibility hardware from the PS3 in Europe was for example one TERRIBLY bad move. What do european consumers think about this? Unless they're dumb, they feel like Sony's sticking something deep within their a$$, and not in a gentle manner. If you see what I mean.
As for piracy on the PSP, well there was a lot of piracy on PSX and PS2 too, but they both sold millions of games anyway. One of the reasons for this is that they had a lot of great and original games. The PSP does NOT have a lot of great games, most games suck or they are remakes...
If you ask me what I play the most on my PSP, I'll tell you that I play old PSX games (that I still own, and rip myself, heh) through the PSX emulator. And I thank Dark Alex for that!

But now i'm just so annoyed by all this Firmware update cr*p, and i'm not gonna get a PS3, cuz they are doing the same thing with that...
I haven't bought a PSP game in something like a year. I just download them from Warez, i'm so annoyed with Sony now, i don't even care if they go bankrupt because of Warez!

About 90% of people update their firmware to the official sony firmwares, for many valid reasons.
Sony make new updates because they are obliged to, as piracy is illegal and causes them to lose money.

While I was messing around with my PSP, I got something under the game section that says, "PSP Update ver 2.81"
The only problem happens when I click it. I get this message, "The system software of your PSP system is version 3.51. There is no need to update."
Now, I am a noob at this PSP stuff, that's why I am at Firmware Version 3.51. But if this information could be important to the discovery of a new exploit to downgrade, then ask me for some information and I'll tell you exactly what I did.
If people have got this on their PSP before then just let me know so I can stop feeling like im getting somewhere with it.
Thanks a lot!
