Far be it for us at QJ to put up any fake news, but when sifting through the daily sand dune of emails, a nice gem gleamed in the rough. We have received these (very convincing in my opinion) images of the upcoming PSone emulator for the PSP, created by none other than Sony themselves (as Ken detailed himself). The emulator will allow users to download games onto their PSP's memory stick and run them via the "Game" menu on the PSP (which sounds just like what we do already.)
For example, (according to the images,) Gran Turismo 2 will support both ad-hoc (2 players) and infrastructure modes (2-6 players.) The cost on the (I will again iterate convincing) image will be at $15, which although pricey, is much cheaper than current PSP UMD games, and brings us the youthful joy at a reasonable price. But you don't have to take my word for it, I'll let you read the news tip as well and decide for yourself, because we can never be too sure:
"My friend who is a designer at sony gave me these pics, he said that this is what the psone emulator for psp will look like. he said that the games will be downloaded by a program shown in the screenshots and will be played under "game". I think this is true because he showed them to me from his camera which doesn't show ANY edited images."

Edit: Ok, $15 is expensive, but it's better to pay $15 for a game with probably no loading times and better playability than most of today's UMDs. (Although $5 would definitely be much more reasonable, and to their benefit in sales of antiquated games.)

Has anyone thought about the button layout on this thing? and whether or not it will support the analog nub? I suppose you could have the button layout as is and just make the L2 and R2 buttons the left and right analog nub direction respectfully. But only time will tell, I think that if these images are true and so close to E3 that Song will release this in a new update during the week of E3 or a week after.

Like the other person commented. It's fake simply because of the bad design. Vertical type? Where in the PSP OS is vertical type used? And what is that, Helvetica bold?

What a random assortment of popular games, I'm confused why they're are so few, and not many are actually by sony. The first few games should be expected to be game developed by Sony.

My two cents here.
We know we will figure out on the 3.0 how to run homebrew because if they are using the menu we should be able to be able to decompile and figure out how they are running the software from the game menu. and i am sure there will be an easy way of sharing the games people download... so this can be a good thing after all lol.
Sony would definatly have to consider ERSB rating and making deals with each gaming company allowing them to convert the ps1 images into psp eboots. I doubt sony can make a goood enough emulator to play ps1 games, they would need to redo the entire control schemes. Also, It would cause tons of pirating. If someone was able to run the images through a firmware loader, then that would be pirate heaven. I don't think sony is ready to release anything like this.

You just have to edit a XMB screenshot and show the results on the PSP display.

Honestly, im not one to go "OMG Photoshop", but if you look at the bottom 2 pictures, what are the chances that those wavy lines (in the background) are in the EXACT same spots.... I take these pics as a grain of salt because of this or else i would have probably believed this. Better luck next time... =P

Maby the games will be sold at different prices and GT is more expensive than some for some reason. And this is probably fake ill believe it when i see it from sony.

games we already own? Can we not make images of these to use? If they are worried about Piracy, what about downloading some sort of software that checks the authenticity of the PSOne CD, and digitally sign the ISO that is created to only work in the designated (ie. your) PSP? I don't want to spend money on a game I already own.
I wouldnt mind paying 15 bucks! Although i just got my psp and accidentally updated to 2.6, finally figured out the emulators. Hmmmmm, SNES, or PS1. Tough choice.

a few games might be worth 15 bucks but i own most of the good ps1 games id want to buy. Like resident evil and MGS. I dont think sony would sell ps1 games for $15 bucks they already screwed up by over pricing UMD movies they dont want to do it again.

Ok, so they are fakes, but as for you people complaining about having to pay for the PS1 game downloads, you're kinda giving off that ungrateful bastard vibe, I mean Sony doesn't even have to do a PS1 emulator But they are, they are working on it, and in case you didn't notice, The PSP is missing a few buttons, so Sony are aiming to re-do some code on games to make it compatable with the PSP BUT also are working on a way to compress the files so they take up less space than the PS1 versions!, So it's quite common they will want some money for this.

I truly hope that Sony will allow us to store these games separately from our PSP. It's fantastic that we will be able to download them, and the $15 price isn't bad at all in my opinion... sure they're older games, but they're now portable and try finding some of the old PS1 games in good condition for under $20. I just hope it's not a "Play once then discard" Scenerio... hopefully if that's the case they will allow us to redownload the games to our specific PSP's
One other quandry: what about the other two shoulder buttons on the PS1 controller? I guess it'll be a little more than a direct port... maybe sone rewriting of the control code?

Me and my Brother both own a PSP if a download a PS1 game i should at least be able to put it on his PSP also. We wont want to buy the same PS1 game 3 times.

If this was real, do you have any idea how long it would take to download a full sized PSOne game over wireless B? My understanding was that it was going to be integrated through a PC application and then transferred to the PSP via USB like all other media. It also seems like the PS3 would be a great platform for that, since the PSP is going to interface with the PS3.

Well, to be honest I do not know whether or not this news is fake. QJ.NET has posted some fake news before so it would not surprise me. But then, so do other news sites.
The fact remains that SONY's PS One emulator will be available in the near future, but I can not help but wonder howSONY intends to try to stop people from pirating these games.
Nobody has mentioned that the list of games is mostly in alphabetical order, then at the end they go from Twisted Metal 2 to Quake 2.

I'm curious as to how the PS1 games will looko on the PSP, PSP games are made to support the full 16:9 aspect ratio of the PSP screen, While PS1 games were in the 4:3 format which is regular TV, Surely they would have the option to stretch the image to fit the entire screen.

OK morons, here's two things:
1. The screenshots are fake - notice how they're alphabetical order, then fly off to Quake 2?
2. There isn't going to be a *****ing PS1 emulator for the PSP. They never announced that. What they DID announce is that you can play PS1 games on the PSP, meaning they will PORT the games to PSP. There aint no *****ing emulator.

IF Sony has made a REAL PS1 emulator, which I doubt because of firmware size limitations, we can break it. It's just another part of the OS. In fact, if this is true, then Sony practically is begging hackers to open it up. Since the GTA exploit, nothing is safe. About the pics, it's honestly not that hard to get a second screen shot from the PSP with the clock at a later time and the lines in a different place. One more thing, why wouldn't the "faker" just use a custom background, so no lines would show?

Well, I just posted this on the official UK forums and it got locked (and the images deleted) pretty quickly by the moderators. They said "Sorry people, until images/videos of any new PSP updates are released officially through either the PlayStation or PSP website, they cannot be posted on the Forums."
That sounds like it's the real stuff to me but they don't want it released to the public yet.

Who cares if the images are fake? People are looking too close at the pics. I mean analyzing the type of font used good god a little over thinking this arn't you guys? It has already be stated by sony themselves that the new firmware will support ps1 emulation so just wait untill it comes out to see what the interface looks like. Chances are if these even it these are real the look of them will change before it is released.
As for the $15 price tag that could change. If not I am sure someone will find a way to run the game isos from the emulator instead of buying them.

Sony gave us the PSP, without the PSP you and everyone on this site will not be here talking about psp's or even thinking about it. So accept it. Sony needs money to create games, ps3's and what not. It's there for your entertainment.

everyone thinks that the release of the emulator will bring back homebrew. WRONG! when you try and load homebrew on 2.01+ it says its corrupt. but the emulator will be written in "sony's code" and thus it will not be corrupt and run on 1.51, 1.52, 2.01+ etc
The list isnt in alphabetical order either. It's attempted, but someone doesnt know that : L comes before : T . Too bad it's just another fake. I wonder if qj is following in the footsteps of psp3d lol.
Actually, They will probably implement a whole new coding system. This is going to be a way to stop homebrew obviously. They want you to upgrade.
Also, the only thing I find wrong with those images is they don't show the game size. Why wouldn't they tell you that kind of information?

People will simply learn to download them from each other off the internet, in time. I forsee the day when all PSOne Emulator games are free, unless Sony finds a way to code them to be visually unavailable when you connect your PSP to your computer.

If any of you actully take the time to think back to the original news about the PSone Emulator to be posted, you will remember the part that said something alon the lines of "Which will be able to play modified versions of PSone Titles".
The "modified" part more than likely refers to things like remapping the button layouts and the like to over-come the lack of the additional shoulder buttons. It wouldnt suprise me if soundtracks are scaled down in order to save space too.
Although I would like to see some of them games, especially Gran Turismo with the strange absence of GT Mobile, I also agree that the price is a bit steep. I mean you can get the games for about £5 in the bargain bin at you local games/music stores so why would we want to pay more than that, especially seeing as their old games anyways.
They arn't in alphabetical order - Duke Nukem Time To Kill would come after Duke Nukem Land Of The babes. Therefore they're fake.

Well now I say that this if fake for a number of reasons:
1. PSone emulator is coming WAAY after Flash support
2. "Downloads" on left side is in too plain of a font
3. If you have noticed, not ONCE in the PSP firmware does it use the word Wi-Fi, like how it was used in the pics. PSP always says "WLAN" instead of "Wi-Fi". Try connecting to the internet without the switch on and it gives you a WLAN error.
Well, why doesn't someone EXIF these to see if they are real?
firstly, they have to allow us to store these ps1 games on a pc or ps3.
secondly, everybody who heard that gdc statement assumed it meant a ps1 emulator... so i think it's a safe bet.
thirdly, $15 isn't that bad, but i reckon they'll have a graded pricing system, gran turismo, mgs, ff7 etc will probs be premium titles, but others may have a lower price point.

Don't know if this is fake or not, but Sony IS working on a way to get the PSOne games working on the PSP. Take anything with a grain of salt until you see something official from Sony themeselves. There could be a price for the games, or they could be free. People just need to wait and see.

It's things like half the comments listed on this page that make me feel like Slashdot is the only place I should trust for my gaming news. Out of 183 comments (this would be about 184) only, perhaps, a dozen have any real value. The rest are repeats (Yes, I know about the wavy-line error. I read that 60 comments above yours...), people complaining about the price (Wow, $15. Might as well ask for my first born while they're at it), people calling those people Anti-Sony because they don't want to pay $15 (Sony made these games, so they can price it at whatever you want, and you'll damn well like it!), people calling each other n00bs (Oh, aren't you special! You figured out how to evade the swear filter!), "FAKE!!" posts (Well, I wasn't convinced it was fake reading the first 63 times you C/Ped it in your message, but the 64th convinced me).
So, here's what I think should be done: everyone should just shut up. The image is proven fake, so we should stop arguing over the firmware version, pricing, storage on the memory stick, control translation, how you could fake something like this (and how you could do it better, too), and how YOU discovered it was fake (even though someone else already did that a few hours ago).

it has to be fake, most of the ps1 games were about 700mb and the most storage for a psp is 4 gig. so 4000/700=5.something. so you would only see about 6 games on that emulator, not 13.

I live in Australia so this will give me a chance to buy and play quality games like xenogears and chrono cross, and I have very fond memories of Legend of Dragoon, despite never finishing it.
I think since so many people are worried about the size of ps1 isos they should consider the screen resolution of the psp, with gameplay videos compressed to that ratio they can be much smaller
and also no one ever seems to take into account that the majority of developers did not use all of the 700MB available to them, for example each disc of ff7 is about 500MB

I doubt it. Though it might be wise to combat homebrew emu with official emu, the fact still remains that if people can get it cheaper, faster, and more functional, they will. If Sony actually put out a PS1 emulator, I'm willing to bet it would come with incredibly restrictive DRM, meaning the minute you tried to share with friends or store a backup, the game would be rendered unplayable. Another thorny issue would have to do with the difference in controls, considering the PSP has two fewer shoulder buttons, and one fewer analog sticks, not to mention the complete absence of the R3 and L3 buttons. Although it isn't inconcievable that game code could be rewritten for the new control architecture.
I figure that even if Sony did bring out an update that featured an emulator, the reasoning would merely be to entice homebr(users) to upgrade their system firmware, thus locking out the unofficial software. The functionality would be limited at best, and the support would quickly dry up as the hardware would (inevitably) be supercede3d by the PSP2.
and at E3 sony shows off infact the psone emulation is real and working, one more thing for the scene to crack, although i would pay the $15 for certain games (SoTN,FFVII)

The truth to this is hard to decide.
- This will open a whole new backdoor. If the emulation is ACTUALLY emulation, L2 and R2 will be emulated, not recoded. And memory will be protected. Otherwize, a homebew PSx rom can rip a new hole.
- Compressed or not, a standard CD holds 600MB, Half of the PSP-Wielding people don't have 1GB sticks. With compression, loading times will be WORSE than PSx. Were talking constant library loading, unencrypt, library unload. 3 games will probably take 1.5 GB.
- The PSP can't handle emulation as well as you think. While it tries, it cannot fully emulate a SNES rom wtihout lag, even at 333Mhz, 33 Mhz over a PS2. I have even had lag on a NES game.
- As mentioned, Nintendo is the only company with a large amount of games creaded BY nintendo, as where sony and microsoft rely on 3rd party developers. Chances are they'll want money from sony to allow them to redistribute. Plus, that's a lot of contracts for 15$ a game, it's practically a remake.

quit arguing and conspiring if sony come out with an ps1 emulator for psp itll be integrated into thier code witch will be completely redone on 3.0 as for 15 dollars a game i can understand but i have already got all my favorite ps1 games and aint planning on buying em again ill just stick to 1.5 and if 3.0 does have an ps1 emulator i might consider buying it but then again i got a ps1 soo i change my mind ill just stick with the 12 game consoles i already have on my psp besides if they do come out with an ps1 emulator ill be doing nothing but playing ff7-8-9 and tactics all day every day oh and metal gear but that would be a coool game to have on psp but im not gonna look 2 hard into this besides i got over 500 games i grew up playing on my psp soo im already happy

honestly there are few psx games id be willing to shill out 15 bucks for when i could go to the nearest gamestop/eb games and get 4 to 5 games for the same amount
