PSP - Image 1As we have reported in a previous post, the PSP reverts to its old 222 MHz cap as soon as Wi-Fi is enabled, despite the recent firmware upgrade that unlocks the full clock speed of the PlayStation Portable.

GameDaily BIZ contacted Sony as soon as they have received word about the Wi-Fi clock speed cap. David Karraker, Sony's Senior Director of Corporate Communications, confirmed the news that the 222 MHz speed cap is in effect when Wi-Fi - mostly used for network play - is turned on.

"The article is correct that increased CPU speed cannot be used with the PSP's wireless feature," said Karraker, referring to Beyond3D's report. "SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) is working closely with the development community to take full advantage of this new functionality where appropriate for their titles."

An SCEA spokesperson also added that they will "check in with" SCEJ (Japan) regarding the Wi-Fi MHz limit.

Stay tuned here at QJ for more updates regarding this.

Lolya.

It does indeed SUCK the battery up to have both running at the same time... Imagine if they let you charge as well. :P

charge...

hrm why can't we charge when the wlan switch is up? what's the reasoning there?

ratchet

Aha now i understand why ratchet and clank freezes when go to infrastructure, little bit strange i guess, ratched and clank need higher then 222mhz to run, cause else it wont start, and then when your higher then 222 and the game starts, your gonna do infrastructure and de wife caps the speed back to 222mhz again and ratchet freezes.

some thoughts

If it only needs 266 to start, could you turn it back to 222 after the game starts with another plugin, making wifi work fine?

The real issue

The limit is not in place to help conserve battery life. The psp power supply does not give enough amps to run the wifi and processor @ 333 at the same time. Bino Panda hit it on the nose when he said you should be able to do it with it plugged in. If this was the case, they could unlock this feature only when the unit is plugged in just like the brightest screen setting works. it sounds like it is a hardware limit (power supply) but they can fix that for the psp-slim

Yawn

Just use irsmp3 to raise the cpu before connecting to wifi, full clock speed and u can charge...

ohh.

The limit is not in place to help conserve battery life. The psp power supply does not give enough amps to run the wifi and processor @ 333 at the same time. oh that makes sense, wonder what if psp 2000 will improve in that way hrm...

yeah but...

if new games like god of war are using 333 MHZ, then how will the wifi gameplay work? the processor wont be fast enough at 222 MHZ.
