Ó

A few days ago, Sony moved both the PSP 1000 and PSP 2000's (aka PSP Slilm) firmware up to version 3.70. The update included a new feature that allows users to tinker with their handheld's themes (without having to resort to homebrew apps, that is). The company's following up this major news by letting PSP owners in the UK know that 10 themes are now available for download to their system.

The list consists mostly of themes based on games you guys may have played - the Cookie theme's reportedly been pre-installed in some PSPs :
  • Wipeout theme for the PlayStation Portable - Image 1Cookies
  • Classy Pink
  • Lemmings
  • WipEout
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 1
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 2
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 3
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 4
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 5
  • Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice - 6
For the guys interested in customizing their themes with this batch, the download links are available over at Sony UK's official site via the read link. Don't worry - we've tested the links, and these themes appear to be free. Also keep on the lookout for any new themes that are expected to come out in the near future.

We thank Sev1512 for tipping us off regarding this news bit.

Sony is so jealous of custom firmware. The original idea of a "theme" to Sony was changing a damn background. Icons are nice, what about gameboot, sounds, intros?

chaging the sound maybe but boot and intro.. hmm maybe to much and they will not allow to change the sony computer for a stupid manga boot or something

you know.. Sony didn't move a muscle so far to make the PSP homebrew friendly, but they steal ideas from the homebrew community.. like RSS before and now Themes..

on the other hand they ban homebrew like mad..

this is pretty rude from them I think..

I don't know what kind of relationship this is..

It was meant to be more of a rhetorical question. Basically stating that they're now implementing things that we've had now for a while that could have been here already.

sony actually made a good move. sadly, it's only to promote the new hardware.

while most would consider this something sony did right, it';s sad that it isn't to please their customers, it's mostly to attract new buyers.

It looks good so far, just hopefully they'll let you create your own themes eventually. Doubt it, but you never know. Also, I can't wait for the 3.70 M33, I'm going to leave DAX for this one, I've been sticking with 3.40 OE-A for a while, but this looks like it might be worth the upgrade, the main reason I stuck with OE is because it supported my Ctrl+Alt+Del theme, if I can recreate it with some hacker/sony made tool, that'd be awesome.

What do this them system allows to change? So far I have seen that the icons and background change, but is this the only thing that changes? no sounds, gameboot, coldboot, etc... ??

i just cant believe that almost 2 years later sony had that idea (stolen from us) of adding theme support.....the only probleme is that mine has custom wallpapers, sounds, icons, gameboots and even HOMEBREWS !!!! sorry to nintendo and sony but GPSP and SNESTYL are just the best things ever to be on a portable unit......

# Actually Sony has wanted to implement alot of stuff from CFWYAMI ANUBIS X 2007-09-12 17:58
I remember John Koller or someone said that they thought of custom firmware as an awesome addition and they love the homebrew scene and everything about it because of all of the incredible stuff and wanted to implement it into future OFW's but what they didnt like was playing ISO's and such.
