Sony PlayStation Portable owners looking to get more out of their PSPs, rejoice! The highly-anticipated official firmware from Sony, PSP Firmware 3.90, is now out, and with it comes the feature to use Skype. Yes, that Skype, the one that lets you talk over the internet free. Awesome!
So, just what sort of services from Skype are we talking about? Communication over the internet, as well as on mobile phones, baby! Of course, while talking to your Skype buddies is completely free, other types of calls need some moolah to happen. Below is a list of services that you can use upon installing PSP Firmware 3.90 on your Slim & Lite:
- Outgoing calls between Skype ID (Skype ID) (free)
- General and the outgoing phone calls (dialer, SkypeOut ™) (paid)
- General mobile phones in the phone (Phone receiving, SkypeIn ™) (paid)
- Voice mail exchanges (some paid)
- PSP ® console (PSP-2000 series)
- Memory Stick Duo ™ (capacity needs at least 1MB)
- Wireless Internet access environment
- PSP ® Skype to respond to the voice input and output devices
- Earphones attached remote control (PSP S140 G-G-270) + headset (PSP).
- 1 headset connected to the remote system to connect to the PSP.

first, a comment...
Skype is all that and a bag of chips... but for those that don't use skype, even on PC (like moi)... it doesn't really matter.
so now the question... since i don't read Korean and the firmware isn't available from the US playstation site, yet... so, when it does become available, what else will be in the firmware? will there be two distinct firmwares (phat vs slim)?
i didnt see it in the sony website, i wanna try it out in my phat, i got a pandora hopefully it works on 3.90, and if not, i still got my slim =P
(i know skype dont work on phats but i wanna see the other features)
It's available to the US via official Network Update, the Playstation site just hasn't been updated yet.
The update works on both Fat and Slim, they aren't separate.
Slims get both Skype and more PSN title support, meaning all that's added to the Fat is the PSN support. Those things are all that are added.
They released this just 2 weeks after 3.80M33 was released. They are definitely getting smarter. They are trying to keep people off custom firmwares by giving new features in original firmware.
when will this be decrypted and ported to original(screw dumb phat nick-name) it'll probably have to use some memory stick space to compensate for lack of 'ram' i still don't believe that argument though becuause how can skype take more ram than a game, it doesnt make since to me /endrant
We can, but there's still KL4E/KL3E compression on several modules.

the problem was flash space, its no secrete that the phat psp has been running out of space with all the new features, that is why they added much more flash space to the slims, although it seems that sony has not yet used the little space they have in flash2 and flash3

if sony really likes their customers they cud hav some option to redirect the flash0 files required to run skype and other features that mite come in the future to our memory stick for the phat psp
I updated t the new fw from D_A's custom firmware. wasnot aware that this was possible as my pandora stick gave out for some reason, then my phat psp couldn't run homebrew so I guess I'm done to. Skype on the go. Finally.

It's most DEFINITELY using way too much RAM to run on a fat PSP, regardless of where the Skype files are.
It unloads your custom background and custom theme just to load this.
All the sound effects are exactly like the PC ones.
The audio quality is decent; I had a friend in Ireland call me via his Skype cell and I could make him out quite clearly.
There is NO TEXT MESSAGING.

Im assuming people with the original PSP doesn't get skype, but we get PSN support. And what games will be supported with this FW update. I haven't updated my PSP since the 3.73 or something update.

Not only does the Skype app take up more than the available RAM on the NORMAL (not that retarded ph word) PSP, but the program won't fit in what's left of the normal PSP's internal flash

version 3.80 doesn't really add any useful features. The radio player sucks, but skype on the psp slim would really be a feature worth creating a custom firmware for.

I have noticed that this update contains Go! Messenger (wich I still need to try out). How many people were aware this was also coming in this update?

This could be possible on the PHAT PSPs running on custom fimrware if people decide to move on from 1.50 Kernal Access, remove location free player and some language packs and replace them with the skype functionality. Dark_Alex could probably do this, but with people still requiring 1.50 kernal for older homebrews its likley that it won't actually happen.
Either way since it probably won't happen, I'll stick with 3.80M33 until something that actually applies to my PSP comes out.
Screw skype, no support for fat PSPs, costs money anyway.

I am having difficulty updating my psp from firmware 3.52 M33-4 to 3.80 M33
if this gets decrypted u can copy a file from 3.90 called premo_plugin.prx and replace ur current one, it will then let u access remote play again:)
wrong topic, but you have to set the game folder to load 3.52 firmware applications in the recovery menu.

Man, I was trying for about an hour to figure that out....my config was set on 1.5.

You mean like what they've been doing since firmware 2.00? They've been adding new features along with exploit patches with newer firmwares for a long time. Like bumping people over to 2.00 from 1.50 with the internet browser. It's nothing new.
It will always work. Pandora starts before the firmware can do anything.

you freely accepted it the pain when you decided to refuse to switch from classic to slim.
not doing so is like going outside to a porta-potty in subzero weather to go take a #2, instead of using your bathroom toilet. And in this case it comes with a stink fan, auto-flushes and a seat warmer.
They fixed the psp go buy a real one already.

If you cant afford a slim and have a waranty on your ''phat'', drop it on the wlan switch. Then take it to bestbuy and they'll give you a slim one if you lucky. be sure to make a pandora battery and MS first. Tha way you can go to CFW.

Just Remember that once u upgrade, no more cfw. make sure you have pandora in case 3.90m33 comes out. and soon sony will find a way to abolish this in the future. Waste of time for phat owners as updating gives u about nothing except more support and tighter fw security. Stinks cause I own a phat but at least I can run all homebrew. DOesn't matter great things for slim way to go, But if skype is cheaper than a celular is worth it, i mean almost everyplace in this world have a damd WIFi spot enviroment, so is nice to have this feature, the bad is that is not for the PSP-1000, amd I know FURIKUP is by NoobZ, but is more dificlt to use and there's no always a good VOIP Server that really works... So is more like unstable than stable, like this Skype, that's why I like it sorta... but yeah we hope DA or some codder port this REally cool and organized easy to use without hesitate to the PSP-1000(phat0, in anyway, u know like an homebrew, flash add on, CFW UPDATE . regarless the method he use, just do it as u like but do it, I know FURIKUP is great, but is not always have that security that u r calling or recieving a call.... So we keep an eye in to it!

You know, I am about sick and tired of whining Phat users. I have sat here with my slim, on forum after forum, as well as QJ, reading posts from Phat uers telling Slim users "to bad, so sad, we rock, and you can't have everything!" because you had access to 1.50 and ALL homebrew, and we were left out in the cold simply having to use what little homebrew we could find that supported v2 and v3. Well, just as stated, you CAN'T have everything. You sat there for the longest time having the best of both worlds, and when your old, outdated Phat has finally reached the end of its life cycle with its small RAM, you are crying like babies. So you know what? Here is what I have to say to you, "too bad, so sad, we rock, and you can't have everything!"
furikup isn't so user-friendly yet. The voice quality with these free SIP servers is in most cases not that great. Skype works in the XMB and has much better sound quality.
Don't wanna bash furikup though, i like it alot and i think it has potential if someone gives it a nicer GUI and fixes the bugs.
I refuse to buy a PSP slim, mainly because it has features like TV out that the original was supposed to have! Now they make a homebrew resistant version that's worse in several ways like durability and has minimal improvments.
I have 2 fat PSPs and I'd take them over the slim any day, because skype is useless, and 1.5 kernel mode is useful.

If you use the PSP for anything other than music and gaming, you really just need to get a damned laptop.
And if you can't afford to pay, you can't afford to play. Don't whine because there are those of us who actually managed to save a "whopping" $200 for a new PSP (yes, I got the Vader edition) despite having normal living expenses. If you dont make enough to save the same, then you need another job, and need to quit gaming.

but i think ill stick with 380 because 390 doesnt have support for irshell. so until someone manages to crack irshell and make it compatible for future firmwares ill stick on 380.(or if ahman comes back then ill go for the new fw.)

Lol i havent updated my psp since like 3.52 i think. The internet radio everybody freaks out about is lame. I use homebrew pspradio that just recently got updated. Sony keeps updating so much im waiting on one good fw upgrade to stick for a while before i take the time to upgrade mine. Plus waiting on some good features skype is crap. Ill just use furikup. Hope GPS comes to the US soon!
does any body know or heard any news on a psp bluetooth adapter on the psp usb ad on divece.that would make things easy to use skype when making a call instead of using a headset with a long cord hanging all the time you know a bluetooth to use as headset and mic
i installed 3.90 over network update and it crashed my psp
once it finished installing when i turned on my psp, the MOMENT i pressed the X button, i got the "red screen" then i got the "blue screen" and now my psp just wont work properly :(

We don't want copyrighted software like Skype, we need a real SIP phone application, to be able to use real (free or not) VoIP phone on the PSP.
Something like SIPPhone for PC to be able to use VoipBuster etc..

Hey guys, my PSP is running on 3.40 OE-A (haven't updated in quite some time obviously) and I can't update to the latest stuff without at least having 3.57 M33-3, but that's just it, I can't find 3.57 anywhere. Can anyone hook me up with the links I'll need?
I can upgrade my PSP 3.71 M33-5 to 3.90 M33.

First of all its 3.52m33. No thing as 3.57. Go to www.dark-alex.org to find all the m33 software from dark alex himself. Update first to 3.52m33, then 3.52m33-3 (or 4), and go to which ever one after that. U might have to upgrade first to 3.51 m33 but not sure. Reccomend 3.80m33-5 not 3.90 as u can get ir shell and bugs may be present for 3.90m33. Hope this helps.

It's cool when i got a news that we can use skype on PSP with updating to 3.90,but I was turned down when I saw the exact news on Offical website,cuz it can't be used on fat PSP,I was unhappy.But I updated to 3.90m33-2,and then I found that I can't run the CSO games on PSP,I hope somebody can help me,and I really apeciate that.Thanks.

Its probably because you have the original psp. Only the slim Psp`s can have Skype because of greater flash memory. Plus if you never used it before, don`t know anyone with skype, or have no wi-fi, its pretty useless unless you`re willing to pay for services and a headset. I only have original psp and im not really gonna commit suicide or buy psp-2000 for Skype. Just use a PC or notebook. If you do have a slim psp you have a problem on your hands.
I had a similar prob. to this which nothing could really run. In m33 recovery menu (power fully off and hold R on startup) go to configuration. Then go to game folder homebrew and make sure it`s set to 3.90. Then exit to XMB main menu. Once there press select for vsh menu and see that umd iso mode is set to sony np9660. thats all
