PSP and PS3 - Image 1Since the release of Firmware 5.0 for the PSP and 2.5 for the PS3, gamers got the much needed boost in the use of their platforms. Munechika Nishida, a well-connected technology writer,  managed to speak with Naoya Matsui, Koujiro Umemura, Masaki Takase, and Shinji Noda from Sony Computer Entertainment about the upcoming firmware for PSP and PS3.

Sony has actually been working on Flash 9 support for some time now. This has been a heavily requested feature, said Matsui, more particularly for Japan users who wish to watch vids from Nico Nico Video, a Japanese version of YouTube. To do this, Sony customized a separate Flash implementation provided by Adobe.

According to Takase, to run Flash-based playback for H.264 videos requires the use of an SPU. This separates web page loading from video playback, giving users improved frame rate.

The PSP, however, will not be getting Flash 9 support just yet. Noda explained that the PSP is extremely resource limited. Getting the full-screen keyboard to run is already hard enough. Noda also points out that it would be impossible to run the full-screen output of the PSP on TV sets unless you have hardware support.

In the meantime, Sony engineers are working on a future firmware update for the PSP to add video capture support, in addition to the screen capture support that it already has.

Unfortunately, owners of the early 20GB PS3 will have something to rant about. Sony's Ad-Hoc Party initiative will not be supported by the old system. Umemura explains that it would be difficult at present to allow 20GB owners to simply attach a wireless LAN adapter via USB and use the service. Boo.

Why? That's exactly what Sony promised when the 20GB was announced (a usb wifi adapter)

The 20GB PS3 was a crippled bastard stepchild that should have never been sold.

They realized they were becoming like MicroShaft by charging users for "accessories" that should have been part of the bloody console, so they scrapped it.

Could somebody care to explain how do you use this screen capture that it already has?

This entire thing sounds like a load of BS...

Difficult?... maybe... impossible?... tell that to the FuSa guys. Although its not exactly perfect at the moment, they've been filling the hole that Sony's left in this area. I mean, c'mon guys, its impossible ;)

shouldn't this be the other way around? It's had video capture support for the 1seg tuner for Japan for a while now, screen capture support is what they were talking about adding soon.

"Umemura explains that it would be difficult at present to allow 20GB owners to simply attach a wireless LAN adapter via USB and use the service."

and why is that? all it would take is firmware support. This is why homebrew and CFW exists right here... perfect example. Because Sony won't make the changes and additions that they need to make so average Joe Homebrewer has to fill in for Sony's lack of customer attention.

I almost forgot they sold the 20GB in Japan and US. I'm glad they scrapped the idea in the UK.

There is no way I would've bought one but so many people moan about the price of the console, they would've opted for the cheaper model, only to realize down the line that they should have spent the cash on getting the fully fledged model without the need for "extras".

What I would like to see, is Sony updating the crappy web-browser that is on both the PSP and PS3. The one for the PSP I can understand can only do so much, but the PS3 having such a poor browser is very dumb. Also I think that if a freaking cell phone can handle youtube, there is no reason that the PSP can't (the homebrew app PSPtube proves that it can handle flash just fine). But that's just my opinion.

the PS3's web browser has recently been upgraded. It seems a little faster, and flash works on most sites. Yes, the PSP definitely needs a browser upgrade. I almost never use it because it sucks so bad. And you're right, PSPTube definately proves the PSP is capable.

The flash platform remains extremely open, and the PS3 has still not been hacked, Sony would like to keep it that way.

Oh yeah, and let's not even mention that the cell is still a biotch to port to...

the 20GB sold MORE than the 60GB here in VA. everytime i went out to a store they always had 60 gigs, but they never had the 20 gig model. they kept selling out. i really want a wifi adapter for my 20 gig this is really bad news for me, especially since i've never heard of a 20 gig dieing yet. mine still works perfectly.

they'd have to add ALOT of things specifically for the 20 gig, thats why it'd be difficult. they can't do that and ONLY effect 20 gig models. if they did incorperate it in a firmware for ALL ps3's, it might run into issues so yea.. its a letdown yea for 20 gig users like myself, but i guess i can wait longer. my wired connection works better anyways.

Anyway, i dont really care if they make the psp be able to run flash 9. I just hope they keep expanding on the ps store for the psp and maybe they can add freinds on the whole network thing. That would be very cool

psptube is a sort of portal that converts flash video into a type of video the psp can play. at least thats my understanding of it.

PSPtube saves the youtube videos (FLV files) to memory stick, then plays them with its video player with is capable of playing the .FLV codec.

The PS3 is "monopolized" like its M$ counterpart. You can plug in a cheap USB adaptor off ebay for 15 bux, thats what i did for my pc and it works with my ps3 too. Oh and if anyone wants a cheap wifi adaptor, look up routers that are compatible with dd-wrt. its a custom firmware for routers i use it as a wireless adapter for my 360
