Just about everyone knows that the PSP's latest System Update is coming out tomorrow. Numbered 2.80, it's supposed to be having about two new features. And in case any of you needed a confirmation, we've obtained a couple of pictures from Comic Con during Sony's presentation. Here are the images.

Firmware 2.80 features

The said update isn't what we can exactly call "awesome", but the RSS Video feeds will be a welcome addition to those who aren't very much into homebrew (is there such a person?) and those who have 2.71 firmwares (and the dreaded TA-82 motherboards). Still, I don't see too many people getting in on the upgrade bandwagon, homebrew enthusiasts (for obvious reasons) and 2.71 FW owners (for optimism on another downgrader) alike.

Here's the official list of updates right from Sony's press release:
  • RSS Video
  • World Tour Soccer 2 Demo Download
Sony might have seen some glimmer in providing demos to boost sales of PSP games as they have again fused this update with another demo download; well, we'll see how that turns out. Anyways, it was well known that prior to the much hyped FW 3.0, there would be an intermediate release with a bug fixes and a couple of minor additions. Now that we've just about got that intermediate firmware out of the way, I'm practically foaming at the mouth with the thought of playing PS1 games on my PSP within the coming months.

The other picture which we obtained is a slide showing the results of a survey which Sony conducted. Heck, I myself remember answering that survey a few weeks back, and I am looking forward to most of the features in that list. Let's just see how fast the Sony developers can work to get the updates out.

Survey Slide

Anyways, with the newest firmware coming out within a few hours now, I suggest you guys keep checking often. Who knows, the great Booster might just be able to Devhook it.

2.70

Hello, I have FW 2.70, not 2.71 , so can have a little hope for a downgrader, or it's the same,like 2.71? :(

by - 2006-07-26 14:18:06
New feature?

World Tour Soccer 2 Demo Download is hardly a feature IMO

by - 2006-07-26 14:19:29
ha

not too long before the great devhook emulates it and custom firmware takes over

by - 2006-07-26 14:26:00

by plastik - 2006-07-26 14:33:25
2.7 and 2.71 Users

I urge people on 2.7 and 2.71 to stay put.. back in 2005 I was stupid to update to 2.6, and people back then told me that I would never experience homebrew again. I was ready to leave homebrew behind for good and update at the next opportunity to whatever other updates came next. Luckily, 2.6 was eventually hacked, and more recently a downgrader was released, meaning Im back to 1.5. and with dev hook I can still enjoy all firmwares up to 2.71. Im not guaranteeing there will be a hack for 2.7/2.71, and if there ever is it may be months off, but just trust me and stay put for a while. Or you could take the risk and update and hope that 2.8 or 3.0 are hacked in the distant future. You decide

by - 2006-07-26 14:33:41
Easy

I think in a few weeks this new firmware will be decrypted and cracked. And: New firmware = posibility of a new exploit :-) @7 I think sometimes the encryption key will be cracked or an annoyed sony employe will show the key in the internet.... Until then we can enjoy the Devhook. And after a new firmware release it's no problem to wait some weeks until the firmware is cracked :-)

by - 2006-07-26 14:35:51
Don't Don't Don't

Don't upgrade, you will regret it!

by - 2006-07-26 14:58:13
screw the update

who the hell would update if they had 1.5? i'm going to keep running my nifty isos

by senjutsu - 2006-07-26 14:59:21
DO NOT UPGRADE

anyway with the custom firmwares and for multi-firmwares ( LAN switch on/off ) I suppose devHook will surely be able to emulate 2.8 one day, anyway we waited a LONG time before great homebrew began ( at 1st the homebrew was only 1.0 and now running anything and downgrading the firmwares lol ) anyway this upgrade is only the "try" to stop hackers, with only RSS videos... nothing special about it.... ( compared to free ISO loading in 1.5 :S ) anyway, thx DevHook, I hope for devHook amulting 2.8 lol, and 3.0 when the ps3 comes out suppose :( man you are brace to face the giant sony! but thx =D

by - 2006-07-26 15:01:29
FRIENDS DONT LET FRIENDS UPGRADE

WHATEVER U DO 2.70/2.71 USERES DO NOT UPGRADE!!!!!!!! I REAPEAT DO NOT UPGRADE!!!!!!!!!!! I KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE A DOWNGRADER SOON I KNOW IT

#18- Is there any reason you are on PSP Updates telling us that? This site is all about PSP homebrew, why bother visiting this site if you hate it?

by - 2006-07-26 15:25:14
update

just update

by - 2006-07-26 15:25:38
ya

77.8% voted for the abilaty to connect to a console that's not even out yet and more than likely already had that integrated, not much of a vote imo :/

by - 2006-07-26 15:25:56
Maybe...

... is post 18 a joke? Or he doesn't know how much fantastic homebrew exist? Or he is a newcomer that likes the official PSP games? (Yes there there are some good games, but I bought the PSP only for homebrew and for emulators (not for ISOs!!). I play computer games over 20 years, and I like more the good old stuff or homebrew games. All the new 3D games are for me all the same thing. Walking, shooting and collecting stuff in a huge 3D world, and a lot of games are like this... Oh now, better player Metal Blob Solid, Mario, KETM, or the good old Giana Sisters, or Katakis. (Ok, GTA or Burnout and others "newer" games are also very good, I like them too!). But there are also a lot of cool homebrewtools on PSP that I won't miss :-) Homebrew forever!!! If somebody upgrade it is his decision (or his fault?)

by - 2006-07-26 15:26:16
maybe~~

maybe he f***ed up using some and p/bricked 2-3 of his PSPs

by Mystic8277 - 2006-07-26 15:27:17

@21 - Because he is a troll.

by tomek - 2006-07-26 15:53:27
rofl sony

Where is alarm clock or internet radio player :-/ Demo of poor WTS game and rss video,no thanks. Gogogog guys make a 2.70-2.71 downgrader!

by - 2006-07-26 16:17:21
cool.

I have no problem with homebrew, but i'll upgrade whenever a new FW comes out anyway, I f i had another psp I probably would get into the HB scene but right now, I wouldn't want to risk my $250+ investment.

by X-tra - 2006-07-26 16:39:55
Ill see it tommorrow then

Im too tired now for waiting, booster should be able to do this, we first need too take a look at the decrypted files., Maybe we can still use the 2.71 reboot.bin.. I believe in Booster!!!

by - 2006-07-26 17:02:00
none

Homebrew is great and all, but its bad for the psp in the end. All Sony thinks we are doing is cracking all of their newest firmwares so that people can play illegally obtained games, and many people are. I'll upgrade myself once the ps emulator comes out though, until then, all of this rss video stuff is stupid. Maybe if Sony didn't have to spend so much time on psp security, all of those features on the list would already be out ;) Quit stealing games and go buy them!! And at least run emulators on say, a machine that runs games at full speed, such as a pc ;)

by - 2006-07-26 17:09:29
Video Out

Video out is one of the best features on there IMO. It should be higher on the list!

by - 2006-07-26 17:59:04
!!!!

WHOUOUUUUU ANOTHER FIRMWARE FOR DEVHOOK ;) VIVA LA 1.50 FIRMWARE! 1.50 POUR TOUJOURS! 1.50 4 EVER!!!

by - 2006-07-26 18:05:00
homebrew

if they make a ps1 emu... cant some1 try to use that to load homebrew with since every update adds more security wiping out homebrew little by little.... sad right

by - 2006-07-26 18:05:16
keyboard accessory

sony should have put a keyboard accessory on the poll since typing can be a pain sometimes on the psp a cheap mini harddrive would neat 10 gb would suffice for me if sony released that they would finally do something right oh and i cant believe ps3 got more votes then the psone emulator i mean most of the people ive asked said they werent gettin' a ps3 cause of the price sorry sony but im gonna have to go w/ the wii unless the price of the ps3 dramatically drops over the next few years

by - 2006-07-26 18:10:24
Trust me.

Trust me,theres never gunna be a downgrade for 2.7 and 2.71.The only way is if sony makes it which they wont. Why did they make the homebrew thing when they destroy it?They wanted us to use homebrew and they hide it,WTF is that lol.

by Tooplex - 2006-07-26 18:31:34
I dont get it

If the loco roco demo works with 2.71 why dont they hack it find out what makes it work on a 2.71 and expliot it onto loads of other homebrews it should be simple because all loco roco demo is a eboot what are homebrews eboots so that should make it so homebrew work with 2.71?

by - 2006-07-26 18:36:00
To #21

PSP Updates isn't only 4 homebrew. PSP Updates is meant 2 cover all psp related news...not just homebrew

by - 2006-07-26 18:38:35
hahaha

ok if you bought a 2.5+ PSP theen upgrade couse theirs no way for you to downgrade ok... but if you have a 1.0-2.6 PSP not baught by 2.5+ then for the love of God don't upgrade........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless you get a PS3 and want to use your psp on it. But if your that despreate buy a new one and keep the old one.

by - 2006-07-26 19:09:09
safasdf

Connecting your PSP to the PS3 is first? I smell bull***** for that. Who in their right mind would rank that above PS1 games?

by - 2006-07-26 19:16:05
ahhh

why cant they just add them all?

by - 2006-07-26 19:31:19
HAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!! nice try sony

2.80 PFFFFF !!!!! LOLLL are u *****ing kidding me...even if there is gonna be some kind of connection with the ps3 ill never leave kernel mode (i only have one psp) but i hope you hackers crack it tough or im gonna give in...ps1 on psp also sound so tempting

by - 2006-07-26 19:31:39
2.8-1.0

does this mean it is possible to go back to 1.50 or 1.00

by - 2006-07-26 20:04:18
im updating

one cuz i have allready have 2.71 and im not a noob but work and i could buy a ps3 so that is what im doing each week puting a 100 out off my pay cheack till i reach 800 and then ill wait till the ps3 to come out and i know that the ps3 cost 500 or 600 which ever pack u want but what about tax's and a game i cant wait till the ps3 come's out and i could use my psp with it to so that is why im updating no other reason i love hombrew but o well

by - 2006-07-26 20:08:03
Well...

With add-ons like that, I shall be sticking with my 1.50 PSP. Keep trying Sony. You'll get the updates people want eventually.

no doubt #39. good observation. really, who would vote for psp-ps3 connectivity of 2 systems in one?!

by - 2006-07-26 21:29:05
d

why would they vote on ps3/psp connectivity when THIS IS OBVIOUS THAT WOULD HAPPEN HELLO STU PID POOL "SONY MADE THAT?"

by - 2006-07-26 21:31:28
d

#45 what are u talking about c'mon what? this thing is not even out yet

by - 2006-07-26 21:37:00
free psp

here is a site that actually gives ou a free psp. they make money for your referalls so it actually works. here is the url... http://psps.freepay.com/?r=31315202

by - 2006-07-26 22:00:54
lol

lol it looks like fake but i hope its not.

by - 2006-07-26 22:55:03
you guys are lost

first off homebrews not saying that their are not some good homebrews out their but moste of them suck second eventually sony will make u upgrade look at the dashboard hack for the xbox. Xbox live makes you upgrade your dashboard there for removing the dashboard hack and last i know every on is saying big deal about rss videos but if the right person works with this we could be able to stream videos from the computer to the psp like you can with music with mytunesrss so i say if you like ur homebrews then for now dont upgrade and us the devhook but eventually sony will make you update the could do this by not saying that you have to update to play a new umd game but then the first time it starts up on your psp it will install the new firmware with out leting you know it is by asking you if u would like to prepare the game and when you say yes it will run the firmware

by dtom2444 - 2006-07-26 23:04:59
uhhh......yea

i'm gunna upgrade. i have A LOT of vids on my comp, so the video rss feature on 2.8 would at least free up some space on my 1g mem stick (if nothing else...). and btw, c'mon guys lets be realistic, chances are a 2.7 2.71 exploit prob wont be found for some time, if at all.

by lansingone - 2006-07-26 23:15:58
am i the only one with doubt that booster can hack it?

i don't think the devhook hack is invincible, notice we never find a way to use hacks twice. multi hack, tiff exploit, GTA exploit, and now i believe devhook firmware emulation, i think somone needs to start looking for a new exploit in case booster can't get it to work.

by - 2006-07-27 00:09:27
...

I just installed 2.80 and it doesn't have a demo with it.

by - 2006-07-27 00:37:17
SONY KNOWS

That these hackers are getting into there firmware updates. So if they introduce too many new features this will provide buffer overflow or exploits. There just fighting the inevitable.

by - 2006-07-27 00:59:53
It's here!!

it's here!! (not on any sony site yet) How 2 Get it: [1.5 Users] 1. DevHook to 2.71 2. Go to Network Update 3. Download that sh*t (May become corrupt) [2.7+ users] Same as above (No devhook) ;-) (@ 2.71 i won't become corrupt) DO NOT UPDATE!!! JUST EXPLORE IT WITH PSPBREW!!!

by commyostrich - 2006-07-27 01:47:52
guitar you are misinformed

guitar4pgr you can stream videos from your computer already WITH HOMEBREW that's been out for a while now. It's called PiMP Streamer and it can stream a video file in full resolution from anywhere on your computer to your psp on your wireless network. So Sony is basically playing catch up to the homebrew scene. and sure a lot of homebrew ain't the best but there is still a ton of homebrew that is amazing. PSP Radio, PiMP Streamer, all the emulators, oh and up there on that poll is instant messaging...well we can do that already with a homebrew called AFKIM so once again...Sony is behind homebrew. There are tons more homebrew that are fantastic but I don't feel like listing them all. oh and as far as another thing on that poll "text messaging"...well you can also do that with AFKIM. So by using already released and working homebrew you can 1)do what the newest firmware can do (and also without devhook) and 2) do 2 things that are on the most requested list. Oh and that poll is stupid. No one wants connectivity over PS1 games! Are you kidding me?? And as far as the mini hard drive...that will never happen. Sony will fear if they put one out then piracy will increase since there's more storage space. And video output seems difficult to put in the system just by firmware updates but of course...people have already developed ways to have video out but it does require modding your psp. But here's to Sony for putting out a sweet game system with a bunch of capabilities they didn't want it to have. :P

by - 2006-07-27 02:28:28
Why Sony refuse the whole homebrew

I suppose some homebrew don't harm the commercial benefit of Sony and its followers. The pdf reader, AFKIM, PSP Radio and so on, they are definitely enhanced the charming of psp. Why refuse them?

by - 2006-07-27 02:59:08
Having doubts

I think the only reason we were able to downgrade 2.5/6 psp was because they could run the E-loader. Now 2.70/1 doesn't have any homebrew support whatsoever, they're gonna have to find a completely different exploit (Which could take months and months), then find a way to run a downgrader on it. I'm having serious doubts they can do that at any point in the near future, looks like I'm going to have to get my @ss a modchip. Just finding a place in the UK to fit it for me (Since I'm not any good at soldering/electronics), is going to be a complete pain in the @ss. I have the cash, I'd get one fitted tomorrow but I can't... I'm still going to stay at 2.70 however, in the hope a miracle happens. I never thought they'd create a 2.5/6 downgrader but they did. And props to them for that!

by Beansta - 2006-07-27 17:39:48
hah

ive got 2 psps(no offence 2 the guys with 1) so i have the best of bth worlds, and a 2 gig and 1 gig mem stick i can store nethin i want. i feel sorry for those guys that have 2 suffer with the ta 082 mtherboards. and psp Radio is gr8 i use it all the time!!!!!!! more 2 the point though i think sony is wasting their time with the updates. RSS Video......... come n sony think of sumthin different. @58 u have a very good point there, with sony being behind us homebrewers with the instant messaging and whatnot. when FW 3.0 comes out ill def be upgrading...........but ill still have the ther psp 2 do all the cool homebrewing i luv so much, big it up 2 all the PSP devs

by - 2006-08-10 04:41:29
$ony's Strategy

So it seems $ony has a new Strategy against Homebrew. Hire people to pretend that homebrew sucks and that we should all give up on it. Nice try TOOLS!!! This reminds me of the time when Micro$oft hired all those people to say Window Me was fantastic. Homebrew isn't about stealing anything it's about freedom. To not let a company force you into downloading something you don't want to download. People should have the right to download and install whatever they want on their own PSP. It's called individual freedom and privacy. $ony shouldn't have controll over most of us. And I say "most" because there will always be follow alongs. That's cool because it's their choice. If Sony only cared more about making great products than controlling what people do with thier systems. Then PSP would be outselling the DS. Why do people prefer the Nintendo DS? Because ¥entendo doesnt force anyone to do anything. And DS' are pretty much useless too. Despite the stuff you made up most homebrew software actually work better than you think. It's clear that you dont know anything about homebrew. I've been installing Homebrew programs since the release of the PSP. I buy my games (all 38 of them), why would I download a game that I like with missing audio and video files? Stop sterotyping about something you know nothing about.
