Multiple Firmware ModuleAdmin Note: Some of here at QJ have a suspicion that 0okm may be playing a little prank on us, so we feel we should warn you that the following may be a bit of a satire on 0okm's part regarding the current modchip madness. ;)

0okm has posted some more information on the PSP Multiple Firmware Module in order to clear up some misconceptions about the product, mainly the fact that this device is a Module and not a Modchip. As most common users don't know the difference between these two pieces of hardware, 0okm has tried to clear this up with an FAQ on the Multi Firmware Module.

The firmware module is for:
  1. Development and research into PSP system firmware
  2. fw 1.0/1.5 users to play with a newer firmware functions and have an 'unbrickable' PSP.
  3. Bricked PSP owners to unbrick their PSPs (need another FW 1.00/1.50 PSP or "PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor")
The PSP Firmware Module will cost less than $50 US and will be easy to install with only 20 points needing to be soldered. Here's the interesting part for those not 'in the know'. The difference between a Multi Firmware Module and a Modchip is that the module integrates with the current circuit board, whereas a modchip is a new chip with an integrated circuit. The firmware module supports FW1.00/1.50 + FW1.00/1.50/1.51/1.52/2.00/2.01/2.50/2.60/2.70/2.71 etc...

The module works on TA-079/080/081 PSPs, and just as with Undiluted Platinum, owners of TA-082 PSPs will not be able to use this module. When the "PSP Multi Firmware module" starts to sell, 0okm will show users how to distinguish these PSP hardware differences without the need to open the PSPs case and invalidate your warranty.

0okm is currently looking for a producer to mass-produce the firmware module, and expects it to be in production as soon as July! It will be inside the PSP, but apparently will be very easy to solder. You will be able to write to the flash externally using the PSP's USB function, or using a "PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor" (available for around $15); in essence being able to 'downgrade' your 2.xx PSP.

We will be keeping you apprised of updates as they come in. It looks like the future for 2.xx users is bright with the development of hardware modifications for the PSP. With both this and Undiluted platinum currently in development, we can all look forward for a better future for the PSP community.

Cool.

I hope some UK retailers sell this....
by - 2006-06-18 03:43:02
f*ck yeah!

i've got to get me one of these!
by - 2006-06-18 03:44:19
Oooh..

Sounds pretty funky, but not so sure about all the soldering. I'm wondering how many people are going to start offering a modchipping service and then charge both an arm and quite possibly an additional leg for it.

YAY! This is going to pwn!

sony

as long as sony doesnt get theres hands on 1 of these before 3.00 hopefully it would be fine , anyways i hope this hits AUS within a resonable ammount of time of being released in US, cant wait for the day i spit at sony and downgrade my 2.71
by warlord7856 - 2006-06-18 04:11:45
:D

cant wait to hear a price for this, cos hopefully my friends that have firmware higher than 2.0 might get it. Also it will be interesting to see how easy it is to solder, because soldering n00bs like me still probably couldnt do it, so it will be interesting to see installation prices. Also, another point of interest will be wether undiluted platinum prices drop because of this.

voltage regulator

"The module works on TA-079/080/081 PSPs, and just as with Undiluted Platinum, owners of TA-082 PSPs will not be able to use this module." Looks to me as someone needs to learn about voltage regulators there is no reason why the UP modchip if it is real of course want work on all PSP just by regulating the voltage properly an all it would mean that the wiring for the different modes would be slightly different so a very easy thing to do any way good luck with your own project Ookm it's looking good and hope to see it on sale soon and hope you don't have to many technical issues during the production
by - 2006-06-18 04:25:22
About damn time

unbricks PSP's,play 2.50 games with an 1.50 PSP,and If this downgrades 2.50... *Does quirky dance*
by - 2006-06-18 05:12:31
Thats it

*****ing losers..I'm gonna report this to SONY :D

external?

"You will be able to write to the flash externally using the PSP's USB function, or using a "PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor" (available for around $15); in essence being able to 'downgrade' your 2.xx PSP" does this mean no soldering?
by - 2006-06-18 05:24:06
difference??

#13 The artical says it "only" needs 20 points to solder. So no, soldering is needed. "The difference between a Multi Firmware Module and a Modchip is that the module integrates with the current circuit board, whereas a modchip is a new chip with an integrated circuit." I still don't understand the difference...
by - 2006-06-18 05:26:50
read it again

No, it means exactly what it says, you can write to the flash via USB or a parallel port adapter.
by yoshinatsu - 2006-06-18 05:30:52
No big difference

I still can't understand the difference, too. This thing may not be a modchip, but if it is able to downgrade 2.50 to 1.50 then where's the big difference? ALSO, I hope "bricked" people did not trash their PSPs...

Clarification

My previous comment was to "tps*****s" not Percival.

...

I was going to rip the photoshop job apart, but instead found my way to the authors site and he claims it is a ''(simulation picture)'' so i'll let him off; this will be a good thing for the PSP no doubt, nice work 0okm... BUT... ''Use PSP's USB to copy the FW image file from PC to PSP Memory Stick Duo - then Use software to program the NAND Flash'' Pardon me but anyone in the know, or have an idea whether this is possible? The only way i could think this possible was if the chip came pre-flashed with a firmware on it, else how would those with 2.7's ''Use the software to program the NAND Flash'' Is the software on the pc or the psp? or both? Cheears

by - 2006-06-18 06:04:20
nicee...but brick on bricks?

but is it possible to brick your psp with this? can you unbrick a modded psp with another mod chip?? lol...damn this is hottt. 15$$!!!
by - 2006-06-18 07:20:52
rolf

Devhook is so much better the only time i would use this is if i bricked my PSP if i wanted multi firmwares DevHook would be my choice
by lukahn - 2006-06-18 07:28:45
Difference

The difference between this, and the modchip is simple. With this, it's just going to be one square to solder onto the existing motherboard of the PSP. With Undiluted Platinum, you need to instal another motherboard ontop of the existing one. Basically, this is going to be smaller, and hopefully alot easier to put in.
by - 2006-06-18 07:32:11
offtopic

i just noticed that on the pspupdates page it sais this has 154 jump ups, but here it sais 129.... just thought i should point it out.
by - 2006-06-18 07:35:52
to #22 what a noob

can devhook allow you to use firmware 2.71? nope. This module will allow devs to take more risks knowing that there psp are unbrickable so people will have better homebrew.
by - 2006-06-18 07:55:48
omg

holy ****!!! this is great news for EVERYONE!!!!!
by - 2006-06-18 07:58:24
to #25

well there will be updates to devhook i dont think its going to stay the way it is forever. if you want to take the rest of opening your psp and maybe messing stuff up be my guess but unless you got a bricked psp i dont think its worth it
by - 2006-06-18 08:11:03
stupid

u guys are stupid this does not downgrade your psp, it makes u feel like u downgrade ur psp because you will be able to switch between firmwares. there is no actual downgrading going on. this doesnt UNbrick your psp, it makes ur bricked psp use-able by adding a second flash.
by - 2006-06-18 08:11:59
ooof

this thing looks a lot more useless than undiluted platinum. a modchip has its own flash and memory whereas this uses the psp's. i think this will be a s hitload slower. and 20 points of sldering doesnt sound quite easy. anyway, sony says firmware updates will block out undiluted platinum. either way, you might as well ebay a 1.5 psp cuz the modchip is quite expensive(99.bux) and for installation service, another 99.
by - 2006-06-18 08:13:43
"u guys are stupid this does not downgrade your psp, it makes u feel like u downgrade ur psp"

#27, there is no "rest of opening your PSP". Haven't you read anything?
by - 2006-06-18 08:21:46
i am new..

how i check if my psp is TA-079/080/081 PSP.The only thing i find is that the battery is 3.6v and that the psp is psp-1001 can you help?
by - 2006-06-18 08:31:40

im gonna stick with firmware emulation for games and not this *****

WORK WITH CORE PACK

***will this work with the core pack do you think"?
by cory1492 - 2006-06-18 08:55:13
...

TA-082 was found in a PSP-1006 IIRC "just as with Undiluted Platinum, owners of TA-082 PSPs will not be able to use this module" based on what knowledge? we know ookm didnt get it to work, doesnt mean the other guys didnt. ookm's chip has its own flash memory. The only way to program it so you can downgrade/unbrick a psp is to use the PC parallel flasher. After you have 1.5/1.0 on it you can then boot homebrew and whatnot. Soldering on this one is going to be fairly tough, it relies on wires (like a PS2 chip, with smaller solder points) and not a flexible pcb (like the slim PS2 HDD addon)
by RaiderX - 2006-06-18 09:21:36
NICE!

i have a 1.5 from release, so Im safe. 0okm IF YOU PUT A NICE PLAIN BLACK CASE AROUND THE EXTERNAL PART, I WILL DEFINATELY BUY ONE! only one question, will the UMD drive still be able to open?
by RaiderX - 2006-06-18 09:25:29
nvm, ignore my last post

jUST read the part where it said that its gonn e be internal. thats perfect. Now Im gonan buy one for sure! lol at this: "without the need to open the PSPs case and invalidate your warranty." I find it ironic since youre gonna have to void the warranty to install the module
by - 2006-06-18 09:43:58
Prepare for dissapointment....

This is fake..... This is fake.... This is fake... Fake fakedy fakefakefake....
by - 2006-06-18 09:48:42
Make sure

Well, Is this work with 2.71 ? Ps. I just want to make sure....Cuz, I just update my FW yesterday. T_T
by - 2006-06-18 09:58:02
@RaiderX

Read the whole sentence! "0okm will show users how to distinguish these PSP hardware differences without the need to open the PSPs case and invalidate your warranty. " You will be able to tell if your PSP will work with this module without opening your case, so you don't have to invalidate your warranty unneccessarily. @18: The Software would be on the PC and access the flash through USB. The software would program the flash included with the module, not the actual PSPs Flash. I would reply to the rest of the questions people have asked, but there's too many and frankly all of them can be answered by read the article.
by - 2006-06-18 10:14:11
Will this thing will came with...

will this came with the PC EPP LPT Interface Adaptor or you will have to buy it apart?
by GameLordOmega - 2006-06-18 10:44:25
hmm

IF this is real, I'm getting one. Still havent gotten Katamari working, so I'll just launch 2.6 and play it from there.

BIRTHDAY PRESENT

I'm going to buy the psp in 1-2 weeks for my birrday and Have done alot of "research". I have $780 right now. I'm might buy: Extra battery: $50.00 CND 2gb stick or 4gb: $125 or $245 Datel Wifi Router: $60.00 PSP: I hope ill find v1.5 for under $300 Total- WHOPPING $600 ..oh welll ill have so many free games on stick...worth it...plus the emulators Should i get the 2gb stick or 4gb stick? How many ISO's can you put 2gb/4gb???? ----> Does GTA ISO work with Devhook??? hOW much space. Can you give me a link of working Devhook ISO? Where can i find a psp 2.0 or under (i'm willing to downgrade). WOuld EB games have used psp's v2.0? (I live in Abbotsford B.C., Canada)
by - 2006-06-18 12:08:35
to number 45

gta iso is 843mb , 4 gig would be nice if your willing to pay that much,. and yes it does work with devhook. it depends on how much the iso is.. sports games are like 300-500mb.. and buy a value pack.. its probably your best chances at gettin a 1.5/2.0 fw.. hope this helps caio
by - 2006-06-18 12:34:43
to #45

you should try eBay to get your v1.5 psp. Also the 4gb mem stick costs $180 in NY, you should try amazon.com they have the 4gb for $195 with free shipping
by - 2006-06-18 12:44:35
hmmmm

can you change the firmware of the psp by using this. if so then this is a good investment for only 50 bucks.
by akuma2099 - 2006-06-18 12:54:25
I agree with number 22

I am not going to open up my PS and risk damaging something in the process. Plus you have to solder 20 points to the board. I think I will just stay with devhook even though it doesn't support 2.1 yet it will in time. Still 2.71 doesn't have anything I really want just some flash support and not even the newest flash plus I don't even like flash that much. Also the best thing about devhook is it's free and easy to use.
by akuma2099 - 2006-06-18 12:59:45
oops sorry typo

Sorry I ment to say that devhook doesn't support 2.71 yet but in time it will. I figured someone would point out that mistake glad I caught it in time :)
by - 2006-06-18 13:40:13
#12 u r gay

u do know that sony is constantly watching sites such as this, so its not a secret or nothing.
by iNCREDiPiNOY - 2006-06-18 14:09:42
I agree with number 49!

and number 22 The reason why I choose Dev Hook, because its faster and easier to emulates full firmware and iso loader on my 1.50. I tried to open my PSP with the cross screwdriver but the nut bolts are loose and stuck inside; and there's no way to open my PSP, since I bought the housing (backplate) few months ago and the repair man couldn't get this fixed. So ff you guys have similar problem like me after buying your Modchip then get a DevHook for free. BTW, 2.71 will be updating soon for the New DevHook! So keep your eyes on Booster and his team's Project!
by - 2006-06-18 17:04:52
slightly confruzed

i gots a 2.6, will this let me play homebrews made for 1.5 only so that means i dont have to use the gta launcher?!!!
by - 2006-06-18 18:03:14
lol @ qj

this didnt have the "disclaimer" when i read it this morning :P
by seargent007 - 2006-06-18 18:38:40
oh please

99% chance UP works with ALL psps, 58% chance this guy is BSing, thats the most unproffesional "module" ever. I like the idea of a second flash modchip more anyway, i mean, when 1 dies, that $90 will have made my $700 in my psp, games, and accessories worth it
by - 2006-06-18 20:23:13
Well...

Any module that can reflash chips is worth the cash. Personally, I am still trying to determine which chip on my board is the NAND and even if I can reflash it where can I find the original BIOS files to reflash it?
by - 2006-06-18 20:58:25
What the...

Why can't people read the article before posting all this cr@p?

sony supports this cuz so many ppl will destroy their psps trying to open them and will have to buy new ones ;P
by - 2006-06-19 07:12:14
wtf

whats the difference between this and the modchip.... they have the same features and it has a flash? so basically its the same sh*t can u have a dual load fw system like ud ...>pretty confused
