PSP Homebrew Weekend Warrior - Image 1

The word of the week is "exploit".

exploit (plural exploits)

  1. A heroic or extraordinary deed.
  2. An achievement. The first summit of mount Everest was a stunning exploit.
  3. (computing) A program or technique that exploits a vulnerability in other software.
To homebrew aficionados, the work done by MaTiAz and all of the others involved in the TIFF exploit certainly falls under the first two definitions, not just the third. The PSP homebrew scene revolved around the Laughing Man TIFF exploit this week, and while there have been incidents of the exploit not working for some users, a general feeling of rejoicing was definitely in the air. Let's take a look back at what transpired.

Laughing Man - Image 1I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.
  • First came the Hello World TIFF exploit for PSP Phats running OFW 5.03. Link.
  • Then came a version that works for both the Phat and Slim. Link.
  • And what's this? It also works on the PSP 3000? Link.
  • Finally, something for the future: Davee has found a new kernel exploit and is working on a HEN enabler for the 3000. Link.
Homebrew Applications
  • JK108's Ultimate PSPTube got a new HighMemoryMod for faster loading thanks to Ardatan. Link.
  • After a short hiatus, Mr305 returned with a compatibility fix and speed boost update for the funky trippy psychedelic plugin, TweakDISPLAY. Link.
  • Team P86 whipped the Netfront Internet Browser into extreme shape, letting it reach a browsing speed increase of up to 200% on the Slim. Link.
  • Mr. Anonymous Japanese Coder Guy is so secretive, he didn't even say what's new in the latest release of his gpSP mod. Link.
  • Light_Alex's PSN License Manager got two releases this week: the initial release (Link) and an update that adds some information before files are written (Link).
  • Ooblik dropped an update for his XBMC Controller PSP homebrew app. Who says Sony and Microsoft consoles can't get along? Link.
  • Filters and various system codecs can now be added to Winnydows Commander. Link.
  • Total_Noob's Ultimate VSH menu gets a graphical overhaul. Link.
  • More bugfixes and better sound emulation were added in revision 1001 of jpcsp 0.2. Link.
Homebrew Games:
  • XMB destruction is the only thing happening in the Homebrew games section this week, thanks to an update for zeroxorxdiexskater's Smash My PSP! Link.
That's it for this week, folks. If you wanna discuss all the exploit madness with other homebrew fans, head straight to our PSP forums. Be sure to keep your eyes on the QJ.NET PSP blog so you don't miss any breaking news in the world of PSP homebrew. Until next week!

HEN enabler, eh?

Kind of like an ATM machine.

What a LOUSY definition for the word exploit!

What a LOUSY definition for the word exploit!

You can't use the word you are defining into the definition itself (as in #3) This is a better definition for an exploit for #3: A means of gaining access to a computer system, typically through a known bug in a program or operating system.

No you didn't get it

a HEN enabler (HENEN) is something that goes into RAM and allows you to load a HEN. But they forgot to add that for this to work, you need a HENEN Enabler (HENENEN).

Wow.

You're just being technical.
by Serosis - 2009-04-19 19:15:26
well

You forgot the other definitions of the more modern sense: 1. To employ to the greatest possible advantage: exploit one's talents. 2. To make use of selfishly or unethically: a country that exploited peasant labor. See synonyms at manipulate. 3. To advertise; promote.

double post

I meant to say that in the case of homebrew it is more of a mix between 1st and 2nd definition I put up. Sure the psp is exploited to it's fullest using homebrew but more often than not people are being selfish and pirating games for it.
