PSP FW 6.20 coming tomorrow in Japan UPDATE Now live for all regions

Sony's giving out a big firmware double-whammy to celebrate the PS3's third birthday. With Firmware 3.10 coming out for the PS3 today, Sony's following it up with the release of FW 6.20 for the PSP tomorrow, November 19th, in Japan.

The highlight of this firmware update would be the addition of the PSP comics service that they announced back at TGS, as well as the addition of another column to the XMB. This applies to all PSP models, from the 1000 to the new PSP Go.

Downloadable comics will be available in Japan on December 10th. Price would be falling around Â¥ 420 (about US$ 4.70)for a complete comic book, and between Â¥ 50-Â¥ 150 (about US$ .50-1.70) if you just want a chapter. Enterbrain, Bandai Visual, Kadokawa Shoten, and Square Enix will count themselves among content providers.

No word, however, on when the update will go stateside.

Its true though. PSP has absolutely no friend support outside of in-game online menus. They should focus on the basics before adding unnecessary apps. But how its Sony, we'll most likely never see that.

I don't know if you're new to the PSP, but it's not a case of "if you don't like it, don't update" because a short time will come when you are forced into updating to play new releases.

It's going to be a proprietary format developed specifically for the PSP in conjunction with Marvel and titles will be available via subscription/download on PSN.

It's out and I updated my GO to it.

The comic book reader is pathetic. It's out but no comics are so wtf $ony?

It doesn't read CBR files or PDF so I'm not even sure what format the files are in.

There is a new DIR on the MS called BOOK which I guess is where they go but nothing to say what format or anything.

Would've been nice of $ony to give us at least 1 free book to try it with.

Oh, BTW, you have to download the reader so its another download after the firmware is installed, just like that crap music addon I never use. I cant even remember the name if it.

I really hope they start putting in good stuff in the next firmwares. Lately it's been really crap.

DA said he will make a new firmware when there is something worthy of CFW in it. Looks like its not 620.

A comic book reader is not needed on the PSP. It's a gimmic. There are other features that are better and needed for the PSP but they chose to put this in.

I'm actually yet to read my first digital comic, and what's the bet $ony will charge you for them.

And Sony had said from when they first announced the digital comics service that it wouldn't be available until December, they just made the reader available so you will have it when the comics come out.

You will have to buy the comics...

But for anyone running legit firmware, you can open .cbr/cbz files with winrar (and I assume winzip) and you will find it's just an archive full of .jpg's

So you extract the jpg's and you can read the comics using the psp photo function...

Abit of a pain in the ass...but hey, can't complain over free.
