PSP FW 3.30 update - Network and Download

Ó

Okay, so it says 2.7something, but we needed a pic for this! - Image 1This was sneaky. Both the QJ and Exophase forums have discovered that Network Update's been picking up a FW 3.30 (yes, that's 3.30) firmware update in the airwaves. Exophase even has a downloadable EBOOT of it. It's not up on PlayStation.com as we write this, though...

(Yes, we know the pic to the right says 2.71. It was either that or the internationally recognized symbol for recycling.)

Which is why there's no full changelog to bring for now. Wait for the update to this when PS.com decides to play catchup, or when one of us bravely decides to sacrifice his or her personal PSP to the all-consuming maw of FW 3.30 to see what's changed (or at least far enough to see the changelog). Or we'll just update this article after the results of that ultimate sacrifice (until they come out with a downgrader...) reveals the changelog.

Otherwise, here's what's known to be the changes in 3.30, so far, via both sources (and we also don't know why they'd skip 3.2x...):
  • display thumbnails under RSS Channel
  • expanded support for PlayStation Network-downloaded PSOne games (but what specific support?)
  • support for displaying thumbnails for files in VIDEO folder (more reason to use a file stealthing device now, ain't it?)
  • option to set Disc-Load speed to Fast or Normal
Downloadable below conveniently comes in a folder named "UPDATE", thus saving you the hassle of having to create that folder on the PSP Memory Stick/PSP/GAME subdirectory.

Update: We had a hard time grabbing this update because the official PlayStation site suddenly became tricky and sneaky as the FW 3.30 itself. In the site's System Update page, details on the new firmware update went up and then it suddenly reverted to February's 3.11 update. We had to refresh our page over and over and when the latest update was on display once more, we immediately took a snapshot of the changelog.

With that jazz out of the way, here's the real deal:

* This update is for those who own PSP units with model number PSP-1001. If you happen to have purchased your handheld outside North America, don't attempt to perform this update at all.
* It is true that video game compatibility has been improved as the list of supported PlayStation Network (PSN) titles has been expanded.
* It is true that thumbnail images of items has been added t o the RSS channel.
* It is also true that thumbnail images of videos stored in the "Video" folder of your memory stick.
* Speaking of which, the following formats are also now playable in the said "Video" folder: MPEG-4/H.264 AVC Main Profile (AVC CABAC) with sizes 720x480, 352x480, and 480x272
* Most importantly, a "Use Wireless Hotspot" feature has been added under Network Settings.

As always, we recommend assessing whether you're ready to download the new firmware or not. You can also try and wait until the loyal homebrew stalwarts have given this a thorough look.

Thanks to Hockeyroks33 and TwistyValhalla for the heads up!

I think they opened up this possibility for those who create games. not something you can adjust in the XMB. I say that because of an interview I read on here a little while ago with David Jaffe and he said that he wished they could use 333mhz for GoW on PSP. I'm sure sony would cater to his every need considering he is responsible for one of the hottest games around right now.

Curse those guys who share iso torrents, call them ghay. QJ does not have any links to to isos, and does not encourage you to use isos instead of buying the games. Hell, every once a weak there're even "ads" of bargains in the news.

If they realy don't want us to crack there firm. Maybe they should release the original lua player 2.0 with some bugfixes. It has wifi support, gpu support etc. But it can't flash, and i don't think it's possible to write an iso loader in lua, unless it uses some exploit. » V IMP FOR DA PSP

BOOK REVIew- Boy Soldier by Andy McNab READ V.IMP FOR DA PSP TRUST ME PLEAAAAAAAAAAAZ

This book, by Andy McNab and Robert Rigby, is filled with suspense, adventure, corruption and packed with twists, which are the things that a teenage boy looks for in a novel.

The book starts of with a boy, Danny, who is trying out for the SAS. It introduces him as a strong, hard-working and determined 17 year-old boy. Danny aced every task that was given to him and felt that he had done the best he possibly could. He was confident that he would get in but when he found out that he was dropped he was flabbergasted. The reason that he doesn’t get in is because of something that his â€missing’ grandfather did. This is a great way to start a book since it shows the reader that his grandfather has done something really bad and which urges the reader to keep on reading the book.

The author then switches to a different storyline. It shows an old man who works at a burger bar, called Frankie. It shows how this man leads a private life. The author makes it quite obvious that this man was Danny’s grandfather. Meanwhile, Danny and his friend Elena are on the computer researching Danny’s grandfather, Fergus Watts. They are soon astounded when they find out that Danny’s grandfather was a traitor to his country and betrayed the SAS in a mission in Columbia. This is a smart was to link the plots since the reader knows that the two different stories are going to link when Danny eventually meets his granddad.

The next thing in the book is that Danny goes to the retired ex-SAS area to ask a few questions about his grandfather. He finds a man who knows a bit about him but won’t let out any information- that man calls up Fergus and Danny suspects that. He pick-pockets his mobile, gets the number and returns the phone. It is an ingenious way to show how Danny manages to get his Fergus’ number.

From that number his genius friend Elena manages to track down Fergus and that gave Danny a location, exactly what he needed but what he didn’t realize was he was being followed by the special services all the way. At the moment that Danny meets his grandfather, one would expect there to be a happy moment but it was the opposite- His grandfather realizes that that was Danny and they exchanged a few bad words which was followed by his grandfather grabbing Danny and shoving him in his car. He explained to Danny that now the SAS wanted then both dead but Danny didn’t was too angry to understand. It was extremely funny to visualise the reaction when Danny me this grandfather and vice-versa.

They then drive carefully to Fergus’ house knowing that they were being followed and then ran in his house and took cover underground in a secret compartment. After many MI6 burst in with their guns holstered looking the kill them but got nowhere. At that moment I realized that now their mission was to survive and they were a team although Danny was still angry.

After all the hatred towards Fergus by Danny and the reader, he explains that he was framed by the SAS. It was actually the leader who was the traitor but he had to set-up someone. Danny finds it hard to understand at first but he realizes that his grandfather is telling the truth. There is then a new objective- to prove Fergus’ innocence. He explained that there was only one man that knew and had to get to him… This was a happy moment on the book where Danny and Fergus finally get along!

They had to go from place to place getting closer and closer to their target but had to be careful since there were people out to get them all over the place. During their time in hiding, Fergus was teaching all the SAS tricks to Danny of survival.

After a very long while, they get right outside of their target’s home after encountering tough biker guys, sleeping in beanbags and urinating to plastic bags! They go in the garden and see a man talking to the wife of their target. They find out that the MI6 were one step ahead and killed their only source- this was probably the saddest moment in th

I typically find it amusing when a person incapable of expressing himself in complete sentences labels others as "ignorant". Americans are not dumb, nor are they weak. If either was the case, would we be the best country to live in on the planet? Take your unsubstantiated anti-american bull***** and drown yourself in it.

» .mp4 to 480x272

For those looking for programs to encode full res video to your psp:

Sony Vegas will of course do this. If anyone has Nero 7, Nero Recode 2 will do this also. Just open Recode 2, recode to nero digital, load DVD or video files...settings are as follow:

1. Nero Digital Category --> Nero Digital AVC

2. Nero Digital Profile --> Standard AVC (doesn't really matter though)

3. Uncheck "Fit to Target"

4. Click on "Video" button, window comes up and click on "resize" tab, click "custom resize" and change dimensions to 480x272. I keep "letterboxing" checked because this will keep true aspect ratio of the orginal movie. Click ok

5. Click settings button, change "boost volume" to "Very High" (optional). click ok

6. Move "movie quality" bar left or right to get desired output file size. This will not move if "fit to target" is checked.

7. Recode movie. Quality of these files is excellent IMO.

A free route is to use Xvid4PSP, this is truley a great program and is not limited to full res PSP videos. Get it from http://www.winnydows.com/index.html

I was having a convo with my pal at school yesterday, he is quite informed when it comes to psps, anyways i was saying to him " If i can brick my psp and send it back to sony do you think they would install the latest version of the firmware?" Then he said that he didnt know. Then i proceeded to ask if there was away of bricking it. He replied by say "yeah you have to start an update then just take your battery, or memory stick out." Then i told him that i had 3.11 installed already. He stopped for a minute, then said "Then i dont think you can." But now that theres a new update i can brick it and send it to sony.

» "Use Network Hotspot"

Dude, the "Use Network Hotspot" isn't new. It's been in DaX's 3.10 OE since it was created, and I *BELIEVE* it was in 3.03 OE as well.

Get with the program, Sony. This is exactly why I put all my faith in Dark_Alex and his custom firmwares, as well as all the hard working, deticated homebrew devs. If it wasn't for the homebrew scene, the PSP would completely suck.

I HAVE ff7 fully playable on the psp, it's not the psp's fault it won't play. Sorry if you didn't know that ppl. » to weqwe

your confusing homebrew with piracy

the two seem to go hand in hand on PSP

but if iso loading was blocked then homebrew (which is user created games and applications) would be a great addition to PSP

however, because of devhook this is unlikely to happen

it is too difficult to enable homebrew without opening up to piracy

and your right. if they did, all the third parties would be on their arse like a hemorrhoid saying "what were you thinking?"

i dont think its impossible to block iso loaders, its just very difficult.

by Kichigai - 2007-03-28 11:52
» Speak For Yourself!

With some DAMN good games coming out soon, including the heavily anticipated Final Fantasies, you know Sony is going to push them to require 3.30. So, we have games there. Then we have improved POPS load speeds. Not too critical for most of my games (FFIX, RPGs, etc.). Then there's the high-res videos, which isn't too new, but we also get CABAC. This means that most H.264 videos on the net will play with NO MODIFICATION AT ALL. Even the iPod can't claim to run CABAC, and I have some 352x288 res videos. CABAC (Main Profile) offers an improved quality-to-bitrate ratio, which means better videos with smaller size. I'm ready for 3.30 OE-A when it's ready. Maybe we can finally play FFVII.

i have lived in europe and usa, europe is fine but not on the same level, everything is old people get paid much lower, World wars really hurt europe much more then it did the usa. But i still like France and Spain Italy etc. Anyways theres a reason why the usa is made of of europeans they got out to come here, anyways to all americans if ou really thik the typical american is stupid an ignorant etc, examine who you are around, the fact the usa has had all major if not all major inventions of the 20 and 21st century surely is not stupid. By the way europe goes from nice standards of living to 3rd world country style, please look at that. I prefer europe becasue i get paid more and usa is a tad more stable. Notice why all french doctors come over here, not all but alot. Same with other parts. Also notice why people from europe and all over the world come to usa hospitals, Colleges, etc ???????

Theres stupid people everywhere theres 305 million + possesions 15 million + illegals 20-40 milllion depending on who you talk to. Thats alot of damn people, Europe is VERY small, and to the member that said they wanted to goto germany, are you serious, out of all of europe i saw that would have to be last. In europe 2,000 usd monthly is considered alot of money ./ raise a family thats 24 k USD - taxes......that is hood life here, atleast not a good place, maybe if both parents made that it would be cool. Thats just one example, In paris building are old, old ***** is expensive blah ......but still great to see by any means.

most of you saying this are prolly young, never been to europe or evne observed what its like. USA has some beautiful cities and weather, i stay in southern usa FL-GA-TX -Puerto rico.

Anyways maybe europe is for you, visit have fun and enjoy life, its short.

This is not meant to put down europe or anything i had great fun there while i was livig there made MANY freinds a few gf's so by any means it was great. This was just my opinion on the whole Economy/Money/Education/Standards of living

America sucks, when I get old enough, I'm moving to a less materialistic country. All anyone cares about here is money. I go to school all day and come home and do homework until I go to sleep extremely late. I don't have enough time to live a healthy lifestyle because of all the schoolwork and because I need more sleep than most people (about 11 hours). Because of school, I am always tired and depressed. The "American Dream" is a bunch of bull*****... they say you can have anything you want if you work hard, but in reality, you must have a lot of money to go to college and make anything of yourself (a high school diploma isn't worth ***** anymore). This country cares more about me making money than having a healthy life, and I find that wrong...

when is 3.11 downgrader coming out?

» did you even understand the translation???

The rough translation from the Japanese site also mentions PSN(playstation network) in the same paragraph, so it's referring to the PS1 emulated games you download, not UMD based games. The UMD has a specific set rotational speed that is maintained in the PSP's hardware.

» Pspzerz your a *****tard

School is approximately 7 hours, plus hw is at the most prior to college 2 hours. That leaves you 13 hours to yourself. If you can't balance that then you need help...

» 3.30 FW?

what a big jump w/ a not so big features added...

i wonder whats the next firmware gonna b? 4.10? lolz...

do you think SONY is having a hard tym putting features for the PSP? coz they have been puttin' up updates with less features?... i think Sony could not think anymore of a feature that would make PSP users update for it... unless they put the PlayStation Store accessible through the PSP....

PS: Does the 3.30 FW have a security patch update?

» what do you think man?

NO HOMEBREW SUPPORT means that there is no homebrew support. SIMPLE.

(If you still don't get it then it means you CAN'T DOWNGRADE, CANNOT, no way can you downgrade...unless you wait for....5 years.)

by DJ - 2007-03-30 02:46
» is there ever gonna be an exploit without gta?

I don' know. Once they do find an exploit then homebrew all the way! (they might already have one but they are not releasing it until they test it thoroughly and allows it to work on most firmwares. Just a guess.)

by DJ - 2007-03-30 02:51
» yeah what the dude above me said....

sony would resell you a used one for $90 with possibly the latest firmware. Just do the wal-mart trick (if you know what i mean)

» Man!

I only use psp for the webbrowser now. I gave up on all the other stuff it does. Never anything good is released anymore like it once was. Now I use my PS3 for that kind of stuff.

by um - 2007-03-31 02:42
» dumbass

I hope for your sake he never release it

I mean GIVE THE MAN TIME

only he knows when he will make a release.

Or become a C programmer and do it yourself.

» The non-sucker dl.er

I downloaded it not to install it lol, but to see what was inside the psar using the tool made by the c+d team.

I think others did the same too.

» not worth it

I have fw 2.71 se-c installed on my psp, but my friend had a 3.11

He decided to update it to 3.30, and the only changes he noticed were that you could put thumbnails on folders under video and RSS.

I asked him about the disk load speed option, and he siad it didnt come with the update
