PSP Firmware Version 2.80 Video Folder: Explained! Part 1 |

In the past few weeks, there's been plenty of buzz created by the release of PSP firmware version 2.80.
Quite a lot of it was "What can 2.80 do? It has a video folder? Cool! Wait. How come my videos don't work?"
People generally discovered (usually through trial and error) that MPEG-4 video files (both named and not named according to PSP naming format) work, and so do MPEG-4 AVC files created by PSP Media Manager and the 3GP Converter. Those made by PSPVideo9 don't seem to work at all. Thumbnails don't seem to work, either. What's going on? Where can we turn to for answers? How does the video folder work?
Well, Sony has a PDF file (released online) that you can read!
Yes!
Except it's in Japanese. But we'll discuss the video requirements anyway, especially now that PSP-Vault provided the English translation and most of the translation of the technical stuff you wouldn't normally want to read about. If you're not in the mood to read this though (or you don't see the need to do so), you can just stick to making files in PSP Media Manager and in the 3GP Converter. Those files should meet the video requirements just fine.
But if you look at the pretty pictures and look for Roman letters, you see a list that says that in the Memory Stick Video Format, the PSP running firmware version 2.80 will let you play:
- MPEG-4 Simple Profile (AAC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC)
- MPEG-4 Simple Profile (AAC) files
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC)
- and Baseline Profile (AAC)
- have .M4V or .MP4 as an extension
- be 768 kbps or less *
- be 320 by 240 pixels or smaller *
- have a framerate of 30 frames per second (fps) or less *
- have a Level 1.3 Baseline Profile or less *
- have a Level 2.1 Main Profile or less (however, the video must be CABAC only) *
- have an AAC 128kbps or less audio format and be 48kHz or less and in stereo *
- have .M4V or .MP4 as an extension
- be 768 kbps or less
- be 320 by 240 pixels or smaller
- have a framerate of 30 frames per second (fps) or less
- be in Simple Profile
- have an AAC 128kbps or less audio format and be 48kHz or less and in stereo
Once again, if you're a little new to this and don't understand video and audio codecs and all that arcane magic, you can stick to making videos using PSP Media Manager and 3GP Converter. You should have little or no problem at all. Maybe.

all updates suck! I have 1.5 and am playing loco roco AND Gangs of London and will be playing GTA Vice city Stories and SocomFTB2 ..... can yall N*ggas say that? negative 1.5 lives putos! chuch

This information was very helpful. I was wondering why tf almost nothing will work in the new folder. It's really frustrating. No, this update doesn't suck, it's a great update. I'm loving the new vidcast support. And hopefully I'll get my mp4/avc vids working in the new folder, without the wacky file name stuff, sometime soon...

They give us the real dirty news the good news on ISO loaders DEV Hooks and umd tools QJ=CRAP NEWS WITH NO LINKS HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH 2.8 SUCKS no one cares about a new crappy vid folder its called psp video 9 LOL that does it all for us 1.5s
my cousin is dumb enough lol, he came to my house yesterday I was going to put some nice 'brew on it, and I asked him what version he had. He told me "I don't really know, but I made sure to update before I came!" PS when is sony going to give us full resolution!!!
my little cousin was messing on my psp yesterday and he updated to 2.80 now i can't get it back to 1.5
320x240 limits, 786kbps limit, restrictions of encoders, no thumbnails, and its still the *****ty mp4 quality. 2.8 is even less glamorous than it was before, and it enver was glamorous at all.. :/ Guys, stick to PSPlayerMT and all the PMP players we got, they are way more effecient in every way.
i just want sony to stop bothering booster and devhook on 2.8... booster is really safe and sony are sticking up his A** thats not fair... dont upgrade to 2.8 just for this...
I think it's that file names with "M4Vxxxxx.MP4" will ONLY work in the original folder, but files with other names like "movie.mp4" will work in the video folder. Just put original movie files in the original folder!

i upgraded my usa psp to 2.80 and changed one of the files from the ma names to myvideo.mp4 and it didnt show at all. i renamed it back to the ma naming convention and it showed up fine again. guess people get off makign fake stories these days :( no worries though i woulda upgraded anyway as my japanese one is for homebrew, usa one i bought to play the latest games without messing up teh homebrew machine.
will be happy to see 2.80. How do I know? Because I would put myself in that category. Not everyone is a psp fanboy looking to pirate games, or run homebrew (which would be nice, but I can't). Some people just want to get a little more out of their system without doing a bunch of hacking (some of us have jobs, families, etc., which doesn't leave a lot of time left over for hacking on something as stupendously momumental as a PSP.) Now I can do audio AND video RSS feeds with NORMAL video files. If only they'd include text in RSS and I'd be a bit happier. This will save me a bit of transcoding work and I can use the same video files that a video iPod can. That opens up the market for the psp a bit more. Now they can compete with a video iPod. 4GB Duos are going for under $150 and according to Sony they are compatible with the PSP. With most ipod tv shows coming in at 250-300MB, I could have 10 episodes of a series and a gig left over for music. Most of that iPod disk space is wasted on people anyhow -- people are constantly changing what they listen to which means the bulk of that space is rarely used or listened to (it's like buying the LARGE SUV 'in case' you need the space). A drive in the PSP would be nice, but with 4GB or 8GB DUOs laying around, I can organize my files easier, share it faster, and get to what I want.
Can someone tell me why the hell a movie file I've been trying to convert to mp4 refuses to work? I've put it in the new folder, obeyed the restrictions/limitations, and yet the PSP still says "unsupported file type." I guess I'll try PSP video 9 again, but every time I use that program my audio/video end up out of sync. Is there a program out there that actually works? -d-
