Network Update - Image 1

Heads up, people. There's a new system update coming for the Sony PlayStation Portable. Don't hit that Network Update icon just yet, though (and if you're a homebrew user, why would you?). It's not out yet. PSN Operations director Eric Lempell says it should be out "soon", though.

So far, no changelog, but firmware 5.03 supposedly includes "a security patch for the PSP's system software." Could this be Sony's answer to the GripShift exploit? Very possible. Stay tuned for more updates.

*Update* Word on the PlayStation forums is that the update is now live. As Lempell said, all 5.03 has is the following:
  • New for 5.03: A security patch was added to address security vulnerabilities in the system software.

» wouldnt be supprised

if it was to fix the griptshift exploit

by FreePlay - 2009-01-19 14:09
» Of course.

That's all it will do.

by Drunk Vegan - 2009-01-19 14:10
» agreed

DO NOT update if you have a TA-088v3 motherboard on your PSP-2000 Slim or if you have a PSP-3000.

Gripshift Exploit works up to 5.02 OFW + CFW universally, there is no guarantee they did not correct for the exploit in 5.03.

» .

This is how it has been since the beginning.

People find ways to work around security and sony patches the weaknesses found and the peopl find more weaknesses and loop hole to work around the fixes.

It will never end!!!

Since it was taking so long, I was beginning to believe that Sony wasn't going to patch it as long as it remained a user-mode only exploit, to show their pro homebrew but anti ISO side.

by FreePlay - 2009-01-19 17:06
» Analysis

There are significant changes in:

/vsh/module/savedata_auto_d ialog.prx [related to auto-loaded savedata]

/vsh/module/savedata_utilit y.prx [related to savedata in general]

/kd/power.prx (for some reason, 0x1F31 went from 0xFD in 5.02 to 0xFC in 5.03)

/kd/lflash_fatfmt.prx (for some reason, 0xC98 went from 0x32 in 5.02 to 0x33 in 5.03)

Apart from the standard changes (index.dat, pspbtcnf.bin, loadexec.prx) literally every other change was just an update of the internal version number from 5.02 to 5.03

I can confidently say that this update does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but patch the GripShift exploit.

I just replied to your comment on the blog lol

by FreePlay - 2009-01-19 17:32
» Confirmed

They've specifically added a check for the American, European, Japanese, and Korean versions of the game. It will automatically detect the savedata as corrupt, and refuse to display it on the list of available saves.

» It will never end

I didn't get into the hombrew scene until the GTA exploit was released, but of course people who don't know about this exploit will probably update. I almost made that mistake. I hate these useless firmware updates that are only for security patches and offer nothing new in terms of added features.

Classic Sony game of cat and mouse. It's only a usermode exploit. Any harm or loss of revenue because of this?

by DarkXCloud - 2009-01-19 19:21
» .

I'm guessing that games for 5.02 and being played on lower versions will be corrupted if they update it to 5.02 or higher... nooo!

by DarkXCloud - 2009-01-19 20:27
» The tiff exploits were the same too

***ing annoying wasteful updates.

by isti - 2009-01-20 01:06
» lol

this is an update for Sony's business, not for us..

thanks Sony! you're so giving and kind..

I'm about to sell my PSP and ban Sony products from my life..

Sony doesn't care about customers and communities at all, just the profit, and to compete other manufaturers..

that's all..

I love the PSP, but the official support is a joke,

with PS Store on the lead..

PS3 is a joke by itself, it's high end, but useless..

no proper games, services, nothing..

just an expensive shiny black box, with awesome graphics output..

Sony Computer Entertainment is a dead end for me.. :(

by SchmilK - 2009-01-20 01:19
» nice :)

Good show mate :)

Sorny should have bundled a new feature in there with the exploit to encourage those OFW users to update so then they couldn't use the GS exploit...but them programming types don't seem to think that way over there. :)

by tanman37 - 2009-01-20 01:39
» ugh

it's only a user mode exploit, but remember the ones in the past? They all lead to downgraders and homebrew enablers.

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-01-20 05:54
» I know the possibilities

What could you possibly downgrade to and why? 1.50 is not only dead, but also unbootable on the 3000. There isn't the need to downgrade when there is CFW and how are you gonna install it with a usermode exploit when downgrading to 1.50 is impossible?

by GLO13AL_T3RROR - 2009-01-20 07:22
» wtf.

wtf instead of providing new features...sony is just *****ing around making updates like a madass.

by xXDark-AlgaXx - 2009-01-20 08:17
» What A Load

Of Crap. Like Ps3 Gets This Photo Gallery Feature etc. And The PSP Gets A Security update-_-, hahaha I am bout done with sony and its lame support for feats etc. for psp. What Ashame, I Spent about $500 on 3 slims. Im selling them on ebay now.*Packs Bags*and says"Microsoft, HERE I COME...".

by MikeyMike01 - 2009-01-20 13:19

If only Microsoft had a handheld... I'd be all over that ***** in a nanosecond.

But in the meantime we have to put up with Sony and their inability to do anything right.

» useless

another useless update from $ony.

by jimftr - 2009-01-21 04:53
» err??

why do you think sony do this eh?? because of piracy! if this exploit allows cfw, people will obvisouly pirate. stop saying sony are rubbish just because they want to stop piracy.

by locobrown - 2009-01-21 15:38
» Very debatable

Anyone who chooses to pirate, is the decision of the user, for better or worse and repercussions could arise for such conducts of that particular individual. We mod our PSPs and the purpose of that is mainly to use homebrew. Its a shame others choose to pirate, but CFW is not illegal. CFW exists, but its up to the individual as to how they choose to use it. This can be a very debatable topic because mixed opinions exists.

» iphone

its time to move on to the iphone and jailbreaking :)

by majorbb100 - 2009-01-22 13:40
» pirating

The reason everyone pirates is because it is so easy. Its a few clicks with the mouse to download, then just a drag and drop into the ISO folder.

by rein_317 - 2009-01-22 14:16
» when??

this update cant fix the 8gb or 16gb mem.......

can anyone tell me when they fix the 16gb mem on psp cuz i have this mem for 3month and i cant even use it

pls help!!!

by squintin - 2009-01-23 06:19
» Shut the ***** up!

I'm tired of all the idiots who hate on people who pirate. CFW may not be illegal but it is ill-advised by sony. If sony wanted you to use homebrew they would add it themselves but that wouldn't make them money. They add stupid ***** like patches to stop exploits and add a good feature to the firmware every 1/6 updates. Ever look through a list or collection of PSP games? They mostly suck *****! Sony is money hungry and the same way you use exploits to enable your free homebrew the few good games that come out for PSP should be free too. Next time you wanna call someone immoral for using ISOs you should mind your own business. The use of your PSP should only matter to you whether it be for Umds, homebrew or isos. Your criticism helps no one!!!! how would you feel if you had a personal attraction to brunettes (pirated isos) and some dumb loser said that even though they like blondes(homebre w), you should only like redheads(ofw), and that by liking brunettes best you were ruining the Girl(game) industry? get your nose off of everyone else's psp and your mouth off their nuts!

by squintin - 2009-01-23 06:21
» um...

I have an 8gb which runs perfectly albeit a long ass load time in versus mode FF:Dissidia. maybe you just need new brands of ms.

by rein_317 - 2009-01-23 10:50
» ?????

my 16gb mem it works when i put a few games but when i put more than 4gb it ddint work ??

i hope dark alex fix it!!

by UltimaArmorX - 2009-01-23 11:32
» Nope. Not with the way Sony perceives things.

To them it isn't about the updates.

It's about patching holes, and not fixing what isn't broken.

by cheses100 - 2009-01-25 10:49
» this sucks

If you think that sony should just give up in stopping hackers click this link http://www.youtube.com/user/stickfigureguy24

by UltimaArmorX - 2009-01-25 11:15
» I meant,

to them it's business. They merely HOPE you upgrade to the latest update. But whatever floats your boat. Until a game needs it, I just don't see the point in upgrading anymore (and I've seen a few of you guys out there post similar ideology).

I mean, what the PSP does on FW 3.54 is complete. It needs no improvement. What you want and what you get are two different things (so shut up with your "AVI support plz").

by UltimaArmorX - 2009-01-25 11:40
» Sony can't stop it.

It's already happened, and those hacked PSPs are likely to still be truckin along with those ISOs..

It'll stop the new-comers, though. But not if they buy a mod chip.

by Acteon - 2009-01-27 06:38
» Didn't care until I saw this...

"They've specifically added a check for the American, European, Japanese, and Korean versions of the game. It will automatically detect the savedata as corrupt, and refuse to display it on the list of available saves. "

What a bunch of complete asses! Given the uneven nature of releases in the UK (no Yggdra Union, no Jeanne D'Arc, probably no Mana Khemia) Sony can piss off if they think I'm going to update to this and lose the ability to play imported games - half my collection is imported, and without games like Gundam vs Gundam or Macross the platform is dead as far as I'm concerned.

Jesus, what a bunch of *****s! Stopping piracy is one thing, but fudging the consoles ability to play imports is f**king unforgivable!

by KylBlz - 2009-01-27 14:08
» omfg..

The reason we cant have CFW is because of *****s like you, without you around then we could have CFW. you know why? the reasons sony doesnt like CFW:

1)retarded ppl brick their PSP's and sony has to pay for it and give them a new console

2)retarded people [you] pirate games [illegal][selfi sh] and destroy the industry:

-no one buys games >

no one programs games >

no one buys the console because it has no games.

So, im sure you see now that your the cause of all this commotion.

by Vanaheimx - 2009-01-28 00:34
» But...

They were invented, which kind of defeats your point.

by squintin - 2009-01-28 03:05
» Wow!

You just proved you're dumb because commenting on my words is the opposite of what a smart person would have done (the point was for you to mind your own business). First off, we CAN have custom firmware, Its called a phat/slim PSP retard. I've owned a ps2, gamecube, gameboys, ps1, a ds and all the older consoles but the only one i've ever pirated for was the PSP. Rumors may just be rumors but unhackable 3000 with possible 4000 and PSP2 coming soon? thats just wrong. Umds break really easily and sony devalues each new PSP that is made by coming out with the new model 20 days later. Psp firmware upgrades suck, they can make two Psp upgrades since fat but no improvement on the horrible web browser. plus anyone who uses CFW and bricks their psp and need sony to fix it are retards!!!! The collection of *****ty games on the PSP astounds me. I've bought good games like GTA:LCS and FFT:WOTL but i've also been subjected to buying *****ty games like Prince of Persia and Blade Dancer. Maybe if more care was put into making games I would actually want to buy them but some games are just *****ty. After FF VIII: Crisis Core, I figured games could only go foward...but then I was surprised with the piece of ***** that is spider-man: web of shadows (3d open-world for most systems, 2d side-scroller for PSP) i'm just fed up with it and since i don't have to take it, I won't.

by zephiroth911 - 2009-01-29 13:37
» urgent

dark_alex

could you make a dwongrader for the 5.03 to a 4.01 because my cousin upgraded my psp to the 5.03 and now i cant play the games i have in the psp and it does not show up in the psp even doe i have it in the iso folder

by leo9891 - 2009-01-30 03:58
» LMAO!!!!!

that sucks to be you! you should've changed your recovery mode settings to use the M33 Update instead of the Sony Update! lol. that sux. and if you were on a CFW, i think you should've had a pandora battery and memstick by now. but anyways, that was your mistake for not taking those precautions.

by FreePlay - 2009-02-01 02:47
» ...

... What ARE you on about? It "specifically added a check for the American, European, Japanese, and Korean versions of ***the game***" meaning GripShift.

You seem to have a problem with the eengleesh.

by squintin - 2009-02-01 10:01
» Damn

Ha Ha! You're just gonna need a new PSP, period. How did you decide to update without knowing what you were getting into? Maybe you should put that web browser to use and you'd still be able to play those games!

by squintin - 2009-02-01 10:05
» also...

Never let anyone, especially someone without experience with the object, touch something expensive of yours. They're sure to break it! No more ISOs for you...
